Build a free, customizable Armenian bilingual dictionary for [TARGET_LANGUAGE] with Perplexity: here's the exact setup (works for any language pair!)

Barev everyone! 👋

I'm learning [EASTERN_ARMENIAN] and wanted a reliable way to translate words, verbs, idioms and full sentences, with phonetics, etymology and real-life examples.

So I built a personal bilingual dictionary using a **Perplexity Space** (a persistent workspace with custom instructions and trusted sources). It's been a game-changer for me, so I'm sharing the recipe!

**My starting point:**

I needed two-way translation between **French ⇄ Modern Eastern Armenian**. But the method is fully adaptable. You can build a "[LANGUAGE_A] × Armenian" dictionary for *any* language, or switch to **Western Armenian** instead.

## How it works

  1. Create a Space in Perplexity (name it something like "[YOUR_SPACE_NAME]").

  2. Paste a prompt into the Space's **Instructions** field. It tells the AI what to output and how to behave.

  3. Add trusted dictionaries and learning sites in the **Links** section so the AI searches them first.

  4. Ask for translations. Every answer comes back in a clean table.

## What you can customize

- **Language pair:** replace [LANGUAGE_A] (my case: French) with English, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, or whatever you speak.

- **Armenian variant:** swap [EASTERN_ARMENIAN] for [WESTERN_ARMENIAN] and adjust the "vigilance" rule so the AI rejects the *other* dialect.

- **Table columns:** mine are (1) Armenian translation, (2) IPA, (3) Armenian etymology, (4) a common usage example. Change them to [YOUR_COLUMNS].

- **Transliteration:** I deliberately banned it because I only want IPA, because I read Armenian. But at the beginning I used transliteration, so you can easily ask for [TRANSLITERATION_SYSTEM] (e.g., Hübschmann-Meillet, BGN/PCGN, or a simplified Latin system) *in addition to* IPA.

- **Links:** every hyperlink in the Links section is swappable. Replace mine with [YOUR_TRUSTED_DICTIONARY_LINKS] (e.g., Western Armenian resources, a bilingual dictionary for your language, etc.).

- **Reference dictionary:** I use [ARMENIAN_MONOLINGUAL_DICTIONARY_URL] (hy.wikipedia.org / hy.wiktionary.org) to check that the AI's translations actually exist in a reference source.

- **Verb "to be" rule:** in spoken Eastern Armenian, people often say ա instead of է for the 3rd person singular. I told the AI to use the colloquial form. Adjust this to [YOUR_DIALECT_OR_REGISTER_RULE].

- **Polysemy handling:** I let the AI ask me clarifying questions when a word has several meanings, as a numbered list I can pick from. Keep it, tweak it, or remove it: [YOUR_AMBIGUITY_RULE].

- **Sourcing transparency:** the AI tells me whether each answer is sourced from my links or not. You can set [YOUR_SOURCING_RULE].

- **Output language of instructions:** mine are in French, but you can write yours in [INSTRUCTION_LANGUAGE].

## Why I like it

- Answers stay consistent, in the same format every time.

- It prioritizes sources *I* trust instead of random web pages.

- It flags uncertainty instead of inventing words.

- It handles single words, verbs, idioms and whole sentences.

Fair warning: AI can still make mistakes, especially with rarer words, idioms, and dialect distinctions. So I always double-check against a native speaker or a reference dictionary. Treat it as a smart study assistant, not an authority.

If you try it, tell me how it goes and what tweaks you made! I'd especially love feedback from native speakers on the quality of the output. And if you build a Western Armenian version, please share your instructions and links with the community! 🇦🇲

Below is my **exact setup** (French × Eastern Armenian), copy-paste ready in French but also translated into English. Swap in your own [CUSTOMIZABLE_ELEMENTS] as described above. And translate it with AI or Google Translate in order to write down your Prompt/Instruction in your Perplexity language.

## MY EXACT EXAMPLE: French × Modern Eastern Armenian (translate in English so everybody can understand my message by reading my reddit post)

### Instructions (paste this in the Space's "Instructions" field)

PURPOSE OF THIS SPACE

This space is used to translate words, verbs, idiomatic expressions, or sentences from French into modern, everyday Eastern Armenian.

GUIDELINES

- By default, I will not give any specific instructions when starting a new conversation. In that case, always provide me with the following elements in a table (even for a single line of translation):

(1) the translation into modern Eastern Armenian

(2) the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) version of the Armenian word

(3) the Armenian etymology of the translated word. If it is a sentence made up of several words, leave this column of the table empty.

(4) a concrete, common example of how the translated word is used. If it is a sentence to translate, leave this column empty.

- Otherwise, I will give you a very specific request, which will be the instruction to follow, and in that case you will not follow the default instructions.

(5) I do not want you to write, in any way, a transliteration of the Armenian word using Latin or other letters. I only need the IPA version, as stated in my instruction (2).

INSTRUCTION FOR HANDLING POLYSEMY IN FRENCH AND ARMENIAN, AND PRELIMINARY STEP BEFORE ANY TRANSLATION PROPOSAL

A common French word can cover several translations and Armenian words.

Conversely, an Armenian word can cover several translations and French words.

That is why, systematically, before proposing one or more translations, you must check whether my French input potentially covers several meanings in Armenian, and vice versa.

That is why I authorize you to ask me questions if you have the slightest doubt about the precise meaning in which I am using a word that is polysemous in French itself, or polysemous from the perspective of translating into Armenian.

You may list the different possible meanings proposed for translation as a numbered list, and I will reply by indicating the number(s) from your list that I am interested in.

INSTRUCTION ON TRANSLATING THE VERB OR AUXILIARY "TO BE" (լինել) in Eastern Armenian

In everyday spoken language, it is very common and widespread for Armenians to use "ա" instead of "Է" for the 3rd person singular of the verb or auxiliary "to be".

Therefore, use the colloquial form "ա" whenever you need to use the 3rd person singular of the verb or auxiliary "to be".

RESEARCH METHOD

- Base your research first and exclusively on the website links I provide in the Space. You may explore sub-links associated with those links.

- If you cannot find satisfactory solutions, then I authorize you to explore other internet links.

ULTIMATE POINT OF VIGILANCE

- Always verify that it is indeed Eastern Armenian, or "Armenia's Armenian", and always reject Western Armenian.

- Always tell me whether your answer is sourced (based on my websites attached to the Space) or not sourced.

ULTIMATE DICTIONARY

[https://hy.wikipedia.org/\](https://hy.wikipedia.org/): this link gives access to an Armenian dictionary written entirely in Armenian. It lets you check whether your creations/inventions/compositions/proposals actually exist in a reference Armenian dictionary.

### Instructions (paste this in the Space's "Instructions" field)

I made an app to help me learn Armenian

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

TL;DR: I’m working on a web app that helps you build vocabulary through games. It supports several languages, but Armenian has the biggest word base so far. I add new games regularly.

How I learn Armenian right now:

I started with books and YouTube courses, but they focused on grammar from day one. That was too overwhelming for me, so I didn’t stick with them, although they did help me learn the alphabet. Then I came across the idea of learning the 1,000 most common words first and leaving grammar for later. So I started buying “Mashenka” (Մաշենկա), a crossword magazine for kids, and picked up new words from it. I used Google Translate, various LLMs and bararan.am to check the meanings. The puzzle format was fun, and the new words went into my notes. At some point I got tired of jumping between different websites, so I built a web app to keep all my words in one place. Later I added games to practice them.

You can try it here: https://memdecks.com

I’d love feedback from both learners and native speakers. Tell me which words are missing, which translations look wrong, and what kind of games you would like to see. Շնորհակալություն!

Eastern Armenian question Do you call your uncle “Bidzik”?

The other day I was talking to some of my friends and referred to my uncle (dad’s brother) as bidzik. They looked confused at first. I am from Lori and lots of people call their uncles bidzik here. What other regions have a similar usage? I thought about Tavush at first but my Ijevantsi grandma said that it’s not like that in Ijevan. That made me curious whether there are other regions in Armenia where people use bidzik for their uncles.

Also curious about Akhalkalaki and Tbilisi Armenians since Bidzik is actually a Georgian word borrowing apparently. What do they call uncles?

Western Armenian question Vakifli/Musa Ler Dialect- Has it changed ?

Hi everyone, Bolsahye here.

I was doing some research on the different dialects of Armenian the other day and while I was watching some interviews from the Vakifli village in Antioch I couldn’t help but notice that the dialect spoken is literally the same as what you may come across in Bolis. It’s kind of confusing to me because I thought since Vakifli is located on the slopes of Musa Ler the villagers would probably speak the endangered Musa Ler dialect.
Does anyone have information on this linguistic switch ? Was there a wave of armenians from urban areas that decided to move there ?

If anyone has some information on this I would be really glad to learn more.

Can you apply for Armenian citizeship using the Ottoman archival records?

My brother is an expert who can read the Ottoman archives, and he actually found 150 years old records that list some of our ancestors being listed as "Armenian People" in the official census. They were even using the same surname that our grandfather's mother uses to this day (Kalaycıoğlu).

They were also recorded to be living in the same house that the whole lineage of our Pontian Greek grandfather, whose maternal side was Armenian. Seems that it was a big house.

My DNA tests show that I am more Armenian than Pontian Greek, too. It shows that I am a mixture of a little bit Georgian, some Greek and majority Armenian, no Turkish blood.

Eastern Armenian question Armenian Bible Verse Translation for Tattoo Help

Armenian Tattoo Translation Help

Hello there!

I am planning on finally getting a tattoo in Armenian soon but unfortunately am not at all familiar with the language and wanted to confirm that this translation is correct.

I am getting the Bible verse from 1 Corinthians 15:55 "Oh death, where is thy sting?" And my understanding is the translation of that to Eastern Armenian is, "Ով մահ, ո՞ւր է քո խայթոցը." Is that correct? Would anyone recommend another translation?

Thank you very much any advice is appreciated!

Eastern Armenian question Do you think diglossia in Eastern Armenian will shrink in the coming decades?

This is not a very well-thought-out take, but for some reason I have this feeling that with the rise of social media and people creating intellectual content in a more casual and emotionally connective way, maybe we might see a new kind of Eastern Armenian emerge that blends formal literary style with colloquialism to give us one language that can be used both professionally but without sounding robotic.

Even for people born, raised, and educated in Armenia, grakan hayeren can often feel out of touch. Many people know how to use it, but I doubt anyone really likes it. I feel like part of the 21st century zeitgeist, in all aspects of life, is to be relaxed and let go of archaic traditions that limit the human experience, and the internet is probably accelerating the transmission of that mentality to Armenia; so maybe 20 years from now we'll see a more unified EA emerge that's all purpose and pleasing to all.

Thoughts?

Classical Armenian question Is it true that the Armenian էշ and Turkish Eşek have two completely different roots? Proto Indo European and old Turkic?

I got these off gemini, it does sound like it's making sense but I am no linguist to say for sure.

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%D5%A7%D5%B7

Hrachia Acharian (Armenian Etymological Root Dictionary) / Հայերեն Արմատական Բառարան) documents how proto indo european *kʷ or *ḱw systematically shifted to š in Classical Armenian through palatalization (e.g., PIE *ḱm̄tom $\$rightarrow Armenian hariwr "hundred"; PIE *h₁éḱwos $\$rightarrow Old Armenian ēš).

The Turkish and Persian ones have their own origins.

Sir Gerard Clauson, An Etymological Dictionary of Pre-Thirteenth-Century Turkish, Oxford University Press (1972), p. 260:

https://archive.org/details/etymologicaldict0000clau/page/n9/mode/2up

Clauson demonstrates that Old Turkic eşgek is recorded in 11th-century Central Asian texts (such as Mahmud al-Kashgari’s Dīwān Lughāt al-Turk, 1072 CE) as far east as Kashgar (Xinjiang).

Sergei Starostin, Anna Dybo, Oleg Mudrak, Etymological Dictionary of the Turkic Languages / Tower of Babel Comparative Database (2003):

The root *eĺčgek is attested in branches that had zero contact with the Caucasus/Anatolia prior to modern times.

Reconstruction problem: If Turkic had borrowed the monosyllabic Armenian word ēš (esh), it would have entered Turkic as eş or eşe. It cannot account for the internal cluster *ĺč and the nominal suffix *-gek that produce Central Asian Siberian forms like Tuvan eštek, Chuvash aš̬ak, and Proto-Mongolic *elǰigen.

Eastern Armenian question Need help with translating this

I got this text (seems like a rant to me from the small parts I understood), but it sounds lile a huge run-on sentence and the context isn't 100% clear to me. Feels all over the place. Need help translating from Armenian script to English (google translate's translation doesn't make any sense) >>>

Why did Armenia make its own alphabet?

This might sound like a silly question, but hear me out. Very few languages have their own writing systems. Most languages have borrowed another culture's system and just adapted it to their language. Why didn't Armenia do the same?

If the argument is that Greek or other letters weren't fit for the sounds of the Armenian language, you could say that about a million languages. The Latin alphabet was not designed for writing Czech or Yoruba, and yet people have made it work. Scribes just added markings and adapted the letters to their languages. I don't see any reason why Armenia couldn't have done the same thing. So if that's not a major obstacle, was there any other reason Mashtots decided to make a unique script? It's not exactly unique because you can see the resemblance with some Greek letters; plus, writing has only been invented independently 3-4 times in human history, so even languages with their unique alphabets took inspiration from other pre-existing systems.

Anyone have any historical context? Thanks.

Why did old Armenian books have the slanted font?

Post image
46 Upvotes

Growing up as a kid I kind of hated this font. I thought it looked ugly and genuinely wondered why this was chosen as the standard for books back in the 1800s and 1900s. I always preferred the more modern, straight, blocky font. It looked neater and was easier to read.

I no longer hate the old font, but I still wonder... why? Why did the intellectuals in charge choose to make this the "book font?"

Is this text readable for you?

Hello! I am working on a multilingual pixel font and I am currently adding support for armenian unicode block. I want to collect some sort of feedback on whether the text is legible for native speakers and what could be improved. Also, I would like to learn about punctuation marks in you language (should they be written above the words or they could be written after them?).

Thank you for your answers.

PS: I don't speak armenian, obviously, so the text above is google translated part from "Alice's adventures in Wonderland".

Here is the original text:

Western Armenian learning platform

Parev,

I am in the process of learning Western Armenian and found Pimsler was extremely effective for me, especially in the car. Unfortunately, Pimsler only had one lesson and didn’t get very advanced.

Are there any similar platforms with a similar learning style with Armenian repetition and English translation. Would love to keep going in my studies.

How does the other dialect sound to you?

As someone who grew up with one EA parent and one WA parent and speaks both fluently, I don't know what it's like to hear the other dialect and not understand, or to hear and think "that's not the Armenian I'm used to."

In terms of physical sound quality, how would you describe the other dialect? Speaking from my biased perspective, EA sounds softer and smoother because it has the unaspirated consonants, but WA can sound sweeter and doesn't have that "Soviet harshness" that EA can sometimes have.

In terms of understanding, do you (or did you) have a hard time understanding the other dialect? Even without Russian and Arabic words, do you struggle to pick things up? And what about grammar? Maybe it can confuse people sometimes that WA's present tense is EA's future tense!

I'd love to know how people experience hearing the "other Armenian" and how your perceptions of the other dialect have changed over time as you've gotten more exposure.

I found out about Zartsants this week - it is a new Western Armenian program that is frankly light on the details, but seems to be a combo of learning and immersion? I signed up for it - when you sign up, you schedule an online meeting with them to figure out how best to use the program/platform. No idea about costs or anything else, but it is funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian foundation, which funds a lot of WA content/programs. My meeting is next week, and I will report back. It is being done out of Paris, so I am hopeful that the WA content will actually be good/accurate.
