The media's silence on the University of Kansas false rape case (Horocofsky v. City of Lawrence) shows a massive double standard
Look at the wall-to-wall national media coverage the Cornell fraternity case got the second a lawsuit was filed, and compare it to the total media blackout on Horocofsky v. City of Lawrence out of the University of Kansas Law School. The media loves to run explosive headlines the day an accusation is made, especially when it involves an Ivy League school and a press release from a plaintiff’s lawyer. Meanwhile, when a case at a state school in Kansas actually exposes a false allegation in black and white through federal court records, national reporters pretend it doesn't exist because it doesn't fit the narrative they want to sell.
In the University of Kansas case, a female law student named Bobbie Jo Horocofsky accused a male classmate, Joel Thompson, of rape, claiming she was too drunk to consent. When Lawrence police actually did their jobs and checked her phone, they found coherent, properly spelled texts she sent her friend at 2:00 AM right after the hookup saying, "I fucked up and slept with Joel" and panicking about what her boyfriend would say. Hours later, she texted that she was embarrassed and didn't know if it was rape, before filing a felony police report anyway. When the police arrested her on three counts of false reporting (and a judge agreed there was probable cause to put her on trial), her excuse was that her iPhone's "autocorrect" made her sound sober. Even worse, after a politically spineless DA quietly dropped the charges against her right before trial without explanation, she had the nerve to sue the detectives who caught her lying, claiming they were discriminating against her as a woman.
Recently, the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals finally threw out all of her federal claims, ruling that police following hard digital evidence is good policing, not sexism. Yet where is the national media outrage for Joel Thompson, whose life she nearly ruined, or the detectives who got dragged through eight years of federal lawsuits just for reading her text messages? Even in the Cornell case, we are watching the exact same media double standard play out in real time: the initial accusation got front-page treatment, while the unsealing of the 99-page internal report showing a negative ketamine test and a finding that the initial three-way encounter was consensual barely gets a whisper. The media will megaphone an accusation in five minutes, but when the receipts prove a guy was falsely accused, you get nothing but crickets.
