This is such a depressing episode, man. I felt so bad for Raye's fiancé watching this.

Given Light kills people pretty quickly it's a bit odd that the highest risk person so far to his identity is given a 48 hour window to die. He does indeed write that she writes the suicide note/decides on the suicide at 1:15pm, but gives her 48 hours to follow through with it. Given it hasn’t shown that the person goes into a trance for the full duration, seems like quite a risk to make with the biggest cog in his wheel.

Pretty good episode though - really exciting having them try and figure out how to get her name without sacrificing half his life span. They just fly by, don’t they.

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 7d ago

Well, the longer the timeframe, the less risk of her being tied back to him, and as their final conversation showed, as soon as it triggered, she ceased being a threat. It does kind of make you wonder how he would know it would work that way, though. Seems like something that would be hard to test with the limited information that can be obtained from prisoner deaths.

1

u/Second_Cour 7d ago

Yeah exactly my qualm. This was the first time he even revealed his identity with a prolonged period before death so it seems like an insane gamble to take and assume that she can't talk to anyone about it and that no one would find her and ask speak to her in between the suicide determination and final death

1

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

This is probably the most suspenseful episode yet. It really puts into perspective that Light is really playing with fire.

I'm sad to see "Maki" be gone. I was hoping she'd stick around for a little bit more.

2

u/Second_Cour 7d ago

I dunno I didn't find her to be that compelling a character and didn't have much personality so it was clear she was positioned as a write off. Her scenario and background was indeed interesting though

1

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

I thought she was compelling because she didn't instantly believe Light. She is the closest person we've seen to figuring him out.

Thoughts on Light making it seem like the death of her fiancé drove her to commit suicide?

Thoughts on Ryuk laughing like a madman?

Thoughts on "Maki" continuing to want to head to police headquarters?

Thoughts on Light saying "Maki" has gotta have a driver's license or some personal identification on her somewhere because she's a woman?

Thoughts on L getting the police officers to use fake IDs?

Thoughts on Light telling "Maki" she can't contact anyone at the task force directly?

What are your thoughts on Maki asking Light how does he know so much about the Kira case if it's supposed to be top secret?

Thoughts on Light claiming to be a member of the task force brought on board with his father to work on the investigation?

Thoughts on "Maki" feeling L would talk to her because she used to be a member of the task force?

What are your thoughts on "Maki" deciding to trust Light because he reminds her of L?

Thoughts on "Maki" handing Light her identification?

Thoughts on the use of snow at the end of the episode?

What are your thoughts on Light revealing to "Maki" that he is investigating fact Kira?

Thoughts on all the life draining from the face of "Maki"?

What are your thoughts on the episode ending with "Maki" walking to the gallows?

Watching Dubbed

Oh no, Light’s gonna kill this nice lady.

Light has already veered off his mission statement of punishing the wicked and we’re not even halfway into this show.

I know I keep bringing this up but it really is surprising how Light has no moral introspection about his actions. He truly believes everything he does is just.

The way L holds his cellphone is so funny.

It does feel good to see Light’s plan to kill this woman fail. I love hearing Ryuk laugh at him.

I was not expecting Watari to look like an old man underneath his weird trench coat.

This woman’s a very formidable rival for Light. I hope she’s able to succeed.

“She’s a woman after all.” - Light Yagami. On top of being a serial killer he’s also mildly sexist.

On one hand, I don’t like the idea of cops having fake IDs. On the other hand, probably smart when dealing with Light.

Watching Light talk to this lady is so tense. I’m so worried she’s gonna fall for Light’s lies.

Oh dammit, she trusts Light now.

The ending of the episode with Naomi’s implied suicide is really haunting.

I know I keep saying this every time Light kills someone but this feels like the most unambiguously bad thing Light has done. And Light truly believes that him causing Naomi’s death is just and necessary. It really shows how fargone Light’s sense of morality is by now.

Narcissism is a hell of a drug.

1

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

That it certainly is

2

Oh no, Light’s gonna kill this nice lady.

No kidding

I know I keep bringing this up but it really is surprising how Light has no moral introspection about his actions. He truly believes everything he does is just.

He is delusional

The way L holds his cellphone is so funny.

I agree

It does feel good to see Light’s plan to kill this woman fail. I love hearing Ryuk laugh at him.

All Ryuk needs is popcorn to go along with his apples.

I was not expecting Watari to look like an old man underneath his weird trench coat.

He looks like Alfred from Batman

This woman’s a very formidable rival for Light. I hope she’s able to succeed.

About that...

“She’s a woman after all.” - Light Yagami. On top of being a serial killer he’s also mildly sexist.

I was shocked when I heard him say that

On one hand, I don’t like the idea of cops having fake IDs. On the other hand, probably smart when dealing with Light.

They have no choice in this case. Light can kill you if he gets ahold of your name.

Watching Light talk to this lady is so tense. I’m so worried she’s gonna fall for Light’s lies.

She held out for so long

Oh dammit, she trusts Light now.

Damn it

The ending of the episode with Naomi’s implied suicide is really haunting.

Such a depressing ending

I know I keep saying this every time Light kills someone but this feels like the most unambiguously bad thing Light has done. And Light truly believes that him causing Naomi’s death is just and necessary. It really shows how fargone Light’s sense of morality is by now.

He took joy in seeing this woman kill herself. That is so twisted.

2

u/AgentOfACROSS 7d ago

Such a depressing ending

The ending also seems to imply that Naomi's mind was still kind of aware of what she was doing but had no way of stopping it which is honestly pretty terrifying. At least when light makes his victims die in an accident or by a heart attack they don't know it's coming.

1

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

She lost the will to live, essentially

Thoughts on Ryuk laughing like a madman?

I love it, Ryuk's got a great laugh

Thoughts on Light saying "Maki" has gotta have a driver's license or some personal identification on her somewhere because she's a woman?

It was very random for Light to be mildly sexist like that

Thoughts on L getting the police officers to use fake IDs?

Probably a smart move for him

What are your thoughts on "Maki" deciding to trust Light because he reminds her of L?

It's really painful to watch this

Thoughts on the use of snow at the end of the episode?

I liked it, very good visual

Thoughts on all the life draining from the face of "Maki"?

It hated watching Light do this to her

What are your thoughts on the episode ending with "Maki" walking to the gallows?

Very haunting visual

1

Thoughts on Ryuk laughing like a madman?

I love it, Ryuk's got a great laugh

I laugh just hearing him laugh

Thoughts on Light saying "Maki" has gotta have a driver's license or some personal identification on her somewhere because she's a woman?

It was very random for Light to be mildly sexist like that

I laughed because it felt so abrupt

Thoughts on L getting the police officers to use fake IDs?

Probably a smart move for him

I would say so

What are your thoughts on "Maki" deciding to trust Light because he reminds her of L?

It's really painful to watch this

Especially earlier when L said they're similar to each other. Very harsh in hindsight.

Thoughts on the use of snow at the end of the episode?

I liked it, very good visual

The end of the episode is probably the best sequence the entire show so far.

Thoughts on all the life draining from the face of "Maki"?

It hated watching Light do this to her

The thing is he doesn't seem to even care.

What are your thoughts on the episode ending with "Maki" walking to the gallows?

Very haunting visual

Especially juxtaposed with the snow. It's so chilling.

every time Naomi kills someone

Oh that Naomi - I always knew she was a serial killer in hiding!

2

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

She should've killed Kira when she had the chance...

2

u/Hartzilla2007 7d ago

First Timer

And for once Light is on the backfoot having to wing it on getting a win. Well makes it clear he's still a threat even if he doesn't have time to plan things out but only if he has enough time after one of his plans goes sideways to bullshit his way to fixing it. Yeah L giving the fake badges and belt buckles to the taskforce is smart given their dealing with a guy who if he gets a name and a face will kill you. Also Light is a complete bastard at this point.

1

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

The thing is, Light’s idea of eliminating criminals isn't a bad idea in theory. But he got paranoid and started prioritizing not getting caught.

There was no reason to mess with Raye other than his own hubris. And then suddenly it created this chain of events.

2

u/Ludibrium__34 7d ago

Its also the 20th anniversary of Black Lagoon, in which the VA of Light (Brad Swaile) voices the mc too

That is very neat

first time watcher

What are your thoughts on Ms. Maki not being her real name and that she used an alias?

she's hella smart

What are your thoughts on Light killing "Maki" after finding out her real name?

oh for FUCKS sake if she dies im actually so pissed she's such an interesting character

What are your thoughts on a police investigator walking past Light as he writes down the real name of "Maki"?

poetic? i get what they're going for here, she literally misses the chance to spill the beans, but personally i don't think it's that tragically framed

---

Im calling it Ryuk is laughing cuz it's not her real name

Ryuk laughing is so funny LOL

Is that Alfred working for L LOL

They're just walking in silence

He's stalking her at this point

these officers gonna die one by one somehow

She's giving him the side eye of glaring death

he's still following her lol how is he not sused

I like how Ryuk just laughs, I bet he can see that she doesn't buy Lights bs

Light is so bs

Ryuk is laughing cuz he knows she's not buying his bullshit

No fucking way she dies like this

I'll be so fucking mad

2

u/Holofan4life 6d ago

I thought the same thing that that was Alfred lol

I know last episode you were guessing that "Maki" defeats Light. I don't think that's happening, but I think this is perhaps foreshadowing of Light being beaten by someone other than L. L has been chasing Light since literally episode 2. It would almost lack oomph if Light was just defeated by him and that's that.

2

u/ItalianQuagsire 6d ago

imagine if they assemble the entire squad like the avengers to take Light down

though that might take away from L's spotlight

2

u/Holofan4life 6d ago

I'll go on record and predict someone outside the police investigation will probably take Light down.

shes not dead no way please

Thoughts on Ryuk laughing like a madman?

the more i watch the more i like the guy LOL

Thoughts on "Maki" continuing to want to head to police headquarters?

she has to be sus of him by now right

What are your thoughts on Maki asking Light how does he know so much about the Kira case if it's supposed to be top secret?

im surprised she's buying it because Light is acting pretty desperate

What are your thoughts on "Maki" deciding to trust Light because he reminds her of L?

im still getting fucked up by both their names being L, Light and Kira

Thoughts on "Maki" handing Light her identification?

it's fake it's fake it's fake

What are your thoughts on Light revealing to "Maki" that he is investigating fact Kira?

kinda cool but imagine it was fake and she just walked off faking that she's gonna die, right? RIGHT?!

Thoughts on all the life draining from the face of "Maki"?

fake (pls let it be fake)

What are your thoughts on the episode ending with "Maki" walking to the gallows?

STOPPP

I dunno Jim

He is a special breed of insanity

Thoughts on "Maki" continuing to want to head to police headquarters?

she has to be sus of him by now right

I'd say she is

What are your thoughts on Maki asking Light how does he know so much about the Kira case if it's supposed to be top secret?

Thoughts on Light claiming to be a member of the task force brought on board with his father to work on the investigation?

im surprised she's buying it because Light is acting pretty desperate

I do like they foreshadowed the conclusion of this episode by having L in the previous episode talk about how similar he and Light are.

What are your thoughts on "Maki" deciding to trust Light because he reminds her of L?

im still getting fucked up by both their names being L, Light and Kira

Would the name Bob do you any better?

Thoughts on "Maki" handing Light her identification?

it's fake it's fake it's fake

Copium in full effect

What are your thoughts on Light revealing to "Maki" that he is investigating fact Kira?

kinda cool but imagine it was fake and she just walked off faking that she's gonna die, right? RIGHT?!

Imagine if she had a fake ID.

And again, I think L giving the task force fake IDs is meant to foreshadow what happens here. If "Maki" hadn't left the task force, she'd probably not be in this situation. It's tragic irony.

Thoughts on all the life draining from the face of "Maki"?

fake (pls let it be fake)

Say it ain't so, as Weezer once sang

What are your thoughts on the episode ending with "Maki" walking to the gallows?

STOPPP

She'll hang in there

He is a special breed of insanity

so insane that he's actually just sane in comaprison to the main 2

What are your thoughts on "Maki" deciding to trust Light because he reminds her of L?

Would the name Bob do you any better?

i will find you, bob, and i will end you for justice

2

I know some people who can't function without their coffee. It's kinda a similar thing.

If L really wanted to troll Light, he should've used a common name, like John Smith.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 20th anniversary rewatch of Death Note.

Names need not be written down.

Very few anime transend the medium it is a part of. One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Speed Racer. Those are really the four where even non anime fans know of it. I would argue there was a point in time where Death Note was like this as well where even if you weren’t an anime fan, you knew what Death Note was.

I of course have experienced Death Note through various memes and the like. I even remember checking out a Treehouse of Horror episode of The Simpsons specifically because they parodied Death Note, and I’m not even a modern Simpsons watcher. But despite being familiar with the show for the better part of almost 15 years, I’ve never actually seen Death Note. It’s just one of those things that escaped me.

I’ve heard Death Note is notorious for having a dip in quality. That with the conclusion of part 1, the show isn’t as good as when it started. This rewatch is less a matter of deciding if the show is good or not and more is part 2 really as bad as it reputation suggests. My prediction will be no but it’ll be a show that goes from 9 out of 10 to 8 out of 10.

Death Note was at one point arguably the most mainstream anime in the entire world. And so it’s time we revisit what I’m sure got many people into anime.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way. Because potato chips.

I really don't want to go into work today.

I noticed we don't do recaps anymore.

Light still walking with Maki

He has to eliminate her

But until then, he has to play with her emotions.

Writing down the details of the bus hijacking.

Damn, making it seem like the death of her fiancé drove her to commit suicide. That's cold.

Why is Ryuk laughing like that?

Back with L and the police officers.

He doesn't think Kira is among us.

Not very sus

Light and Maki still walking

Huh? Maki's not dying?

She totally knows, doesn't she?

Light wonders why isn't she dying.

And why is Ryuk laughing?

An alias mayhaps?

Hey, it's Alfred

Or the guy from Sakamoto Days. Your pick.

New police IDs

Light knows now she's being overly cautious.

And now she's heading back

See, this is why you should've accepted Ryuk's eyes, Light.

"She's gotta have a driver's license or some personal identification on her somewhere. She's a woman, after all."

What does that mean?

Light suddenly feels his back against the wall.

And Ryuk mentions the deal he proposed in past episodes.

He seems rather reluctant

Ooh, fake IDs

That's smart

Ryuzaki will trace their whereabouts.

"Maki" walking away

Light got five minutes before she heads to police headquarters.

Light still following her

Totally not suspicious, Light

Only three minutes left

Light tells her she can't contact anyone at the task force directly.

Members can't be identified

Police simply won't allow it

"If this is supposed to be a secret, then how do you know so much?"

Oh damn. She got his ass.

He reveals he's a member of the task force.

Brought on board with his father to work on the investigation.

Light's eyes don't seem to match with his body language.

"Maki" is still gonna go to the task force headquarters.

I really like her a lot

Light still trying to reason with her.

He says it's impossible to meet with L.

"I think there's a chance he'll meet with me."

Was an FBI agent three months ago.

Light trying to use this to his advantage.

"Maki" says that Light reminds her of L. That makes her want to trust him.

Light proposes she work on this case with him.

Light makes it sound like it's so easy.

Someone from the task force heading this way.

Light really buttering her up

Now she wants to investigate this case with him.

Ryuk finds this whole thing hilarious.

Is she gonna give him some identification?

He's reaching for it

It's snowing now

Who brings an umbrella for snow?

Light has the driver's license

He writes her name down

Just as a police task force official walks past them.

Light reveals he is Kira

And she starts to walk away

The life on her face has been drained away.

And she ends up killing herself, walking to the gallows.

That was a depressing ending

Overall, this was a great episode. It was cool to see Light be at a disadvantage for a change. It was so disheartening to see "Maki" end up dying when it felt like she was so close to piecing things together. Even more so than the people working on the case. I really like the scene where Light reveals he is Kira and the reality sets in for "Maki" on what just happened. She fell right into his trap and paid the price for it. That of the first seven episodes is the best scene we've seen so far.

I wonder if the investigator who was around will end up figuring out that was Raye's fiancé. And he was the last to see her before she killed herself. I could see that getting back to Light and him having to figure out who that person is. That I predict will be the next part of the show.

This was my favorite episode of the show so far. It had a great mix of excitement, thrills, and chills. Ryuk in particular was highly entertaining with how much he was enjoying things. I'm waiting with anticipation to see where this leads us.

1

u/Second_Cour 7d ago

I thought that the purpose of showing the detective walking back to the precinct was to show how close Light came to being discovered (if she made it back there, she may have bumped into him). I doubt it's to suggest that he noticed the two of them: would make no sense, story-wise unless we are about to end the show next episode.

PS Unrelated - have you watched Oshi No Ko? I think you might like it. I might come across as someone who doesn't feel much emotion (from the FruBa watch haha), but from Episode 1 (well, the 1hr 20min long Ep 1) I felt more emotion than from any anime.

1

u/Holofan4life 7d ago

Yeah, true. He's definitely cutting it close.

I have seen Oshi no Ko. It is a phenomenal series.

1

u/Holofan4life 7d ago
