Discussion GGs

I was SO excited that they were on sale and back in stock since both of my controllers are broken, I NEED replacements, and they refused RMAs. I added them to my cart, and it just doesn't go through. Looked for used ones on Ebay and Marketplace, nothing for under $400. It's so frustrating man, when Frame was announced they said they were discussing internally about outsourcing production for basestation supported hardware; but I guess that fell through. I wouldn't be so upset about this if we could just flat out BUY a Steam Frame, but I'm on the waitlist and could be waiting until 2028 for all we know.

RIP Index
RIP true PCVR support

Whats wrong with your current pair? The Index controllers are so notoriously flakey that it shouldnt be too difficult to find someone to do repair work for you if need be, especially if its the sticks. Dude, the sticks are so bad.

The finger presence on the right one is messed up with the middle and ring fingers, making playing Pavlov or Contractors almost impossible. Sometimes they'll randomly start working fine, but for no longer than like 30 seconds and they're fucked up again (the trackpad haptics on that hand also stopped working but I don't really care about that *too* much). https://www.reddit.com/r/ValveIndex/s/dMYSUjw6IA

The left one has a broken thumbstick cap with slight drift and the finger tracking also spazzes out sometimes slightly on a random finger, but it's not too noticeable compared to the right one...

I'm not saying the right one isn't a hardware defect, but just in case, I wanted to mention that you can calibrate your finger placement by "rolling" your fingers (placing one down and picking it back up, then the next, then the next) repeatedly until they start acting right

Tried that and ran through the whole shabang with Steam support twice, to no avail unfortunately. They said "It appears that the right controller has a hardware issue and is in need of replacement. However, as of now we cannot send you a replacement unit." and just gave me links to iFixIt, and they don't even have ANY info on replacing the finger sensors... Rare Valve L

Ordered a new tether as soon as I heard they were selling out all the old stock, thankfully it went through fine.

I actually don't even need one, mine has worked fine even though I disconnect it from the break away point every session, it just looks like I won't be able to get a Frame for a good while so better safe than sorry.

There are companies that make 3rd oarty controllers that i do believe you can get to work with the indx. I believe they are called gripvr, dont remember their price though

u/Wonderful-Lie-3554 3d ago

sadly they are more expensive than valve and in my opinion the product is worse

1

u/meta358 3d ago

I mean valve isnt going to sell them starting here soon. So you cant be cheaper then a product is t being sold. Also im curious why you think they are worse. From what i can tell they have all the same features minus that thunb track pad ive never really seen ever get used

Vive wands are a supported valve vr controller that works with the index

10

u/CircoModo1602 4d ago

And also a significant downgrade over literally any other controller.

-4

u/Interesting-Bug1167 4d ago

It's cheap if you have base station 1.0s, they sell for 20 - 30 aud per controller used

4

u/CircoModo1602 4d ago

And what index owner is going to have 1.0s if they come with 2.0s?

The vive wands are less worth it than when they were the only option.

2

u/Messyfingers 4d ago

A lot of people had 1.0 base stations from various headsets that preceded the index, unless the index was someone's first headset it's quite likely they had/have 1.0s

2

u/excildor 4d ago

Me, I do.

3

u/hawkdeathpaw 4d ago

as a person who had wands with a index do not they fucking suck butthole

3

u/CircoModo1602 4d ago

I'm aware, even at their release they were questionable but there was no other option.

Nobody should be using wands in 2026 unless they physically have 0 other options.

1

u/hawkdeathpaw 4d ago

as me i had no money to spend 1000 on index controlelrs (my country sucks) so i find broken ones with accepable sticks that work my current pair the right stick doesnt work at all so i set the touchpad thing as rotate in ovr toolkit

2

u/richtofin819 3d ago

The tracking is fine, it's the lack of analog stick and real button options that suck.

As someone who tried to play tf2 vr with them and then gave up and grabbed an index it is night and day.

1

u/Wonderful-Lie-3554 3d ago

as somebody that still has vive wands laying around, you couldnt pay me to use them

1

u/Interesting-Bug1167 3d ago

They're not that bad as a temporary replacement if your touchpads arent broken

1

u/Wonderful-Lie-3554 3d ago

they are borderline unusable for higher level beatsaber, have the worst toggle grip design ive seen on any of the controllers ive tried, the trackpad movement shouldve been abandoned when it didnt work out for valve the first time, the buttons being areas of the trackpads feels wrong in every way and when playing beat saber with a semi comfortable grip atleast i kept accidentally pausing the game.
on top of that, most people got the index as a full kit and use the 2.0 base stations which arent compatible with the cheaper wands

u/tastygames_official 4d ago

I wonder if I should set up shop as an Index repairman...

1

u/Wonderful-Lie-3554 3d ago

we so need this, the index controllers are like the only decent lighthouse controllers

1

u/Gangrif 2d ago

Can I send you my botched right knuckle battery repair? Lol. I gave the repair a shot after valve refused to replace or repair my controller and just made it worse. Damn battery connector broke off the board. These things are so terribly put together

5

u/Tyrthemis 4d ago

OP please PM me, I’ll get you a controller.

3

u/zarifang 4d ago

RIP to the best vr controllers ever made.

u/lavafrend 2d ago

Ive never used the index, but after using the steam frame controllers I definitely feel like they are a contender for #1 because of their utility, and the fact that they also have not half bad finger tracking

2

u/WhiskeyWarmachine 4d ago

My wife just got at me this morning because we need a right replacement and all that's available on our steam store is left controller's. And now we've put it off too long.

1

u/KeeperOfWind 4d ago

Wait can you still buy these? Because I wanted a set for my psvr2

Shows me its on sale but go the page where they're ending support

1

u/filthyg666 2d ago

Try Facebook marketplace. I bought a pair for $150

1

u/subermario 2d ago

I think the worst part of this is that they are leaving a gap where you will likely be unable to replace a part of your Index Kit whlie also be unable to buy their new Steam Frame kit. I feel like I'm almost compelled to get a few base stations to "last the winter" before the Steam Frame is more readily available or featuring a better model QD/OLED Hot swappable battery or BMR headphone strap.

1

u/PiercingMist700 2d ago

VALVe said they were “open to discussion” about keeping the old base stations and index but they knew the frame was the future for them.

After 7 years

u/itanite 4d ago

A used quest 3 would get you 90% of Frame functionality for the price of those controllers. Just sayin.

10

u/AceyReddit 4d ago

zucks not gonna go out and personally thank you for helping market his spyware slop

2

u/Wonderful-Lie-3554 3d ago

its a wonder he didnt put his affiliate link

15

u/LilyButEpic 4d ago

Screw Meta. And they're the only controllers capable of finger presence, besides Steam Frame which you can't even buy outright :/

-12

u/itanite 4d ago

and how often do you actually utilize that one feature in any game that isn't VRChat?

12

u/LilyButEpic 4d ago

When I play Half Life Alyx?? Boneworks?? Bonelab?? Contractors?? Pavlov?? Blade and Sorcery??

-19

u/itanite 4d ago

yes, it's a neat visual appeal but....what functionality does it actually give you in game?

I realize I'm on the wrong sub for non-valve-self-fellatio here but you guys have some of the most bass-ackward approaches to things any practical adult would laugh at.

Ya'll hated on SLAM until Valve did it, and honestly Meta does it better.

Ya'll completely fucking shit all over eye tracking until Valve did it, meanwhile on the Quest Pro I've been using ETFR/ETFE for >2.5 years, and ya'll can't even buy a fucking headset.

If you can't buy a Frame, get a Quest 3 until you can. If you won't do that simply because it's not a Valve product, well you get what you deserve. We have rooted Meta headsets with complete control now.

9

u/DeadlyAidan 4d ago

ok and what if I simply don't want to give Facebook money or data?

-1

u/itanite 4d ago

Buy it from Steve, the guy over on Main Street instead, and disable it's telemetry and gain FULL control via the root exploits we have.

Or just wait 6-24 more months until Valve decides you're good enough to be a customer.

3

u/DeadlyAidan 4d ago

what about the 6Ghz dongle? the foveated streaming? the finger tracking?

also, I don't want to fucking root exploit my headset to make it usable, I've waited 4 years, I can wait another

u/itanite 4d ago edited 4d ago

The dongle is basically a 6ghz access point on a USB-3.1 interface at 5gbps. While it's a nice, first-party solution, there's many other options that are functionally equivalent. Ethernet for most systems to a different router or AP will actually probably net better performance than the dongle in most cases. The biggest thing is getting on the 6ghz band, which is largely uncongested and wide open for huge amounts of VR bandwidth.

I use my laptop's integrated Intel card that can do AP mode while also operating as a client, and also carry a portable wifi 7 router that has a 6ghz band and a 2.5gbe ethernet uplink, as well as USB3 5gbps as well if I want to use USB. (Mudi 7)

Quest actually has real hand tracking not relying on a controller. Valve folks have no idea how outdated the fingertracking argument is.

Also I've had foveated streaming on Quest Pro for >2.5 years and foveated rendering almost as long in most games via 3rd party utilities.

The recent root firmware hack also allows you to overclock the panels to 120hz at full resolution. Nice bump up from 90hz stock.

I just want to be clear, I hate Meta and Zuck, and do have the privacy concerns. I'm just trying to make sure that everyone knows Quests are really nice cheap PCVR options if you want something now, are willing to accept the relatively minor caveats, and understand their limtations.

1

u/itanite 4d ago

Oh and you know what else I have? Color passthrough. (it does kinda suck though the Quest 3 is vastly better)

1

u/LilyButEpic 4d ago edited 4d ago

VR is about immersion. You can say that about full body tracking, but I still think THAT'S worth it too as a VR enthusiast. Go have fun with your privacy invasive M*ta headsets, with less functionality than an almost eight year old PCVR headset.

You're making it sound like I'm just a Valve cock sucker, idk what this "y'all" and "you guys" is about because I used to play on Quest 1 in 2019 and Quest 2 since launch until I got an Index in 2024. I don't care about standalone. I just want a modern working PCVR setup. Frame to me is literally just Index with higher specs. That's it.

Grow up.

0

u/InternetUser1807 4d ago

Slam tracking sucks, regardless of if valve or meta or whomever is doing it.

Grip buttons are a huge downgrade in immersion from Index. Steam Frame having finger tracking is a nice consolation prize, but still a downgrade.

4

u/TacoRalf 4d ago

you obviously never used index controllers before
