miscellaneous Tropes that became problematic

The Persistent Suitor: A guy who is after the girl and just wont take no for an answer. Nowadays we just call stalking and harassment, but it used to be romantic. Example: The Notebook (2004), Noah asks Allie out while she's on a date with another man. She refuses, but he threatens to let go and fall unless she agrees to go out with him.

Comedic Woman On Man Violence: Mostly seen in anime, recently it has decreased a lot but years back every show had a woman hitting a guy and showed it as funny. Example: Toradora!, where the quintessential tsundere, Taiga, beats up the MC regularly.

Kid Bags Adult Baddie: I remember a few of these, sometimes it was to show how cool and awesome a kid was because an adult woman fell for him, now it's just seen as problematic shit. Example: Blank Check, the woman likes the kid and kisses him telling him to look for her in 10 years.

the makeover trope where a girl with curly hair and glasses straightens her hair and takes off the glasses and suddenly becomes beautiful. the curly hair part is genuinely so disgusting because you can only imagine the damage it did to girls with similar hair textures.

My wife is one of them. Has naturally curly/wavy hair, but straightens it daily because of things like this.

Aww ): let her know she is beautiful! Curls are beautiful. They're a pain in the ass sometimes but I like my hair a lot better now.

God this. As a guy with curly hair, i tried to grow it out but it's such a pain in the ass to maintain I always default back to a buzzcut. My mom straightens her hair cus she's tired of maintaining a full lions mane 24/7 lol

Everyone's hair is different! Curls are especially frustrating and you have to try a lot of things because one thing doesn't work for everyone. Granted I still don't have a crazy complicated curly girl routine and products figured out yet but I try

Happens to everyone. Men prefer straight hair on girls (majority), and women prefer curly hair on guys (majority). Just makes everyone who isn't in the majoritys wishes wants to change, forgetting that like 40% of the opposite sex like the other thing

Man that sucks. I get compliments on my curls all the time.

The strange thing is that she does too (probably because it's a change when she leaves it natural), but she says she was made fun of as a kid about it, so now thinks it looks bad.

Noooo curly hair is beautiful! What a shame

People reacting to this like she can’t walk or something lol

Right? Did not expect a simple comment about My wife disliking her hair to get that much reaction.

Thankfully it feels that this has changed at least where Im from. My halfsister is 16 younger than me and has the thickest, curliest hair I have ever seen but people compliment on it all the time and I have only seen her with straitgthened hair twice(basically doing it to see how it looks).

My girlfriend is convinced she looks like Murderface when her hair frizzes. (She does not)

My (now ex-) gf had the same problem. I even told her that I like curly hair (which I do) but she still refused to leave it curly.

Or maybe she just doesn't like her naturally curvy hair. I know it's hard concept for some men to realize that women aren't dumb and actually know what they want and what they like.

Just because it was a popular cliche back in a day, doesn't mean that we got traumatized into straightening our hair.

Or…. hear me out….. maybe she told her husband that she straightens her hair in part because of this type of thing.

"Because of things like this" is another word for "idk why, I am just making shit up".

God forbid people have different life experiences to you.

-7

u/chuueeriies Sep 06 '26

God forbid they don't.

u/BetterFinding1954 Sep 06 '26

Why are you insisting on making yourself look ridiculous?

-7

u/chuueeriies Sep 06 '26

Why are you insisting in voicing your opinions. Nobody cares about you.

10

u/strawberry-soy-milk Sep 06 '26

wait, but you think people give a shit about you and yours? lmfao

u/chuueeriies Sep 06 '26

apparently they do

My sister basically got bullied into straightening her hair and she's still a teenager. It's definitely not just a "back in the day" cliche and my heart breaks for my sister because she genuinely thinks that she can't be pretty with her natural hair.

Edit* she wasn't just bullied by her peers (the worst came from other girls) but by her teachers too

What kind of evil piece of shit town did she live in. I've never heard of such hate for curly hair. It's comically evil.

12

u/frustratedcuriosity Sep 06 '26

I'm more curious about the rock you live under...

-2

u/chuueeriies Sep 06 '26

Under a rock where people don't act like comically evil cartoon villains because your hair grow differently.

Y'all are genuinely fucked in the head, wherever you are from.

10

u/coffee-bat Sep 06 '26

wow way to victim blame. you're extremely priveledged to not have witnessed this severe bullying (or, honestly judging by your comments, you probably did and assumed the victim was at fault or overreacting...).

3

u/JackLaytonsMoustache Sep 06 '26

"You got bullied for having curly hair? Youre fucked in the head"

Youre just full of bad takes, arent ya?

0

u/chuueeriies Sep 06 '26

Is it some sort of debate strategy where you purposely misunderstand what someone is saying to paint them in a bad light?

Or are you actually dense?

2

u/JackLaytonsMoustache Sep 06 '26

Youre being told by multiple people that something happens and youre denying it because your personal experience was different.

I dont think im the dense one.

Well start thinking. You should move around the jello in your head at least sometimes.
