That is indeed a big oden ingredient.

While you're getting the police, might as well hand in a certain taiyaki thief too.

Is this a thing where the person likes to tease the person they secretly have a crush on?

Makoto's design kind of reminds me of Asuka from Evangelion.

Fast approval. If you need a bed, just kick Yuuichi out. He'll be fine sleeping on the porch in the cold.

The frog lives through the plushy and pajamas.

The konjac joke is so good in this version.

The way she's hanging onto the fridge door reminds me of those sleep demons that crawl along the walls and ceilings.

Hey, the girl that dropped the bag is out in the cold. I hope she doesn't get sick being out there for so long. Oh, she already is. I'm sure standing in the freezing snow is great for getting over colds.

Of course a girl you just met isn't going to tell you her secrets.

Shiori has my favorite fashion out of all the girls. Sayuri has the best hair.

Making Nayuki wait again. Shame on you.

Uguu has much better glomping game in this version.

Yuuichi's face when he's teasing Uguu about her saying Uguu was so funny.

That taiyaki eating face on Uguu is adorable.

She's looking for her common sense that she lost years ago.

Japanese crepe shops are the best.

How do you not know what a cell phone is?

Okay, that collision looked painful. Adorable run up, though.

Makoto, marry Yuuichi and you can be family too!

Mai slashing with a sword! So cool! Much wow!

What are your thoughts on Makoto Sawatari?

I find her fun and adorable and the prank wars are fun.

You aren't the first person to mention Makoto looking like Asuka. Here's hoping her mother is more sound than Asuka's mom.

At least the frog motif lives on in some degree.

Thoughts on Yuuichi wanting to call the cops on Makoto?

Thoughts on Makoto referring to Yuuichi as guidepost?

Thoughts on Yuuichi wanting to call Makoto Kyoko?

Thoughts on Ayu not knowing what a cell phone is?

What are your thoughts on us ending on someone yielding a sword on school property?

Thoughts on Yuuichi wanting to call the cops on Makoto?

Um... missing child is serious business.

Thoughts on Makoto referring to Yuuichi as guidepost?

She's the only person she knows she should know. So the best chance to recover memories.

Thoughts on Yuuichi wanting to call Makoto Kyoko?

It's war. Nothing is sacred. (Within legal limits of course.)

Thoughts on Ayu not knowing what a cell phone is?

Super sheltered. This takes place in the late 90s or early 2000s so cell phones weren't as ubiquitous as they are now so it's possible. But at the same time, they've existed in some form since the 70s and those infamous brick phones were seen in TV and movies from the 80s. So... super sheltered.

What are your thoughts on us ending on someone yielding a sword on school property?

It's Japan... Also depends on if it's a blunt replica or a real sword.

That it is

Thoughts on Makoto referring to Yuuichi as guidepost?

She's the only person she knows she should know. So the best chance to recover memories.

I wonder what does she mean

Thoughts on Yuuichi wanting to call Makoto Kyoko?

It's war. Nothing is sacred. (Within legal limits of course.)

It feels weird because the mother in Fruits Basket is named Kyoko.

Ayu be living under a rock

What are your thoughts on us ending on someone yielding a sword on school property?

It's Japan... Also depends on if it's a blunt replica or a real sword.

Can you imagine if it was an authentic sword? Collectors everywhere might be out for blood.

First Timer

I’m still trying to figure out what this narration means exactly

Nice of Nayuki to not immediately assume the worst when Yuichi brings home a strange girl. I’m so used to other anime characters immediately assuming the worst in this type of situation.

Her waking up at the mention of food is really funny.

Seems this girl has a healthy appetite.

She’s also allegedly an amnesiac. That seems important.

She has a photobooth picture all by herself. Reminds me of Love Hina.

Yuichi has a point. They should probably tell the police about this girl.

Yuichi is taking being declared this girl’s nemesis rather well.

Why does every girl Yuichi meet happen to be unhinged?

Nayuki and her mom are taking having this girl around pretty well.

She does not take well to being named by someone else.

Was that a block of tofu he dropped down her back?

I love this girl’s energy. She’s really funny.

This whole conversation Yuichi has with Shiori is pretty interesting. I don’t have too much to add here.

Oh hey it’s Mai and Sayuri again.

Oh hey, Ayu’s here too. She’s pretty high energy, as usual.

Ayu’s whole dynamic with Yuichi is pretty funny.

Ayu lost something important but can’t remember what it is. Weird.

Memories seem to be an important theme of the show.

Ayu has no idea what a cellphone is. I guess for a teenager in 2006 that isn’t completely unrealistic.

I guess amnesia girl is just living here now.

Her name is Makoto. Hopefully she can remember something else about herself too.

Not sure what that scene at the very end means.

Question of the Day:

What are your thoughts on Makoto Sawatari?

She's certainly a bit a strange but also very funny

I’m still trying to figure out what this narration means exactly

It's very vague

Nice of Nayuki to not immediately assume the worst when Yuichi brings home a strange girl. I’m so used to other anime characters immediately assuming the worst in this type of situation.

It's nice to have no misunderstandings

Her waking up at the mention of food is really funny.

She knows her vices

Seems this girl has a healthy appetite.

Good for her

She’s also allegedly an amnesiac. That seems important.

Probably

She has a photobooth picture all by herself. Reminds me of Love Hina.

What character was that, again?

Yuichi has a point. They should probably tell the police about this girl.

But he was definitely saying that to be a dick.

Yuichi is taking being declared this girl’s nemesis rather well.

It is very over the top

Why does every girl Yuichi meet happen to be unhinged?

Is Ayu unhinged? I guess so.

Nayuki and her mom are taking having this girl around pretty well.

Indeed they are

She does not take well to being named by someone else.

Why would she not? She isn't a pet...

Was that a block of tofu he dropped down her back?

They did a similar thing in a Toradora episode.

I love this girl’s energy. She’s really funny.

She has great gremlin energy. Like Michiru from Air.

This whole conversation Yuichi has with Shiori is pretty interesting. I don’t have too much to add here.

These episodes have had less of a plot and more one long seed planting. I don't necessarily hate it and I think we don't get enough anime like this nowadays.

Oh hey it’s Mai and Sayuri again.

Oh hey, Ayu’s here too. She’s pretty high energy, as usual.

More seed planting

Ayu’s whole dynamic with Yuichi is pretty funny.

I like that Yuuichi loves messing with Ayu. I think Yuuichi's interactions with Ayu is when Yuuichi as a character shines.

Ayu lost something important but can’t remember what it is. Weird.

Something is afoot

Memories seem to be an important theme of the show.

Kinda like Fruits Basket but more overt.

Ayu has no idea what a cellphone is. I guess for a teenager in 2006 that isn’t completely unrealistic.

Also, the VN originally came out in 1999.

I guess 2006 doesn't make it too dated because the iPhone came out in 2007.

I guess amnesia girl is just living here now.

A bit auspicious to let the girl live with the guy she has it out for.

Her name is Makoto. Hopefully she can remember something else about herself too.

Here's hoping

Not sure what that scene at the very end means.

More seed planting I suppose

Question of the Day:

What are your thoughts on Makoto Sawatari?

She's certainly a bit a strange but also very funny

I think she brings this element of chaos to the show that makes the series more fun.

Thoughts on Makoto saying she holds a grudge against Yuuichi?

Hopefully she remembers why she has a grudge

Thoughts on Yuuichi wanting to call the cops on Makoto?

He does have a bit of a point. The police would probably know how to handle an amnesiac better than him

What are your thoughts on Makoto living with Yuuichi and everyone for the time being?

I guess everyone's just chill with this

Thoughts on Shiori saying she's a student at the school Yuuichi is attending but she can't be there due to an illness?

I'm sure she'll be important later

Thoughts on Yuuichi forgetting about Nayuki again?

He's gotta stop doing that

Thoughts on Ayu not knowing what a cell phone is?

I guess that made more sense in the visual novel since it was 1999

What are your thoughts on us ending on someone wielding a sword on school property?

I'm gonna assume that's Mai but I'm not sure

Thoughts on Makoto saying she holds a grudge against Yuuichi?

Hopefully she remembers why she has a grudge

That seems like a nice important detail

Thoughts on Yuuichi wanting to call the cops on Makoto?

He does have a bit of a point. The police would probably know how to handle an amnesiac better than him

One would think

What are your thoughts on Makoto living with Yuuichi and everyone for the time being?

I guess everyone's just chill with this

Surprisingly so

Thoughts on Shiori saying she's a student at the school Yuuichi is attending but she can't be there due to an illness?

I'm sure she'll be important later

More than likely

Thoughts on Yuuichi forgetting about Nayuki again?

He's gotta stop doing that

For real

Thoughts on Ayu not knowing what a cell phone is?

I guess that made more sense in the visual novel since it was 1999

Does Yuuichi have a cell phone? I don't think so.

What are your thoughts on us ending on someone wielding a sword on school property?

I'm gonna assume that's Mai but I'm not sure

I guess we'll find out

Uguu First Timer

City is covered in snow again despite it looking like it was melting in the last episode.

The school's size and lobby area sort of remind me of the school in Angel Beats (another Jun Maeda story).

Swords are in this? Weird.

1

u/Holofan4life 10d ago

Swords are pretty cool. It being in this has piqued my interest.

First timer

Not sure why, Satsumura Kyoko sounds like a real name, but maybe with a different kanji instead of the ones that mean "kill" and "evil". Apparently the 2002 version uses a different name of "Usoo Tsukiko" when Yuuichi tries to give Makoto a temporary name before the household finds out about her real name.

So Yuuichi meets Shiori again, now in front of the school, and she's saying that she's looking for someone but she doesn't wanna tell who is it to Yuuichi, or her surname is. And then we see Yuuichi meeting Ayu once more, and she is also looking for something. Seems like this is a recurring theme for the characters, they seem to be losing something close to them. Makoto losing her memory, Yuuichi losing her memory of his time in the city, Ayu losing her memory of something, and Shiori wanting to look for someone she hasn't met for a long time. And what the hell is that final scene?

QOTD: Makoto's quite an odd one, let's see how she develops as time goes.

2

u/Holofan4life 10d ago

The thing to wonder is how this all relates to Yuuichi. Like, why are all these girls relaying their problems through him?

2

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 10d ago

It seems like Yuuichi is connected to them, they probably interacted with him when he was in the city 7 years ago, since Ayu and Makoto remembered their time with Yuuichi.

1

u/Holofan4life 10d ago

But what must've happened 7 years ago for that to keep cropping up?

First-timer for the 2006 series, subbed

QOTD

She is simply best girl. Her annoying imouto energy always brings a smile to my face. The way she makes herself at home in the household is also something to behold. She already has mum on her side so no worries there. Fangservice is also very much appreciated. In the 2006 series even more than in the old one she reminds me a lot of Evangelion's Asuka which is just...hnnnnnnghh. Lovely all around.

More generally speaking the mysteries are ramping up this episode and Yuuichi directly adresses this so I'm very curious how much more we will learn this time around.

Now on to Mai!

2

u/Holofan4life 10d ago

What I like about Makoto is that she actually seems like a nice girl. It's just Yuuichi wronged her in some way. Her continuing to mess with him really highlights that she carries some vendetta.

So far, this adaptation is like the beginning of the 2002 anime in how the early episodes were all about seed planting and setting the stage. But this feels less annoying because we have a whole 9 other episodes to work with. This adaptation can afford to do the whole less is more thing.

u/Holofan4life 11d ago

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 20th/25th anniversary rewatch of Kanon.

Uguu!

This is a continuation of the Air rewatch and that series celebrating its 20th anniversary last year. Kanon is more known than Air, but obviously not as well known as Clannad, all three of which are visual novels made by Key.

For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the 2002 series as well as the 2006 series. The 2006 series is considered the better of the two series, but who else is gonna do a rewatch of 2002 Kanon? I’ve actually never seen anything of Kanon so this gives me the chance of contrast them. I know there’s a girl who says Uguu, but other than that I’m going in completely blind.

Maybe this will all lead to the Clannad 20th anniversary rewatch. Don’t hold me on that.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the sub, by the way.

I need to start getting serious if I really want to plan ahead.

Yuuichi carrying Makoto back

"Does this look like food to you?"

Yes?

Makoto being laid to rest

Literally

Yuuichi, don't scream in a sick person's face.

Time to eat

Doesn't remember who she is because of amnesia.

All she knows is she has a grudge against him.

Took a picture because all the girls were doing it.

Yuuichi wants to call the cops, which lol.

Makoto refers to Yuuichi as guidepost.

I do like Makoto and Yuuichi's antics together.

And so Makoto is going to be live here.

Akiko is going to the police station tomorrow to investigate.

Yuuichi gets slapped for wanting to name her Kyoko.

I think Kyoko is a cute name :c

Nighttime

Someone walking

It's Makoto

What's she up to?

She is rummaging through the fridge.

And Yuuichi decides to get some revenge on her.

Now everyone is up

At least this allows Akiko to make some food for Makoto, much to Yuuichi's chagrin.

At school now

Yuuichi wonders if something happened 7 years ago.

A mysterious girl

No one knows her

Yuuichi gonna look for her and see what is going on.

At least she seems friendly

She claims she is a student here.

Haven't been feeling well so she's absent.

Says the girl walking in the heavy snow with light clothing.

She snuck out to meet someone

Doesn't really know much about the person, but she's met them before.

At least it stopped snowing

Yuuichi and the girl walking

I believe she is named Kaori

No, wait, it's Shiori, my bad.

Kaori is the other girl

And Shiori won't revealed her last name.

Nayuki mad because she was waiting on Yuuichi.

Hey, Mai and Sayuri

I like these two

They greet Nayuki and Yuuichi and then they head off.

Nayuki tells Yuuichi their names

Yuuichi being glomped by Ayu

Uguu counter: 21

Normal. Right...

Uguu counter: 22

Uguu counter: 23

I love Yuuichi making fun of her Uguus. It's so good.

An important objective today

Looking for something

Something very, very valuable

But she doesn't remember what she dropped.

Well, that's a problem

Looking for it now

But first, crepes

Uguu counter: 24

Nowhere to be found

Yuuichi remarks the places she frequents are food related.

Uguu counter: 25

She thanks Yuuichi for today even if she wasn't able to find what she was after.

She also learned what a cell phone is.

I really like the music here

Yuuichi walking back now

And Makoto collides with him

Oh, Makoto...

And she confirms that her name is Makoto.

Makoto gonna bathe first

We get some more back and forth between Yuuichi and Makoto.

Meanwhile, someone at school

They slash something with a sword.

Overall, this was a decent episode. We establish some characters like Makoto and Shiori. And the ending was a good little hook for the next episode. The show just has so much more energy compared to its 2002 counterpart. I think it's because Yuuichi is more engaging as a character and is more sassy that he was in the previous anime. I wouldn't consider him a douche, but he has smartass tendencies.

So far, the 2006 anime has stayed pretty consistent with what we saw in the 2002 version. But with better animation and crisper dialogue, things are moving at a much brisker pace.

This was probably my favorite episode so far and I'm excited to see what comes next. I'm also waiting to see what new avenues this adaptation takes us.
