Every time they say it’s in the customers & employees interest & to enhance your shopping experience you can substitute that for saving money. Its always about saving money. Manned checkouts are quicker.

My store removed all manned checkouts before I left and replaced them with hybrids (which were awful to use) and obviously caused a lot of pissed off people. Even when manned they still complained that they had to put cash into the machine.

We’ve got about ten manned tills but even at Xmas they only open a couple, complete waste of space, would be good to get them gone, in 2026 when home computers and mobiles have been around for 30 years or more it’s daft to keep making excuses for old people, I’m in my early 40s so in 3 decades I’ll be where the majority of elderly folk are now, it’s absurd to think I couldn’t possibly keep up with technological changes going forwards, more self checkouts and support for scan and go (they often close those tills in our store so you have to queue up to go through the trolley shop bit instead) please.

Why are you assuming it's just because of old people that they are keeping manned tills? I know plenty of people of all ages who want to use a manned till because they have a lot of shopping and the process is quicker and easier.

I personally use self serve as I like to take my time bagging etc but manned tills have a place still.

I mean, we hardly ever open ours, and our customer demographic swings more towards the older end of the scale. They’re becoming increasingly redundant, can’t blame the company for wanting to get rid and utilise their floorspace better.

We open ours when we have people with a trolly but a lot of customers who don't want to use the self serves, use the kiosk instead. Doesn't help that we have very few cash self serves and one is always broken.
