Is there anyone here whose family origins are from Turkey’s Eastern Black Sea region (Rize, Artvin) or from Abkhazia?

• Upvotes

I’ve been doing some ancestry research, but I think the people who migrated to Abkhazia and my family are different. Their surname is “Topalyan,” while ours is “Topaloğlu.” When I talked to some Hemshin people here, they said it’s not the same, but I’m still curious. Our family is quite large and later settled in Rize. Just wondering if anyone has any information or has heard anything about this. Thanks in advance

Discussion / Քննարկում Has Yerevan become a party city?

So I’m originally from Yerevan but left about 4 years ago. I keep seeing videos on Instagram of people partying in the streets every night, party buses and music everywhere, a million events happening year-round, all sorts of cafes, clubs and bars with ecstatic vibe. It seems like life is booming.

Is this reality? Obviously I know social media is not reality and my feed is bringing me a filtered view but it feels like Yerevan has become a Barcelona ngl. I’m gonna be coming soon and I’m genuinely curious to see what’s changed lol.

Armenian families and ancestors

A couple of months ago, I started building my family tree on my father’s Armenian side. So far, I have managed to document more than 350 relatives.

Based on my estimates, however, the tree could potentially include anywhere from 1,000 people—if I am able to find information about the families who fled the Sasun region in the archives of the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute or in the Ottoman archives, although I am not very hopeful about the latter.

I have reliable information about my ancestors dating back to 1850. I also know the names of three earlier generations of direct paternal ancestors, but I have no information about the other members of their families. This takes that branch of the family back to approximately 1770–1800.

I had never really thought about just how large Armenian families could be. Of course, I had heard the joke about Armenians having a “small” wedding with more than 200 guests. But now I keep discovering people whom I have not only never met—I did not even know they existed.

So I would like to ask:
1. Are your families just as large?
2. If you have researched relatives who fled the Ottoman Empire—especially from the Sasun Valley, the Khut-Brnashen district, or the villages of Kost and Enguzik—please let me know which sources you used and which archives or institutions you contacted.

Armenia - Iran / Հայաստան - Իրան Questions about visiting Armenia

I am considering visiting Armenia. I have some questions:

1) How easy is it getting around for English speakers?

2) How much is the cost of a meal in a normal restaurant? How easy is it for pescatarians to eat?

3) How much is the cost of basic hotels per night?

4) How easy is it to get around without a car?

I am considering arriving by rail from Tsiblisi. Any suggestions/recommendations for this trip? And are there recommended stops?

Thank you.

Շնորհակալություն։

Hey everyone. I spent two weeks travelling through your beautiful country and fell in love with culture, landscape and history. I took pictures of these two murals on a building in Sevan. I assume they're dedicated to your fallen heroes, but I'd like to know exactly what they say, if anyone is able to read out the blurred letters. Thank you!

Looking for a free place to work remotely in Yerevan (Arabkir area)

Hey everyone! I'm staying in Yerevan for the next 2 months near Arabkir neighborhood, and I'm looking for a free place within walking distance where I can work remotely on my laptop Monday–Friday, around 9 AM–5 PM.

Ideally, somewhere with free Wi-Fi, tables, chairs, power outlets, and where it's okay to stay and work for several hours.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Discussion / Քննարկում Police academy and work in Armenia

This post is for the people who have any idea on how the police academy works in Armenia.

I am about to move to Armenia, and literally the only job that I know is working in the police sector. I work in the police municipal in Lebanon, even tho I suffer from Pots and Non epileptic seizures, and have a note from my doctor. Now these two illnesses are mostly caused by the trauma that I went through in Lebanon (the pots is another topic but its 100% manageable and even my doctor gave me clearance on living my life without worrying of any cardiac issue as long as i continue taking my medicine, wear compression socks, I personally wear ankle brace, and exercising).

I will bring my medical file with me, all the papers translated to Armenian so it can be easier, but overall I live my life normally. I am into combat sports, mainly Kung Fu, been for 13 years, and I do heavy weightlifting, and I also can handle the stress and the exhaustion of this specific job.

I wanted to know that, as I have done my researches, you either have 4 years, 2 years, or 5 to 6 months, based on, i think that you choose, on how you want to learn to become a police officer. And that the 4 years are your B.A, the 2 years are basically college, and the 5 to 6 months is basically an intensive course. And, even if, you have the medical clearance by both a doctor in Lebanon (where i live) and Armenia, would be fit for me to take the entrance exam, along with the fitness exam, and what is the fitness exam so that I can start getting ready from now.

It will be 4 years that im working in the police municipality, and I wanted to know if this is a plus too, just for it to stay in my C.V and be taken into consideration that I know some stuff.

And I have sent an email, but, haven't gotten an email back to know if I can get at least enrolled from here because I have searched that I can.

So, if anyone has any idea, please do tell, im tired from searching about it on the Internet and would like to know about it more from the ones who are actually living and working in this field in armenia

What to see in Armenia?

I'm thinking of visiting this winter. Not exactly the height of tourist season, but that's when i have the most time.

I'm Canadian, so I'm used to the cold and am still good for hikes to go see stuff.

Saw a few waterfalls around Mount Aragats- would they be frozen solid, or are they big enough to keep flowing?

Also, I see quite a few historical sites in the province of Syunik- but would the region be safe, considering that Iran is at war with the United States? Complete opposite side of the country, but still.
