dumb question from ignorant man incoming- What's the advantage of doing this over traditional breast feeding? is it just so you don't get bit

In the US, for example, in addition to what others have said, women are only guaranteed 6 weeks of unpaid leave after giving birth. Many women can’t afford to even take that 6 weeks off to physically recover, and lower income working mothers who want to provide breast milk often take on a huge additional burden by pumping because they are forced to return to work before it is reasonable for them to do so.

Yes my entire leave was 12 weeks max, unpaid, for both of my kids.

totally depends on your job. educated white collar job? nah you're getting paid, my company even gives paternity 8 weeks paid while our health insurance fucking sucks. otherwise, unless you're union (so northeast or big city west coast), you're shit out of luck, there is no legal mandate for it

Even “good jobs” don’t offer women anything close to a reasonable amount of paid leave. Either way though, it shouldn’t be dependent on your job and that’s the point.

I’m blue collar and part of the union. We got 2 days, company keeps us under 50 employees as well so no FMLA. Flip side I pay next to nothing insurance and didn’t see a bill for the c section and 3 day recovery stay.
