Imagine if AI art were your biggest issue in life. damn.

Those people losing their decades long careers and health insurance do think it’s a pretty big deal…

How is AI art causing people to lose decade long careers?

1

u/ProfessionalBoss2428 3h ago

People in animation, film, games, and tv who are being replaced by ai. Heck epic games fired 20% of their workforce, including artists, to replace them with AI. I think those people have a pretty valid reason to be bothered

Epic games says the layoffs were due to economic slowdowns, not AI. Not that I subscribe entirely to what a CEO might say, but there is no evidence that is true. While I do agree that there are some people in animation, film and tv that are being replaced due to ai, I would also say that AI is creating opportunities for others to create careers to the same degree or even greater.

They fired a thousand people, somehow missed the deadlines they didn’t change, and then suddenly said they had to use ai. And this is for something like Fortnite that prints money. Guess what, the CEO manipulated you.

And I’d like to see your evidence of ai creating opportunities for union healthcare provided by the employer…..which is what people are losing. And these are plans an individual literally can’t get, you have to be part of a large group for access to them.

I'm not saying that AI creates those types of opportunities. What I'm saying is just like the industrial age created demand for people who understood how to build and maintain machines, AI is creating demand for people who know how to use and understand AI, or even creating entirely new demand for new technological discoveries.

It's not perfect, and I don't think it's awesome to see anyone lose their job and lose their way of life, but that's more a symptom of capitalism than AI.

So what you’re saying is: these people lost a great deal with no comparable alternative in place so they are justifiably upset by that.

“Those people losing their decades long careers and health insurance do think it’s a pretty big deal…”

Yes absolutely. I would push back a little by saying this happens with any major technological shift.

Candle makers lost their livelihood when electricity became popular, etc.

So first off not the discussion but also just as a “human to human” piece of advice:

When someone loses their career and is upset by everything that means you don’t have to push back. You can stfu instead. Sometimes not saying anything at all is better than saying “sure that’s awful but…”

Fortnite doesn’t print money like it used to. It has been declining for years and the company’s attempts to diversify have failed. The CEO explicitly denied it was AI driven.

I am so sick of people blaming individual, team, or company level failures on this technology.

In the long run it isn’t. But there were layoffs a year or two ago. Companies already regret it.

1

u/Horror-Detective4138 3h ago

I agree that some companies are regretting some layoffs, but I wouldn't attribute it to AI. Our economy is slowing down based on weak economic growth. Layoffs typically happen due to that.

I actually think in the long run AI might cause more layoffs than it does currently, however I think it adds opportunities that didn't exist before to a greater degree.

2

u/MarkMatson6 3h ago

Yep. Most of the “AI layoffs” were just excuses. That said, I think a lot of CEOs also hoped AI would save them from the repercussions.

2

u/Bra--ket 3h ago

No company wants to downsize, so it's always an excuse. If they had the option they would just increase capacity and make more money.

There are plenty of people who paint and draw by hand despite the fact that photoshop can do it better.

1

u/ProfessionalBoss2428 3h ago

Not sure how that changes the fact people losing their careers are bothered by losing their careers.

1

u/WhatNazisAreLike 3h ago

Did photoshop kill entire careers?

1

u/ProfessionalBoss2428 3h ago

Those people losing their decades long careers and health insurance do think it’s a pretty big deal…

So you’re saying nobody has lost a career to ai?

u/ProfessionalBoss2428 3h ago

So you say not a single person has lost their job? I’ll go call my friends and tell them they don’t exist

Wait... did AI create a utopia and we didn't even notice?

Unsolicited fake Tom Waits quotes are not helping

Like this is a guy who successfully sued Doritos for making a proto-deepfake in 1990 -- I doubt the guy would need much prompting (har har) to talk shit about Claude or whatever

The irony is that the original quote ("The world is a hellish place, and bad writing is destroying the quality of our suffering") is already relevant to the arguments over AI-assisted art -- turning it into a meme guaranteed not to land with anyone who isn't already terminally online is itself BAD WRITING

2

u/slydorm05 2h ago

Why'd you need to be terminally online to know a Tom Waits reference though? What he represents is quite opposite of that.

and now its part of the world issues

How is it unsolicited? If they're meaning it popping up on their social media feeds, then 90% of what I see is unsolicited. You just have to ignore what you don't like and move on.

I lol'd at the post, it's true

You may wanna become Amish now, AI is just getting started

destroying suffering is a good thing right?

we are blessed to live in a time where we can witness such truly profound art such as that speech.

I'd argue it's people complaining about AI art, but to each their own.
