❓️Question / Advice Is this worth the money ? (Base rog Xbox ally)
I really want to get the base model Rog Xbox ally and I have watched videos on it seems like it can run everything in good fps while some games need to lower settings to achieve good frame rates. I'm in Canada and it's like 750 ish brand new. I had my heart on it but I keep seeing people saying they regret it or just get this or that. people WHO OWN IT what has been your experience ? are you happy with it yes or no and why ? thank you.

Ignore that schizo talking about chips. This is a fine gaming device that has provided me many hours of joy and is a part of my nightly winding down routine. It’s a bit much to setup but once you update everything and learn the interface, it’s truly a fantastic handheld with unique features that I appreciate. And don’t listen to folks comparing this to steam deck… this device runs BO7 for goodness sake
5
u/elaborateBlackjack Apr 12 '26
I would completely disagree.
I wouldn't say everyone needs the highest tier device, but ignoring the fact that you're getting a 4 year old chip and 3 gen older tech is not anything to scoff at.. If you're ok with that and the performance you're getting with the so called "Z2A" (AKA the steam deck APU from 2022),then that's ok.
Battery life, RAM capacity and APU are like the only 3 things to look for on a handheld, ignoring one is not making your due diligence on an informed purchase
4
u/psportalfan Apr 12 '26
Ah yes, I remember every child looking up the chip architecture for the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP, two of the highest selling consoles of all time, as surely this was the most important aspect of the device and not at all the user experience, ergonomics or games
3
u/Bathroom-Salt Apr 13 '26
Dude, that’s not the point. Nobody is saying the non-X is a “bad” device. The egregious part is calling a Zen2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU the “Z2A”. It’s literally the equivalent of Apple releasing an M5A and when you look a little deeper it’s actually an M1. It’s blatant misleading marketing, dressing up a core architecture from 2019 and selling it as a “current gen” APU. Targeted at tricking an uninformed buyer into thinking they’re getting a “new” product. Imagine if Apple called the A18 in the Neo an M5 Neo when its only relation to the rest of the M5 family is its name. That’s the problem.
1
u/Taiktheb8 Apr 13 '26
Those were basically the two newest options, and the PSP was always given credit for having better hardware and graphics than the DS. Were 8 year old kids comparing chips? No probably not then or now, but your point is dumb and argument is wrong lol
1
u/Omlet_OW Apr 14 '26
It’s not the era of the DS or PSP now. Back then performance stats were not so important and neither was being competitive on those but with how gaming has developed and how modern games are more demanding, he’s completely right. Battery life is huge if you want AAA games or higher frame rate as it draws more power for a better experience. Then you look at graphics, you want something that can push a stable, enjoyable framerate at a good resolution. And RAM is crazy important. It’s the difference between a fast and a slow handheld like it would be for a normal PC. SSD size is important with how large games have gotten. I have 11 games downloaded on my Xbox ally X and most of them are between 70-100GB which is crazy. Even a game like marvel rivals is 99GB. So the numbers really are important these days otherwise you won’t get the performance you expect
-1
u/elaborateBlackjack Apr 12 '26
Sure! Let's compare completely separate products for your "gotcha" comment.
A console is made so you get a game and it works, simple. You don't check framerates, settings , prices on other stores, nothing. You get what settings they give you and you're happy with it.
This is a portable PC, it's not a console, not all games are gonna work, to some people one set of settings is fine, to other is completely unacceptable. I for one can't stand 30fps,some are happy with it, that's why PC is simply different you HAVE to make choices on how you want to play. So no I don't know what my PSP had because when I had one I just knew games worked, now I know that my PC has certain specs and some games won't work on it because that's the nature of THIS gaming platform.
So, when you want to talk about something that actually makes sense, formulate your comment appropriately for the context of the device we're talking about, you could comment, otherwise, try to research what this device actually is.
0
u/psportalfan Apr 12 '26
Brother the psp had games that ran at 15 fps and then also 60 fps, so yes it is the same here. And this IS a console experience because the proprietary Xbox FSE and Xbox store that tells you which games run as soon as you turn it on. You know if you actually owned a device you would know this
-1
u/elaborateBlackjack Apr 13 '26
FSE can be enabled on ANY windows 11 pc with minor tweaks and soon it'll be available as an option to all windows 11 installs like it is on the Xbox Ally's image, so that's nothing special, specially with how other launchers will be able to override launching on FSE mode (as how AnyFSE has done on the latest update, I can just open Steam instead of The xbox app) . Even when the Xbox Ally released you could enable FSE on the older ROG Ally's. And the Xbox store isn't exclusive to the Xbox Ally's and it's definitely not the leading platform to purchase PC Games.
And yes, some games run badly on consoles but usually you're guaranteed at least 30fps on most cases because that's what's considered the lowest acceptable fps by most gamers. By your comment you're ignoring the other thousands of games NOT on the xbox store

Is steam deck better than Xbox rog ally? What kind of steam deck? (One giù offered me a steam deck LCD for my xbox rog ally). Sorry for the question here
1
u/Regression2TheMean Apr 14 '26
Imo, the base Xbox Ally is better than the Steam Deck IF you are already deep into the Xbox/Game Pass environment.
If you are really only using Steam and don’t have an Xbox, I’d say the Steam Deck OLED is the best choice
1
u/Big-Roll7094 May 11 '26
No it is not, the base ally can simply run so many games that the steam deck cannot, remember that the steamdeck only has 20k verified games out of 100k games on steam but the ally can play virtually any game on windows and let’s not forget that it has a vrr screen, oled may be good but even when steam deck has 45 fps while ally has 40 the ally is still gonna feel smoother because of that vrr and if you’re really that into steamos then just install bazzite on it (i apologise for my bad English grammar)
1
u/Steven_7u7 Apr 12 '26
Personally don’t see the issue with comparing devices. Each one of them has their pros and cons, and some people might prefer one’s pros over the other ones, specially when it’s not that hard to find a better PC handheld than the Xbox Ally under $500 in the second-hand market in the US and it might be the same case too for Canada :v
1
u/WarPuzzleheaded9262 Apr 13 '26
It went back up even on amazon 😞 they are back at the $600 dollar mark
1
u/Steven_7u7 Apr 13 '26
Damn, now it will be much easier to find a used ROG Ally X under the Xbox Ally’s price XD

No matter what a handheld PC is a depreciating asset …… you’re throwing your money in fire REGARDLESS the money you decide to buy a handheld PC so tbh your point is a bit invalid. You’re jus refusing to use your own brain and parroting what you hear and see from reviewers online. This device is perfectly fine
-2
u/Sad_Cow_5838 Apr 12 '26
When you pay for it it has NOT depreciated ! LOL your logic is flaud.
1
u/Electronic_Night333 Apr 13 '26
The moment you take it out of the box it’s depreciated wtf are you saying ? 😆😆😆
2
u/rxman1975 Apr 12 '26
Seriously you don’t even own one how would you know anything about it besides repeating stuff you want to agree with on YouTube. I own one and it’s amazing it’s a great 720p gaming pc. Maybe try playing one before you judge. Plus the Z1 extreme are aren’t getting anymore updated ROG has said that them selves
11
u/Interesting-Tart-SP Apr 12 '26 edited Apr 12 '26
Depending on games bro.
I got the white ally to play
Gta5 online and GTA 5 and it does it good
At 720p with 120hz I have zero issues not to mention the vabrtions on the controller feels like above PS4 I don't own any Xbox controller idk how Xbox does things but I love feeling the engine driving in GTA 5 not like the ps portal but it's enjoyable.
I have played call of duty back ops 3 and 2 and 1 with one I had to do things to get it to support controller.
If games you want to play don't have controller support you just have to remap them.
Also call of duty infinite warfare zombies in space land I think that's like the most new game that is AAA form my games.
I have yet to try mafia 2 or others cuz I will say 512GB isn't a lot of space at all bro i wish they had the white one come with 1TB.
I USE THE micro SD card to move games.
I do play PS2 emu from emu deck and I played scarface midnight club all in 480p normal PS2 resultion full screen and in 60hz. No issuess.
I have like 100gb in just PS2 games on it.
I have no regrets but the first day you get it when I got it man I had to to do all the updates in the world myAsus windows armory you name it.
Out of the box without any update I ran steam and ran gta5 and GTA 4 and they ran like crap. Obviously
So I have to stress out update update update once you get it to where you need.
Me personally I turn off all updates only do game updates once I felt like it running perfectly.
I'll update if I have to for a game sense all my games are old I don't see myself updating.

u/SaulGoodman699 Apr 12 '26
The most demanding thing I would probably play would be cod multi player aside from that Indy games mainly. Some horror games like layers of fear and still wakes the deep. And solid advice thanks bro

I haven't played COD warzone I only played black ops 1-3 and infinite warfare.
I don't think I have space to try this but I'll look into it
1
u/Interesting-Tart-SP Apr 12 '26
The error is saying something about steam.
How is you running this just give me some background information
6
u/Swift_1986 Apr 12 '26
I got 1 and I absolutely love it although I was realistic about my expectations, I knew I wasn’t going to be playing modern AAA titles on ultra settings I have my desktop for that, with this I’m using it more as a tool for my back catalogue of games that I always said I would get round to playing 1 day and have never gotten round to, I have only had it for a month now and so far I have played through, mad max, max payne 3, resident evil 2, and the mass effect trilogy and im currently playing through fallout 4, I have tried arc raiders on it but tbh I wasn’t too impressed with how that run but it was definitely playable but considering I was sitting in the same room as my brother when trying it playing duos and he was on a series s it left playing on the handheld feeling a bit shit, so yeah I love mine but ultimately it depends on what you want to play on it and what your expectations are

loser response, not everyones on reddit all day.

However it's easier to search for already made posts before making a whole ass post yourself...

Why do you have to be on Reddit all day to have a quick search or look back through posts?
-1
u/AvailableSyllabub315 Apr 12 '26
some people like to talk or have discussion instead of using it as a wiki. redditors love to shut down anything similar to social interaction

u/Saiing Apr 12 '26 edited Apr 12 '26
It's not discord. More often than not I'd agree with you but the number of times this question has been asked now is ridiculous.
OP just thinks they're the main character and shouldn't have to make an ounce of effort. I mean, go to google and type the exact title of this post in the search box + reddit and see how many times this question has been debated, often word for word with OP's title.

Yes. As long as you know what you’re buying and what it does well.
1
u/SaulGoodman699 Apr 12 '26
This is why the posts here I'm trying to figure it all out if I think it's worth it. It's almost 800 bucks Canadian that's to much to blindly buy something hoping I like it. Might end up with a switch 2 save myself some money. Alot of people seem to not think the Xbox ally is worth it
1
u/ggonzalez105 Apr 12 '26
Because it’s only “slightly” better than three year old devices, and it’s technically slower than a Z1E, but for $500 brand new (instead of said older devices for $600-$800), it’s not a bad device.
Cloud Gaming, and medium settings for AAA titles and it’ll do the job just fine, with better battery life than the older models.
2
u/Miaw_Kitty Apr 13 '26
Very worth it!
I like playing long RPGs, horror games and small indies on it.
2
u/spar7ian7 Apr 13 '26
It’s aight in my opinion. I liked streaming games directly from my Xbox and would have good results. Downloading games directly to the device wasn’t good imo
2
u/messranger Apr 12 '26
it's worth very little money. definitely not 700! more like 300 so skip it

2
u/Sad_Cow_5838 Apr 12 '26
No.
The Z2 A cpu is bs name brand. Its about same power as the steam deck. Priced right it would maybe be worth it but if you are okay with steam deck level power - get a steam deck oled open box. Better screen and better everything.
The Xbox Ally X tho - i paid for open box and i love it! I also own Legion Go 2 and i prefer xbox ally x!
6
u/Echo_Raptor Apr 12 '26
The SD OLED is only better in the screen. The ergos are better in the XA and you’re not limited to SteamOS. I do use Steam, but having everything on windows including Steam is a better option
1
u/Abject_Race_7937 Apr 14 '26
Only thing that makes the steam deck OLED good is it's display. Ally original clears the deck OLED. It can go to 20W instead of 15W only, higher res and refresh, and in my opinion it feels more comfortable

Platforms, ibdies, and older triple a yes.
Modern triple a and drmenandjng games no.
If the former is you, get it while the price is good. Great ergonomics and battery life.
If the latter is you, get an ally x before the price increases. Already did in canada. Lenovo legion is almost double in price now.
1
u/Olympian-Warrior Apr 12 '26
Well, it's not as good as the ROG Xbox Ally X is, so you'll have to make more sacrifices to visuals to achieve playable frame rates. I would opt for a ROG Ally X because that has the Z1 Extreme, which is actually a better APU than the Z2 A, which is what the base ROG Xbox Ally uses.
I am also in Canada, but even so, I wouldn't recommend this version of the Xbox Ally because it's quite underpowered for its price point.
1
u/No_Bake6681 Apr 12 '26
Do you love the fit of the handles? Can you use streaming services where you plan to use it? I ask because I have a powerful handheld but still opt to use streaming because it keeps the fans quiet (almost no heat) and I can max out 1080p settings
1
u/Foreign-Turn-8086 Apr 12 '26
If you have reasonable expectations about what it can and can’t do, it’s a good device, especially at the price cut.
1
u/CosmicBalloonAnimal Apr 12 '26
It's garbage if you leave all the bloat and unnecessary services running. There is such a low amount of available ram that you'll be stuttering regularly in even some basic indie games.
If you put in the effort to clean it out or just have something like Claude code run system diagnostics and tell you what to remove, it's a decent system.

I just picked one up for $499 USD and I love it. I am mostly using it for PS4 era games though. The only recent game I have tried was Death Stranding 2, which was a little rough. I got it to run a stable 30fps at 720p FSR performance mode with frame gen on...

1
u/k2theizz0 Apr 12 '26
I love mine. Got in December and I finished Doom Dark Ages, High-Fi Rush, Gears Reloaded , SiFu, and I am currently playing Chorvs.
No issues.
1
u/FrostyDied_ Apr 12 '26
I bought it, and I don’t regret it at all. I’ve already finished RE Requiem and The Last of Us Part 1, and now I’m playing Part 2, they run really well. I haven’t tested Death Stranding 2 yet, but it runs too.
The only change I made was upgrading the SSD to a 2TB one, and I removed Windows and installed Bazzite, the system works really well, much more stable. I’m enjoying it a lot. I recommend it.
2
u/charmedpenguin95 Apr 12 '26
DS2 runs, but its rough. I needed frame gen to maintain 30 fps
1
u/FrostyDied_ Apr 12 '26
The quality drops a lot and it creates a lot of artifacts on the screen when I enable frame generation; I can’t run it with it on. About DS2, does the quality at least stay good? And can you interact with everything?
That game has way too much going on for such a small screen, but I still want to try it. What do you think of it?
2
u/charmedpenguin95 Apr 13 '26
It runs. You can play it, but it's rough. You can see ok, but it's low res. There is a good deal of latency, though.

1
u/SnooGoats8382 Apr 12 '26
I love mine. I use it for emulators and modded skyrim. Nothing crazy graphic wise just combat and new locations like bruma and relics of hyrule. I also play some modded stardew on it from time to time as well.
1
u/emmanaranjo Apr 13 '26
have you tried this with switch and ps3 emulations ?

I have not. I could never get any switch emulators to work and didn't know there was a ps3 emulator.

I own the X version and, running games at the right settings the Xbox Rogs are great for on the go gaming.
Legitimately my only complaint is that I wish the X version came with a 8inch oled screen to help the price point feel justified and it would look amazing but thats just my opinion.
The white version, I remember researching before buying the X and im still quite impressed with it when I saw benchmarks between handhelds and the X obviously performed a bit better but the white model does pretty well
1
u/emmanaranjo Apr 13 '26
I need device for emulations can it handle switch and ps3 emulations those will be the most demanding ones ?

1
u/ConfectionNecessary6 Apr 13 '26
You see the praise of the steam deck? It's about the same performance, it's also comfortable.
1
u/lordunc36 Apr 13 '26
Depends on what games you want to play. I’m playing Halo MCC, Rocket League, Super Battle Golf natively and it rocks.. for more demanding games I stream with GeForce now and that rocks too.

Have this one, haven't had any problems playing XBOX remote games to my XBX or XBS and have tested a lot of games locally downloaded to the device.
Crimson Desert, Fallout 4 and Starfield all run fine offline with whatever the standard settings are (haven't changed anything in AC). Old games run amazing downloaded through Steam, Epic and Ubisoft.
Currently playing The Saboteur and Crimson Desert locally, and MLB The Show 26 from my office Xbox on remote. Love this device, no issues.

u/IronTrigger Apr 13 '26
I couldn't afford the X, so I bought this one instead. I had a Steam Deck and I wanted to switch simply because of Windows. There are some games that the SD can't run. I had Windows on an external SSD to dual boot it on the Deck but it's not optimal and crashes a lot. The base Xbox Ally is very similar to the SD in power plus it has Windows to run those games I wanted to play.

1
u/walkamonggiants Apr 13 '26
I don’t believe it is. It’s basically steam deck power so not worth it when you can find a used Ally X for $5-600 and have a more powerful handheld. I’d buy the Xbox Ally used for about $300 but i don’t feel it’s worth above that price point.
1
u/PalaeoRoman Apr 13 '26
Prices are so different. Here in Mexico I bought the white Xbox Ally for $600.
1
1
u/ncriggs Apr 13 '26
I’m loving it. Just takes awhile to figure out what graphic settings work best on each game. It’s a 720 or 960 resolution on most games. Don’t set to 1080. Use the built in AI upscaling for software if available and make sure the hardware upscaling is turned off. Use the hardware upscaling if software isn’t available.
1
u/AJ_Villz Apr 13 '26
Very much enjoyed mine so far, my work requires alot of travel so this has been ideal in my hotel rooms of an evening
I pretty much go through indies on ROG and the AAA's on XSX at home
1
u/Classic-Analyst-8879 Apr 13 '26
Its fine for indie games but if you want to play crimson desert and the like you’ll want the most performance you can get with the X

u/whitestickygoo Apr 13 '26
Try to buy one used or refurbished. I bought one recently for about $400 usd
1
u/thevisoredbro Apr 13 '26
It seems okay and the price is pretty good but if you want a proper console like experience go for a steam os handheld

1
u/tTrentonNJ Apr 13 '26
It’s $100 off at Best Buy right now and Amazon with a deal, and if you can find one open box or used you could get it even cheaper if up for that it can be absolutely worth the money. For $600 I’d say probably not but everyone’s different, I got mine for $150 off by getting it open box and on sale at Best Buy.
1
u/Spikedroses Apr 13 '26
I really like mine, it's lovely but I've noticed it can be kinda laggy sometimes
1
u/Tall-Manufacturer709 Apr 13 '26
Não, investe em um Rog Ally X que vc encontra na msm faixa de preço, e seja feliz Obs: Não estou dizendo Rog Xbox Ally X
1
u/Abject_Race_7937 Apr 14 '26
Id get it on sale. It very much depends on what you play also like if you play some AAA games it won't do too well. From what I played on my ally it can do emulation and run some older games pretty well! I got 30FPS 1080P ultra on fh4, 60FPS 1080P on GTA 5, and a more modern title COD MW3 (2023) 60FPS on low to medium settings
1
u/Alex_Brad Apr 14 '26
I have the base Rog Ally (not the Xbox version) and I LOVE it! It keeps pace with my ps5 easy. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say the Xbox version will be hella rad!

u/Caffe1ne-Dependent Apr 14 '26
I do get some of the negative comments about it for sure. But I got one a couple of weeks ago and as a Dad who works full time this has allowed me snippets of joy doing something I love.
It’s been a bit of an effort getting it all set up and going how I want it. But now I’ve got a bunch of emulators set up and some stuff downloaded from game pass it really is awesome!
1
u/killerdroid69 Apr 14 '26
I bought the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally (the base model) with the money I saved up on my own and because I couldn’t afford to buy the Ally X. I can assure you that it’s great and I am able to smoothly play the AAA games I’ve been wanting to for a long time. It’s an amazing device. You can totally go for it.
1
u/westee0 Apr 14 '26
I bought one back in January and just traded it for a series X for my living room. I already have a decent pc (Ryzen 7 5800x RTX 5070 32gb ram, play in 1440p) so i would always just end going back to my pc. It’s not bad but if you already play on something more powerful, you have to be cool with lowering resolutions for AAA games. Not a bad device, I would just buy an X variant if possible.
EDIT : Certain games require a keyboard and mouse too. Schedule I and Retro Rewind: video store simulator were 2 I ran into that didn’t have controller support. Not really an Ally problem but just something to be aware of :)
1
u/SaulGoodman699 Apr 14 '26
Thanks for the tip I didn't realise some games needed keyboard and mouse and yea I also own a series x and base model ps5 and I'm ok with lowering resolutions
1
u/westee0 Apr 14 '26
In that case you will probably enjoy it. I played mostly every game in 1080p and it seemed pretty good. I played AC Syndicate, Watch Dogs 2, GTAO, Spider-Man 2, and Mafia 3 with no problems. Mods work pretty well too. As someone mentioned, grab an SD to move games back and forth so you don’t gotta install every time. Only reason I switched was to have something to play with my wife in the living room. While you can technically do it with an ally via dock, an Xbox was just better for my situation.
1
u/Regression2TheMean Apr 14 '26
I got the base model and I enjoy it. I will say after using it a few months, if I had the money at the time I definitely would’ve got the XAX instead. All the tinkering you have to do with the base model can be tedious, but I don’t really mind.
Besides most of the time I end up just remoting into my Xbox series X or streaming from the cloud, which would be wasting all the hardware on the XAX.
When it comes to non Xbox games, I have no issues playing Spider-Man remastered which is my favorite game at the moment

I got mine open-box at Best Buy for about $400 and don't regret it one bit. It has run everything I've tried so far. I'm sure I would have paid full price but a deal only made me pull the trigger sooner. Don't pay attention to these ridiculous (and unsolicited) arguments against it regarding chips or marketing tactics. Simply put, it's been great to me and I'd recommend it as long as you stay in the real world and remember it's a handheld gaming PC. My final verdict is if you're like me and can't afford to shell out a grand for the X, this is still a great alternative that doesn't make me feel blatantly aware that it's not the premium model.

Yes it is, i like the legion go s z2go more, and the price its kind of similar (for now) but im just doing a review of the z2a for my youtube channel and you can play everything, even Cyberpunk 2077, on 900p, and low settings plays at 45 fps, and cyberpunk its still a really good looking game at low settings

If that is within your budget, then it's fine. I think you know too, there are better ones.

Threw on cyberpunk the other day and it looked like ass. Switched the game settings to steam deck and it plays like a dream. Love this damn thing. Probably the most fun and laid back gaming I've had in awhile.

Yea for the most part everything I have tried (I ended up getting it) has ran well. I did however try the Blair witch game as I'm a horror fan and haven't played it and it ran like dog shit luckily the in game settings you can adjust to make it playable but for the most part it's a great device !

Honestly I am so curious about this, been debating between getting one on sale or waiting for a Steam Deck restock since the posts I have seen say that both devices are pretty similar regarding performance, but since most of my library is on steam I haven’t pulled the trigger on the Xbox Ally

It has steam on it

u/NeglectedLight Apr 29 '26
Oh yeah, I mostly refer to SteamOS preinstalled in the system and how compatibility wise for games it seems they are pretty well optimized when running on the deck. I know you can dual boot the Ally with SteamOS but due to past experiences trying to “upgrade” devices I am kinda nervous on that part.

I used this device to finish my backlog "and it worth the money. Obviously not a. War machîne...but it’s good for me.

That depends… how familiar are you with Windows 11? It’s literally a mini handheld Windows computer. If you know nothing about Windows, then I don’t recommend it. It can play Steam, Xbox, and Epic games, so that’s a plus. So ask yourself whether you want a handheld gaming console or a mini handheld Windows computer.

I would say no and whole heartedly believe that the extra $$ for the X variant is well worth it, even if you have to take some more time to save some more money. That said, if you're playing indies/non-AAA titles that don't necessarily need the extra compute, then maybe it works for you.
HOWEVER, the "Z2A" model name is misleading at best and flat out false/manipulative advertising at worst.
The fact that they can even call it "Z2" anything is actually wild. So, heres the thing:
- The AI Z2 Extreme and the Z2 Extreme are Zen 5 CPU cores and RDNA 3.5 GPU cores, with the "AI" variant also containing the XDNA 2 NPU on package. Where the Z2 (non-extreme/non-A) is Zen 4 with RDNA 3. The Ryzen 9000 series desktop CPU's also use Zen 5 core architecture.
- The Z1 and Z1 Extreme are Zen 4 cores and RDNA 3 GPU cores. Neither model has an NPU. The Ryzen 7000 and 8000 series desktop CPU's also use Zen 4 core architecture.
Here's where it gets super confusing and misleading... The Z2 family also has a "Go" model and an "A" model.
- The Z2 Go uses Zen 3+ CPU cores and RDNA 3 GPU cores. Zen 3+ cores are found in AMD's mobile CPU's for Ryzen 6000 laptops.
- The Z2A uses Zen 2, you read that right, Zen 2 CPU cores and, wait for it, RDNA 2 GPU cores. Now, hold your breath, because the Zen 2 core architecture is the same architecture found in the Ryzen 3000 desktop family, released in 2019!
The reason this pisses me off so much is because if you buy a chip fabbed in 2025, that shares most of its name with the flagship chip for this generation, you would expect it to be largely similar and based off the same architecture but maybe trimmed down to contain few CPU and GPU cores or clocked significantly lower, etc. etc. What you would absolutely not expect is for the actual hardware to be based off of a 7-year old chip design. That would be like trying to choose between a 9900X or a 9700X thinking they'd be similar (as they should be), but then learning that the 9700X is actually full of 3000 series CPU/GPU cores... It's really a fucked up/grimy thing to do.
All of that said, the device is priced extremely competitively, especially when on sale. And 3000 series Ryzen were pretty solid little CPU's, but if I bought this device, thinking I'm getting the little brother to the XAX, when in reality, I'm getting something that isn't even going to be competitive with the Z1 versions of the OG ROG Ally, I would be extremely pissed off.
My advice would be to find an open-box/used OG ROG Ally X if you can find one in that price range because the performance will be better than the non-X Xbox Ally. I'm sure someone somewhere is looking to sell their ROG Ally to upgrade to a Go 2 or XAX or something.
End rant. Hope this helps. Shame on AMD for this naming convention.

To be completely honest I'm not sure of most of what you just said as I have always been a console gamer 😭 all I know if buy the game download the game and if it runs like ass lower the settings. If I can get it couple hundred off would you say go for it ? Or ignore completely and thank you for your reply to the post

He's paid astroturfing for Steam deck. Ignore him, if you can get the ally, it's a fun and nice device. You can play before sleep or if you have a long commute make sure to find a charger on the bus/train. Sweet device.

When you find the steam deck mentioned anywhere in my comments, aside from this comment, let me know. Because I’m pretty sure I supported his decision to buy it, but he should really know what he’s buying lol. And I wouldn’t recommend the steam deck to anyone. My recommendation was a used Z1E ally if he can find one and doesn’t mind the different ergo.

It really depends on if it gives you an enjoyable experience for the games you’re playing. I think if it fits in your budget and it runs the games you want to play and you’d be happy with it, then yes. But I’d also say that to older ROG Ally X (non-Xbox) might be floating around on eBay or marketplace for somewhere around the same price and will give you better performance. But I really like the design of the Xbox ally’s

Bro I'm just going to say this
A desktop use 500w power supply the APU for desktop vs laptop vs PC handheld is deep conversation
Some PC use 1000w power supply in perspective.
The Dev for Gran Turismo said making the game run on 4k on the ps5 that has power supply of 350w is harder to Dev then say trying to get a PC with 1000w.
In other words the APU on PC handheld are meant for handheld that use only 66w battery.
A laptop APU is designed differently.
Same with desktop they aren't the same.
PC handheld don't have 500w power supply nor is it connected to wall infinite amount of energy..
And even docked it still lacks 500w hell some extreme APU and cpu requires 750w power supply.
That's why from my IT Perspective your logic and everyone on Reddit is just blown out of the water.
The white ally is good if you change game settings.
All the games development for desktop are meant to run on infinite energy and 300w power supply minimum to 750w.
AMD is not the one who should be ashamed it's humans who don't understand the logic....
That's why you ain't ever going to see a engineer on here explaining this because even if he tried he won't be understood.

Tf are you talking about. Who said any thing about power? I mentioned the desktop models as a point of reference for release timeframes. When was the zen 2 architecture released? 2019. wtf is it doing in a new chip in 2025?
Imagine Apple releasing the “M5A” in 2026, and it’s an M1 with a new name. That’s what the Z2A is lol

Because it's new for APU pc handheld you don't understand even if I was to explain.
Wtf is it doing in a chip meant to deliver that kind of power is only possible now what you want current desktop architecture in a APU handheld that's just unrealistic expectations. And energy wise you want to run older than have potential with a few tweaks.
When the idea is this device is going to be used on the go. I know some ppl use it docked that's great but that's not why ppl like my self buy such.
To take a desktop APU to turn into laptop APU friendly for power.
I don't think I gave seen back in the day current navida GPU chips in laptops along with desktop.
Not even GPU and APU from desktop to mobile isn't as easy as your making it sound.
Having that in a APU in PC handheld is a achievement. You look at it as wtf lacking the understanding of engineering that to be running in low power consumption control State.
Vs 120v 500w and no limit no battery.
They don't take the same APU and just slap it on a laptop or PC handheld it won't work bro..
I'm not going back and forth bro.
Believe what you want and have all the unrealistic expectations you desire.

But it’s not, it’s a repackaged Zen2 cpu and an rdna2 GPU. They called it the Z2A to make it look like it’s the same family of product as the Z2E. Drop the 2 completely and call it the ZA unless you’re intentionally trying to mislead people.

You're missing the point completely and I can only think of so many analogies to help paint the picture for you. You seem to be at least half of an IT professional, so I'll use Nvidia as an example.
Nvidia's chip architecture for the most recent generation is codenamed "Grace Blackwell" and they announce that the new architecture will be in their 5000 series GPU's.
They release the desktop and mobile variants 5090, 5080, 5070, etc. etc. Each GPU using a different combination of cores, memory capacity, clock speeds, etc.
They decide to design a couple of high-efficiency chipsets to use in a first party handheld alongside GeForce Now, and call it the 5040 and 5030. By name alone, as a regular end user I can assume that a 5000 series GPU will have some configuration of Grace Blackwell GPU cores. However, in the tech specs, I see that while the 5040 uses the same core architecture as the rest of the Desktop and Mobile 5000 series, the 5030 is actually manufactured using Turing architecture used in the RTX 2000 series.
From a performance perspective, this is ENOURMOUS. That doesn't mean that the device it's used in is a "bad" device inherently. It might be capable enough in most scenarios and would work well for a not-insignificant number of users, but to call it a 5000 series GPU would just be a flat-out lie and a crystal-clear example of deceptive marketing. You're not buying a device with a 5000 series GPU, you're buying a device with a 2000 series GPU that's had some makeup thrown on it.
I genuinely don't understand how you're incapable of seeing that.

I bought this, as can’t afford the X. I absolutely love it to be honest.
