Stitches!
This was a pretty fun first episode! So we're basically following Aki and her friends after leaving their village to help Aki find her dad and finally put him down if he has been turned into a zombie. This is by far the most unique anime I've seen premiere so far today, so by that alone, I am already sold on this show.
I think it's interesting how Aki and her friends are clearly used to dealing with zombies. It sounds like the village they came from focuses on survival and physical training.
Oh, and apparently Aki is an adrenaline junkie? Natsuki describes her as the kind of person who turns fear into fun. I guess that explains why she keeps on climbing the roof of their three-wheeled kei truck.
I think this was a pretty solid episode, and everyone who's been introduced is pretty likable. The fact that this is written by the author Katsuwo, the same author of Hitoribocchi and Mitsuboshi Colors, I have no doubt this show is going to be more chill slice-of-life/CGDCT (even if there's one boy in the group) anime and won't turn into your typical zombie apocalypse show.

As a camera nerd I'm delighted to see a TLR (twin lense reflex) camera in an anime. Yes, this kind of camera is really old! And I love how even the format of the photo they took is correct. The makers knew what they were doing.
A CGDCT anime in a postapocalyptic environment with zombies?! Sounds like fun, and the first episode was super fun!

If I didn't check it out beforehand, I would never have guessed this was from the author of OG Bocchi!
I thought she would want to find her dad to reunite with him (or try and save him if he turned), but she wants to send him to the afterlife (to honor a promise)!
Normally I would be concerned about... Will she REALLY be able to do it? But she doesn't seem to have any hesitation about killing them (even before confirming whether it's her father), so..!
Of course we're still gonna have a beach episode!
(If the zombies have one piece swimsuits, sorry humans, I'm rooting for them!)
Well, I'm not the only one who's passionate about something; She seems to only care about all things cute!
I wonder where that passion comes from, because that can't have been a high priority during her childhood;
Seems they spent all their time being trained against zombies... Never learned to read Kanji,
they don't know what a building or a supermarket is... But she knows about beauty products and the like?
Is that the last thing her mom taught her or something?
Musclehead has his passion too!
Well, this one's useful at least!
Alright, this one's useful too!
Some people might think you're coming after their resources, some people may have gone crazy, some people might think they can now get away with anything they want to do, etc...
If you're brave strong enough, anything's a dildo weapon!
With swords and bats? Zombie Hordes gain + 5 members!
Oh damn; They're gonna make a gattling gun or something?
If they ever need to use someone as a bait to escape, take this one!
Welp. This one's not gonna be a bed-fighter, that's for sure!
Damn, she won't even EAT with them?
I'm already suspecting that something awful happened to her, and that's why she's wary of everyone... (Backstory time, somewhere down the line?)
Well, this was pretty fun! Keeping this one.

Before you ask, yes this is from the author of Mitsuboshi Colors and Hitoribocchi no Marumaruseikatsu. It's funny how they made a bunch of cute girl series and then went "okay what about if I made cute girls who kill zombies"

Good thing Yu has brains since nobody else in this show does.
I have to admit seeing them make a fertilizer bomb kind of took me aback.

The Work Hard Fairy charm hanging from the rear-view mirror implies that this is the future of the world of Hitori Bocchi no ○○ Seikatsu.
31
u/Lodju https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lodju 15d ago
In an alternate universe Hitori wished the school to be canceled so she wouldn't be forced to make other friends than Kai and the monkey paw was like "fine have a zombie apocalypse"

We all know if one of the Bocchi cast got zombified, it would be Aru.

So far not bad! Bit too much CGI at times but it looks like a fun Zombie story and checking the MAL page, the manga is only 17 chapters so I could see a full adaptation!
And if its only 1 cour, with these lighthearted vibes and slow/weak zombies I can't see any of the cast dying + I have no doubt they will find her father.
Actually looking forward to this one.
19
u/kevinthedot 15d ago
It's surprising that it's getting adapted at all. I'm pretty sure this series got the axe and that's why it's so short. Probably only being made due to other anime adaptations of Katsuwo's works being so well received.
Given all that, I wonder if we'll get some anime original content added to flesh it out for a more full season.
17
u/runevault 15d ago
Axed doesn't mean shit anymore. Black Torch last season was a 10 year old dead manga and it got adapted.
4
u/mmcjawa_reborn 14d ago
Yeah I think production groups are getting desperate for IP and either remaking older content or adapting these sort of cancelled series. Kill Blue was also cancelled IIRC, but still got a (good) adaptation.

Them not knowing how to read kanji, and not recognising a building shows not only how they grew up but also how long it has likely been since the zombie apocalypse. This is more a post-post-apocalypse setting.
8
8
u/kevinthedot 15d ago
The intro said it's been 13 years.
Notably, the OP has a shot of the main girl as a kid in front of what looks like Tokyo Tower. Given that the older 3 seem to be in their late teens, it seems like they probably were all like 3-4 years old when the zombie outbreak started. The younger ones would then presumably be born after, so it's kinda weird how they are more informed than the older ones here.
5
u/cyberscythe 15d ago
it kind of reminds me of Shuumatsu Touring from last year; same sort of genki girl who's facing the post apocalypse with big energy, and it also doesn't front load a bunch of exposition
9
u/TheBusStop12 15d ago
This is kinda giving me upbeat version of Girls Last Tour vibes. Post Apocalyptic SoL with people just living their best lives in a ruined city. It's fun
7
u/cyberscythe 15d ago

That was fun. Its not deep or complicated, and it's not going to be anime of the year, but I'm looking forward to the next episode.

u/ModieOfTheEast 15d ago
Actually a fun spin on the whole Zombie formula. Instead of people scavenging for stuff they already know, you have the next generation with no plan at all. Might not be the best starting point, but maybe we see what their village was like. Could be they said they don't need anything from the old world anymore. Let's see where it goes.

This is like The Walking Dead but with cuter waifus and more goofy shenanigans lol. I like it! Looking forward to the rest of the season.
8
u/alotmorealots 15d ago
It's uncomplicated but well executed fun, at least at the moment! I feel like the cartoonishness of some of the action (like the zombie explosion) helps set the tone fairly firmly.
6
u/Lucky-Clover-YT 15d ago
I’m kind of wondering how the hell they’ve survived this long without knowing about apartments or supply stores. This is definitely going to be a show you don’t want to think too hard about lol
I don’t think this is going to blow anyone’s mind but I could see this being fun for what it is. My mind inevitably draws comparisons to Zom 100 which hooked me a little more effectively and looked better, this show has some really great color design but the CG is pretty subpar. I’ll probably check out at least a few more episodes of this to see where it goes.
16
u/TheBusStop12 15d ago
I think they lived in a small village of survivors and basically spent their whole time focused on combat training. Basically they're isolated small town hicks visiting Tokyo for the first time
1
u/Ralathar44 12d ago
Even if they trained real hard against zombies they are definitely too dumb to just have survived in general. They'd all have drank bad water, eaten poison berries, or have done something too stupid to survive or some shizzle by now. They have like 3 brain cells between them.

u/AnimeJunkieXL https://myanimelist.net/profile/2bursting 15d ago

I like it, the characters are simple, tropey but charismatic, It has that lightness and fun from Mitsuboshi Colors and Bocchi
4
u/runevault 15d ago
Originally wasn't interested in this show, but today's slate was a mixed bag so gave it a shot. This might be my favorite show of the day for now. Love the energy of the characters and how they interact. Also fertilizer bombs are always fun.

This season's "mucking about in the apocalypse" comes in the form of Left 4 Desu.
Bare bones plot so far but it's clear a lot of thought has gone into the worldbuilding and implications of Red Day on society.
2
u/hanmkim 15d ago
They wouldn't have any usable gasoline at that point and how did the plastic on the fertilizer not disintegrate from the elements. Also ammonium nitrate fertilizer hasn't even been sold in most stores worldwide to regular consumers in forever. Literally unwatchable (I'll be back next week).
3
u/ExaminationNo9186 15d ago
I am not going to lie, this seasons list of shows on MAL doesn't have much interest for me.
I went into the first episode thinking "Yeah, it seems unique enough and the blurb doesn't start with '{Character} wakes in a new world to discover...'".
This is certainly a show I will give the 3 episode chance, with the possibility of watching the whole season
2
u/Running-World 11d ago
I didn’t have a lot this season and decided to give this a shot too. I’m not into isekai either. More slice of life and down to earth modern drama and romance, but this seemed like it could be interesting.
3
u/dude_1818 https://myanimelist.net/profile/dude1818 15d ago
I have no expectations for this one; could be the new Train to the End of the World, could be shit, and I can't tell after one ep
Letting the main girl be obsessed with weapons is fun, since the jock and girly-girl are incredibly tropey. I do love the butch girl
My biggest concern so far is that the show seems to have no agreement on how long it's been since the zombie apocalypse; the narration said 12 years, which makes the decay in the scenery, but somehow there's no decay inside buildings, and it seems incoherent what concepts the kids do and don't take for granted. Reminds me a lot of Duskmourn like that
2
u/Embarrassed-Match-78 15d ago
Seems like people are enjoying it. It was a fun first episode, but not for me. I might circle back to this one later. Never been big on zombie stuff for the most part.
2
u/Keyblader007 15d ago
I didn't watch the dub but according to ANN they made Yu (a young girl) and a she/her in the sub, use they/them in the dub for...reasons??? I guess?
2
u/runevault 15d ago
Yeah the dub kept saying they/them and I wasn't sure why as nothing else implied they were presenting that way.
5
u/Keyblader007 14d ago
Seems like it was forced representation but their team lead.

They as singular is a common grammar tool, even for cases where you simply do not know the gender let alone people who do not claim to be of either gender.
1
u/Keyblader007 13d ago
Except we know her gender and the dub was just forcing it, this isn't the first time they force certain terms or ideals in dubs sadly.
1
u/KyProRen 13d ago edited 7d ago
I was just watching it, and when they said "The thing about Yu is, they're like REALLY weak! They're even weaker than me!" and I was like "Wait, you mean Yu ISN'T a girl (per se)!?"
No joke, I thought Yu was meant to be a girl the whole time. How was I supposed to know they're meant to be non-binary?
3
1
u/Keyblader007 13d ago
They aren't, it's a dub only thing. Go figure...
3
u/KyProRen 13d ago
So... the opposite of what they did with Crona from Soul Eater?
1
u/Keyblader007 8d ago
I think so. What did they do with him again its been years...
1
u/KyProRen 8d ago
They changed their pronouns to He/Him in the English Dub even though Chrona was supposed to be non-binary.
I found out about it on Death Battle.
1
u/Keyblader007 7d ago
Ah. Back then no one cared about that stuff in dubs nowadays they force it where it doesn't even exist. Fun how times change drastically.
1
u/hbmonk 12d ago
Yu isn't with the other girls in the hot spring or wearing a swimsuit in the OP, so maybe something is revealed later on
1
u/Keyblader007 8d ago
She's a female according to literally everything online I looked up. That could be more her personality.
2
u/Ok_Technician7802 14d ago
So the zombies can climb a building but couldn't climb on the bus?
The characters look atleast 15-20, red day was 13 years ago yet they don't have any knowledge of the pre red day world? Mc doesn't even know what a store is.
Besides the contradictions I am loving the energy of mc. Looking forward to more
2
u/CyanSorrow https://myanimelist.net/profile/CyanSorrow 8d ago
Idk about you, but I can't recall the details of most anything from when I was 5 or under lol. If I was whisked away to a village and raised with no schooling and only physical training, I wouldn't know what a store is either.
There is no explaining the zombie bit tho lol
2
u/Roboglenn 15d ago
From the same creative mind behind Hitoribocchi no marumaru Seikatsu comes their take on the zombie apocalypse subgenre. And by the looks of it, dump some Pop Rocks and Laughy Taffy into Zombieland and you get this lighthearted romp.
One handed handstand pushups on the back of a moving truck!!!
Don't think I didn't notice that Do Your Best Fairy head plushie that was hanging off the truck's rearview mirror.

And now we're suddenly in Dead Rising.
All training no studying huh. That explains their peak physical capabilities.

1
u/Alter_Kyouma 15d ago
Unfortunately for them, they got the zombies that can run, jump and climb, instead of the slow walking ones.
1
u/99acrewood_ 15d ago
This was all right! It's been a good minute since I engaged with any zombie media (especially since that time period where it was basically everywhere around peak Walking Dead times) and I liked how colorful this looked so I gave it a try.
It sits in that B-tier anime slot that Warrior Princess and Barbaric King was in a couple seasons ago where it's nothing remarkable but still fun, and characters are very easily placed in their neat little erratic leader, meathead guy, etc. boxes. It's also nice to have a show that's one-and-done considering the manga run was so short, so I look forward to seeing where this goes.
Also it's an Aki who's more fun than the one I'm used to.

Haven’t watched a zombie anime since Zom 100. I liked how unique the zombies looked (and the fact they are actually referred to as zombies). In fact, they look more like monsters. Hopefully we get more information about the mysterious disease that caused all this later on.

I'm surprised this is on my region's Crunchyroll. It isn't listed on the seasonal lineup.
Well then, it's another win. I'm hoping for the same as Policeman Chojo and Zero Believers.

Yu's not very athletic? She'll very much appreciate guns since I doubt she could pull the string of a bow back very long.
1
u/Draine8 13d ago
Has anyone watched the dubbed version? Why did the localizer translate Yu as They/Them instead of She/Her? Did the subbed get it wrong or did the dub?
2

Same reason Neferpitou is called "he/him". Japanese doesn't have rigid pronouns like English. They usually use the person's name instead. People in an uproar about two equally valid translations

nah, the dub was trying to force the representation. Yuu is female, she's even gendered as such on the AniList page

The best zombie shows are idiotic and nonsensical but so much of this doesn't make sense. Why do the zombies even want to kill people but not each other? How come that girl didn't know what a building was but knows how to develop film from a camera from the 60s? Even rural areas have buildings or did the zombies just act as a demolition crew for no apparent reason and methodically tear them all down? They apparently have a source of gasoline for their car and gasoline loses its effectiveness after 25 years and there has been no gas refineries or distribution since presumably most people died.

I was really really looking forward to this one, but it was kinda a disappointment... dialogue was very clunky and expository, each character had like one trait, there were a ton of plot holes in the worldbuilding... it's just not good :(
