Best and worst experiences with airport immigrations?

For those who travel in the region, what have been your best and worst experiences coming into a country in Latam with airport staff or border control? I'm curious to know if there are trends like people from X tend to feel Y in Z country or what not.

Moving to Latin America Quant-focused development/inequality researcher planning a long-term move to LatAm: which ecosystems actually hire foreigners?

• Upvotes

About me:
US Master of International Affairs (International Economics + Development track)

Strong applied quantitative background: econometrics, data analysis, GIS, applied to social issues

Fluent Spanish and Portuguese
About 3 years of relevant work experience by the time I move

Planning to make Latin America home for the next 20 years or so. This isn't a gap year.

What I want to work on:
Applied inequality and poverty research, environmental policy, or similar field-based work with communities, not just desk analysis
Ideally some connection to university research on poverty and development

What I'm asking:
Where are the real ecosystems for someone like me? I'm thinking of:
Think tanks and research centers
University-affiliated poverty or development labs
NGOs and foundations with strong M&E or research arms
Regional or multilateral bodies (ECLAC, IDB, CAF, etc.)
Impact evaluation shops (J-PAL LAC, IPA, etc.)
Social enterprises or consultancies doing applied social or environmental work

I'd really appreciate hearing which countries or cities have the most active scenes for this (e.g., Santiago, Bogotá, Mexico City, São Paulo, Lima)

Specific organizations or research groups worth getting on the radar of

How foreigners realistically get hired: networking, local master's or PhD, consulting first, etc.

Visa and work-permit realities in these sectors

Salary expectations and whether local or regional contracts are livable

I already know "just stay in the US" and "government jobs are for nationals only" are common answers. I'm looking for the non-government paths that do exist.

Thanks in advance. Happy to share anything I learn with others looking at the same path.

Language Does your country also have a non-latin language, and which is the most popular one?

Obviously, in Latin America, Romance languages tend to predominate, but many countries still have some indigenous languages that are alive, or specific creoles and non-latin languages that have appeared over time, which are the most popular ones in your country?

Latin American Politics [Serious] Uruguay just created a path for permanent residency for Cuban asylum seekers. How are Cuban asylum seekers perceived across Latin America?

We've all seen the conversation around Venezuelans asylum seekers. My own country has normalized about 100,000 of them. I know much less about Cubans.

What are your thoughts? Do you see Cuban asylum seekers or migrants in your country? How are they perceived compared to Venezuelans?

Are Ecuadorians Phony?

I grew up in a very Hispanic and Ecuadorian region in New York / New Jersey and have been friends and worked with tons of Ecuadorians throughout my life. After forming a lot of close relationships over my youth and adulthood, I’ve noticed a recurring pattern. Upfront, everyone seems very cool and friendly, but I've frequently run into major issues with indirect conflict or behind-the-scenes drama—like people talking shit behind your back or trying to hit on your significant other.

I’m not Latino myself, but even my other Hispanic friends from the area have shared stories about running into this specific kind of toxic behavior with some Ecuadorian guys they knew. I actually even got laid off from a job because an Ecuadorian coworker who I thought I was cool with went to my manager and claimed I was stealing time off the clock (which was a lie)

I am absolutely not trying to generalize an entire country or push an agenda here, but in my experience, the social dynamics seem to operate very differently compared to my other Latino friends. For those familiar with the culture, is this pretty accurate or have I just unfortunately run into the wrong circles of people? This is an honest question to understand the culture, not a slander post.

Culture What's a song that instantly takes you back to a specific moment growing up in your country?

I'm based in London and asked a similar question in a UK subreddit earlier. I wasn't expecting much, but people started sharing these amazing little memories, from childhood holidays to family kitchens and nights out decades ago.

What I loved was how specific the stories were. Sometimes people could even remember the smells, sounds and tiny details of that moment.

It made me really curious about the memories people associate with music across Latin America, especially songs I might never have come across.

It doesn't have to be a famous song, or even one from your country.

What's the song, and what particular moment or place does it take you back to?

Would love to hear the little details!

History What historical periods/events are most poorly taught or understood in your country?

For example I'm from the US and in my experience despite the huge number of crazy things our government did around the world during the Cold War in the name of anti-communism that still influence world events today, only a few really get covered in history class or popular media and thus most don't stick in the average person's mind.

Gringo speaking in espanol without asking?

Gringo aqui de Los Estados Unidos

I speak basic Spanish and trying to practice with Hispanics/Latinos.

95% of the time the people are great and seem to appreciate the effort even when I mess up. However, I don’t want to assume somebody speaks it.

If I hear speaking speaking it, am I ok to use it using English? Even if just normal interactions. For example, you need to pass somebody “discuple or con Permiso” or “gracias” or “buenas dias” etc in a greeting or when somebody holds the door.

Basically, in the US, I don’t want to assume someone’s language based off their appearance. Or is it better to ask before speaking? Or if they are struggling with English, ask if Spanish is easier for them?

Gracias todos!

Do you consider yourself sexually positive or negative

Are you one of the people that thinks everything is getting pornographic and every single thing is getting sexualized and our culture is decaying and that media is promoting degeneracy, or do you consider that everyone who complain about sexualization in media is a pro censorship conservative puritan or an annoying virtue signaling feminist, or do you have a more middle point, what is your position.

Why are some people from Latin America offended by Americans calling themselves “Americans” and insisting on using “United-Statesian”

At first I thought it was people directly translating “estadounidense” but I’ve seen some people say they get annoyed and make a point of saying “United-statesian” because the US isnt the only country in the Americas and attribute it to some sort of ignorance or America centric thinking on our end.

But frankly I just think it’s because saying “I’m United States of American” is way too much to say so we just shorten it to “I’m American” seeing as there aren’t any other countries in the American continents that have the word “America” in them.

I might be poking the bear with this one but it just seems like a strange hill to die on. There’s plenty of other things that the world can be angry at us about but this one just seems silly to me.

Culture Is Gabriel García Márquez half-Mexican?

Today I was wondering whether Gabriel García Márquez could be considered half-Mexican, given that he spent half his life in Mexico and died there. To me, at least, he is half-Colombian and half-Mexican.

Latin American Politics Latin common coin

If Latin America and the Caribbean had an economic, political, and housing union modeled after the European Union and a common currency what would be the ideal name for that currency?

Si América Latina y el Caribe tuvieran una unión económica, política y habitacional siguiendo el modelo de la Unión Europea, y contaran con una moneda común, ¿cuál sería el nombre ideal para dicha moneda?
