Characters [Sad trope] The villains are just victims of the true villains that are forced to serve them.

Jerso and Zampano along with Heinkal and Darius from
Fullmetal Alchemist: originally they are allied with Kimbley who were later revealed to be Perfected Human Chimera’s meant to serve as soldiers for Father and the Promise Day conspiracy to silence Scar and keep the Elric Brothers from meddling in their plans. However it’s soon revealed that they are all in fact victims like Greed’s original chimera gang as they were soldiers who were deemed killed or MIA and later experimented into chimera’s to serve them. Thus having little choice in the matter until meeting the Elrics and joining their side, especially as Jerso and Zampano seek to restore their human bodies and restore their humanity.

The Warrior trio from Attack On Titan: Initially deemed as traitors against humanity who has brought about the fall of Wall Maria and caused so many people to perish by the Titans. However slowly but surely we see that the "Armored Titan" and "Colossal Titan" are not the monsters out to eradicate them out of malice. In reality when learning humanity is not extinct outside the walls, and the nation of Marley were the warriors originated from, could see they were all child soldiers who were groomed to serve as living weapons to inherit the Titan powers and maintain the nation’s status. Even though they are viewed as less than human due to their Eldian heritage by the Marlyean’s they still become Warrior’s to help their families. Later on those like Gabi only drill in how they are just children who were fed propaganda and only after seeing how the "devils of paradise" are just people like them. With Reiner in particular feeling immense guilt for his actions and having trauma for the victims he had made in Paradise, with the rest of the Survey Corps as they’re fighting the Yeagerist’s realize what it was like for Annie, Bertholdt and Reiner back then as they’re fighting their own countrymen. And later they put aside their differences and past actions in order to stop Eren from wiping out mankind.

Gunko Manmayer/Shuri from One Piece: When Gunko first appeared with Shamrock she was initially seen as just another vile and cruel God Knight like the other Celestial Dragons and it seemed that was the case…for a short while. The moment she met Brook however, things got very weird as Brook seemed to have recognized her. And after striking down Gaban, do we see her momentarily become a whole different person as she clearly knew Brook as a kid before Imu possessed her. Then afterwards with Brook finally explains his history with a person he had hoped to never see again. That Gunko is actually Shuri, the princess of a kingdom he served as its Knight Captain 70 years ago, with Shuri basically being his niece as he was a family friend of the royal family. However despite knowing her as a great person, on the night the World Government came to destroy Esperia as it could no longer be a member nation due to a fog destroying the backbone of their economy, Brook came to see a demonic Shuri killing her father as Imu/Mars and a God Knight stood by. It appeared Shuri had essentially betrayed her kingdom and family to become a Celestial Dragon as he learned she was the child of a Celestial Dragon who visited their kingdom years ago and nearly killed him before leaving with Imu.

However after seeing Imu Domi Reversi the giants into demons, he begins to realize that Shuri had suffered the same fate and was not acting of her own volition. And while we don’t know the whole story yet, it is very clear that Shuri was essentially an enslaved weapon of Imu. Yet Shuri is denying this to Brook once she woke up as the guilt of what she has done as Gunko and wanting to keep Brook safe as she may believe it’s too late for her, runs off declaring she doesn’t know him. But her tears and crying prove otherwise. But And hopefully there can be a happy ending to that particular story.

The Hollow Beasts of the Locust’s: Believe it or not, despite their horrific and monstrous forms, many of the war beasts the Locust horde utilizes are not natural to the Hollow. Quite frankly many of these creatures are the product of genetic engineering done by their lead scientist Ukkon that turned them into weaponized living weapons, one example being the Brumak which was once a Kadar Cave Ape resembling a lizard gorilla that was native to the Hollow. Only for the Locust’s to make them livestock and them mutated them into hulking lizard tanks that had chains, metal plating and weapons embedded and drilling into their hides and skin as they were abused horribly to submit to their masters bidding. With other Hollow beasts used as enslaved disposable weapons to use against the humans such as the bile frog used in E-day. Needless to say, while this is never shown, you can’t help but view many of these creatures as the hidden second victims of the Locust’s besides the Seran’s, as they are an example of their barbarism and depravity.

Broly from Dragon Ball Super: After being banished by King Vegeta due to his ego and pride not allowing a Saiyan stronger than his own son to exist, sent him to an utterly hostile and wretched planet to see him hopefully perish. His father Paragus, outraged by his son being exiled and sent to death out of King Vegeta’s pettiness had gone rogue to the planet his son was banished to and sought to train him in order to gain their(his) vengeance. However it was apparent that Paragus had viewed his son as a living weapon in all but name and sought for him to be the ultimate warrior. Anything else was unacceptable to the man, and would take brutal methods to contain his son’s power and harness it as the tool of his vengeance, such as putting a collar on Broly as at some point he began to fear his son’s monstrous raw power. However in truth as Broly met Cheelai and Lemo, was a gentle giant and rather peaceful and friendly. The problem is his emotions are directly connected to his legendary power and his anger can get easily out of control and enters a berserker state all too easily, and Paragus refused to let him develop any "weakness" that impeded the purpose his father and Frieza saw him for. What makes it sadder is that despite the abuse Paragus put him through, Broly still holds respect and care for his father and actually becomes what makes him become a Super Saiyan after seeing him "killed by his own stray energy blast"…

Yet once returned to his home with Cheelai and Lemo defecting to live with him,Goku offered better living conditions and later moved to Beerus’s planet, becomes a sparring partner and ally for Goku and Vegeta.

Hated Tropes [Hated trope] “I made a mistake, it was an accident!”

Thumbnail

The classic “I made a mistake, it was an accident that I cheated on you.” excuse, where the character thinks it should let them off the hook and don’t actually take accountability for causing their partner they’re supposed to be faithful to a lot of emotional pain!

Lisa from Along Came Polly is one of the biggest examples I can think of! She cheats on Reuben ON their honeymoon with the scuba diving instructor, and chooses to keep exploring that until she got bored and immediately tried to get back with Reuben when he even tells her to not even think about that! She thinks they can simply move on from it, and doesn’t seem to grasp the concept that what she did is unforgivable!

Blaire in Unfriended, the whole time she’s exposed tries to make herself sound like she is the victim and is more sorry over the fact that she’s been caught! Having no intention of ever telling her boyfriend, that she slept with his best friend while they were together!

Star Wars - Count Dooku leaves the Republic and forms the Confederacy after finally getting fed up with the Republic's endless corruption and cronyism. But he does many horrific acts and only uses the Separatists as a means to an end to bring the galaxy under sith control

Marvel - Magneto makes a point about mutants and humankind being unable to coexist peacefully. His backstory as a holocaust survivor adds more weight to this as he believes the minority will always be oppressed. He wanted mutants to live freely without fear, but his methods to achieve that were extreme

  1. Fury (2014) Shia LaBeouf pulled his own tooth out with a pair of pliers after failing to find a dentist that would do it, thinking it would give his character texture.

  2. Chapter 27 (2007) Jared Leto gained 67 pounds to play Mark David Chapman by drinking microwaved pints of Häagen-Dazs ice cream mixed with olive oil and soy sauce. The rapid weight gain gave him gout and forced him to use a wheelchair due to the pain.

  3. All Things Fall (2011) - 50 Cent lost over 50 pounds for his role as a college football player diagnosed with cancer through a liquid diet and running on a treadmill for three hours a day over nine weeks.

Yamcha - Dragon Ball Super

In dragon ball, Yamcha has it pretty rough. He hasn't won a fight since OG dragon ball, and was outclassed almost as soon as he was introduced. By the buu saga, yamcha had all but given up on being one of the Z-fighters and tried playing baseball instead. But here's the thing: Yamcha still has basically superhuman strength, he just so happens to surround himself with people vastly stronger than him. He uses his martial arts skills and ki control to become a rich and famous baseball star.

Shocker - Spiderman / Ms Marvel

Shocker has become an absolute joke in Spider-Man and tired of being constantly beaten down by the many, MANY superheroes in Nyc, he decided to move to new jersey as it only has one superhero defending it. The inexperienced teenager, Ms Marvel. Due to the fact that shocker actually has quite a good power and literal decades of fighting experience, he actually puts up a very good fight and the only reason he doesn't win is because Ms Marvel is teleported away.

Characters [Loved trope] Sometimes, betrayal is for the abuse

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Nobody likes the traitors, that for sure, but sometimes, the betrayal have a real reason and we can applaud it

This is for characters that betray someone because that person or group constantly mistreats, mock or just are a bunch of assholes with him or her

Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones: Tyrion doesn't have it easy, his birth killed his mother, a fact that his family never stopped emphasizing to him, has dwarfism in a medieval society, and have bad luck with women, but he always tried to live up to the Lannister name, but nobody respect him, no matter what he done to help his family or the kingdom, even blaming him to poison Joffrey just because they constantly clash, at the end, Tyrion throw his family to the shit and helps the rebels

Sigrun Engel from Wolfenstein: Being the daughter of a nazi in a world where the nazis won the war with magic Jewish technology (yes, im not joking) is hard, but being the daughter of a female version of Himmler, its a nightmare, and probably Sigrun have it harder that others: Her excess of weight was constantly a target for her mother (she even thought to euthanizing her just because she’s fat); her soft personality doesn't help with a mother that can play football with the heads of the prisoners and the final straw was read Sigrun dairy and yell his content with all the soldiers, at the end, Herr Engel create her fall being better with her soldiers than her daughter

Arthur Edwards from Hitman: HITMAN World of Assassination: Arthur Edwards tried hard his whole life, being the second in command of the Shadow Government isn't an easy job and Arthur wanted to prove being the best, specially coming from a more more humble origin that his bosses, but at the end, for them he was nothing just a pawn, no matter how much Arthur efforts, he would never be a Partner, because he have to climb for the success instead of born in it like the rest, in that moment, Arthur decides that a "change of direction" would be necessary

Personality [Interesting Trope] Villain is the number #1 charter member of their heroes fan club

Thumbnail

So sum up of these:

Reverse Flash. Guy from the future named Eobard Thawne. Originally just a theif who took inspiration from the Flash, he became the universe's biggest Flash Fanboy. He went back in time to meet his hero, only for him to figure out either that the Flash didn't view him as his best friend or that he was destined to die at The Flash's hands (take your pick). He since dedicated his life to destroying him. But he's still the world's biggest Flash fanboy.

Lex. Nothing more to say. Hates Superman so much but any suggestion that Superman isn't the best, most amazing dude ever that he is squaring off against is an insult to him that he will not abide by.

Joker. Once again, self explanatory. Joker loves Batman and thinks hes great and wants to play their game foerver and will become deeply hurt if anyone suggests Batman isn't fucking awesome.

Spoilers for Dragon Ball and Deltarune!

Goku - Dragon Ball

During the Goku vs. Frieza arc of the Namek Saga, Goku was initially ready embarrass Frieza by beating him when he was at full strength. By the time his Super Saiyan form wore off, he realized he only wanted to humble Freiza into not wanting to fight again, or if he does he'd want him to get stronger. When Frieza manipulates him into giving his energy, Frieza tries to backstab him, but Goku deflects, and ends up taking his life.

Ralsei - Deltarune

In Chapter 1 of Deltarune, Ralsei tries to Teach Kris into sparing or pacifying their enemies, and for the most part he was right. However, when he tried to do the same for King, he almost got the Lancer Fan Club killed if not for Susie.

You could use Chapter 5 as an example but Flowery was at his worst, kinda annoying. Chapter 4, I wouldn't count it since he never tried to spare the Titans in the first place

miscellaneous (Loved trope) Action-heavy media has a story arc that is more of a thriller where cunning and battles of wit are the focus

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

The uprising arc (Attack On Titan) it's the first arc where our main characters have to fight humans instead of titans, where the government of the walls started hunting the scouts for getting dangerously close to finding out the truth about their world. The conflict focused more on who will get the working class on their side, the scouts who genuinely fight for humanity or the selfish government that hides many truths from it's people.

First half of the Atlas arc (RWBY) during volume 7 of the show the tone shifted slightly as the story focused more on a political battle between 3 rivals, Ironwood who is Atlas's military commander, Robyn Hill who fights for the poor people of Mantle city and Jacque Schnee who is a greedy corporate asshole. All this was happening as Ironwood and our main characters were having a cat and mouse game with the main villains of the story.

Yorknew arc (Hunter x Hunter) what was more a typical battle shonen before this arc, with entrance exams and tournaments drastically changed vibes in this arc as it turned more into a neo-noir thriller where one of our main characters plays a cat and mouse game with the criminal group that earned his wrath after killing his clan. Honestly this arc felt more like a vigilante detective hunting down a gang as they hunt him down at the same time.

The fort Briggs arc (Fullmetal Alchemist) honestly there were always thriller elements in FMA before this point in the story but none of it felt as condensed as the Briggs arc. It's the part of the story where we uncover many conspiracies, where our main characters make allies with the military branch in the Northern Briggs to then have a battle of wits with central command as both sides start slowly closing in on each other through cunning, blackmail, hostages, encoded messages and overall many underhanded tactics.

Sokka (Avatar the Last Airbender) - Plenty of cool moments in battle where he has to use his intelligence and wit as he is the only one is the group who can't bend. Honestly a hilarious character who can show that he can serious when he needs to be.

Alebrije (Legend Quest) - One of the MVP’s of the show. Not only has he put his life on the line for his team on multiple occasions, but he can read people's personalities/emotions surprisingly well and give advice to them in serious moments.

Powers (Loved Trope) Part of their Powers or Training is that they are able to intake a ridiculous amount of alcohol and not get drunk

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Durzo Blint (Night Angel Trilogy)

Possesses a magical artifact called a Ka’kari, that gives the user a multitude of abilities. It also devours magic and other substances such as perfumes and colognes causing the wearer to have no scent. It also devours alcohol and other poisons consumed by the possessor making it very hard for them to get drunk.

Geralt of Rivia (Witcher Series)

Because of his mutations his metabolism is superhuman causing him to process most toxins extremely well and fast compared to a normal person. This allows him to drink Witcher potions and brews that would kill normal people but also makes it very hard for Witchers to get drunk.

Sterling Archer (Archer)

Sterling is just an alcoholic just like his mother. We see him drugged in an episode and wakes up way earlier than expected as his heavy drinking has made his body extremely efficient at processing toxins.

Groups Gang of Hats: Organizations/group all share a common theme/dressing convention

Thumbnail

  • Chembaron's Gangs (Arcane: League of Legends): Each of the Chembaron's minions wear uniforms that align with their leader's. For instance, Chross' dress like British gentlemen, while Smeech's dress up in ratty versions of the upper class's clothes.
  • Madlantis Pirates (Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii): The pirates of Madlantis can be diveded into three groups, each serving one of the three pirate lords. Queen Michele's personal fleet dresses like naval officers, the members of the Mortimer Armada wear a mix of old-time/stereotypical pirate garb and modern sailor clothes, and Madlantis Security - which answers directly to Raymond Law - are decked out in modern spec ops gear.
  • Saima Beasts (Kyukyu Sentai GoGoV): There are four types of Saima Beasts, belonging to the four Saima Children and representing one of the four classical elements. Cobolda's Earth beasts tend to be predominantly colored brown, Zylpheeza's Air beasts tend to have wing-like appendages, Denus' Water beasts tend to be colored black and have fins/tentacles/webbing and Drop/Salamandes' Fire beasts all have a fire pattern somewhere on their bodies.

Rashid ad-Din Sinan - assassin's creed.

Based on a historical figure. The mentor of the Assassin order, Altair's father figure, ruler of Masiaf, and the main antagonist of the first game.

Hassan-i Sabbah (allegedly) - Trench Crusade

No art of him exists, here's a random assassin

The mentor of the mystic (high out of their minds) assassins operating out of Alamut (outside the iron wall).

Alamut can't be conquered because 1 he has the ring of Solomon, so any demon that gets near gets enslaved, 2 the approach of the castle warps itself and heretics die of old age before getting near and 3 the assassin are so high they can bend time and space themselves while taking out officers

miscellaneous You cannot defeat evil, only contain it (at best)

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

A happy ending like Sauron exploding after throwing the ring? No, that doesn't work here.

  1. The "truth" of the Heart of Darkness – *Darkest Dungeon*: After reaching the depths of the estate, standing before the gateway to an ancient, millennial evil, sacrificing two members of your party, and defeating the Heart of Darkness, everything returns to normal—right? Well, as it turns out, the estate is trapped in a kind of temporal loop. All the progress you made to restore it is undone: buildings crumble, and the Heart returns to continue devouring human flesh—whether that of its own cultists or of the fools who dare to explore the dungeon. And as for you? You can only do what the Ancestor did: bring in another relative to keep the swirling vortex of madness emanating from the Darkest Dungeon at bay, while you take your own life, driven to it by the new, terrible knowledge you have just uncovered. And—in a final, chilling display of existential horror—one day the planets will align, and the Heart of Darkness will burst forth from the earth, shattering the planet like an egg. Ruin has come to our family.

  2. The Warp—in Warhammer 40k, Chaos and the Warp are nothing more than a reflection of the collective psyche of all the galaxy's intelligent species. Ever since the Warp tore the thin veil between the material and the immaterial (first with the opening of the Eye of Terror, and now with the *Cicatrix Maledictum*), Chaos has invaded our world, and the Chaos Gods further muddy the waters with their machinations—it took only a whisper here and a nudge there to spark the Horus Heresy and ruin the Emperor's project. No matter how many prayers, sanctified relics, or promethium blasts are thrown at the problem, Chaos will remain; as long as it has its sustenance—the collective psyche, not worship, as the Emperor claimed—Chaos will continue to exist and attempt to corrupt the material world. The only way to win this fight would be to kill every sentient being in the galaxy capable of impacting the Warp (good luck with that) or turn them all into Blanks—neither of which is viable. All that remains is to pray fervently that Chaos does not further upset the balance.

  3. The war on drugs—*The Wire*: one can hardly call it a "war," since wars eventually end; but regardless, consider a more realistic example: in the decaying city of Baltimore, there is no way to halt the spiral of violence that constitutes the war on drugs. The police are more concerned with generating statistics and meeting quotas for "solved" crimes than with actual police work, acting only when something threatens to upset the status quo. As for the drug gangs, even if one or two individuals might desire a more "civilized" way of operating, the reality is that violence remains an essential component of how the drug trade is managed (as Stringer Bell discovered). Ultimately, those with good intentions are displaced by those who understand how the game is played; the best they can do is join forces to push things forward, only for the cycle to repeat itself endlessly in an eternal dance among all these players.

Characters [Interesting Trope] The Writers Wanted You To Sympathize With Them But The Audience Still Doesnt

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

The Boys Lamplighter is supposed to be seen as a tragic character, who killed Mallory's grandchildren by mistake, and between that and his dreams of becoming famous for his father, has become a depressed Death Seeker. However, some felt this failed to make sympathetic, because he is introduced helping test Compound V, even killing people who Stormfront is displeased with, and isn't shown doing anything to help people he himself claims need it. This isn't helped by the fact that when he and Hughie are in the Seven Tower, Lamplighter sets himself on fire activating the alarms and alerting the building with little regard to what might happen afterward. Worse, his personality after escaping and hiding with the Boys makes him seem like an asshole who forces Hughie to watch porn that makes him uncomfortable. These traits make it hard to see him as a tragic character for some viewers.

Victoria in the Season 4 finale tries to pull a "Not So Different" Remark on Hughie, calling him on Butcher chopping off Sameer's leg so he could make more of the supe-killing virus, never mind that she was the one who put him in that position in the first place. In any case it pales in comparison to the numerous people she murdered and deceived during her rise to power, as well as turning her own daughter into a monster, who then committed murder herself. Given that her attempted turn to good was brought about more because she realized she'd have no power if she got elected president, she comes across less as being motivated to protect Zoe and more trying to dodge consequences now that her Karma Houdini Warranty has run out. Her sudden death comes across as very karmic rather than the Villain's Dying Grace it was ended as.

Justice League Cadmus the writers of this show has stated that Project Cadmus, the anti-Justice League government think tank in the fourth season, were supposed to be sympathetic Anti Villains with a strong point about the dangers of unrestricted superhumans. In fact, the writers found Cadmus so sympathetic that they introduced a Conflict Killer in the form of Brainiac so he could be revealed as having been manipulating both sides to avoid having to paint either Cadmus or the League as in the wrong. Fans, on the other hand, overwhelmingly sided with the League, considering Cadmus's deeds included attempting to nuke an inhabited island simply to kill Superman and Doomsday, creating Doomsday to begin with, manufacturing an army of cloned Slave Mooks and sending them to massacre the League, including the completely innocent Watchtower staff, and teaming up with supervillains including Lex Luthor, all before the League had done much of anything to them. If anything, the audience viewed Cadmus causing all that shit just to get justification for what they do.

Lore A Common Lore Critism Is Addressed In A Piece Of Side-Content

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Pokémon Masters EX- A common criticism in Pokémon is that Lance, The Kanto Champion and Dragon Trainer, uses non-dragon type Pokémon such as Gyarados, Charizard, and Aerodactyl on his team. In this game, he explains not every dragon Pokémon is a dragon-type.

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Legacy Edition- The protagonist of the game has the option to ask Gandalf why the Fellowship didn't simply have the eagles drop The One Ring into the ocean or fly it directly to Mount Doom, a common question among the fanbase.

Gandalf explains that they don't know what dwells in the ocean and that it wouldn't destroy the ring, possibly leaving it to return in the future. As far as flying the ring to Mount Doom, not only do The Great Eagles not take orders from them, but they'd almost certainly be spotted by The Eye of Sauron and no match for The Ring Wraiths.
