Characters [Funny trope] A child dies, audiences cheer

  1. Game of Thrones: Jeoffrey Baratheon, that little sadistic shit, gets poisoned and dies a horrible death in his mother's arms
  2. Final Destination Bloodlines: The penny kid causes the entire movie's events, and selfishly almost survives the prologue before being crushed by a falling piano
  3. (Meta example) Sonic 3: Maria gets killed accidentally during a raid by GUN. While people didn't cheer for her death per se, they were hyped to see Shadow's tragic backstory accurately portrayed in the movie.

The mention of Maria's death reminded me of this really fun video by wallaceprower where they go through every version of Maria Robotnik's death and put them on a tier list. I know that the live action version was because people were glad to see they didn't soften it for general audiences, but lmao this girl has died so many times across so many different mediums.

179

u/ImpracticalApple 12d ago

At the Sonic live music shows they usually show footage of cutscenes from the game. It's a bit of a running joke in the fanbase to audibly cheer when Maria gets killed in the Shadow the Hedgehog opening scene at these shows. Which must be very confusing for any random parents who took their kids to the show and just have a whole room of adults cheering a child getting shot.

Maria getting killed by GUN is basically the Sonic fandom's version of Martha Wayne's perls hitting the pavement. It's been done so many times that it's just become a meta joke outside of its tragic story and the effect it has on the characters. I was excited to see the live action movies deal with the subject, but now I pretty much could go the rest of my life without seeing her die again. LOL

Kenny McCormick - South Park

Not because the fans hate him—quite the opposite, actually. But because he dies far less often than he did in the early seasons, modern Kenny deaths are seen as a special occasion.

932

u/AmArschdieRaeuber 12d ago

Nelson from South Park. Probably not funny to everybody, but it can catch you really off guard how this potentially heart warming story goes completely wrong.

258

u/IrlResponsibility811 12d ago

I think they wanted to do something unexpected at the end and this was the best way to keep the sports movie plot.

149

u/jbwarner86 12d ago

I read somewhere that Trey and Matt were just really burned out by the end of that season and weren't in the mood to do one more episode, so they were like "Fuck it, let's write the most unfair thing ever just to piss people off" 😆

As someone who watched the movie genre the episode was parodying, it was the cherry on top after the kids get beaten by grown up.

he dies far less often than he did in the early seasons

Originally they died every episode. I remember watching and waiting in anticipation for the gag because you knew it was coming. It's a lost art.

My favorite was the one in the middle of a chase scene, it cuts to just Kenny, the music stops and he kicks a Tetherball that then strangles him.

144

u/Suspicious_Bear42 12d ago

I don't recall when the episode was, other than a LOOOONG time ago (and I don't know how often they've reused the gag). Episode is basically over, possibly even post-credit. It cuts to Kenny, glancing around nervously for a moment before cheering. Then, out of nowhere, hit by a truck or something.

I loved the random Kenny deaths when I was younger.

28

u/MyBurnerAccount1977 12d ago

That was "Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo". Kenny is directed to unplug Christmas lights while standing in a puddle of water (nothing happens) and is also directed to retrieve climb a rickety ladder to retreive a decoration that is above a pool of hungry sharks (also nothing happens).

MJ had a husband and family and fans HATED spiderman being cucked. Thus Paul’s children just got erased from existence as step one in operation Fuck Paul

440

u/AznOmega 12d ago

And here is more good news for some. In a later comic, a villain named Torment killed Paul.

Even Spider-Man couldn't really feel bad or give his sympathies to his death.

Never real in the first place, MJ and Paul found them in the universe they were trapped in and tried to raise them but the villain just made them with magic. The fact that this is the second time in marvel that a pair of magic kids were revealed not to be real is funny.

I don't think it would be much of an exaggeration to say that Paul is up there with the Green Goblin for making Spider-Man's life miserable. Paul did more damage to his reputation and personal relationships than Doc Ock.

As a reminder, Doc Ock stole Peter Parker's body and became Spider-Man for awhile. During that time he: executed a super-villain with a gun, and treated being a Hero similarly to when he was a Villain, with Henchmen and overzealous policing.

People hate Paul for a lot of reasons.

For context, Peter and MJ were together in a desolate alternate dimension where time moved faster and they were being hunter by a super-villain. Paul was the only other person around and had a device that could return them home, but MJ pushed Peter through.

Also, the Super-villain was Paul's Father. Who Paul 'accidentally' helped genocide the world. But he faces almost no blame or scrutiny for that.

Because Peter was so desperate to save MJ, he burned a ton of his friendships because in order to save her, he had to steal from the Fantastic Four and got into fights with them when they wouldn't help him fast enough. This has him allying with Normal Osborne, the Green Goblin, one of his most hated foes.

By the time he did get back to save her, she'd adopted kids with Paul and started a relationship with him after they were freed. The kids were also not real, made by magic. They only existed to create artificial drama. They were so inconsequential as actual characters that the comic sometimes got their names wrong.

Paul's villain Father also continued to hunt for MJ to kill her, which resulted in the temporary death of Kamala Khan, Miss Marvel, a character who has almost nothing to do with Spider-Man, killed off in his comic for shock value, surrounded by a bunch of strangers and at the hands of a Z-tier villain.

Paul also would later create a super-powered device for MJ that gave her powers depending on a slot machine roll, which for some reason also included a roll that would kill her. People hated this. Which eventually happened, resulting in her becoming Venom. People also hated this.

He is a systematic avatar for all the worst that Spider-Man comics have to offer and the starting point for a string of decisions that people dislike.

"Usually" being the operative word. I even italicized it. I am sure there are examples where Bugs IS the asshole by sheer virtue of the number of cartoons featuring him, but Bugs is typically seen being an asshole to even bigger assholes, (like Fudd, who wants to kill him, Taz, who wants to eat him, and Daffy, who is often out to one-up him with an unhealthy amount of fervor) making him comparatively not the biggest asshole in the majority of his appearances. Being kind of a dick to your opps doesn't make you a bad guy in my book.

Jake, Law and Order SVU

He killed a little kid. Initially, he said he was being abused, and the psychological trauma led to him doing that. The victim's father felt terrible for him and requested leniency.

Then, it was revealed Jake lied. He had no traumatic past and had no remorse for what he did. But double jeopardy and all that. It's too late. So, the victim's father shoots him dead. No one was sad to see him go.

Not to mention he burned himself with cigarettes just to lie about the abuse. I do not blame the victim's father.

46

u/username_tooken 12d ago

You got it a little backwards. Jake was being tried as a juvenile, and the bereaved father kills him before he is sentenced after learning he lied. The father is acquitted on basis of temporary insanity, but later admits he was fully in control when he shot Jake, and did so because he was convinced that psychopaths can’t be cured and that Jake would kill again when released as an adult. It is the father character who benefits from double jeopardy.

Mostly unrelated: Sonic 3 was the best theater experience I've ever had, the only people in there were me and my sibling, so we got to be as loud as we wanted we did in fact cheer for the child dying and when the Death Egg laser turned on we just started chanting MOON, MOON, MOON, MOON. (the amusement was probably exaggerated by the fact that it was like 10:00pm)

me, two friends, and the sparse 2-3 other groups watching the pre graphics update version of cats. I remember one scene where there's like a thing under a metal pipe, just yelled "what the fuck is that". looked like a demon

Correction, Penny Kid is only crushed by a falling piano in Iris’ premonition. Because she prevented all of that from happening, he survived that night like everyone else. According to his wiki, he grew up to be a pickpocket and was crushed to death by a piano-moving truck in his adulthood.

Wait, so in the third Sonic movie it wasn't because she deserved it or because it was morbidly funny...but because it was lore accurate? That's still morbidly funny

35

u/idiocy97 12d ago

At least for me, I think it was more about the speculation: were they really going to have a soldier shoot a kid in a main stream Hollywood movie especially considering the time it came out? There was a perceived tension between how important it was to shadow's character and how off putting it might be. In the end, they didn't have the soldier shoot Maria directly, but the actions of the soldiers lead to her death inadvertently as their shots hit the vaguely defined unstable and dangerous of tampered with machinery.

I'm no expert on what exactly happened with Maria's death in the games, but I am fairly certain they sanded down the roughest edges. I believe the shot was directly ordered by a general who didn't care in the games. In the movie, the commanding officer was trying to stop it and it was more of a misunderstanding between superior and underling.

Only in the 1956 movie, not the original novel. If anyone's asking, it's "Bad Seed".

73

u/CapStar300 12d ago

They didn't really have a choice in the movie since this was done under the Hays Code, where murderers were not allowed to survive. Hence the rather hilarious scene where she gets struck by lightning.

43

u/UbiqAP 12d ago

She was struck by lightning for a really convoluted reason too when they could have easily just had Rhoda die from being on the roof during the storm setting up a trap for the lady whose lovebirds she wanted. Whether she got struck by lightning or even just slipping and falling off the roof or ladder.

Amusingly, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic qualifies. In season eight of MLP:FiM, a new character named Cozy Glow is introduced. Nothing seems off about her initially except that she's positively adowable in a show that's already about candy-colored ponies. Tiny hints are dropped until the end of the season, when it's revealed that all of her machinations have been in an effort to usurp power over the school.

So is she a shapeshifter? Mind-controlled by some supernatural power? Has some tragic backstory? Nope, she's just a rotten filly. She's locked away at the end of the season in a prison reserved for the series' worst villains.

Season nine has those villains break out and join forces to attempt to take over Equestria. The season ends with the three turned into stone (Cozy Glow is top-left). It's the final season, so that's it. No redemption arc, no resurrection, no reincarnation, Cozy Glow is just a statue forever, infanticide in all but name in a children's show about the power of friendship. Yeah.

Note: the prison mentioned is not a normal prison. It’s called Tartarus, it’s comprised of a bunch of bleak stony peaks, and it’s guarded by a three-headed dog. Very obvious what they’re invoking.

Jason Todd, people called in to kill this motherfucker, back when phone calls cost money to make. And now anytime he dies you know we’re about to get some red hood action

And Joker got away with this by becoming the ambassador to Iran. What a wild tonal whiplash of a story.

From what i’ve heard the situation was weird because he WAS a popular robin, it’s just that a bunch of people who preferred Dick Grayson as Robin wanted Jason gone… apparently they didn’t expect DC to ACTUALLY kill Jason for decades… they thought it was just for a specific story that wasn’t mainline…

Jake O'Hara - L&O SVU S6E06 "Conscience". — A 13-year-old, Jake abducted and killed 5-year-old Henry Morton and tried to frame a registered sex offender for his crime. When he is found responsible for Henry's death, he initially claims that it was an incident caused by a panic attack, and that he was abused and hurt at a summer camp.

Investigations instead show that Jake wounded himself at the camp, as well as wounding other kids, and was himself an abuser. He is diagnosed with severe sociopathy and incapacity of feeling remorse, and the detectives conclude that he killed Henry simply because he found it funny.

When the last detail is brought up in court, Brett Morton, Henry's father, realises that Jake will be out of jail at 18 with his record cleared, and when out of the courtroom Jake gives him a mocking apology for killing Henry, Brett steals a gun from a police officer and shoots Jake in the chest.

William Bullock, a young character in Deadwood, was trampled by an escaped horse. The writers decided to unexpectedly kill off the character because the child actor's mother kept on bugging the writers the give him more screentime and importance...

Elfen Lied.

Let's just say the bullies killed Lucy's puppy and they found out because another kid (most likely) pretended to care for her, but later revealed Lucy was happy over a puppy.

Needless to say, the bullies were brutally murdered. Not many people who watched this felt bad for the bullies considering they killed a puppy.
