General Discussion Peak gameplay

Don’t get me wrong.
Love the game. Day 1 player and I buy every month the monthly pass and the battle pass plus some top up when they reset the double bonus

But i swear this has to be the worst update I have ever played so far.

Qingxiao is beautiful but holy shit the personality and the story are so boring and predictable I can’t count how many times I almost felt asleep while playing. Took me 2 whole week to actually find the will to play the main quest.

I’ve always read every single line of main quest story but this is the first time I literally skipped the main quest without even reading the summaries

And lest talk about the gameplay. Animation are GREAT but at the same time so boring it’s even funny how you just need to keep pressing the left click and the character literally play itself.
I hope 3.7 is better but at this point I just hope for an hard reset with 4.0

What about you guys? Did you like this update?

Which just proves that in WuWa’s case, Holding or button mashing are literally two sides of the same coin. If she didn’t have the ability to hold, we wouldn’t even be having this dialogue.

You would’ve thought this game had PGR gameplay before Mengzhou the way folks are carrying on

17

u/zukos_honor Sep 15 '26

The combat being more interactive was moving in the right direction as recently as Luke, Hiyuki, and Sigrika, idk why they changed design philosophy with all the mengzhou characters

27

u/TheSeventhCoIumn Sep 15 '26

Holding on qingxiao just makes it easier cus she needs to heavy attack at 2 points in her rotation when her forte is full so just holding automatically does that as well similar to mornye

3

u/The_Night_Haunter-8 Sep 16 '26

Same with Lucilla as well, easier to just hold ATK during her combo due to the Heavy attacks

4

u/Material_Positive_17 Sep 15 '26

Jingran is exactly the same

5

u/Organic_Lion_4703 Sep 15 '26

In Jingran's case if you do that, your rotation becomes way longer than what it should be.

Apparently clicking more than 1 button is too difficult for a lot of players. Probably because they're playing with one hand only.

12

u/Material_Positive_17 Sep 15 '26

That is the target audience for most of these games

3

u/Diff_sion Sep 16 '26

It's kind of mean but I believe that, if it wasn't for the revenue, the mobile audience is holding the game back severely.

And god forbid you even show even the slightest hint that you play and enjoy a Hoyo game as well as Wuwa. The ultimate sin.

(To clarify, I specifically have thousands of hours in G*nshin Imp*ct, but only so that I can compare it with Wuwa and ensure that I am criticizing all of the shortcomings with the most information possible. I definitely don't enjoy playing G*nshin. I've played it for years, knowing that, one day, Kuro would release Wuwa and I would be able to glaze it appropriately and with all of the information available to me.) Don't kill me.

Hiyuki my beloved with her peak gameplay

34

u/PolarisVega Sep 15 '26

Hiyuki being able to freeze most anything for a little bit of time is both glorious and op.

8

u/DazzlingCockTip Sep 16 '26

Wait she can? Doesn't that mean she's like Miyabi (ZZZ) before Anti-Freeze bosses? Now I'm considering pulling for her...

8

u/PolarisVega Sep 16 '26

Yep! So even on most bosses she can freeze them for a little bit, it's pretty nuts.

re: gameplay... yeah jingran is unfortunately the same — just hold the button, occasionally spam skills to build up forte qi, use ult, back to holding one button.

technically speaking you can just keep clicking the button instead. but i really do hope kuro goes back to actual combos like luuk's, sigrika's, phrolova's, & hiyuki's gameplays.

62

u/Grodatore Sep 15 '26

> occasionally spam skills, build up forte qu, use ult
The for the actual Jingran rotation you shouldn’t hold basic: you ult immediately then heavy then you use skills to combo into plunging attack + heavys to switch forms, you perform a couple basic attacks just for the fourth heavy. If you just hold basic you lose dps

7

u/hehepout Sep 15 '26

Don't tell the haters the truth

7

u/dew-fall Sep 15 '26

ooooooh i see i see!! yeah i can do the combo after the ult, its just. building up the ult every rotation takes a teeny tiny bit of time bc my jingran is still a wip.

4

u/T8-TR I am but a humble Gyaru Enjoyer Sep 15 '26

Besides not needing another Tune Shifting unit and another Fusion MDPS, this was definitely ANOTHER reason for me to skip the both of them.

I know the difference between spamming M1 and holding M1 isn't that big, since neither exactly have a high skill floor or anything, but something about holding just /feels/ worse.

2

u/Leftykopf Sep 15 '26

Jingran doesnt do that though only Qx does

3

u/T8-TR I am but a humble Gyaru Enjoyer Sep 15 '26

When I previewed him, it definitely felt like I was just holding heavy half the time.

But moreover, I really don't need another Fusion MDPS.

4

u/Leftykopf Sep 15 '26

Thats mostly cause he can do it not because its optimal, you can spam basic attacks with all units doesnt mean thats good

8

u/N_Raged93 Sep 15 '26

At least Jingran's attacks have some impact to them.
Because of Qingxiao's light, elegant, and whispy combat style, I don't feel connected to when her attacks land.

8

u/The_Night_Haunter-8 Sep 16 '26

Can’t say you don’t feel it when that giant sword stabs up from the ground and then a even bigger blade comes down with her ultimate and she does it effortlessly, as it should exactly be with Xingxiao. She’s a 200+ year old master, so her swordplay should reflect that.

2

u/The_Night_Haunter-8 Sep 16 '26

I think of it this way for Qingxiao, she’s a 200+ year old master, so her swordplay should be effortless. Plus it’s not like her animations aren’t peak as hell.

Being on mobile is whats holding the action gacha games back. Combat must be super simple because controls on phones are very restricted.

36

u/ZerosLegacy21 Sep 15 '26

They've gotten by for two years just fine with previous kit designs. Given this is an action game where combat is typically a big drawing factor, this is a recent and deliberate shift away from a baseline level of execution/expression that may have pulled existing players to the game in the first place. No reason to just accept it, be critical if you don't like it.

2

u/Junior-Concept3692 Sep 16 '26

I honestly think you are right on that, but I don't think you need to have very complex kits on every character, bc after all it is action game and while complexity can be fun it can be as well tiring. that's why you should include in the game both mindless type kits for people to just turn of their brain to and complex kit designs for people who enjoys them. Making simple kits isn't bad for a game, making only simple kits is bad.

3

u/ZerosLegacy21 Sep 16 '26 edited Sep 16 '26

The complexity of the kit isn't the issue by itself, it's that in combination with characters starting to play the game for you. Camellya has about the same input complexity as these new units. You hold one button for most her rotation and occasionally press one of the others when it glows. However Camellya doesn't go into enhanced state by continuing to hold attack, she doesn't freeze time during the bulk of her damage, she isn't flying around with every attack and still needs to manually dodge. You still have to engage with the game's core mechanics.

We already had a middle-ground in one form, as when it came to the core gameplay (timing, positioning, dodging, parrying,) characters usually broke one rule at a time: Jiyan/Camellya barely need to time parries, Jinshi/Brant are naturally more evasive. Pheobe/Carlotta/Carte basically can't whiff.

Another form of middle-ground would be Galbrena. She has a uniquely high execution ceiling involving her ability to dash cancel everything. Yet her execution floor (spam NA, E, Q , spam NA) still performs close to 90% of her max damage potential.

Why should the game I liked for what it was become less engaging because of somebody who doesn't actually want to play a game? If someone wants to hold one button and have the game play itself and watch cutscenes for half their rotation, I'd question why they decided to play an action game instead of a different genre or watching a movie. There was already variance in complexity, but Kuro is starting to throw out the need for any basic level of interaction.

2

u/Junior-Concept3692 Sep 16 '26

Yes I fully agree, BUT it's not the game that changed it's just particular character kit. The game itself doesn't have any problem regarding the variance of complexity just like you said it's you as a player choosing which character you are playing, the only problem I would have regarding that is the effort to reward ratio in endgame mode such as endstate matrix. It would also be the problem if wuwa will go into that direction fully which would just suck. Just for clarification I skipped qingxiao so I also don't know how bad is it.

Also sorry for any mistakes or problem with understanding what I mean eng is not my native language.

2

u/ZerosLegacy21 Sep 17 '26

It's fine I just tend to thoroughly explain myself in these spaces since what I say is not always interpreted correctly, I agree it is an individual character issue. It's just that I've noticed it steadily trending this way on certain characters since Augusta and Iuno, even though I like those characters.

I don't think every new character will suffer from this. But since powercreep is basically inevitable it these games, we'll be pushed to get newer units at some point or get left behind in power. It may continue to be a worsening issue with new characters until Kuro is convinced designing kits this way this is not the way to go. I'd say voice your dissatisfactions now before we run out of choices, cause could very well be the future of the game if we don't even fight it.

WWM is on mobile and isn't limited in any way - you just get stomped in pvp lol.

But for PvE mobile controls are more than enough and Wuwa isn't an exception, so this is just lazy

u/Jhinormous Sep 15 '26

I really hope Wuwa doesn't continue this path.

97

u/Me4TACyTeHePa Lupa's ass enjoyer Sep 15 '26

At first it was Yangyang: Xuanling with simple gameplay, then it was Qingxiao, now it is Jingran.

I don't play Wuwa for just "Press X to win" gameplay.

49

u/bb3bb Sep 15 '26

Yangyang's gameplay is really quite good. Two stances and two basic attack combo sets, they can be switched between at any point after BA1,2,3 etc to the other stance which changes the animation and to make it better switching stance mid combo counts as a dodge so you can skilfully avoid enemy attacks while keeping your combo going. Plus two different charged basics/heavies which is nice. Personally after hiyuki I find her the most fun to use.

29

u/kartoffel-knight Sep 15 '26

the complaint is that most of her combo is holding down one button

5

u/GanacheLast9484 Sep 16 '26

Quickswapping with YY:XL has been the most entertaining for me. Works really well with Chisa.

3

u/kugisaki-kagayama Sep 16 '26

If you want more engaging gameplay on her you LITERALLY can get that by quickswapping. She's well designed.

14

u/Acceptable_Cat_4736 Sep 15 '26

I don't think she is, on the paper this sounds super cool, but in reality the game is about team rotation, so if you wanna get optimal damages in 30s or less ( 1 team rotation ), she is really boring to play. But if you like soloing, playing her in holograms, dodging and stuff, surely it is probably fun, but this is one game mode, and the least fun one to me in Wuwa, because the game isn't greatly build for hit/dodge gameplay like a Souls.

4

u/The_Night_Haunter-8 Sep 16 '26

Hiyuki is by far the most fun to play solo against holograms, you aren’t just gonna spam her rotation

2

u/Acceptable_Cat_4736 Sep 16 '26

Hiyuki yup, not YangYang

4

u/bb3bb Sep 15 '26

Fair point, but once you can clear end game comfortably you realise it isn't that fun anyway, it's just doing mindless rotations - regardless of how many or few button inputs there are. ult, skill, hold basic, skill skill, etc. Ciaconna is interesting because she has a huge skip that requires timing and awareness but otherwise most characters are pretty mindless if you are purely aiming for max DPS.

That's an issue with the overall game design tbh, and kuro are trying to streamline it more by making these one button characters rather than actually change end game content.

6

u/Acceptable_Cat_4736 Sep 15 '26

Depends on the teams but I see what you mean, since Hiyuki, teams started to be more "rigid" in their playing style, with less options for cancels or swaps, not saying Aemeath or Luuk was that great too tbh...Imo 2.0 characters are far better when it comes to kits, Hiyuki literally saved that whole 3.X haha.

2

u/kuromat Sep 15 '26

Since hiyuki or after hiyuki? Cause hiyuki is one of the most QS heavy character in the game rn if played in lynae+china team

33

u/RikiPoncho Sep 15 '26

every character in mengzhou is like this

50

u/Ok_Entrepreneur_7306 Sep 15 '26

I feel like most 1.x characters had pretty basic kits but they had lots of possible combos (Changli especially was so fun to mess around with)

3

u/N_Raged93 Sep 15 '26

I don't mind yapyap's gameplay at all. It has some variety to it and it's not too different from Aemeath. I love the force from her two different heavy attacks and when her Ult lands it's quite satisfying.

5

u/SignificantDisplay53 Sep 15 '26

Wondering if they made these characters that way for the people who aren't the best at combat, but love the story? Like, they gave people a few "hold this button to skip this fight" characters. I'm really only considering this option because you can skip through the story, but not the combat. Kind of makes sense, but also they're ruining the fun of those characters for the people who actually do like combat. It's very strange.

8

u/temporalartifacts Sep 15 '26

I think it's probably an attempt to appeal more to mobile players, since the more twitchy gameplay is more hassling on a touchscreen

69

u/MansaMusaKervill Sep 15 '26

I’ve heard this from a good amount of people. Wuwa has sorta drifted away from having to be focused on bosses, parrying, dodging, heck think of the last time you tried to remember a bosses attack patterns. I guess it’s maybe for mobile players, but one of the driving factors of Wuwa was its combat.

40

u/CRISPRSCIENCE9 Sanhua is the best Sep 15 '26

Current combat feels like watching two people dancing completely differently, out of sync, and one guy dies in in the end.

24

u/Aurbil Sep 15 '26

Memphis were my favourite bosses to fight on launch because of how parry rewarding they were

9

u/HellfirePassion Sep 15 '26

UI: off

Team: Danjin

Hologram: Memphis 6

Oh yeah, it's gaming time.

32

u/Numb_Ron Sep 15 '26

The combat went away from gameplay focus to pure spectacle.

Every character now plays like a Sentinel Resonator, they are all gods flying/teleporting around doing crazy attacks, effects everywhere on screen, you can barely see what the enemies are doing.

They focus on making the gameplay LOOK crazy and over the top without caring if it actually FEELS good to fight.

20

u/Caminn Sep 15 '26

The combat went away from gameplay focus to pure spectacle.

That's what happened to PGR and it happened due to time-stop. Guess what people were saying when we got our first time-stop in Wuwa? That this day would come, and here it is.

7

u/FMProductions Sep 15 '26

I was doing Tower of Adversity the other day and Scar is so aggressive, it feels like you have to interact with him to some degree (I guess depending on the team you play). I also liked that design approach in earlier characters, less flashy but the feeling of control and responsiveness was great. With all the visual effects that are going on with newer characters and some bosses it can be difficult to read actions properly, when to parry or dodge.

12

u/Brief_Reputation_327 Sep 15 '26

Now that you mention it that's fair. I miss the satisfaction of repeated parries like it had a weight to it even if it was in my head. This whole patch has been kind of "going through the motions just because" for me

Honestly what does reddit even want atp, if something is too easy reddit complains if its too hard they complain, if character is difficult where you need to qs like zani they say the character is shit if she is easier to play like Jingran/QX they complain

When character's from older patches were not there it was "u see them once a patch and never again" now that they bring them back "story is bad"

Qinqxiao wasn't my most wanted but after trying her it went frm "she might be cool " to "EASY skip"

48

u/Alpha_Inception Sep 15 '26 edited Sep 15 '26

I've seen this before with PGR and I don't like where this is going. Basically the same thing happened in PGR where they had great characters with great toolsets and a bunch of different combo routes up until Alpha Crimson Weave which is about 2-3 years in and then it was all downhill from there.

Every subsequent character had to have a movie for an ult if not multiple with timestop for each one, more flashy sure but therefore less combo routes and and less different movesets within each character.

Basically I've seen this happen before and can't help but feel they're going down the same path.

Edit: should've stated PGR (Punishing Gray Raven) is the other gacha game made by kuro

12

u/Mnemosyne666 Sep 15 '26

Funny you say that, I’ve been thinking lately that it’s starting to feel more and more like PGR. I love PGR and I still play it but there’s a reason WuWa became my main instead, so I really hope they stop this…

7

u/Kyaleu Sep 15 '26

Are they still continuing that route in PGR? If so then honestly I don’t see myself continuing my journey with WUWA if that’s the case.

6

u/Alpha_Inception Sep 15 '26

They r but with very few and far between outliers like the 2 DMC collab units (Dante and Virgil). I'm not exactly sure they're doing that with wuwa aswell but from my experience I'm not ruling it out

5

u/Kyaleu Sep 15 '26

Ah hell no man. Honestly I’m going to wait and see how Hsin and the patch after go with characters and their combat. If this trend continues im out and done with this game. It doesn’t help that being F2P is hard with a terrible 50/50 and constant premium teams beings released

I'm glad people are waking up to how much wuwa's combat has regressed. It has been spectacle over substance and mechanical skill since like Septimont. I am convinced Whimpering Wastes is the core culprit

34

u/IchirouTakashima Sep 15 '26

People were offended when players pointed out that Qingxiao is just a hold left click, it's the truth they don't accept. Then they try to claim they are hardcore players by making the most complicated BS to play her.

It's like saying, I'd rather walk than ride a car to get to my destination. Because I'm hardcore.

7

u/Doblast Sep 15 '26

Why they actually make so complicated skill descriptions just to spam 2 buttons or hold it or both?? I don't get it

5

u/Just-Carob2929 Sep 15 '26

Mengzhou gameplay make me think they're designed to welcome new players after cyberpunk collab popularity & didnt want to scare them early with Zani level gameplay. I hope the trend doesnt continue & Kuro doesnt hand holding them too long & start introduce them what make Wuthering Waves gameplay peak.

17

u/WickedSynth Sep 15 '26

Yeah I'm really starting to hate the direction wuwa is going I'm not gonna lie. It's been feeling stale and unfun for a small while now and as someone who basically has a team for every element I'm kinda wondering "what now?"?

23

u/atsolight Sep 15 '26

This and using specific restrictions/wording in kits to nerf quick swap has been disappointing.

Skill expression is one of the main reasons I stuck with this game, I don’t like that it has shifted away from that.

4

u/Debates7 Sep 15 '26

i find the restrictive kits much worse personally, like at least Qingxio albeit limited has some quickswap with Denia (Moryne cant be quickswapped outside of 1st rotation unfortuntely), this way casuals can play with one hand and there is some resembalance of skill expression with quickswap. But next patch…. yea i dont think anyone who enjoys quickswap will be happy lets just say that

14

u/Critical_Energy777 Sep 15 '26 edited Sep 16 '26

I read/watch every piece of lore, Qingxiao quest was the most boring quest I’ve ever seen in wuwa …

I skipped her after seeing videos of pple holding 1 button to do a full rotation … I’m not paying for this I’m good…

Since 3.5 we are experiencing the most tragic downfall gameplay and lore wise come on … what are we doing here !

5

u/InsideSoup Sep 16 '26

I don't mind that you can do this sort of thing it makes boss farming and doing chores much easier however there still should be skill expression beyond this. Chisa and Hiyuki are good examples of how a character can be both casual friendly and still have skill expression.

I've never liked how often things in WuWa is designed around people who don't want to play the game and the people who do enjoy the game have to put up with it.

I could write a whole paper, but my quick take is that I find the recent characters' gameplay simplicity, built-in evasiveness, and overly cinematic kits very disappointing and trending toward being no better than the games I dropped in favor of WuWa.

Mengzhou story? Kinda bland but not surprised. I usually find wuxia inspired themes and storytelling very boring and predictable. Felt like they almost had something with unravelling Liangyu's motives, but they brushed pasts any sort of closing moment with her. A game of this release pacing, I don't expect every story update to be an absolute banger or appeal to me, so I'll only be concerned if this starts a trend.

Yeah its kind of unfortunate and funny. Remember that the main selling point of the combat of this game when it launched was that there is heavy skill expression and you get rewarded if you play with high skill. Today, you get rewarded by holding left click for the latest DPSes. Don't get me wrong, skill expression is still there but multiple DPSes have their playstyles diluted down to press a button and watch a cutscene or just hold left click and they'll do everything

u/LongjumpingYou18650 Sep 15 '26

The reason why I played this game 2 years ago was because the other game became too simple gameplay wise so I wanna play Wuwa alongside it to have some depth. Fast forward today...

Yeah both games basically play the same now lol, my all time favourite team (International) still remains as the most intricate gameplay wise alongside my beloved QS Zani team. Too bad both teams are in a bad spot these days so I rarely use them.

Honestly I don't hate these games being simpler but jesus there's a line before it just becomes glorified cutscenes.

Her kit philosophy confuses me. I understand wanting a simpler character but the lack of meaningful depth after hiyuki boggles my mind.

4

u/The_Night_Haunter-8 Sep 16 '26

Don’t always wanna be holding ATK though for Xingxiao, you can easily miss her enhanced Resonance Skill. But for the most part it’s not bad at all, it’s a nice break from needing to spam ATK with other characters like Chisa, Hiyuki, Phrolova etc

10

u/Ok-Salamander-4682 Sep 16 '26

To be honest I'd have to agree on the story part.. idk, it just feels like they're pushing us to like the character, like sure ik it's important for the story.. but I'm getting tired of only seeing the featured characters in the story patch.. like can we have our blackshore team helping us out? heck I'd love seeing Aalto in the background or shorekeeper giving us comms or something.... heck yangyang was mostly related in the incident against Muyu but she ends up being left behind to defend Xuanyan Fortress...

it's also the same old same old context where a character has a tragic past then we have to understand them.. etc.. etc.. idk but it feels like it's been so long since I saw a character who's just a 5 star and chill without a tragic backstory? Again, story is great and all, but I just wish the dating sim or the get to know the character part was still a choice like in Rinascita, and we get to focus on the main story and plot..

2

u/YeetaIta Sep 17 '26

I feel like this started becoming an issue in 2.4 with Lupa. Carte was there but it felt super isolated considering the stakes. Then we get to 2.6 with the hunt and Lupa is nowhere to be found? Then Chisa being shafted in 3.X, etc etc.

I can excuse the 1.X quests that followed this similar format because it made more sense considering the context, and the roster was generally smaller. 2.0 was amazing because multiple playable characters were involved in the story. But then we never really got that back until the finale where the characters assembling felt forced, same for Lahai-Roi, albeit it was handled a bit better.

The story would feel more engaging and immersive if it wasn't just a rotating cycle of dates with the new playable waifu and we actually worked together with a group that talked to each other and not just Rover.

it's also the same old same old context where a character has a tragic past then we have to understand them.. etc.. etc.. idk but it feels like it's been so long since I saw a character who's just a 5 star and chill without a tragic backstory?

"I can only think of Suisui for recent ones, technically Yangyang as well but she's not a new character, she is but isn't haha. Everyone else though recently has had some trauma yes.. What bugs me is they repeated the character having a conversation of a clone of themselves that is either a manifestation of negativity or some kind of Fractcidus shenanigan for the 3rd time with Qingxiao. In Qingxiao's case it was an "Inner demon" trash talking them but they had just done it with Lucilla and Sigrika too. In Lucila's case at least she mostly handled that well and didn't need Rover's case but in almost these character stories Rover is helping them resolve a trauma when they have just met that person? Qingxiao has centuries to work out her feeling guilty for not being able to save people(the story makes it pretty clear she couldn't get there in time and there was really nothing she could have done) It's just pretty silly in anyone's case that a stranger they just met for a few hours could help them overcome some past trauma.. or that it always comes up.. I'm not one to tell someone I just met about my baggage.. but that's just how it is with the forced writing in Wuwa.

I also feel we just had the "Incredibly powerful woman who doubts herself a lot or is working through feelings of guilt in not doing more to prevent tragedy" with Hyuki already. We went down that road and have been going down that road a ton now in some flavor since at least Septimont. It almost feels like they just recycled some of Hyuki's personality into Qingxiao. I wish one of them had more like Suisui's personality. Suisui seems fun to chill with, while Hyuki and Qingxiao come across as rather stotic and dull and are masking some big insecurities anyway.

I'm not a fan of Mary Sue characters or anyone not having flaws but it's okay to make some characters just unapologetically badass sometimes.... at the very least don't reveal to the main character these insecurities within a few hours of meeting them.. I guess in Rover's case it's meeting them multiple times but they don't remember meeting them so it's still venting to a stranger about your deep worries within a matter of hours of meeting them lol.

Yeah, if they had kept the character stories to companion quests instead of shoehorning them into the msq just to promote them that would definitely be better. I heard not many people did the companion quests but I do think they were mostly pretty well. Carlotta's was a blast, Cantarella's was pretty good too, Zani's was great, just like a mini adventure with Batman cosplay. I don't think there was a companion quest I didn't enjoy but I have certainly not enjoyed some of Wuwa's story as much when it just feels so forced and other characters are dropped at the dime of a hat for the new character. Wuwa has been a little better about that lately at least.. seeing Suisui again in 3.6 was still nice, even if it was over Wuwa Zoom, I liked the scenes with Yangyang too. It's just that I know they can do better writing and I've seen them do better so that's why it gets frustrating when they're spamming the same tropes.

3

Yeah I'm on this topic too I'm not a fan of the hold the mouse and let the game do everything else by itself either

3

u/nethet Sep 16 '26

Story is ok at most. Best part of it is Muyu and how the guy has zero remorse. The fker lost and still said i ain't wrong, they put 2 challenger players in my silver lobby. Qingxiao is a bit underused in the story, need to spend more time with her. Her kit is simple but i prefer that, less button means I don't have to think about anything. I like that

3

u/EternalZack Sep 16 '26

Interesting to see, that I'm not the only one to see this. Idk, after lahai-roi the game just became boring, it takes me several days to finish msq.

3

u/Hefty_Push_1438 Sep 16 '26

Lmao me and my friend have a running joke about WuWa being “a baby game for babies”. Jiyan was the first 5 star in the game and his gameplay was also just hold left click

This* *update bored me :P I loved Jingran but he barely appeared, I thought Muyu’s death was rushed, I HATED the sword flight “mechanic” if you can even call it that and this patch has been soooo dry for asterites

I think the story was good, just told in a different way compared to 3.0-3.3 storytelling. Requires more attention to see through it. Also too early to judge 3.5-3.7 arc just yet imo.

gameplay criticism

story criticism

i do agree, i had some shi on in the background just to get through it, i cant stand skipping and will at least skim. qingxiao’s backstory was pretty okay, muyu had the potential to be an interesting antagonist, but fell flat, and the overall presentation of the story felt like a slog. i enjoyed what little presence jingran had, just wish there was more. he feels like an interesting but incomplete picture.

But yea gameplay wise, the recent few dps releases were quite boring

2

u/Hefty_Fan_6060 Sep 16 '26

I really want the gameplay to be a little complex. I love challenges. I wish they would stop catering to the casual players hehe

2

u/YeetaIta Sep 17 '26

Agree, this has felt like the driest update. I was really excited for Qingxiao when we saw her in 3.5's story and I LOVE her EN va but we get yet again another companion quest disguised as a main quest, and Qingxiao herself turned out be to quite boring as a character.

She just didn't have anything interesting about her, and her interactions with Rover were basically the same five lines over and over. Her 'arc' at the end came out of nowhere, and the structure of which has been recycled a couple times now (ie: Carlotta). I kind of liked what she had with Jadie's character (can't remember her actual name), but that's it.

I'm not a 'husbando' player but I have to agree that Jingran also got shafted. WuWa's main story mostly focuses on the new characters in each update, but they didn't even do that here. Qingxiao got the normal treatment, while most of Jingran's screentime was at the end. Then we got a not even ten minute afterstory, where he's in it for only half of that runtime.

So not only are stories focusing way too much on the new character and no one else, they didn't even hold to that standard this update.

I really don't like how short Xuanfang was. Next patch is the last Xuangfang quest, and then we're done. 3 patches was not enough to get invested in this area, and it kind of sucks that so much of that story was dedicated to a glorified date with Qingxiao. I'm fully expecting next patch to be the same with Hsin, with Suoming potentially being the only other character actually involved.

3.5's story was genuinely really good, despite it largely focusing on Yangyang. But Kuro went right back to their typical writing afterwards.

I also don't like how characters basically play themselves, and all have the same general structure. Basic attack spam until forte bar fills up, heavy attack/skill to enter alternate form, spam basic more, liberation, swap out. Not to mention the amount of cutscene animations during gameplay.

Maybe a hot take, but Xuanfang could have been an email. I really wish Kuro would go back to full year release cycles like with Rinascita. Rinascita was not perfect but I felt way more invested in it because we were there for a full year. Lahai-Roi also had its problems and it being only 6 months long was one of them imo.

2

u/GreatGodBuddy 29d ago

Definitely agree. Also a day one player, and I've skipped yangyang because of this, and im probably skipping qinxiao and jingran because of this as well. Aemeath lost most of her fun to play because there's nothing much to play. I hope they don't do the same shit with hsin, but im not holding any hopes. I'll probs just end up pulling on the rerun banners ig. Still haven't ended up playing the story because i'm dreading the boredom after the first half of 3.x all being good

Yep, I also started in 1.0 and I can't remember a patch worse than 3.6, not even 1.0 was this bad because Kuro had all kinds of limitations they don't have right now.

4

u/Hekkoln Sep 15 '26

This might go down as the worst patch in history. Two of the lamest story characters with the most garbage gameplay ever, all style and no depth.

3

u/Kyohaku98 Sep 15 '26

4 hours of pure A button spamming and walking

6

u/iLegitCookie Sep 15 '26

Honestly, this arc of the story would only really resonate with you if you were interested in xianxia to begin with, and for people that aren't interested, it's not going to suddenly pull you in because it seems to be kind of expected that you understand the basic concepts of xianxia.

Character kit wise, these simplified kits are popular because most players of the game just mash buttons and hope to see their character do insane things on the screen. The overwhelming majority of players are not the ones that actually do rotations, the majority are the people that actively die in story fights and don't ever touch endgame.

Not that you can't critique it, but after seeing the 500th person go through story quests while playing like they've never touched a game in their life, it kind of becomes clear why these characters have become simpler.

7

u/Savings-Internet-180 Sep 16 '26

Xianxia fan here, i said that even as a Jinjiang's xianxia slop standard, this story is mid-bad.
Cultivation in xianxia has a lot of base setting due to the author, in this quest Wuwa just bare touch xianxia culture although they mainly focus on Qingxiao a jianzun with xianxia setting. They did not introduce enough wuwa's xianxia setting, just qingxiao cultivation way, it's not show like what is cultivation overal, what kind of people can cultivate-like normal ppl or special ppl as resonator or is there a specific kind of resonator can cultivate, how different clan cultivate, how their paths of cultivate. Even as a in quest, they just show Qingxiao meditate and fighting and call that cultivate, we can't hope none-xianxia fan to understand and imagine themself with just that little present in story. Qingxiao have a shifu, does she also does sword path with sharpen mind, bc we she qingxiao training buling and buling definitely a talisman/taoist path. The setting is so much unclear even with a xianxia reader. Not to mention the innder demon trope was doing purely in her quest, Qingxiao had the basic setting for good story of a xianren, a sword master with calm attitude sometime consider coldly but warm heart, strong mind and there is ton of novel that did this trope, kurogame still find the worse way to present it. Lastly in the boss fight, they simply just let qingxiao defeat Muyu easily, then Muyu back up plan coming, she just using the "power of people" after see past friend illusion, this is the most common power friendship which how we resolve xuanfang disaster after 2 patch build up. Not gonna lie, even as a filler patch to hook on 3.7, this patch is bad, the only worth detail to care is Sentinel Hsin abnormal state which will be told in 3.7 and 3.5 already let us know there is something wrong with hsin when suisui met her. 3.6 ver simply end villian muyu poorly for a villian well build in 3.5, while gettign qingxiao on screen so much time but show her character and aspects poorly. My girl being larp from a paragon, a xianren figure to waifuslop bc of bad story writing and present

You had to lift your mid finger slightly at 0:03 due to the prolonged left click holding position.

that's way too complex and risk of carpal tunnel, better simplify it so even holding the left click is not needed, just left click once and the whole sequence should unfold.

3

u/Asleep_Alps_397 Sep 16 '26

Same, lore stuffs were interesting. But they focused too much on Qingxiao. Like she's just not interesting, because the writer did not even try to show us, let us have an experience. Instead they just tell. The writer wants us to know who Qingxiao is, but they didn't consider on how to makeus interested to know who she is.

The segue were better written, although very short. Literally, Jingran became more of an interesting character than Qingxiao. I'm not a male character lover nor a fenale character lover either, just that his personality and action are so interesting.

Like just a comparison between Qingxiao in-game past scene against Jingran past via promotion. I feel more for Jingran than Qingxiao.

Like Qingxiao I get it a wanderer, sad. But they didn't even show us what happened to her.

6

u/XWasTheProblem Sep 15 '26

Although I'm actually enjoying the 3.5 onward characters a lot, I do have to agree that the gameplay is becoming repetitive :/ Like it's fine if you have certain units with simple gameplay but like... It's definitely a trend Not trying to flame Kuro cause I still like the game

3

u/TheProky S6R1 Sep 15 '26

I prefer this over the usual. Holding down the mouse button is much simpler

3

u/EirikurG Sep 16 '26

Man it's such a shame what has happened to this game's combat. Compare this to what we started with, a slower and more deliberate combat system where engaging with the enemy was mechanically interesting and not just AoE spamming until it's dead

5

u/adastrajay Sep 15 '26

Might be an unpopular opinion but I don't think every character needs to be complex or need lots to do for gameplay. In this case in particular I think it fits her character as well as a master who for the most part does things effortlessly (at least that's how I see it and enjoy her for that).

7

u/Hekkoln Sep 15 '26

This game is becoming too casual appealing with these new 🧠💀 characters, zero depth between them at all. They’re going to lose a good portion of the player base if they continue in this genshin impact route

8

u/Veshyboy Sep 15 '26

You see that would be a good excuse if it weren't for the fact that Yangyang and Jingran also suffer from the same issue.

5

u/NormalLog6 Sep 15 '26

Bro, most 1.x standard character and 4 stars are better designed than much of the 3.x cast.

Most of them were simple but deep with lots of potential for those who wanted to dive deep unlike the 3.x cast many of whom are either complex (due to their countless restrictions) and shallow or straight up play themselves.

This 'not all characters need to be deep' BS is both a false dichotomy (cause characters can be simple but deep) and ignores how most of the characters we've gotten since 3.x are shallower than a puddle of water in terms of combat depth

u/Kestrel-Red Sep 15 '26

WuWa has really fallen off after Lahai Roi. It's jarring, like they changed the whole trajectory of the story and the game. I didn't skip 3.6, but it was so boring and repetitive I did find myself zoning out and scrolling on my phone. I used to be so excited to play the main quests, to get more pieces of lore, but now I just don't care, not even about 3.7. It's just going to be another waifu quest like the last few. I used to be a regular spender, too, but I'm taking a break at least till 4.0 comes out and I see what the reaction is. Kuro needs to do a lot of work if they hope to rebuild trust in their vision.

5

u/NaturalPurpleEnjoyer Sep 15 '26

"Took me 2 whole week to actually find the will to play the main quest" hit hard. I'm in the same boat, in fact I still didn't do it nor did I do the exploration of the region.

After finishing the part with Yangyang I simply couldn't bring myself to play the game, it's even a wonder how I've kept up with dailies.

I don't want to pull new characters beside Suoming and the gameplay is getting worse every release. I try the new stuff and it's all the same thing, I felt like I was having fun pressing buttons before 3.0, now I really wonder why I keep playing. It's all flash and no substance.

All I can say is that they neutered the gameplay elements by streamlining the actions. It was the main appeal to me, even before the story. It's not even burnout as I look forward to every update in hopes it goes back to being active gameplay.

Kuro, I beg you to stop using hyperconditional restrictions on everything and to stop dumbing down the game.

3

u/CautiousSuccess9277 Sep 15 '26

Hopefully they don't waste 4.x New Federation with this kind of gameplay...

I love Mengzhou's character design but the gameplay is just not it, Hsin and Suoming look like more of the same, unfortunate. HSR is right there for the no brain casuals, why does everything have to be dumbed down?

This patch made it really easy for me to save pulls. Easily the worst designed characters gameplay wise I've ever played in an action gacha. Probably in an action videogame. Character A, number big, hold click. Character B, number bigger, hold click. 1 billion more hp for TOA. Day 1 player, getting more and more tired of kuro's bullshit. Doesn't help that current story arc is a snooze fest.

u/NCF-Mercy Sep 15 '26

Idk i personally dont mind.

Might get downvoted but Wuwa was never a complex game to begin with. With mby few exeptions majority of characters you just spamm the attack button and few times resonance skill button.

Theres just a tiny portion of players who are into quickswap and most just do the standard 123 rotation wich is basically just that.

So whats the difference between holding a button or just spamming it?

Im more annoyed about the fact that they are punishing people for trying to play quickswap.

Without quickswap you re „forced“ to play the „boring“ way wich sucks for people who dont want that.

With qs everyone gets to be happy.

3

u/Prize_Cicada1980 Sep 15 '26

This. "Holding down the button" isn't an issue especially since this video has literally no relations to how you actually play QX since in this story segment she's in perma-forte mode.

Outside of her forte she still has the same """depth""" any other character does, you need to do ground skill BA1, air skill BA23 etc... to charge up her forte.

Wuwa's depth always was from the ability to QS and if players don't push back on it because "Erm actchually I dislike qs" (they don't, they just dislike that they can't do the point-maxing rotations), we'll be left with 123 hyper teams only which are, to be blunt, boring as shit.

It was. But the Chinese playerbase is full of lonely snowflakes, so they turned the game from a post-apocalyptic sci-fi action thriller into a harem wife-collecting game. But hey, it's mostly their money running and keeping alive the game so i can't really complain that much.

I am one of the players who can't quickswap but damn, i own hiyuki and even if i do 123 rotation is much more challenging than just holding a button. There is much more interaction, an order of attack and skill you have to do right or risking to fuck up the rotation and the timing. That's actually gameplay, not holding a button.

3

u/NCF-Mercy Sep 15 '26

I mean like i said there are few exeptions and hiyuki is probably the prime example for that aswell.

But then look at aemath, iuno, jhinshi, jiyan, carlotta, lucy etc…

Majority is just spamm attack and throw in resonance skill here and there and call it a day.
