PSA Weekly Question Thread - Rules & Comp Qs

This is the Weekly Question thread designed to allow players to ask their one-off tactical or rules clarification questions in one easy to find place on the sub.

This means that those questions will get guaranteed visibility, while also limiting the amount of one-off question posts that can usually be answered by the first commenter.

Have a question? Post it here! Know the answer? Don't be shy!

NOTE - this thread is also intended to be for higher level questions about the meta, rules interactions, FAQ/Errata clarifications, etc. This is not strictly for beginner questions only!

I had a question about wound allocation with Aeldari guardians. Both guardian squads have some kind of platform with them (either a heavy weapons platform or a serpent's scale platform). Both platforms have 2 wounds, but they also die if all of the guardians die. Because they're just members of the unit (rather than support members or something), that means I can allocate wounds to them before I kill off all of my guardians, right? If so, then is there any reason why I wouldn't kill off a platform before killing off my last guardian?

And also, is there anything my opponent could do to attack my platform before my other guardians? My understanding is that [Precision] won't work, because they're not characters. I can't think of anything else, but am still learning the rules.

Thank you!

So the way that save allocation works is that you separate your unit into allocation groups, as prescribed in 05.03. So you’ll end up with one group for the guardians, one group for the platform, and then a group for each attached character.

Because of this, you must keep taking saves on the guardians, and can’t switch to the platform just before the last guardian is killed. But, you can change the group order between activations (provided there are no damaged models). So if one unit shoots you and kills 8 guardians. When the next unit attacks you can choose to put the platform allocation group first. But if that first activation kills 10 guardians, then the platform is just lost.

I hope that clears it up, feel free to ask if you still have any questions

Okay, I think that clears it up, thank you! So, rereading 05.03, the reason I can divide them up that way is that they have a different number of wounds, correct? (and similarly, I don't have to divide my storm guardians into different groups if they have different weapons)

This leaves me with a follow-up question: is the "Create Groups" step in 05.03.01 something that is done per unit attacking, or per attack? Like, if my opponent shot me with 1 lascannon and 10 bolter attacks, could I choose to resolve the bolter attacks first (with my guardians as the 1st activation group), and then switch activation groups when the lascannon attacks?

Sorry, I should've been clearer. You go through the create groups step for each attack sequence. So yes, you do this for each separate weapon type.
