iPhone Apple Retail Staff Told to Warn Against iPhone Duo Walk-In Purchases

> discourage customers without pre-orders from coming in
Yet when I did my preorder, my only option was delivery. I couldn’t choose a store within 100 miles for pick up

u/TootieSummers 4h ago edited 3h ago
Just check again (on the app) on release day a few hours before the stores open. Inventory will be updated and if there are any available, you’ll be able to snag one.
Edit: added that you’re just checking the store online so no one thinks I’m advocating bothering employees on a launch day
44
u/paranoia2mb 4h ago
Their site specifically says to check back for in-store availability the day after launch (10/24). Not so sure this method is going to work this time around.
16
u/HillarysFloppyChode 4h ago
It’s in small blue letters on the check out page, put it in big letters on the store home page otherwise few people are going to read it.
8
u/TootieSummers 3h ago
It bothers no employee to still check on the app on release day. It’s always worth a shot even if this is the first time it doesn’t work.
22
u/Ashkir 4h ago
If it shows up on inventory do you just repurchase it, get it, then cancel your other order?
12
u/Gon_Snow 4h ago
Essentially yes
10
u/Ashkir 2h ago edited 2h ago
My friend just canceled his november 16th delivery date -.- because he's confident he'll get it in store on the first week. Wow. Lol. I was like wait until you have it before you canceled but too late

u/Gon_Snow 2h ago
November 16?
5
u/Ashkir 2h ago
yep November 16th ;lol

u/Ashkir 4h ago
I'll give it a shot! Shame my app crashed and pushed me to December 8th
I did get a call from Apple Executive relations asking me to describe the issue with my app in detail too. Wonder if that'd lead anywhere.
6
u/HillarysFloppyChode 4h ago
It doesn’t, I got one too within minutes of emailing them, in my case I got an Apple authorization charge, then it kicked me out to the place order page. ER claimed this was “normal behavior” and they couldn’t help anyway, aside from checking the app for “regular updates”.
When I asked about scalpers they wouldn’t directly say, and instead claimed that even Apple Corporate employees had trouble getting one.
9
u/DrummerDKS 4h ago
Fun fact, their internal purchase system to purchase with their discount couldn’t be pre-loaded like the public facing one. So it was easier for non-employees to make a purchase
4
u/HillarysFloppyChode 4h ago
By design or from a software failure?
6
u/DrummerDKS 4h ago
By design, their internal store can’t save a bag the same way external can.
2
u/HillarysFloppyChode 3h ago
That makes sense, I think what I found the most odd was the last time I had an issue with Apple and had to reach out to the ER team (I had constant QC issues with a launch day 15 Pro and the Apple store kinda gave up on it), they just did it over email. This time they would only talk by phone call.

u/HillarysFloppyChode 4h ago
I’ll check on release and the 24th, and 25th. I’m curious if I can buy for in store pickup with my carrier promo, without being charged a down payment before cancelling my T-Mobile pre order.
The T-Mobile pre-order isn’t supposed to ship until the 28th at the earliest.
I find it highly suspect that eBay is currently flooded with day 1 orders, but carriers took hours to slip the same way Apple did, who had more allocations. My guess is Apple got hounded by scalpers, while carriers that require accounts to buy from couldn’t be scalped. If people complain enough Apple may actually do something about those orders, which would push up inventory.
2
u/katmndoo 4h ago
Depends on location probably. In the Portland area, it usually takes weeks before a pickup is available.
2
u/IllButterscotch5964 4h ago
Yep. I’ve always gotten new iPhones on release day without preordering. I did it for the 18 pro max. Luckily I have an Apple Store relatively close.
1
7
u/TheJohnny346 4h ago
In store pickup sold out within 2-3 minutes. I got in after a minute and all the pickup times from 8-9am were completely gone. Ended up picking an early 9am time before it got denied and then I switched over to late 9am and that one finally went through. I got my confirmation email at 5:01 and by 5:02-03 I saw that in store pickup was gone everywhere.
1
u/provider305 3h ago
I was refreshing like crazy and had my preorder saved and there was no pickup available in any city in Florida I searched (Orlando, Jacksonville, Tampa, Miami). I probably checked Orlando while it was still :01
•
u/blacksoxing 1h ago
It’s wild I started at 4 mins past the hour and somehow everyone in my metro went “that shit is mine for pickup”
I’m hoping I can just pick up like on the following Tuesday vs Nov 20-30
•
u/get-blessed 1h ago
As an apple retail employee no the fuck we were not warned against walk-ins, this is complete bullshit lmao 🤣

u/littlebiped 5h ago edited 5h ago
They straight up just cancelled the launch in my country lol. The Apple Authorised Resellers all pulled the plug on pre-orders the morning they were supposed to go live yesterday and today when I called two of them they said the launch on Friday has been delayed because there isn’t any stock.
Worth nothing that every iPhone since the X has been day and date releases here with the rest of the ‘official Apple Store’ countries. But I guess now I’m just SOL with the Duo. I’ll probably just keep my Air another year if supply is fucked into next spring.
Interesting that the Apple home page for my country still says Friday but I bet no one in Cupertino pays attention to update that.
37
u/Neil_Edwin_Michael 5h ago
You just got an iPhone Air and already wanted to swap it?
30
u/Fuzzy974 4h ago
Nothing wrong with selling or giving away a used phone and buying a new one. That's how a lot of people get a decent phone.
Well, assuming that's what was going to happen to that iPhone Air.
17
u/TheEMan1225 4h ago
Nothing wrong with buying a new phone every year either, why should internet strangers care?
→ More replies (3)7
u/cansofgrease 4h ago
No, I don't want a touchscreen MacBook Pro and therefore no one else should be able to buy one!
12
u/littlebiped 5h ago edited 4h ago
Yeah I got a launch day iPhone Air, but I regret trading in my 15 for it. It’s great to hold but the battery life has been a deal breaker. I also didn’t realise it was a bigger screen size, which was also an inconvenience to me. I would have gotten a Mini 17 if I could, at least then I’d be able to stomach the battery.
18
u/itscocoa 4h ago
This is interesting considering the Air has better battery life than the 15
6
u/littlebiped 4h ago
My bad, I meant the 15 Pro. The only GREAT thing about the Air is that it kept the titanium streak going, and will continue with the Duo.
→ More replies (8)7
u/ShinyGrezz 4h ago
Almost as if 90% of people who talk about the Air actually have no idea what the tradeoffs are lmao. Best iPhone Apple has ever made.
1
u/Tearaway32 2h ago
I agree. I have noticed an unfortunate drop in battery life since iOS 27 that has meant I get low on heavy use days. I’m hoping they fix it soon.

What country is that? I’m curious where the demand for the duo is outside of China.
9
1
u/littlebiped 5h ago
GCC — Apple is king here, but if you do see a non-Apple phone, it’s a Samsung, and it’s occasionally the foldable. I see a lot more foldables in the wild than the average US redditor judging by the comments.
18
13
u/Observes 5h ago
He asked you what country and you gave him a union.
5
u/littlebiped 4h ago edited 4h ago
Because regionally the entire union is all broadly treated as the same market, and all are Apple heavy and big into foldables with high interest in the Fold 8 and the Duo. I live in Qatar, but with a population so small it isn’t a very useful metric.
1
u/Quirky_Dino 4h ago
Even from the country bloc that’s helpful. I could see demand in those oil rich luxury markets. Funny enough I live in one of the most expensive places in the world (Coastal Southern California) and people think they’re primarily for children or gamers right now. Any adults I know will get a pro or pro max.
1
1
u/z4zendetta 3h ago
Had a feeling it was Qatar from your post lol so checked the link to confirm. I grew up in Qatar and now live in the uk (so kinda the other way around compared to you). I’ve gone store-to-store trying to secure early launches of iPhones, and a few years ago Ooredoo & Vodafone would get phones in December, a few months after the unofficial stores there

u/Satanicube 4h ago
Everyone's boasting that "reddit was wrong about the duo, it's actually popular!" but I just have a feeling that isn't telling the whole story. Like yeah, the Duo is more popular than we thought it'd be (mostly because of carrier subsidization tbh here in the US and countries where that's a thing) but I also feel like Apple couldn't make enough of them either and that's why they're "selling out".
Saying something is popular just because it ran out of stock isn't a good measure without knowing how much of the thing was produced to begin with.
7
5
u/NickBlasta3rd 3h ago
Despite other foldable phones on the market, this is still as 1st gen product for Apple. Combine that with price and supply issues(RAM, storage, etc) leaves corporate likely shooting for under forecasting vs over to prevent excess inventory and purchase orders.
So while it’d be great to have a ton already to go day 1, they’d rather not be left holding the bag so to speak. It’s not a great conspiracy to generate hype imo.
47
u/_HipStorian 5h ago
I went to the Apple store yesterday to try some watches and the specialist said they’ve had people coming in every day since the duo was announced to ask if it’d been released.
It’s going to be an extra busy day for them next week
52
u/howdramatic 3h ago
retail employee: false, we have been encouraged to bring customers into the store so they can get their hands on it, demo it, and experience it. Create and send session recaps, or order through the store kiosk's. IDK where any of this information is coming from. Not saying its in accurate, but since the company is hell bent on alignment, all of our morning meetings have specifically been centered around best practices for sold out product and how to proceed, the differences between Duo, Air and 18 Pro line up, and finally Siri AI demos.
9
6
u/DONOTSAYTHENWORD 2h ago
You'll find out for sure next week. Asking people coming into the store and play with a demo is much different than people coming in on release day expecting to buy one.
→ More replies (1)•
u/MechanizedKman 1h ago
You clearly are not familiar with Apples retail strategy, it’s centered around getting as many people in the store as they can and trying to put as much in front of them as possible hoping they will purchase something in inventory or create a preorder.
•
28
u/Envigad0 4h ago
and the only people that will truly feel these delays are the retail employees getting yelled at but whatever, something else to blame deirdre o’ brien on
9
u/The_Summary_Man_713 4h ago
Can confirm. I worked at Apple starting from the 4S days and we were yelled at CONSTANTLY. Especially during the holidays and after launch.
6
u/DONOTSAYTHENWORD 2h ago
Why would they yell? If there's no stock there's no stock, you can't argue iphones from thin air...?
6
u/thelastdaybreak 2h ago
Because managers only exist to appease the customer no matter what while the employee gets feedback for not being able to properly present all options
2
u/DONOTSAYTHENWORD 2h ago
You can't appease a phone out of thin air either.
3
u/thelastdaybreak 2h ago
The managers are paid enough to figure out whatever solution for that person
1
3
u/hsunamii 2h ago
Man I’m sorry - I always try to be really nice to the staff am pretty patient since I understand it’s busy. I try not to bother you all with questions I can look up myself and if anything, I tell you all exactly what I need, color, specs, etc. from the get go because I had all the time to research and decide beforehand. Sometimes I hear the questions or problem that customers have for y’all and I’m tempted to just help them while I’m waiting.

2
u/Typical_Minimum_8650 2h ago
Worked there last season and can confirm I was yelled at constantly over phones being sold out and peoples trade in values being not what they hoped for their completely cracked phones. Hated working there.

u/PARTINlCO 1h ago
After fumbling through the apple store pre-order, I resorted to t mobile… 32 minutes after 8 AM. Somehow, I got a 10/22 ship date. Idk how, I thought for sure that the dates would’ve slipped by then? Hoping that it stays.
•
u/hardcrasher1 1h ago
T-Mobile through Costco app is the way to go. I got an early Nov date and waived upgrade fees.
•
u/Due-Share-1087 23m ago
I got an oct 26-nov3 ship date and I am travelling overseas on the 6th...but when I called Tmobile they said it may not be correct and the date may slip once they know what stock they have "on or about Oct 24"..kinda silly
•
u/Swimsuit-Area 1h ago
I got mine from t-mo about 8 min after pre-orders went live because Apple.com wasn’t getting past the wait screen. My estimated ship date is October 28 - November 3rd

u/ayb11 4h ago
I did! Ended up Nov 15th but I was too slow to react. At 503am saw pick up at my local store was no available, tried another. Denied! By the time I went back one farther store had times. Selected and denied again. Tried Delivery as that’s the only option. Said Nov 7th. By the time I got through it all, it now says 15th to 23rd.

I’m curious to see how many of these were scalped, carriers were less likely to be hit by scalpers since they require an account to buy from them. I am also curious if Apple is doing anything about the scalpers, it technically violates the Apple Stores TOS as it’s counted as a B2B sale and they only do B2Consumer sales.
Apple better make the lack of day one store inventory easily available, otherwise they will have a lot of unhappy camped out Duo customers. I’m sure that will reflect very favorably when their shareholders see unhappy potential sales customers walk away and potentially never return as the fomo disappears.
12
u/SumoRoboto 4h ago
Why would people camp out? Apple would just tell them as soon as they attempted to camp out that they won’t have in-store availability. When I waited in line for the iPhone X the Apple Store only had maybe 20 phones they went down the line and asked you what color and what storage size and gave you a ticket they sent everyone else home and didn’t let anyone else line up
3
u/TheKobayashiMoron 4h ago
This shit makes me nuts. I know people like to buy unlocked unactivated phones directly from Apple but they need to go back to not offering them at launch if they have such a limited supply.
6
u/HillarysFloppyChode 4h ago
They can offer unlocked phones, but only to accounts greater than 6 months old and have had an Apple product on them in the past.
Deprioritize accounts made before preorder.
Scalpers get mostly locked out, and actually consumers get what they want.
For now people can call them out on social media and in customer support, maybe they’ll actually follow their own TOS if people do and inventory will open up more.
9
u/SumoRoboto 4h ago
You realize the report is that Apple made like 6 million units for all of 2026. Even if you went on eBay and counted how many 100% true reseller listings there are it wouldn’t even make up 1% of the 6 million units Apple produced.
It’s not the resellers that are causing this problem it’s the major demand for the Duo that a lot of people didn’t see coming
•
u/Ok-Calm-Narwhal 34m ago
Thanks for spelling this out so clearly. It’s getting so frustrating when everyone keeps saying “it’s the scalpers” while we also know there was a ton of normal demand as well - sure there are listings on eBay but we are not seeing thousands of them. Even if we did, that’s such a small amount relative to what Apple said it made.
•
u/CountSheep 1h ago
Fun fact: while working at an Apple Store I noticed the managers didn’t mind bulk scalpers or resellers because it meant a lot of money for certain from a specific customer. I’m not sure why this is better than just letting them go to customers but I guess it takes less effort since no activations happen in store.
I remember we’d get Brazilian resellers who’d buy 20-30 phones and then take them home to sell.
1
u/Kimjongdoom 2h ago
As someone who doesn’t use a major network—wtf dude no. That would mean I’m literally not allowed to own a phone without a contract from a big company f that.

Apple doesn’t do only B2C - who told you that bs?
Any company can buy from Apple and they do including mine.2
u/Worf_Of_Wall_St 2h ago
I think they mean Apple does not intend to sell to resellers through its retail stores, but I don't know if that's true or how Apple could even legally enforce it for a physical product.
2
u/HillarysFloppyChode 2h ago
According to the Apple Store ToS they do, under “Consumers only”.
They have a separate store for business accounts, the consumer retail side is for that, consumers.
•
u/NegMech 55m ago
This is not true. Apple does do B2B sales. Preorders for duos were available on the business side around the Pro Max release, several weeks ahead of consumers. They also prioritize business fulfillment, as we got confirmation of several hundred duos being charged yesterday for shipping this week. Yes, we are going to scalp them overseas.
0
u/earthcharlie 4h ago
Apple better make the lack of day one store inventory easily available, otherwise they will have a lot of unhappy camped out Duo customers. I’m sure that will reflect very favorably when their shareholders see unhappy potential sales customers walk away and potentially never return as the fomo disappears.
What makes you think Apple cares about that at all? Those wanting to be early adopters will keep at it until they get one.

Serious question - how does a physical store have a TOS?
3
u/HillarysFloppyChode 4h ago
The online store where you preorder and order has a Terms of Service that states it’s for consumers only, they have a separate business store for business purchases.

u/Intentionallyabadger 1h ago

8
u/iPod-Phone 4h ago
If this is true, we need to be hearing it from an Apple exec, not from random unnamed sources.
It’s possible these sources work in a store with very low population density and that specific store is getting that directive.

u/FoolishProphet_2336 5h ago
Apple’s a hardware company. Always has been. The software, services and apps are all a minor part of their business model to sell more hardware. This is their payday.

2
1
u/blackgenz2002kid 4h ago
I laughed at the time when I heard it but the fact of the matter is that Apple makes machines. MacBook Pros, Studios, Airpods, Watches, and the iPhone especially. the Duo is just another product in line with that with how precise it probably needs to be engineered to even make it. seems they weren’t ready for how many people wanted to experience this machine for themselves
•
4
u/TeslasAndComicbooks 4h ago
That used to be the case but the hardware is just a mechanism to sell software and services these days. That’s why they opened up Apple TV to all platforms and they make a killing on the App Store.
Hardware alone is a slow growth vertical.
•
u/Potential_Salt_5780 18m ago
This is the correct answer. Services are now 25% of their revenue and much higher margins. Hardware gets customers hooked then services keep them in.
5
u/mr_mope 4h ago
3/4 of the revenue is still hardware. It’s their biggest advantage over their competition.
6
u/ThatsNotGumbo 4h ago
Lot higher profit margin on the software side though. But fundamentally Apple is a lifestyle company. It’s the entire ecosystem that makes them the powerhouse that they are.
•
6
u/bubbaguy 4h ago
Revenue doesn’t equal profit. Quick internet search indicates that Apple’s software services has a ~75% margin while hardware only nets ~35%. Apple’s true value lies in their skills at intertwining both.
Their hardware wouldn’t be as valuable without their software, and their software’s value lies in its ability to simplify consumers’ lives. Apple has created a walled garden 100’ high that most consumers are completely content with.
With the iPhone reaching full maturity and only receiving incremental updates (excluding the duo). It fits that Apple has started focusing more on generating revenue through subscription services and ads. With prices of material rising globally, I would expect this gap in profit to expand in the years to come. Raising the price of iCloud storage by $1/mo will receive less scrutiny than increasing the cost of the iPhone by another $100.
•
u/Potential_Salt_5780 17m ago
This is the correct answer. Source: went all in on AAPL @$5 a share in 2007.
8
u/TheVajDestroyer 4h ago
You have this backwards
1
u/MightyTastyBeans 4h ago
No? Their revenue is 50% iphone, 26% services. The rest is other hardware.
4
u/FollowingFeisty5321 3h ago
Their profit is nearly 50% services.
In fact by profit, Google's advertising powered by their invasive tracking is probably Apple's 2nd or 3rd biggest business accounting for $20+ billion profit annually, most likely slightly ahead of the Mac or iPad, and advertising overall is definitely ahead of them if you include their own ad services.
•
5
u/Ok_Fail_1770 4h ago
Tbh the software ties all the hardware together. Millions of people that might be curious to switch to android wont because of software compatibility. So it’s not a stretch
1
u/i-love-small-tits-47 3h ago
Revenue isn’t profit, and the services are way more profitable, and growing.
1
u/ElegantBiscuit 4h ago
And the services depend on the software. They don't make app store money or sell apple care plans for android phones, and I doubt that an icloud storage plan is a windows user's first choice for cloud storage.

Oh I was just considering the “tray” being flipped to the other side.
Wouldn’t the camera bump still be up top?
1
u/DONOTSAYTHENWORD 2h ago
Yes, that is how they'd approach it. Not flipping upside down.
1
u/Tearaway32 2h ago
Wouldn’t that cause issues with the FaceTime camera location and lesser space due to the rounded corners? Agree upside down would create users with the camera bump. I’d be curious to see how this is addressed.

→ More replies (14)5
u/jmak329 4h ago
It's more popular since it's finally an exciting new product in a tired market. And they don't have anywhere close to the stock of their other phones since it's a first gen product. There's no sales data to know how much they should be producing. Sure they can look at the ZFold8 for some estimations but just no way of knowing.
Also the yields and quality control of the screen and hinge and stuff like that is much lower than just a slab phone. Requires more labor and time to ensure decent quality control with how complicated it is to build a foldable. With time and experience this will get better.
12
u/Lostpoetssociety 5h ago
It doesn’t require you to get it. Its commerce, supply and demand. It’s just raw numbers, the pre-orders are out until January. It is that popular.
3
u/Graziani13 5h ago
How don’t you get it? Apple (ever heard of them?) is making a new iPhone form factor for the first time since the iPhone X
5
u/Rare-Accident4355 4h ago

u/Rare-Accident4355 3h ago

Samsung is functional, but not delightful. The integration of aesthetics, user experience, and materials makes Apple devices delightful.

I'll add that in addition to the hardware being the most significant change in the iPhone's history, they also delivered some absolutely stellar software to compliment it. I think with new designs like this it can be easy to think just a gimmick if all it does is fold open, but Apple showed so many compelling ways to use the different screens and physical orientations of its Swiss army knife style that I think it overloaded a lot of people's brains with dopamine just watching the reveal.

Judging by the amount of scalpers on eBay, I’m guessing most of the demand is from scalpers.
But carriers didn’t slide nearly as fast as Apple did.

Stupid, so many people don’t want a 2500$+ gadget stolen from their porch. I guess I’ll wait until 2027

If they're selling out before it's on sale, then clearly people do not have that concern.
Which makes sense. Every time I've had a phone delivered, its been handed to me and I had to sign for it. Where on Earth do you live that they don't do that for expensive deliveries?
