urgent help please!!

Hey everyone, I’m in a really sticky situation right now.

My brand-new 2026 Toyota Corolla Hybrid, which I bought just two days ago, was hit from both the front and the back about two hours ago while it was parked. The person who hit it was a girl who apparently doesn’t have a driving license.

It’s now 3 AM, and I’ve just gotten home. The hood is completely bent out of shape, so I can’t close it properly. The problem is that my dashboard won’t turn off, even after locking the car, because the car keeps detecting that the hood is open.

I pressed the POWER button, and the READY indicator disappeared, but the car is still showing ACCESSORY mode. I’ve tried pressing the POWER button again, but nothing changes.

I can’t reach any support at this hour, and I’m worried that leaving the dashboard and screen on all night will drain the 12V battery.

Has anyone experienced this with a Corolla Hybrid? Is there a way to completely turn off the car without closing the hood or disconnecting the battery?

I’d really appreciate any help. I’m exhausted and just want to make sure I don’t wake up to a dead battery on top of everything else...

Let insurance handle. Start the rental car booking process and the police report.

I think the battery is in the trunk area on the corolla hybrids, underneath the mat area

Only on the 1.8 , 2.0 is in the trunk

That must be a non North America thing. The Corolla hybrid doesn't have a 2.0L option.

My US 2024 CC Hybrid XSE is 2.0L and the battery is in the cargo area.

Sorry about this. Be sure to file for diminished value in your loss claim. Hopefully it’s totaled.

But other driver was unlicensed so unless you go after their personal assets you are unlikely to get DV

The other car could be insured, although that's somewhat unlikely. It might belong to someone else who has insurance, and unlicensed drivers can still own cars and carry insurance on them.

All that said... for all the online chatter about diminished value, it's quite rare and difficult in the real world outside of very expensive cars.

This is a nearly new Corolla that is almost certainly totaled. DV is unlikely to enter the equation.

Sounds like a DUI situation where insurance wasn’t involved and no cops were called. That sounds like an expensive decision.

Don't worry about the car anymore.

Insurance will total this car to minimize the loss. Do not accept first offer if you can afford to be without that car for few weeks, and make sure they pay you the full price of the vehicle so that you can get another one without spending any additional money.

Who gives a ruby red rat's ass about a dead battery? The car is almost certainly totaled. It's scrap, and it doesn't sound safe to drive at all.

Why didn't the police have it towed?

It's mostly your insurance company's problem now.

If their claims center not open, you'll have to get in touch first thing in the morning. Hopefully you have rental car coverage. You'll need to find some other way to work, or take the morning off to deal with everything and get a rental.

Your insurance will work with the repair shop to declare it totaled and/or come up with a repair estimate. And then you'll have more hassle to buy a replacement car, etc. and so on.

If the owner of the other car doesn't have insurance (even if the other driver was unlicensed, the car owner's insurance, if any, will kick in), then your uninsured motorist coverage should kick in. You'll have to spend some time on all this, but you shouldn't lose money. It sounds like no one got hurt, so it's just stuff. Cars can be replaced.

If the car did have insurance, you can still work with your insurance company and they'll recover from the other insurance. It may take more time to get your deductible back.

The above assumes you're in the US, of course. Maybe things are different if you're not in the US.

Press and hold the power button for a long time. Often this will force it to power down.

After disconnect the car will have to be reprogrammed. Just get with insurance and get it to a GOOD shop. Best if luck.

Front and rear accidents will cause them to total the car. File a claim immediately.

You will have to tinker with the hood latch sensor that is on the hood. Otherwise known as the place where your hood latches into, so you find the hood latch sensor wire, and find where its housed, and there should be a form of a metal tab that would be pressed down as your hood is open. You would need to remove it, and allow it to depress for the car to think that the hood is closed. Other than that that's going to be the best bet.

But in experience I don't think you'll have much of an issue. Your 12v should survive one cycle of it being on nonetheless.

  1. I think the 12V battery is in the trunk.
  2. I believe you can force the car to shut off by pressing and holding the power button for an extended period, thirty seconds or something.
  3. Open the hood and press the latch into the locked position using a screwdriver or something. That should trick the car into thinking the hood is closed.
  4. Good luck, brother. That sucks.
