Everyone is feeling Ranmas power creep. The goku vs vegeeta struggle

37

u/Frontier246 15d ago

I love that we're now getting into Ranma power scaling lol.

20

u/suboptimal_prime73 15d ago

Please god no

I still have the scars from my time in the discussion board trenches

1

u/hobozombie 9d ago

Even after they had official stats, people still went on and on about how they were wrong.

11

u/Alej_11 15d ago

I mean, they were already wall to small building the last seasons, now with the new move that destroys boulders with one touch we could upscale them even more

82

u/BosuW 15d ago

If cooking is chemistry, then Akane is an international treaty violator

31

u/Frontier246 15d ago

Akane's love for Ranma is truly toxic lol.

18

u/Jacob-C 15d ago

Cooking so bad it disrupted the forest's ecosystem.

59

u/Solar_Slushie 15d ago edited 15d ago

Watching Akane make that curry was like watching a horror movie.

I was a bit surprised this was the first time the remake touched upon Akane's horrible cooking skills, since it was such a ubiquitous gag in the first anime.

26

u/professorMaDLib 15d ago

This arc is one of the earliest instances of the gag, and they actually delayed it a season, so it should be pretty common after this point.

6

u/Shay_Guy_ 13d ago

THE first instance, as I recall — Ranma and Genma’s shock at the discovery wasn’t added to this version.

135

u/Philiquaz 15d ago

That Akane cooking cut was the animation equivalent of clipfarming holy

64

u/Alej_11 15d ago

The scene was extremely well animated, even for the series standards (like, last season big fights had that level). Idk what mappa is cooking with this remake, but I'll let them do their thing

48

u/duo99dusk 15d ago

Let them cook

43

u/saga999 15d ago

so Akane doesn't.

3

u/Ass-Puncher 11d ago

She was whipping up shit in a kettle, boiling shit.

Actual shit?

Boiling poo, in a kettle.
Bro the smell.

37

u/Frontier246 15d ago

They made that cooking animation as extra as Akane's actual cooking skill lol.

30

u/FallenPears 15d ago

There's probably better or at least on par good cooking animations out there, but it's certainly my first time seeing such a well done bad cooking animation lmao.

12

u/Allansfirebird 15d ago

That was budget well-spent on MAPPA's part.

16

u/MashiroAzuki https://myanimelist.net/profile/MashiroAzuki 15d ago

Fr it's so crisp and fluid as if they put all their budget and talent into this cooking scene

2

u/XsStreamMonsterX 13d ago

Atsuko Ishida is truly a treasure.

1

u/bestmaokaina 11d ago

You can tell all of Chainsawman Reze profit helped them increase the quality even more

40

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 15d ago

We are so back! And poor Ryouga! That was one heck of a one-sided beatdown from Ranma. Like, I love how they're not playing the entire thing as a joke like with Kunou-senpai, we actually get to see Ryouga get absolutely humiliated because of how much stronger Ranma is now.

So Ryouga is now teaming up with Shampoo's grandma so granny can get Akane out of the picture and Ranma can marry Shampoo. That technique Granny is teaching to Ryouga looks insane tho.

While it's adorable that Akane is excited to cook for Ranma, she really should've asked Kasumi to teach her how to cook first. I do like that we get to see why her cooking is so horrible instead of just showing us the resulting disgusting dish.

I'm sorry, Akane. I love you, but you're definitely in the wrong here. You've tasted your own cooking and you 100% know it tastes bad! You can't get upset at Ranma for telling you to taste your food while cooking!

13

u/Frostbitten_Moose 14d ago

Yeah, the thing that makes the joke for me is that Ranma isn't just straight up suffering here, he's offering a legit point of advice. Just taste the damned stuff while cooking. And she's suffered from trying to taste it too. But she's too stubborn and prideful around him to back down even when she knows he's got a point.

5

u/Forsaken_Kassia10217 14d ago

Yep! I love how both of them are so stubborn and prideful.

I really love how because Ranma is such a jokester/trickster, whenever he tries to be sincere Akane never believes it, instead digging into her own stubborn and prideful personality.

Their personalities clash in such a fun way.

30

u/Raymond49090 15d ago

I'm on Ranma's side for this one. If food makes you physically ill, he should be honest and call it like it is.

(Also is it just me or was Akane's cooking scene weirdly high-effort animated for what it is?)

4

u/Frostbitten_Moose 14d ago

Now I kinda want a Ranma/Hell's Kitchen crossover where Akane has to admit she didn't taste her own food to Gordon Ramsey.

61

u/Dolomite808 15d ago

I'm glad this show is back. It feels both nostalgic and fresh at the same time.  Looking forward to another season of martial arts romcom shenanigans.

22

u/Frontier246 15d ago

Probably one of the most well-animated romcoms too between all the fights, characters bouncing around, and Akane's cooking!

29

u/bananeeek https://myanimelist.net/profile/bananek 15d ago

I didn't even know it was airing this season!

I wish there was more than just a glimpse of Shampoo, but I'll take it.

16

u/Frontier246 15d ago

I wish there was more than just a glimpse of Shampoo, but I'll take it.

I love her scene in the OP and in her introduction where it felt like the animators were like "Shampoo is cute and we know it so we're going to flex it for all its worth."

10

u/CitronClassic672 15d ago

Genuinely, I was legit shocked how pretty she was drawn for such a short scene in the OP. Ranma’s back and so Shampoo is waiting no time reminding us who best girl is.

17

u/flaminglambchops 15d ago

Last season was Shampoo season. Now it's Ryoga season.

29

u/magumanueku 15d ago

Lmao at Shampoo peeking at Ryoga's PP-chan with a cute little "aiyaa"

4

u/Typhoonis88 https://myanimelist.net/profile/typhoonis88 14d ago

I had to pause at that scene it had me rolling hiding behind the pan then with the peek hahaha

See also Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner - I wonder if Rumiko Takahashi ever watched some of the old Looney Tunes shorts, because the cartoon logic in her early manga, you'd almost expect Bugs Bunny to pop out of a hole in an Urusei Yatsura chapter. :P

2

u/Frostbitten_Moose 14d ago

Shame Genma only has a limited number of signs.

2

u/Teramol https://myanimelist.net/profile/Teramol 15d ago

It really reminds of Elizabeth from Gintama basically always communicating with signs.

24

u/mythriz 15d ago

One entire bag of salt

At that point, isn't it actually life-threatening to eat that dish lol

14

u/professorMaDLib 15d ago

Yes but Ranma characters are built different

3

u/DesiOtaku https://myanimelist.net/profile/DesiOtaku 11d ago

Bender: "The salt level was 10% less than a lethal dose!"

20

u/Mr_Pogi_In_Space 15d ago

Ryouga rolling away as a pretzel was the best thing ever

40

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 15d ago

Akane’s curry might give Yor a run for her money lol. Durian is rough on its own. I can’t even imagine it in the world’s saltiest curry with dried fermented fish lol.

29

u/Frontier246 15d ago

It's obvious that the vinegar is what threw everything off. Without that it would've been fine!

8

u/GtrsRE 14d ago

Don't worry the chopping board was tenderized enough

22

u/professorMaDLib 15d ago

Akane is one of the OG shit cooks.

42

u/devenrc 15d ago

Noooo Akane bailing on Ranma to take care of Ryoga, my OTP is going through the wringer once again 😭

23

u/Frontier246 15d ago

I love how the best thing to happen to Ryoga are the things he hate most: being a pig and getting beat up by Ranma.

Why? Because they're the main reasons Akane is so sweet on him.

3

u/Roskal 14d ago

Ranma should just dump him in the fountain in the beginning. Ryoga clearly doesn't appreciate that he saved him there.

8

u/Frostbitten_Moose 14d ago

Ryoga never appreciates it when Ranma does him a solid. Not like this is the first time that's happened.

2

u/Frostbitten_Moose 14d ago

Don't worry. I'm sure Akane will give Ryoga a good luck meal before his big fight with Ranma, and the stomach pains will give Ranma the win.

42

u/khanvau 15d ago

After MAO ended last Saturday, we immediately got Ranma 1/2 this Saturday. It's truly the best time to be a fan of Rumiko Takahashi.

The new OP is great. I don't think the song is as catchy as the 2nd OP yet, but I'm surprised by how much action it has. And judging by the trailers and marketing, it seems this season will be much more action-focused.

The action animation budget has seemingly gotten a huge upgrade over last season, not that they were bad. But it's unusual for a series to increase its budget in its 3rd season. Usually the first season is at its peak animation-wise. Whoever's decision it was to give this series the attention it finally deserves, thank you.

Even the first episode was so fun to watch. Just look at the scene of Akane's cooking. Normally, scenes like that would probably be interrupted by lots of cutaways, but even that had great animation. This gives me high hopes for not just this season but also future seasons.

The ED was also great. I love that it's continuing the RanKane focus from the previous EDs.

22

u/Torque-A 15d ago

Just look at the scene of Akane's cooking. Normally, scenes like that would probably be interrupted by lots of cutaways, but even that had great animation.

Given how “Akane is a bad cook” is such a critical part of her character that nearly every Ranma fanfic back in the day touched on it, I guess they really wanted to hit the floor running.

4

u/Koganeri 15d ago

Lmao yeah, they really did not waste any time reminding us . It’s honestly one of those little Akane traits that’s so iconic you just expect it to come up at some point. I can totally see why fanfics kept going back to it lol.

13

u/Frontier246 15d ago

The ED was also great. I love that it's continuing the RanKane focus from the previous EDs

It's definitely a cute ED but there's a part of me that misses everyone dancing like in the season 2 ED.

1

u/khanvau 12d ago

I feel like it’s cause this season will focus much more on RanKane. I mean just look at the first episode. We saw Akane from Ranma's perspective and he seems to be stumbling a lot more around her. He's truly in love with Akane, a feeling I hardly got in the original anime where seemed to only help Akane out of obligation.

9

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 15d ago

I assume that S1 and S2 were made in the same production timecycle. Now I can only guess with how well Mappa has done with JJK and CSM lately that it is a boost in their other projects.

Sadly looks like Jigo is the one missing out on this.

1

u/khanvau 12d ago

That makes sense considering there were characters in Season 1 KV that didn’t show up until Season 2.

15

u/GrimMind 15d ago

It's a shame we stopped talking about Sakuga, because Mappa can cook, unlike

Akane. Which is why I like her for Ranma over Queen Shampoo. Who needs kokuhakus? Actions speak louder than words and Akane is so attentive and anxious to see Ranma smile

BUT HER COOKING SUCKS

Which is why Ranma is better than Ryouga for Akane. Ryouga's love might be purer but, at highest purity, it's just simping. Ranma is not blind to Akane's faults and is honest with her. That's why it's so sweet that he finishes the food

THOUGH HER COOKING FUCKING SUCKS

14

u/Adensty https://anilist.co/user/Adensty 15d ago

Ranma is back and well he's gotten stronger because of the constant torture that he's subjected through thanks to Cologne's antics without even realizing it and his rivals (especially Ryoga) are now lagging behind.

After being humiliated by Ranma in front of Akane, Ryoga has no choice but to take Cologne's help so that he can close the gap b/w the two. And if Ryoga is successful in defeating Ranma, Cologne might finally get what she wants.

Akane really put in the effort to ask Ranma about what he'd like to eat after their training a and while I would love to say "It's the thought that counts".

I've never made it before, though.

But, this just is a recipe for disaster.

Ranma who was reluctant after having a taste of Akane's cooking was still going to eat it for Akane's sake. But then Ryoga came and ate some of it and even praised her while at it and now he has to show her that he can eat it too by eating the remaining stuff even if his stomach cannot take it.. Kasumi already knew something like this might happen and so she already gave him the stomach medicine when they were leaving, lol.

12

u/Frontier246 15d ago

Ryoga feeling the power creep from how much he sat out of season 2.

Honestly I think this is 98% on Akane. Her intentions were sincere, but she thought that meant overriding the actual taste of the food and even she herself refused to taste her own cooking after the one time lol.

8

u/olee92 15d ago

Yeah on this part Akane was entirely at fault...

Even tasted her own cooking after the fact and noticed how bad it was and Ranma was still kind enough to say anything bad about it. If you feed someone something like that your first reaction should be to apologize to the other person that it turned out bad rather than getting mad at them for saying... nothing?

Usually not a fan of such unjustified reactions, but they did it really well so the whole thing still turned out nice.

16

u/The_frost__ https://myanimelist.net/profile/The_frost_ 15d ago

Holy shit I was non stop giggling at that Akane cooking section, they even went hard on the animation of her cooking.

3

u/Nesp2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/HardstyleQat 14d ago

Akane's cooking literally sends you into another dimension.

12

u/asianwaste 15d ago

The Amaguri ken arc and Ryoga's Bakusai Tenketsu is around the milestone where I think the series has found its stride. We have Shampoo and Great Granny, we have Happy, and now we have the signature attacks as well as Akane's cooking entering the formula.

Ranma 1/2 is relatively formulaic in which I mean it's usually apply Character A meets, fights, or teams up with Character B or Character A has to partake/endure antics of Character B = episode. The show has a good enough roster to mix it up really well and you have nothing but stellar results. Every now and then you get a new character into the mix but usually they are not as frequent visitors but sometimes their mix into the Ranma formula works well.

11

u/CrimsonGear80 15d ago

MAO ends, Ranma returns!

That was some very expressive animation on Akane a few times this episode.

19

u/professorMaDLib 15d ago edited 14d ago

Ranma my goat is back! It's pretty wild how much funnier I find it over other lesser romcoms.

Shampoo worst girl

8

u/Jacob-C 15d ago

Rumiko Takahashi's humour, slapstick or not, just hits.

9

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 15d ago

Wow, that curry. It even got Durian-ed.

I love how the OP starts with the grainy TV bit, was that the original series opening by any chance?

The ED has nice vibes.

2

u/XsStreamMonsterX 13d ago

was that the original series opening by any chance?

No. OP3 "Omoide ga Ippai" does something like it, but it's not the same.

6

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 15d ago

A fun show to have back. I love that each fall season we have a new season of Ranma from Mappa. I do find it amusing Ranma realizes it is he who got stronger rather than Ryouga, who got weaker. I wonder if this season will be about him catching up to Ranma in being a worthy rival.

10

u/EffAllThatEFFER 15d ago

This sheer increases in the animation quality is kind of hilarious, I can only assume the budget went way up

10

u/Frontier246 15d ago

Ranma is back! With the same Tendou Household antics! And Kunou still trying to two-time Akane and Fem!Ranma until he's blasting off again.

The OP is a classic Ranma OP! Featuring Ranma booted into a TV along with Ryoga where he has to face all manner of characters...we've got Shampoo looking as good-looking as ever! Ukyou! And some new faces! All the while Ranma has to square off against his rivals, the ladies, and his own gender-transformations to be with Akane!

Ryoga's finally done it! He's finally issued a challenge letter to Ranma! Even if he was also entirely late but you have to at least expect Ryoga to be a week or at least a month late to something.

If I had a nickel for every time Ryoga nearly got cooked as a pig I'd have two nickels which is bad for Ryoga...though Shampoo couldn't resist looking at his lil' Ryoga.

Ryoga and Cologne team-up? A union of Ranma antagonists dedicated to bringing him down (Ryoga) and getting him hitched to Shampoo (Cologne)? Too bad Ryoga doesn't need any help...but he DOES need help FINDING THE FRONT DOOR.

But despite his training and best efforts, Ryoga can't defeat Ranma. Ranma's gotten so much more powerful that all his rivals are too slow for him and he can easily manhandle Ryoga while balancing an eel in his hands. And even when he's defeating Rygoa effortlessly, he's still nice enough to cover for him so he doesn't get exposed as P-chan.

Is it nice to see Akane defend him because she thinks Ranma is being a bully? Yes. Does it feel good watching her try to untangle the human pretzel Ryoga while pitying how he can't defeat Ranma? Absolutely not. And it hurts so much Ryoga is willing to team-up with Cologne to learn the Breaking Point technique to take down Ranma.

Akane is joining Ranma and his dad for a trip to the mountains! To train and possibly have some camping romance fun! Count on Nabiki to be calculating enough to want camp pics of Fem!Ranma (who only shows up in a flashback, believe it or not), and count on Kasumi to be considerate enough to prepare stomach medicine in advance. Because now the Saotome boys have to deal with Akane's cooking.

But Akane is truly cooking with love of Ranma in her heart, wanting to make something he would actually enjoy and cook for him like a proper fiance. It just doesn't help that she treats cooking like a training exercise and goes extra on everything to the point where she comes up with a cursed monstrosity of a curry that sends animals packing and no normal human being could stomach.

It was the vinegar! Obviously! But that doesn't mean Ranma has to be so rude as Akane flings rock after increasing rock! One of which hits Ryoga! Who is such an Akane simp that he'll pretend the food isn't destroying his body while he's eating it.

Ranma WAS willing to force himself to eat it for Akane's sake, but now he has to get in a spat with Ryoga AND Akane over it which leads to a challenge between Ranma and Ryoga and Akane jumping to Team Ryoga. And Ranma STILL eats it!

The ED is cute with the cartoonier versions of everyone! No matter their differences, they're united in the shared beauty of a shining star in the sky.

6

u/magnumcyclonex 15d ago

First episode looks a lot more crisp. Great Grandma is back, but that translation / localization "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire" seems dubious to me.

Either way, the main plot point centers on Ryoga's lack of direction and Ranma's Goku moment of becoming stronger, thanks to his constant "training" fights with Great Grandma. Ryoga taking up on that training will likely put him up to par with Ranma hopefully.

Akane sure can cook! Just put everything in! It'll work out. (Although I'm not sure I'd eat durian flavored curry - durian itself is fine and tolerable, but in her first time creation, truly a hard pass).

"I'm so glad to be alive" - famous Ryoga's last words before eating the curry. The same curry that sent half the forest creatures evacuating! But to be fair, he was able to handle it, while Ranma has to force himself to finish the entire pot.

I'd say we're off to a good start with the new OP and ED!

17

u/MisterSolitaire 15d ago

"Chestnuts roasting on an open fire" comes from the Viz translation back in the Nineties. I think it's hilarious the Netflix series is keeping all those old translation quirks.

3

u/Frostbitten_Moose 14d ago

To be fair, some of them are better than the more literal translations anyways. I love Anything Goes Martial Arts, though the School of Indiscriminate Grappling has its own charm.

3

u/XsStreamMonsterX 13d ago

Because a lot of the translations have been around so long that they're effectively canon/official at this point.

2

u/Andreiyutzzzz https://myanimelist.net/profile/Andreiyutzzzz 14d ago

But how would it be translated? When training Ranma literally had to pull out chestnuts roasting on an open fire without burning himself to train his speed lol

5

u/k4r6000 14d ago

Being completely literal, it would be something like Mid-Fire Tianjin Sweet Chestnut Fist.

Tianjin refers to Tianjin, China which is known for its chestnuts.  The basic idea is the same, but the English translation went for the pun that English audiences would know.

3

u/Philiquaz 15d ago

The translation is fairly accurate lol. A more literal translation might be

Imperial Roasted Chestnuts with Fire Fist

But it's genuinely intended to be both ridiculous and serious, after all roasted chestnuts in a fire is how it's learned. But the whole thing is definitely a play on the kung-fu craze.

4

u/duo99dusk 15d ago

Animation was great all around

Wish there was more Ukyo in the OP though

2

u/Frontier246 15d ago

I really like the scene of Shampoo and Ukyou sending Ranma straight at Mousse.

4

u/ExaminationNo9186 15d ago

Those 2 or 3 worded messages on the signs from Panda-Dad crack me up no end.

5

u/Koganeri 15d ago

Man, I love this show Season 3 is already starting off so chaotic. I genuinely don’t know how they keep coming up with this stuff lol. The comedy, the character interactions, all of it is just so fun to watch. I’m just sitting here smiling like an idiot the whole episode. Can’t wait to see where this season goes.

4

u/Andreiyutzzzz https://myanimelist.net/profile/Andreiyutzzzz 14d ago

I like how the fight is "in 1 week" just in time for us to get episode 2 :D. Ranma tried to be nice but it was too late I guess... But Ryoga... Dude.... You got way more guts than most of us, stomaching that AND pretending it's tasty

3

u/Naha- 15d ago

I guess we are getting a full adaptation, I didn't knew S3 was actually a thing until yesterday.

Great episode with super good animation as always.

3

u/Shadowmist909 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Magicmist 15d ago

Between Ranma accidentally launching Kuno out of the classroom, and him folding Ryoga into a pretzel. It looks like all those shenanigans Cologne sent his way last season really worked out in his favor.

However that week of her training Ryoga turns out, I can't wait to see the results.

Akane's cooking giving everyone who ate it a fish-themed vision was hilarious. Not even her best improvising could save that curry!

2

u/Rickud123 15d ago

Yea I’m not sure what changed but the animation quality has made a big leap from last season

Huge glowup in production value this season

2

u/sir_darthcyan https://myanimelist.net/profile/sir_darthcyan 15d ago

Nice, Ranma is back and the show looks even better than before.

Akane’s cooking kinda reminds me of Link’s cooking in Breath of the wild where he created dubious food, but there it was pixalated. Here we see it in pristine clarity (for better or worse 😂).
But respect to everyone, they tried the best to stomach it.

Other than that, OP and ED are great.

2

u/k4r6000 14d ago

Oh how I missed this.  I really hope they keep up their yearly fall schedule.  Get some stability in the anime landscape.

2

u/LoopyChew 14d ago

Yes, it was extremely important for MAPPA to animate Akane’s cooking process. It absolutely required fight-level sakuga in exactly the way the Beast Titan doing anything needs sakuga: to convey the sheer horror of it all.

1

u/b3_yourself 15d ago

Mappa went all out this episode, hopefully it continues!

1

u/Jacob-C 15d ago

We are so back!

1

u/raevnos 15d ago

Who's a more lethal chef? Akane, or Shion from Slime Isekai?

1

u/XsStreamMonsterX 13d ago

Shion has her Master Chef (Cook) skill backing her up that actually makes whatever she cooks taste good.

1

u/gsurfer04 https://anilist.co/user/gsurfer04 14d ago

That scream with the curry really kicking off spooky season.

1

u/raidensnakeezio 14d ago

As usual, the ED animation is a treat to watch.

The animation, storyboarding/compositing, and stills in general were top notch excellent. Doesn't get much better than this for TV-format anime, especially in 2026.

I verbally laughed at Ryoga bending the spoon.

1

u/Frostbitten_Moose 14d ago

Really makes me hate that I can't figure out how to make Netflix stop offering to save me from watching the ED. I like the ED for most of the shows I watch with 'em.

1

u/Pinephant 13d ago

I watch it on an ipad and the ED continues once I tap on a random part of the screen so that the next vid countdown goes away.

Not sure how to do it on TV though.

1

u/Frostbitten_Moose 13d ago

TV has that too, just I want to turn that off so it defaults to letting me watch without interruption

1

u/Pinephant 13d ago

There really should be a function for that.

1

u/Roskal 14d ago

Maybe enduring Akane's cooking will make him even stronger than Ryoga's baba training.

So Ranma had become stronger 'cause of Shampoo's great grandmother's constant torture lol

Akane's movements while she was cooking.. damn, how fluid. But the food still turned out shit xD

Can Ryouga really become stronger under the old Lady's training?

The op and ed are bangers as usual.

Did the animation style slightly change and was Akane reworked slightly characteristically? Something’s felt off when rewatching. I thought I was alone until my wife echoed my thoughts before I told her.

Wow. The person that prepared the disgusting food actually tasted it which is kinda rare. She recognized that it wasn't food and proceeded to poison someone else with it. Considering that they'd been there all day and she prepared so many servings of this poison, was she not intending to eat at any point? What did she eat and where did all of these ingredients come from? I hope she gets stronger from this training arc. Funny for this to be happening in the opening episode. I'd recently been thinking about how often ominous looking food is served in anime and wondered how they could have ever put it forward.

Pi-chan about to get a super buff. I hope it comes with increased speed.

All the martial arts really reminds me of how much I want a History's Mightiest Disciple anime reboot announcement.

The music changing while Akane was cooking cracked me up to no end. So glad Ranma is back, this episode came in swinging with the jokes.

Usually it only shows the end result when it's a character bad at cooking but this episode really showed the bad decisions and ingredient choices that the character makes to create it and surprisingly nicely animated! I was stunned watching Akane's process.
