My daughter (in high school) has been accused of "Having an AI in her head" because she is able to remember facts and use reason.
The state of the youths is strongly diverging intellectually into "haves" and "have-nots" in terms of brainpower.

u/blutosings 11h ago
Young people deal with so many distractions and most of their parents are teaching them zero discipline. Congratulations on raising one of the good ones. I hope you're also teaching her how to lead.
25
u/Mecha-Dave 11h ago
Yes, in fact!
Just started high school (we moved from private to public because private was too babying) and she's running 2 clubs as a freshman. Also, she reads voraciously and eschews the use of LLMs. I'm very happy with how she's turned out.
She's taken some college classes back in 7th grade, and we'll take some more next year - but we'll still graduate on the 4 year path so she can have a chance to be a kid for a while. Also, if she can succeed and lead in public school, she'll be well set up for next phases in life. I was a private school kid and there are social gaps when those kids hit the real world.

I think this generation will have to learn how to use LLM/AI in a harm reductive manner.
I use it to ask me questions in my work. If you understand when and where to use it, it can be a powerful tool.
But you can't just rely fully on it.
→ More replies (2)9
u/PartridgeInDisguise 9h ago
That’s actually a great way to use an LLM. Even an early model that spits out barely coherent sentences would be a challenge to your own knowledge base and ability to explain things or translate concepts.
4
u/wearing_moist_socks 9h ago
Due to circumstances in my personal and professional life I've had...a lot of time to use them.
I'm inherently lazy, but I hate submitting poor work, so I learned how to front load, test, adjust and work with LLMs. I've created a set of rules I follow, and it's served me very well.

Hey now, let's not put this all on the younger generation. The professor is using AI to grade the paper. It's a human problem
46
u/Mecha-Dave 11h ago
TBH the professor of an art history course, even with a PhD, could be Gen Z at this point.
But yes the professor using AI to grade is absolute BS and they should get a sanction for that - its academic misconduct.

u/a-bser 5h ago
Calling them an AI brain is the new term for this generation. Before that it was Wikipedia, and before that was Encarta, and before that was Encyclopedia.
Regardless of the name, it's a practice in being reductive by people who are unwilling to accept that someone might know more information about things than them and they excuse it by calling them a name instead of complimenting their memory. And that's especially concerning when it's teachers or people in a position that decides your future making that kind of determination

I used to get in trouble with my algebra homework because I could do the math in my head and wasn't writing it down. It was tough for me to figure out what "step" I should be putting down to show I didn't just plug it into a calculator. Eventually the teacher realized, especially after doing quizzes in class without calculators, that I was indeed able to do it all in my head.

It's a solid point because it should be bloody obvious. We are all in a widespread societal agreement that "AI is here to stay though", so we are apparently just going to go with it; dismantling our critical thinking because self debasement and self destruction of the human species is a good trade-off for efficiency.
5
u/CeruleanEidolon 8h ago
It's THE point. If you're just going for the degree, what's the fucking use of that? Sure, you need that for your career, but you won't be able to do fucking anything if you aren't doing the coursework to actually earn it.
And your prospective employers will clock this immediately when you can't answer basic questions about the field you're in. Why flush your money down the toilet just to get a rubber stamp? Without the skills, that stamp won't even get you in the front door, let alone a seat in the lobby waiting for a callback.
She has good reason to be pissed at this professor. If the professor can't grade all those assignments herself, that's what TAs are for. There should be plenty of grad students and even undergrads willing to put in the time for a stipend or the experience and a line on their resume. If the university is just going to grade shit with AI, that's fucking free. Students can do that at home.

u/CosmonautCatPhD 9h ago
Yeah, I'm not defending the shitty grading here, but it's also possible her professors is an adjunct or postdoc making $5k per class. Universities are full of these. The big issue is horrific mismanagement by the MBAs in college administrations.
Of course, is possible this is an older tenured professor, but let's be real... most of those have decades worth of notes and lectures to lean back on and know exactly how to minimize their work over the course of a semester while still assigning HW and giving exams. This doesn't sound like one of those situations.

Can't. Retribution for complaining. So much of colleges today are professors protecting each other, and if you dare speak up, retribution is coming. She's really brave to post this online before graduating, TBH.
Colleges have almost no tolerance of criticism of faculty for not doing their jobs.
17
u/Vegan-Daddio 8h ago
I had the opposite happen. Got a C in a chemistry lab in community college for one of my days being counted as absent because I was more than 15 minutes late. My assignments were all graded as A's. I emailed the head of the department to explain that I had a flat tire and provided proof, and then went on to explain that our professor was almost always 20-45 minutes late to class every single week (it was a 6 hour one day a week class with a 2 hour lab the same day). Only after I sent the email to the department head did I realize he had the same very specific last name as my professor. I thought I was gonna fail because I just shit talked his wife.
Never got a reply to my email, but I did magically get an A for that lab on the official report card
7
u/Corporate_Bricktator 8h ago
Well you were very lucky then, as they hoped that fixing your grade would effectively silence your dissent over the wife's tardiness.

I had one awful teacher who shared the same last name as a faculty head, who I later took classes from, too.
When I asked him about it, I found out they're exes, and every semester he basically has to regrade all of her course work because she's constantly getting "needs review" on assignment grading because of student complaints about her not following her own rubric. She was a bitter hag.

I had a student teacher try to play that game when I made a complaint against her; online courses at my uni had to have NO SPECIFIC TIME OF DAY REQUIREMENT. She was trying to livestream lectures at a time not included in the course description (which only says "online"; for in person classes, that box says for example "Tue & Thu 3-4pm"). They must allow at least 48 hours from assignment open to assignment closure. She was forced to open the time frame to have lectures pre-recorded WITH TRANSCRIPT (because I am partially deaf, I did not sign up for an online course to listen to her mumble into her shitty temu mic, even hearing students couldn't understand her due to mic quality). She was trying to have quizes/tests the same way, I complained again, she was forced to open them properly. Suddenly I was failing every written exam and anything not multiple choice with minimal explanation, despite it being the same, similar, or better quality than students who got 80% grades. Dean refused to help after I emailed him with this last one because I was "complaining too much". I got on his schedule for an in person meeting.
I walked into the dean's office and said, basically, "look at my fucking transcript. I am not only a good student, I am a great student, and I am a long term student. She is trying to fuck with me because I am hard of hearing and because I complained against her for going against school policy. She is discriminating against me and retaliating. Either you help me or I swear to the gods, I'm taking her, you, and the school, and with screenshots of all the proof, to the media and to court." I brought him a copy of the assignment rubric and my assignment with the low grade on it and insisted he read through it while I sit there and watch him do it.
He did, mostly because he wasn't expecting me to come out cussin and fighting when he saw I was using a rollator and could barely stand physically. After reading my assignment he marked every assignment in that class as needing external review for every student who got below a 80% (he told me as such), and the teacher not only failed her course, but she was forced to drop out of the teaching program and banned from re-joining it. I only know that last part because she sent me an email cussing me out about it after she got the news. Which I forwarded to the dean, who was very apologetic.

Retribution? I work at an R1 university and it’s likely the teacher would only get a slap on the wrist, but for there to be some kind of retaliation against the student is insane.

I am going through shit with South New Hampshire University right now. I enrolled in June for their online program and everything was great… until classes started in August. All of my classes have you use LinkedIn Learning for your instruction.
EVERY. SINGLE. CLASS.
Like - the “professors” have no face time with students, no meetings, not a one demo from the people “teaching” the class. Legitimately relying on fucking LINKED IN to teach a class and then just assigning and grading papers (which I also think is AI based - I got docked points for missing SPACES in between a few sentences I wrote)!!!
What sucks is that I actually teach at the college level myself, and I’m actually teaching some of the classes that I am required to take! (Long story short- basically some of my former classes were taken so long ago that the credits don’t transfer anymore).
Next semester, I am scheduled to take a history of photography class, which is the exact same class I’m teaching at my college. Using the exact same book, also. If they send me to LinkedIn learning, my head is going to fucking explode.

Wah wah wah.... but I do agree with the sentiment. Having been an educator for 3 decades I can confirm this is true and I am always floored by my colleagues who insist on regular weekly assignments then bitch about grading. I keep the assignments reasonable so I can keep up, but I am the minority. I think alot of educators feel if they don't then students will not digest and understand the material or work hard. At the post secondary level I really don't give a shit if my students work hard or not. It's their money. Not mine. Having said that I treat all my students equally. If you don't hand in assignments I don't treat you any different than the person who hands all in and gets A's. BTW, one trend I have noticed is parental involvement in post secondary which I frankly find embarrassing for the students. You're all grown ass adults. Lol. But I get it. So rant away girl because trust me, we rant away about students like you too. Lol
26
u/Icy_Fish_2154 11h ago
Fewer, harder questions will help you gauge where students are.
The hardest question I have ever seen on a test was super short. "What is the force of the photons released by the sun on the Earth?". It then had a long long lost of assumptions, which made the question answerable and come to a single numerical answer (which nobody got, because on a test, the number of steps to go through was so much, the grade was based on laying out a clear path to the answer, not the answer itself).
I hated that question, and respected it.
But it showed where the class was on the physics parts of the question (blackbody radiation, photon momentum, momentum to force, etc.) and the geometry (what portion of a point source 150 Gm away hits a sphere of diameter 10 Mm).

It’s especially insane because college professors are using the “I don’t have time” excuse as a reason to push AI generated lecture materials and even AI exams. I am in a field currently where I talk with a lot of professors about their course plans, and it’s insane how ubiquitous the idea to use AI in the college class teaching process is.
Like holy shit, it’s literally part of your job as a college professor to teach. Outsourcing it to LLMs while whining that it takes hours and hours to grade assignments (nevermind they all use TA graders) is wild work, especially for institutions that charge six figures to attend for a four year degree.
These folks have tenure btw. Fucking wild

I think you're missing the point of education. Professors don't assign readings and coursework for their own entertainment. The reading is for YOUR education, not just to complete an assignment. You're supposed to engage with the material, develop your understanding and learn to think critically.
The irony is that students complain about being given work to learn from, then complain when lecturers don't put enough effort into teaching them. You can't expect a quality education while resenting the very work that is supposed to educate you.
11
u/animorphsrewriter 11h ago
Not how it works. We ask you to learn something, we need to measure your learning. You should want us to measure your learning to make sure you actually learned aka understood the concept and can apply to the next thing you need to learn.
But the employer is like that fetch dog meme, "no take, only throw." The school is like, "No plan, only teach." For some teachers they're not given enough time to do all the stuff they need to do outside of class. And some, just like some students, aren't great with time management. I manage to keep most of my work within actual work hours, but not always. Even today, a Saturday, I need to create rubrics and update last year's prompts for my next unit. Probably about two hours of work, but I'm not too bothered about it.
I get paid well, have chill admin, good students, and get summers off + 5 weeks of paid vacations throughout the year (Thanksgiving, etc). I'm very lucky to have my job.

Right…. We should just not assign any work, no academic achievement needed. Just send out a bunch of illiterate automatons into the world. The complaint about having too much work is not because of assignments it’s because classes that used to be maxed at 22 students are now upwards of 40 students. And teachers are expected to be everything from coaches to psychiatrists and pseudo parents. Trust. If all I had to do was correct assessments and teach content, this would be the easiest job ever.

My father's siblings are a great example of this. They were all straight A students besides the youngest son, who is extremely charismatic. The oldest went to college for 12 years then ended up doing commercial property management. The daughter ended up working in a car insurance company. The second oldest brother ended up being an engineer and getting fired for being socially inept and going behind his bosses back up the chain. The youngest ended up being the CEO of a company after marrying into the family. He could talk his way through anything, even getting his son back into college after beating someone up and defenestrating them. Connections and grit can get you much further than competency.

Completely missing the point mate, but sure I'll indulge you. A lot of art teachers and curators focus on european art. Da Vinci, Matisse, Monet, Renoir, Picasso. You get it. She's mentioning it because its nice to see art from different cultures, people, etc. We saw a really lovely exhibit recently in Gainesville, from a South American woman that focused on feminine roles, modern technology and disposable culture. It was fascinating, so, to digress, she's not anti-white male art. She's just saying that thats a great place to see art from other people and perspectives. Hope this helps.

It's a point that nearly everyone who will accept it understands by now. The only thing more tiresome than seeing all these works of art by white men (including their historical dominance in virtually any other medium) is hearing the endless discourse about it.
Because it is everywhere right now. If we're being honest with ourselves, society just seems to absolutely despise "white men" as a general concept at this point, and it's only when you point it out that even reasonably intelligent people tend to just talk around it, as if you're being weird or somehow inaccurate.
Yet when people say "you wouldn't make the same statement about X race/culture", while this itself comes off as lazy and ahistorical, I am beginning to see what they are grasping at, what they are actually trying to say. They aren't saying that white male historical dominance and hegemony isn't a reality; they are saying that they are clearly sensing an attitude of contempt towards an enormous group of people in a way any thoughtful critic should find absurd, and that its wrongness is not in the context of who has historically held power, but this kind of discourse is just demeaning, misguided, exhausting, and wrong. It's just messed up to have this level of vitriol flowing towards any group, and it has never felt normal.
I don't know, all of this is probably not directly relevant to the particulars of your point.
But we are absolutely entering a world of cultural diversity in the 21st century, where barriers of entry are falling everywhere, but the world still seems blind with rage that it can't repossess history and remove white men from it as much as possible. It doesn't even want to live with them now, considering most are viewed casually as sex predators or murderers or fascists.
And I'm tired of the gaslighting that this isn't happening, or its insignificant, or its a small violin issue. When even on the level of basic, rational empathic thought about global culture, going off on white guys all the time must be a problem to some degree just in how narrowing it is in thought, how obviously limited in scope it must be to look at the predominance of work by The Dead White Men as some kind of global embarrassment, a mistake that needs to be refreshed with the permanent cultural revolution of diversity and centuries worth of disdain for colonial misdeeds.
It's repeated so much that the point can't even be satisfying to say anymore. It must immediately have sounded tired in the woman's mouth here, even before she said it, but it is just something you say now, so you do. Even white men say it. Everybody does. It's just a mantra to be delivered constantly that everything sucks because white guys took over everything and made them suck.

To expand on what you are saying within the context of contemporary art, I just want to say it's a very dishonest argument to say that white men are dominating the art world. I work at 3 major contemporary art institutions, and I can't remember the last time any of them have shown a white man. I think there was a white man included in a group show about 4 years ago, but they made it very clear that he was queer as an exception to the whiteness. Of course classical museums are full of paintings from dead people. If these are the places you are getting your art from, you probably don't care much about culture anyway. The living artists who are getting shows at major contemporary museums are certainly not white men, and this is extremely intentional.

I am so sooooooooooooooooo so so thankful I got through college before AI became a thing. Holy shit. I didn’t even have treatment for my ADHD in college and I had to use my brain so hard I had to take it so slow but at least I know it was a genuine honest academic experience and I’m proud of it 😭I would crash out in her shoes too

What an amazing life to live where your major life crisis was getting a 97 in an art elective class in college.

I am in a doctoral program. One professor uses AI for EVERYTHING. her images, slides, lectures, and yes, responses. In her syllabus it says, highlighted in yellow, “DO NOT USE AI!” and a list of things to not use AI for, the damages of AI on the world, the environment, etc.
She leads the department.

Right the fuck on. Former Engineering Instructor here. We allowed our students to use whatever they want to use to take quizzes, homework’s and do little projects, but provide a warning that improper use of AI is not permitted. At the end of the semester, we gave a practical project examination where we give them a problem, assign a group and turn them loose to problem solve, design-up a solution, create a specific DV plan and then present it to the department as an after the sale presentation. They get a week. It’s obvious who cheats. The grades reflect that cheating.

Love the whole "why do I pay you for?" bit. College has become a transaction: students expect to get what they're paying for and profs will only do what they're get paid for, while the college pockets the difference lol

Whatever camp she is in, I'm 100% behind her. Fuck yeah! Kick out anyone in school who uses AI to do their work, including faculty.

I went in ready to hate her and roll my eyes. I apologize profusely and am ready to crown her queen. I’m planning on auditing to be her professor next semester.

Scary how it's getting to this point. I just had an argument with somebody about a teacher using AI, and was downvoted because it's fine for them to do it apparently. No double standards there at all?

I'm so glad AI didn't come out earlier, I was a path if least resistance kid and I definitely wouldn't have made it to being an Electrical Engineer if this was an option for me. (Pun not intended)

Getting my masters in a major uni in Australia. It’s crazy how so many of profs will use ai in their lecture slides either to generate images like info graphics or to present stats that may or may not be wrong. More and more of them are actively encouraging us to use the stuff, and my uni jus made a deal with ChatGPT that sounds like some programs are gonna require students to use it going forward. They say it’s to make use have the skills necessary to work in an AI world, but it seems to me it’s more about permanently handicapping us to be reliant on the shit going forward. Shit is cooked.

If professors can use AI to grade it then the students can use it to create it. Like goes with like, it's basic chemistry.
