NEW EPISODE DISCUSSION Oversexualization Spoiler

I know the reboot is a completely different world from the original, but the heavy focus on sex, cheating, and relationship drama was a turn-off for me.

The original A Different World tackled so many issues and gave its characters real growth beyond their love lives. Sex and sexuality are important topics, but this version just feels like every other oversexualized drama on TV right now, only set on a college campus.

I did enjoy season 1, but I think I’ll be tapping out there. I’m too grown for these storylines.

Anyone else feel this way, or am I just being picky?

Character Discussion I feel like people over doing it when it comes to Dwayne and Whitley. Spoiler

They were young and they were both making immature moves, they were just trying to get it together. I get it tho Dwayne was trying to humble Whitley at times. Whitley was far from innocent too and lots of people on the internet saying she should’ve married Bryon. He ain’t even love her fr. Why propose so fast? & Whitley ain’t love Bryon and that explains why she was feeling pressured to marry him. I liked them as a couple but y’all gotta chill on the negatives and appreciate the chemistry they gave us.

Spoilers Anybody shipping Debo and Shaq as Cornell and Maleah? Spoiler

I love a little delusion and I feel they’re together in real life. In one of their most recent interviews Cornell said he likes older women. I see Maleah being an exception because of the reasons he gave for that. She seems incredibly mature , very articulate. Their chemistry is undeniable

Spoilers Just made it to the end and I went from loving to hating Ellington

Kojo and Ellington are both too pushy, and too possessive of girls they just met. But by the last scene, Ellington genuinely made me worried for Deborah. That man just wanted to win the little competition he was in with Shaquille. I have a feeling he'll hurt her and she'll regret losing Shaquille for a man who just wanted to hit it. Men like Kojo suck, but men like Ellington are dangerous when a woman falls for their tricks and charm.

At this point, the only boy I like on this show is Amir and he still did his friend dirty.

What actors/actresses do you wish were in the reboot?

I'm just curious if anyone thought they wish certain actors played some of the roles instead or if there were anyone they felt was missing from this season. Personally, I wish Martin Bobb-Semple played the British guy just because I wish I saw him in more shows since watching him on All American: Homecoming and he's finer to me as a fellow black Brit lol.

It can someone you'd like to see in upcoming seasons too, assuming they'll be more seasons.

Edit: I watched more episodes and I take it back! Chibuikem Uche is perfect for the role of Kojo. Vincent Jamal Hooper fills the Martin Bobb-Semple void lol.

Spoilers That’s just how fast college goes Spoiler

Everyone’s talking about how fast season 1 went with the characters completing the first year of college by the end, but honestly that’s how fast college goes. You blink and suddenly it’s the summer and you can’t remember anything that happened then next then you know you’re crossing the stage.

P.s. This is mostly a joke they definitely should have extended freshman year because the pacing made things confusing and the characters lacked depth because of it.

Does anyone else dislike how Rashida behaves as a friend? Spoiler

I found that from the very start Deborah-Rashida friendship was very one sided. Deborah was so supportive, positive and a very genuine friend to Rashida. Yet on the other hand Rashida does not stop being unnecessarilly negative to Deborah also Rashida seems to be very self centered without trying to understand Deborah even if the whole world is taking Deborah's side it appears that Rashida is determined to still be against her.

I don't see any real love from Rashida because suppose there is an argument real friends feel bad afterwards and want to see their friend happy and make up, Rashida doubles down and does not care. ( eg.Rashida fired her from a workplace that she had no power to fire anyone and btw that was meant to be her friend and then when her manager told he she had to bring her back Rashida was genuinely upset) Note ypu this is not a small friend argument matter we are talking about monetary income and work how self centered does Rashida have to be to blow up like that even though Deborah was doing her work but it just wasn't to Rashida's made up standards and go all the way to try and fire her on the spot.

For me it is quite bizzare that Deborah is trying to be Rashida's friend when she is actually not benefiting in any way or getting anything in return other than constant unnecessary negative judgements from Rashida as if Rashida is an all knowing superior being meanwhile Deborah has a great deal of her own struggles and problems she tries very hard to deal with them and not once does she do Rashida dirty or just dump her anxiety onto her which in my opinion Rashida has done a lot of times to Deborah.

If I was Deborah I would absolutely cut off Rashida and look for genuine friendships because for Deborah she is just doing her self bad can't even relax for a second without hearing it from Rashida as if that's her parent.

Unless it happened completely off camera, and therefore "non-canon" anyway, Byron never made it past The Gates of Paradise during his relationship with Whitley.

That poor bastard....

A different world aged well

In preparation to watch the reboot of a different world I binged the original over the course of a week. I tend to enjoy older shows, but some of them tend to age poorly with racist and misogynistic tropes, types of slurs used, and strange messaging; however, a different world wasn’t like that. Watching as a Gen Z from a 2026 perspective the worst parts were Walter’s and Ron’s views on women and them being playboys but those were usually isolated to their characters. Furthermore, other characters made a joke out of these comments so they weren’t taken so seriously. The deeper issues displayed were handled very well (rape, abuse, workplace harassment, racism etc) and honestly had better messages than most modern shows. All this to say the show is pretty much timeless and has a good balance of comedy and reality of college/young adult experiences. Truthfully I think this has to due with it being a Black show, the type of awareness we have towards social issues and how they’re depicted reigns supreme.

Julessa and Walter & Julessa and Col. Taylor (How realistic?)

I’m just curious how many of you think that Julessa and Walter, as well as Julessa and Col. Taylor, were realistic storylines?

I ask this because, of course, Julessa arrived to Hillman as a student. She was older than most of the students, of course. And she had lived a life that many of her fellow students hadn’t lived yet (having been married and divorced).

But she was a student nonetheless.

And because both Walter and Col. Taylor were faculty staff, there was a power dynamic at play in their relationships with Julessa.

I think about life on an actual HBCU campus. Some college campuses, of course, have rules about fraternization/hook ups between facility and students.

And I think about how on A Different World, Walter was openly discussing his evolving feelings for Julessa with Lettie Bostic.

Part of me feels like Julessa’s relationship with Walter, and subsequent marriage to Col. Taylor, weren’t really realistic because some HBCUs would not have tolerated that faculty hooking up with students.

Spoilers Rashida and the tag Spoiler

I wish we saw what happened after Kojo pulled the tag. He already knew she had financial struggles but to see them explore it a bit further with something like that would have been good

Fraternities

I'm wondering if folks listened to the recent Breakfast Club interview with Cree, Jasmine, and Darryl and what your thoughts are around Darryl's comment re: trans people joining fraternities. The conversation quickly turned, but I found it disappointing and surprising considering there are queer characters on the reboot.

Shaquille's and Deborah backstory prior to attending Hillman and their dynamic.

Amir's backstory what did he do/ didn't do to catch a case.

Andre, I need more of a story. I ain't see my guy until until the Gala.

Candace story too. See needs something, I want to see why she is like she is.

Whitley evolved so much on the original show but the reboot puts her right back into her old caricature. Such a shame.

(OLD)Episode Discussion Name some of the most underrated scenes on the show?

One is the scene with Lena and her father after she wrote the essay lying about her father being in the military and a Black Panther, and he came to see her at the school, and they had that talk at the end where she broke down. That was some of Jada's best acting work, especially from an emotional stand point.

Freddie scene when she was asked to pray for Kim's father after he got shot, and she started talking about not being religious to God. Love that scene.

Ron is Dwayne

After S1, the writers slightly swapped Ron and Dwayne as characters. Dwayne was always taking the lead, especially when it came to trying to talk to the ladies, while Ron was the quiet, nerdy one; that's why he dated Millie. However, in season 2, Ron was the flirtatious one, while Dwayne focused on school for the most part. I know Dwayne states at the start if season 2 that he wanted to get his act together, but this completely altered the dynamic between the two. I was so surprised to see that Ron became an irresponsible slacker ladies' man (craziest part), failing classes and taking advantage of Dwayne. I enjoy the direction of Dwayne's character, but I wish they kept the quirky parts of Ron while making him less creepy and more mature.

Spoilers A different world 2026, finished the first season! Spoiler

Ok, finally finished the whole season of A different world. The first episode I wasn’t sure if I’d get through the whole season but first episodes on a lot of new shows are hit or miss. I knew the more episodes, the more the cast would gel and the story would develop or at least that was my hope and my hopes were correct! The first season being the pilot season (I’m sure Netflix would not have mind cutting it after one season) was rushed but knowing it’s renewed for a season 2, I’m sure they will take there time with the story and character introduction. That was one of my biggest issues with season 1, characters were being introduced as if they were always there but I see season 2 developing their backstories a bit more especially with Hazel’s past resurfacing. The show wrapped up with a solid 8/10 for me and this may be the only show were I actually want the nepotism and I loved seeing the old characters coming back in a way that makes sense. Very excited for season 2

What's the deal with Freddie? Spoiler

I'm on S6 of the show, but I'm just confused about Freddie and her financial situation. When she first comes on the show, she is scrambling to find a job and tells Mr. Gains she'll be there daily afterwards, but she never makes an effort to get a job again. Freddie just spends the entire show being in everyone's face, as a hippie. Yes, she works for Jalesa in later seasons, but she never needs money, or that shows cues she has any sense of it. What do her parents do?

Second, why was Freddie's hair a constant joke?

Third, how did Freddie get into law school? I thought she was failing for half the show, then they say Shazza is making her get lower grades (implying she's usually a good student), and then she decided at the last minute to take the LSAT and apply to law school to be accepted.
