Latin American Politics [Serious] Uruguay just created a path for permanent residency for Cuban asylum seekers. How are Cuban asylum seekers perceived across Latin America?

We've all seen the conversation around Venezuelans asylum seekers. My own country has normalized about 100,000 of them. I know much less about Cubans.

What are your thoughts? Do you see Cuban asylum seekers or migrants in your country? How are they perceived compared to Venezuelans?

Hardworking but noisy, they are always yelling and they set up their music very loud.

Just to clarify, we didn't just create it. There was already a decree from 2024 that the current government hadn't renewed until now, so it's not something entirely new

They are almost identical to us, the ones from Miami though we have nothing in common.

The ones from Miami are Americans with Cuban ancestry. Their families lost their assets after Castro and they fled to Miami. Most of them have never set foot in Cuba let alone lived like a Cuban.

correct that many can't come back and refuse to finance the regime

We're not a country that receives a lot of immigrants, but we're used to seeing cubans since the 80s. They're viewed positively and locals often show curiosity for their culture.

One of my best teachers was a cuban guy named Jesus (being called Jesus is not normal in Brasil). Dude was one hell of a person, spent his life studying in the soviet union, he clearly was not a communist but never said bad words about NO ONE, he was actually very thankful for both the cuban regime / the soviets.

He was making solid money here tho, he still sent some back to cuba to help his family, until this day the only cuban I ever met.

Aside from the fact that, like many Caribbeans, they often pronounce the "r" as an "l," and, in my view, tend to be a bit boisterous, I don’t see anything unusual about them... jokes aside, they are just as welcome as anyone else.

Cubans don’t pronounce a R like a L

Obviously, I’m not generalizin, far from it. In any case, it’s a well-known phenomenon; it’s not necessarily a bad thing, either it just might sound a bit unusual to some people. Do you see what I mean? If anyone wants to learn more about this, they can look up "lambdacism".

Si, he notado que en Colombia casi no hay cubanos. Usan el pais como ruta de transito.

They came during Correa presidency, didn't adapt and went to the US at the first opportunity when things started to go belly up (completely understandable tbf).

I think most Ecuadorians don't have a strong opinion on Cuban immigrants like it happened with Colombians in the early 2000s or the Venezuelans right now.

They are good hardworking people, I met a few, one of them an electrical engineer working at a coffee, super intelligent guy, wishing the best for them

I don't think there's that many Cubans in Argentina, but overall I think they have a positive image as hard working people. I really love their accent too.

Never seen any. Cubans here are usually doctors working in public primary health care

I've met a few Cubans while I lived in Brazil, as well as seen a few influencers online. I worked with a local NGO that helped refugees integrate, mainly Venezuelans but also Haitians and Cubans. Usually they say Cubans don't have much trouble integrating because they're more used to following rules, procedures and seeking the correct channels to do things.

They tend to be hardworking but unfortunately have crazy PTSD from the colour red and anyone who calls themselves politically "left", just like the Miami Cubans revere Trump.

Costa Rica is full of Cubans, you can find their experiences across YouTube. They are really nice. First generation struggles a bit as we tend to be too quiet for them. Second generation are just Costa Ricans. They blend in pretty well here.

Outside Miami Cubans I think it's mostly good folks. The ones I've met at least.

Miami Cubans are the American Nazis.

Miami Cuban heritage Americans despise Cubans that do not belong to their “elite” Miami group. There is a reason Castro was popular back in the day. The upper classes really mistreated and devalued poor people. This mentality has not changed.

u/tarobeansmayo Dominican Republic 9h ago

Exactamente! La élite cubana. Solo mira a Ana de Armas.

Most of them are medics. Some are right-wing authoritarians who want to impose their worldview.

u/Ok_Building8506 Argentina 1d ago

Imagine the quality of a Cuban doctor that got a degree from a Cuban university….

3

u/Nombre_Autogenerado Peru 1d ago

Honestly, there well regarded though I have been told there are good and not so good Cuban doctors.

Was usually ok... but now a good share of the latin america started to coppy the north american agenda anti imigration and anti comunist... and in my opinion the andinos countries tend to be more racist then brasil for example... since i think the most of cubans are afrodescendents.... well cuban will suffer anyway since they are used as targets in the panic agenda made by evangelicals and the righ wing folks in general.

When I was in Peru, Cubans were loved everywhere, the relief on people’s faces when I’d tell them I’m half Cuban and not Venezuelan as they would assume, was crazy. Cubans in Peru don’t form gangs or other criminal groups, and are huge in the salsa/club scene there. Peruvians love their music , even Reparto / Cuban Reggaeton. I had never heard another country play Reparto.

u/juant675 now in 1d ago

there's a ton here but most of them even if they love argentina cant withstand their urge to go to usa sooner or later

Cubans don’t get as much hate as the Venezuelans
