Reminder: Zero Tolerance for Hate Speech and Harassment

We've noticed an increase in comments making off-color or outright hostile remarks about ICE, immigration enforcement, and vulnerable communities. Comments such as "ICE should just round them all up," "Was ICE there? Hopefully," and similar remarks violate Reddit’s policy against hate based on identity or vulnerability.

Why This Violates Policy:

Reddit explicitly prohibits content that promotes hate or harassment based on race, nationality, or other protected characteristics. Calls for mass enforcement actions against specific groups, jokes that dehumanize immigrants, and antagonistic remarks directed at individuals based on their identity all fall under this policy.

We want to be clear: this is not up for debate. Whether serious or "just a joke," this kind of rhetoric contributes to a hostile and unwelcoming environment.

Enforcement Moving Forward:

  • Comments promoting or celebrating harm toward any group will be removed.
  • Repeat offenders or those engaging in blatant hate speech will be permanently banned.
  • If you see a comment that violates these rules, report it rather than engaging.

We expect our community to engage in discussions with respect. Keep it civil, keep it policy-focused, and most importantly, remember that behind every policy debate are real people with real lives.

Thank you for helping us maintain a welcoming and inclusive space.

I love NY Pizza has been sold ... And the new owners are notorious slumlords....

Todays Wilmington biz teports that downtown's I love NY pizza has been sold...

"MoMentum Companies, a Wilmington-based commercial real estate and business brokerage firm, announced the sale of I Love NY Pizza to Megan Jackson and Jeremy Bailey for an undisclosed sum."

The release said customers “should expect the things they love most about it to stay exactly the same” at the longtime Wilmington establishment at 28 N. Front St.

Unfortunately, the new owners are well known Wilmington "slumlords"

According to whqr, the couple have a history of exploitive, unsafe and unsanitary business practices and were brought in front of City council in 2022 for being slumlords..

"In a case of bipartisan agreement, every member of council expressed similar sentiments. Neil Anderson said, "you're basically a slumlord, and you're just getting what you can get, and doing nothing. And it's profitable for you. And you don't care about human beings, man."

Councilman Charlie Rivenbark compared the conditions to that created by a previous landlord who had come before council.

"I wish there was some way we could sentence him to have to live in one of his units," he said.

And...

Bailey and his partner, Megan Jackson, own at least 18 rental properties in New Hanover County between them. And Mayor Saffo wasn’t taking his excuses.

"You've got exposed wiring somebody can get electrocuted. You've got unsanitary bathrooms and kitchens. I mean, do you go in here at all? Or you just say, 'here, give me your money and just walk in the door?'" he asked Bailey.

Saffo added, "Because it looks it sounds to me, that's what you're doing. You're just taking the money. You don't even care what the heck's going on inside. Unfortunately, you give him property owners and property managers a bad name. This is horrifying, man.”

So I guess I won't be getting pizza there anymore!

You are not able to vote in the NC Senate District 7 race of Michael Lee (R) vs Jessica Bichler (D). You were gerrymandered into NC Senate District 8 with Brunswick and Columbus counties.

Here is more information on your district before you go out to vote. https://ballotpedia.org/North_Carolina_State_Senate_District_8

Halloween with 1 year old

Hi! Title pretty much says it all. We have a 14 month old so she walks but still can’t do much. We bought matching family costumes but not sure what to do with them. Still too young to trick or treat. Are there any activities you all know of that we could dress up and go to? Thanks in advance.

Carolina Beach football bar

From CLT, camp at CB SP twice a year. We’re here this weekend and looking for a place to watch football. My team (Mizzou) is not super common out here so I need a place with a few TVs at least. I love the feel of Island Bev and Good Hops but they don’t have the TVs. Don’t really want a restaurant because I want to hang around for a while without taking up a servers table.

Any recommendations? Thank you!

The Making of Blue Velvet Was Even Weirder Than You Think

From The Assembly:

Lynch made use of Wilmington’s quaint and charming scenery—it’s still easy to recognize the Cape Fear River and Water Street in the first establishing shot. But the film peered deeper. As in many cities during the 1980s, Wilmington’s downtown was in decline, with tourist restaurants and picturesque diners sitting uneasily down the street from boarded-up storefronts and seedy dive bars, and crew members told me the tableau felt perfect for the story Lynch wanted to tell.

“The whole city had this sense of a dark side and a light side,” said Eddie Bowen, a location manager on the film.

...

“You scratch any surface in Wilmington,” said Jeff Goodwin, the film’s makeup director, “and you’re gonna find something dark underneath that. That’s been true in Wilmington all the way back to the pirates.”

Tomorrow, rain or shine, is NKD: VOTE EARLY! If you or anyone you know has questions about early voting, about the amendments or candidates on the ballot; if you're hoping to convince a non-voting friend that now's the time to use their voice, or you want to march downtown with hundreds (historically thousands) of friends, join the No Kings Coalition at 10a at 1898 Memorial Park. See you there!

New Hanover is #3 in NC on the spay/neuter petition. Can the Cape Fear catch Wake?

Post image
9 Upvotes

A friendly challenge from Raleigh. NC Pet Project's petition asks the General Assembly for a dedicated, larger state fund for low-cost spay/neuter, and every signature counts toward your county on a statewide leaderboard.

Right now:

  1. Wake: 764
  2. Craven: 450
  3. New Hanover: 404
  4. Brunswick: 210

New Hanover is also #5 in the state per 10,000 residents, so it's not just a numbers game. New Hanover and Brunswick together are already at 614. Wilmington alone could close the gap with Wake this week.

It matters down here too. Brunswick County shelters took in 4,492 dogs and cats in 2025 and euthanized 23.4% of them, according to the state's shelter report. The low-cost options already exist: Cape Fear Spay Neuter Clinic in Wilmington, Fix a Friend Clinic, Brunswick County Animal Services' income-based vouchers, and Paws-Ability, which helps low-income owners cover the cost. They just need more funding behind them.

Sign for your county, about 30 seconds:

Each page also lists low-cost spay/neuter near you, with prices.

Full disclosure: I run NC Pet Project (and volunteer at the Wake County Animal Center, so yes, I'm biased about who should win). Happy to answer questions.

Reviewing Apartment Complexes

Before everyone moans and groans... I've reviewed current pricing to narrow down complexes to tour, I will be scheduling tours, I've searched through this thread as well as joined a FB group where I've searched as well, I've been looking at reviews, I've been using Google Maps to see closeness to things.

I've love any feedback regarding the following complexes I'm planning on touring. I'm 32F with a cat. I work from home, and will already have employment.

Any and all feedback would be appreciated, also if theres anything I should look out for specifically for any complex when touring. If theres anywhere I should add to the list, I'd love recommendations!

Thank you so much!

  1. Cape Harbor
  2. The Willow
  3. Abbott Run
  4. Reserve at Forest Hills / Annexe
  5. New Providence Park
  6. Briarcliff Villas

Any Strong Opinions on voting on the Upcoming Constitution Amendments?

  1. Constitutional amendment to require all voters, not just those presenting to vote in person, to present photo identification before voting.

  2. Constitutional amendment to keep the State income tax rate from being raised higher than three and one-half percent (3.5%).

  3. Constitutional amendment requiring limits on property tax increases by local governments.
