Just a reminder that Kaiser‘s is a locally owned chicken and milkshake option, and their milkshakes are made from real ice cream.

Athens County Port Authority removes public interest from Mission & Objectives

A good friend of Athens noticed that the local Port Authority, a non-elected governing body formed and appointed by the Athens County Commissioners, recently updated their Mission and Objectives. The primary difference? They removed this objective:

"Secure the interest, support, and participation of the residents of the Authority and the surrounding area in the activities and development of the Authority’s facilities."

Quite an interesting response to the summer they had.

New food mart on Court St

Post image
43 Upvotes

The other day I was asking around to see if anybody had tried the new food mart where Mac Shack used to be, but nobody I knew had tried it! I kept seeing people inside, but I couldn’t find Google reviews or social media posts since it is very new. I thought I’d do some boots on the ground work and spend my money so you don’t have to!

The right side of the store is a smoke shop (vapes bongs etc) y’know, cus Athens can never have too many. 🙂 the rest of the store is like a convenience store for students. Toilet paper, lots of drinks, lots of munchies. The restaurant part of the store is a pickup window in the back. I thought damn okay this could be a hidden gem??

It’s edible. I don’t even know if I would call it fine. In all fairness, they had a line of about 10 people or so. It took everybody at least 25-30 minutes to receive their food. Most people looked annoyed, but thankfully I wasn’t in too big of a hurry. I think around 8-9 people walked in & out because the line wasn’t moving.

This might get better with time, and hopefully their food does as well.

Interestingly they don’t serve their platters with hummus/tzatziki/a house sauce, but instead serve it with a “white sauce” that they should tell us is just ranch(because it is), and then a hot sauce similar to cholula. The rice is very bland, but cooked well. The falafel is burnt to a crisp and has no flavor, possibly the worst I’ve had.

This is the only time I’ve been upset with myself for choosing to eat local instead of just grabbing chipotle or jimmy johns 😔

Looking for guitar instructor

Hello everyone!

New to Athens and new to the guitar as well, looking for an instructor for weekly lessons. Preferably with availability after 5, as that is when I get off work on the weekdays.

I have tried to contact two so far who popped up on Google and have had luck with neither.

Thank you!

The mosquitoes are terrible right now

Want to enjoy some autumn time outdoors but with the expected results of climate change, that's taken third row seating. I absolutely am sick of the mosquitoes and can't go out and stand for a few moments before they descend on me. Even with Off spray they are vicious. They even show up in Uptown. I'm just so tired.

Hi everyone! I was wondering if there are any active book clubs or reading circles in Athens. If so, I’d love to know when and where you usually meet. I’d be interested in joining. Thanks in advance!

Southeast Ohio Christian Academy in Nelsonville

At the last Nelsonville city council meeting, it was revealed that SOCA has acquired the JFS building on the square. They intend to use it as a 9-12 space.

They need changes to the zoning permit, which is why they were in front of council last night.

If you live in Nelsonville, you should voice opposition to this effort. This will only serve to further draw funding out of our already strained public schools. It will put more of our young people in front of skewed and unscientific instruction. And it will place our local businesses at the mercy of a private, partisan, and unaccountable institution whose idealogy is rooted in puritanical nonsense.

Cheapest vets?

Hi guys, I recently adopted a cat and she is having ear problems. I really want to get her checked out soon due to the discomfort she is in but because of a lot of sudden medical expenses on my end, I have a really tight budget. Can you recommend the most affordable clinics? And give me the price estimates you paid? Thanks so much!

Traffic Advisory Issued for Tomorrow's Chick Fil A opening

Per Athens PD Facebook:

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: CHICK-FIL-A OPENING – OCTOBER 15, 2026

The new Chick-fil-A in Athens will open tomorrow, Thursday, October 15, at 6:30 AM. We anticipate heavy traffic along East State Street, particularly near the restaurant’s access road. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area if possible and allow extra time for travel.

The Athens Police Department will be monitoring traffic in coordination with Chick-fil-A staff to help maintain traffic flow and promote safety.

Our biggest concern is left turns into and out of the access road. Please use extra caution, be patient, and remain alert for other vehicles and pedestrians.

A REMINDER ABOUT RIGHT-OF-WAY: Drivers have a responsibility to yield when crossing oncoming traffic. Even if another driver waves you through, that gesture does not give you the right-of-way. Always check that all lanes are clear before proceeding. A driver in one lane may wave you through while traffic in another lane is still moving.

Please be courteous, follow traffic laws, and put safety first. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as Athens welcomes this new business!

Marigolds?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I'm working on an altar for Día de los Muertos and need marigolds. Anyone know where I could get some in the Athens area, preferably Mexican and enough to cover the top of a coffee table? (I made the mistake of Googling "Flower farms near me" and now know where I can get cannabis flower ... interesting, but not what I'm after). I'm willing to buy or trade for them ...

Looking to Rent

Hi all, I am a graduate student looking for a new apartment/house to rent when my lease is up in May. I am a very clean and responsible tenant looking for a clean, well maintained place to live. Preferably looking for an individual landlord as opposed to the large companies in Athens. Looking for 1-3 bed property with central heating and air and in unit laundry. If looking for roommates, I am a woman looking to live with other women. If you are looking to rent out a property or have any leads on properties please reach out, I'd greatly appreciate it!

More bad news for WOUB - Ohio University sued over sexual harassment allegations

Remember the station manager who resigned earlier this year after being placed on administrative leave? Now we know why that happened.

This stuff could not come at a worse time for a place like WOUB, reeling from the elimination of federal funding in a place like Athens that has been decimated of many news sources by their corporate overlords. And to think these actions by the director being mishandled by the university is downright appaling.

Journalists are needed more than ever, and WOUB is a great place for them to learn. But these allegations are a black eye on the station and all that may have been going on over the years.

I do commend the editorial independence that WOUB has on reporting on itself. Far too often, stories like these are covered up by their corporate overlords.

Local Warnings (e.g. The Side Bar)

I made a post a few months back about an incident regarding the Side Bar.

The intention of the original post was to serve as a public service announcement that a venue which explicitly opens its doors to queer and underage patrons seems to pick and choose where they draw the lines of what is appropriate when it comes to patrons touching/kissing/assaulting others. I didn't make any statements about the employees or business owners, but I did share my own troubling experience. My first post was deleted, and no explanation was offered, so I am unsure what option I am offered other than to re-upload, as I still wish for my statement to exist as a PSA for any curious minds. (I would be happy to speak directly with a mod about the reason for deletion, but no conversation was had/options were given before the thread was hidden/deleted.)

Even if one doubted the veracity of my claims, or my intentions in sharing them, there were multiple people who responded with their own concerning experiences from visiting the Side Bar. I don't take naming a local business in a negative sense lightly.

I just want marginalized communities and minors to be armed with as much knowledge about where is and where isn't safe as they can be.

My original post is included here as an image, along with the screenshot of the mod announcing they're hiding the post with no explanation.

Best place to flier?

Hey all! I’m coming into town tonight to hang up some fliers for the Jewel City Zine Fest in Huntington, WV (November 14 for the curious!) Where are some good spots to hang a flier? I’m somewhat familiar with Athens but definitely not in the know.
