I’m just curious how many of you think that Julessa and Walter, as well as Julessa and Col. Taylor, were realistic storylines?
I ask this because, of course, Julessa arrived to Hillman as a student. She was older than most of the students, of course. And she had lived a life that many of her fellow students hadn’t lived yet (having been married and divorced).
But she was a student nonetheless.
And because both Walter and Col. Taylor were faculty staff, there was a power dynamic at play in their relationships with Julessa.
I think about life on an actual HBCU campus. Some college campuses, of course, have rules about fraternization/hook ups between facility and students.
And I think about how on A Different World, Walter was openly discussing his evolving feelings for Julessa with Lettie Bostic.
Part of me feels like Julessa’s relationship with Walter, and subsequent marriage to Col. Taylor, weren’t really realistic because some HBCUs would not have tolerated that faculty hooking up with students.
