anywhere i can buy powdered dairy free milk?

• Upvotes

i’m going backpacking for a few months and i want to bring some powdered milk bc i expect if i take a coffee at the hostel breakfast or cheap local restaurants there will be no options besides cows milk.

usually i drink soy at home but i am open to other options. so far all ive found was powdered coconut milk at cole’s but weirdly it has dairy milk in it :(

Why are our main options sugar free, gluten free, love free, joy free for processed/ready made foods?

This is a bit of a rant, and it may come off as naive. I am very much aware of my privilege and how this is a first world problem. I am also looking for a genuine answer, but also just to see if anyone relates. I’m a new vegan, I’ve ate mostly whole foods, it’s been a lot to adjust to in some ways, easy in others. I’ve been told the narrative that being vegan is expensive, and it really only is when it comes to the meat alternatives and dairy alternatives. Whilst I’m loving eating more lentils, nuts, fruit, veg, soy etc, I still gravitate to ready to eat things as a full time uni student.

There is one thing that I cannot understand, as packaged, processed, convenient and semi affordable vegan foods is already quite slim in numbers. Tell me, why are our options sapped of flavour? Because it seems like to me, companies are like “oh we don’t have a gluten free version of this, OR a vegan version. I know, let’s make it one single product, and better yet, let’s also make it sugar free because clearly these people are health conscious”. This genuinely baffles me. I can appreciate how these products are enjoyed by the vegans who have coeliac disease , diabetes etc. but I do not think corporations have this in mind when they make them.. I do like having a healthy diet, I do enjoy making my own muffins/cakes whatever, but am I not allowed to want something commercially available that has no nutritional value but is tasty and vegan? It costs the company less to make these things, but they seem to have this idea on what vegans look for, and we’re all buying into it. Like vegan chocolate, are we deluding ourselves about these? They’re $8-12 for the ‘good’ ones and they’re NO ADDED SUGAR. I want chocolate not the fucking cocoa with a hint of xylitol. They’re like “let’s add pistachio and any kind of nut to cover this up. Let’s go crazy and even add a little salt and fry some sugar free sweetener, call it salted caramel.”

This line of thinking also seems to infiltrate the cafes. I think there’s like some sort of secret alliance with all the cafes, because the vegan options are all the same and they are all devoid of happiness. No I do not want to eat your flourless date almond nut sugar free slice for $9. Actually yes I do, I’ll call the way it crumbles as soon as I take a bite a sensory experience. No thank you, I do not want a protein ball?? Why are so many vegan products loaded with protein, i think I’m eating more protein as a vegan from plants than when I wasn’t. And what really is the cherry to my no artificial dye, natural cake, is the fact that if veganism isn’t seen as an extreme political issue by people, then it’s almost definitely seen as a dieting issue. I complain about the fact there are no vegan options, the response is some targeted response how I shouldn’t be buying processed foods because it contradicts my care for the environment and animals or its “have a cheat day, treat yourself.” 😐 what is happening. It doesn’t help that I live in a smaller regional area, and I know things are getting better, but I feel like this problem is not even addressed because we all just rejoice at any new product that is tolerable and labeled vegans. Anyway, thoughts?

Why Do Main Stream Restaurants & Conventions only provide "filler food" for Vegans & Vego's???

• Upvotes

This is a pet peeve!
There are so many easy, delicious & healthy options that cost next to nothing to prepare.

BUT When I'm at a convention or meeting with food (alternative drop) and I call ahead to mention I'm a vegan I get "filler food" garnished with greenery.

By this I mean last night I was present with a mini poke bowl that was mostly white rice, garnished with edamame beans, carrot and radish.

The main was a massive mushroom risotto. More white rice!

How much refined carbs do they think a vegan eats!!!

It's crazy, especially if, as me you chose vegan as a plant forward diet and specifically avoid refined carbs.

When I was in hospital I was fed on pasta and a watery tomato sauce, Mexican aka, rice with the same watery tomato sauce with a few bean. Pizza with watery tomato sauce and mushrooms.
So rice, pasta and bread.... barely a vegetable in site!

Some restaurants are fabulous. But when you go with a group of non vegans, or hang out with friends at the pub it's a whole other story.
Coleslaw scooped from a bucket of mayonnaise???? Mayonnaise???? Vegan???? And a side salad with chips. I don't eat chips and never have because my health maters to me...

Am I just a pain in the arse??

PS I'm not talking about specific vegan or vego places. I'm talking about the places you end up for work, because you're hanging out with friends, kids school events etc.

Pippa and her staff are always so lovely and the food is great. Drinks are awesome too. This will feed our family for two days! Pictured: cheeseburger focaccia x2, magic 8-ball cupcakes x2, peach and custard danish, Cookie Monster crookie, and Mars Bar doughnut which got a bit smushed during travel (completely on us). Drinks: iced matcha with vanilla sea salt cold foam and pumpkin spice latte with caramel popcorn cold foam. So delicious! Only open Friday and Saturday mornings so get in early!

Aussie Vegans, would you be up for helping me test a nutrition and meal-planning app I’m building?

G’day everyone, I’m studying a Bachelor of Nutrition and have a coding background. I’ve been building MorselMetrics to make my own meal planning easier. A few people at uni started using it too, and I’d love some feedback from outside that circle.

The idea is to help you work out what to eat across the week and see how it stacks up against your nutrient needs. You can put in your own recipes, check the nutrition per serve, swap ingredients, and build a meal plan with a shopping list. It uses Australian food data and Aus/NZ nutrient targets.

There’s also vegan autofill and an “Improve this day” option that suggests additions when your plan is low in certain nutrients. That’s something I’d really like feedback on—do the suggestions make sense, and are they meals you’d actually want to eat?

I’m also interested in how well it matches the ingredients you buy, especially things like fortified plant milks and nutritional yeast, where brands can be pretty different. Missing nutrient data is flagged rather than counted as zero.

It’s free during the beta, with no card needed. You can try a recipe without signing up, or make a free account to use the planner and save recipes. The core features will stay free when I eventually add a paid tier.

If you’ve got a regular vegan recipe you wouldn’t mind chucking through it, I’d love to hear what worked, what it got wrong, or what was confusing. I’m building this myself, so specific criticism helps heaps.

Cheers!

Meat culture reinforcement in our cities

Post image
55 Upvotes

This is an entrance to Steak House on Swanston st in Melbourne. It's sad that in modern day and age we have advertisement that directly equates meat with strength and masculinity. This is the center of Melbourne, thousands of people see this picture every days and get this association formed in their brains, especially young people. There is nothing illegal about this of course, but it is just sad to see the meat eating culture being reinforced in such prominent way while anything related to plant based products remains a rare occurance in our cities.

Hope you guys can help me out with this. I’d love to find a small gift that has somewhat ethical for my sweet girlfriend. She’s a big animal love but especially “shunned” animals like pigeons and Ibis. I was thinking something like a tshirt or plushie would be nice!

Breakfast cereal for a high protein diet

I've developed Type II diabetes and my dietitian wants me on a 1600 kcal / 120g per day protein diet. That's an average of 30% protein - yikes!

I'm trying to make a vegan version of this diet & so it looks like a lot of tofu, tempeh, protein enriched pasta, pumpkin seeds, peanuts, etc. The dietitian wants meat, hard cheese and high protein yoghurt but I'm trying to avoid it.

I cant find any Australian high protein cereal with no added sugar. In the UK there is Surreal High Protein Cereal with 39% protein and no added sugar, ingredients include soy & pea protein.

I was thinking on making my own high protein muesli with lupin flakes, oats, pumpkin seeds, peanuts, almonds, and maybe desiccated coconut, chia, flax.

Thoughts?

Hi team!

My family are holidaying in Coolum Beach for a week and would love some recommendations for eating out! We're staying in a holiday house with a kitchen but it'd be nice to eat something I haven't cooked. ☺️

TIA!

I need advice

Hi guys idk who this will reach or if u will even see it, but it’s 2am and like most nights, I am finding myself unable to sleep.

What does a person do when the world is this quiet, but so deafeningly loud?

I feel all of the cries of animals that are begging for help; I feel their pain in my chest and flesh and bones and it keeps me awake wondering why existence is so cruel. I get this feeling during the day also, but not as bad as nighttime where I have no distractions.

I feel sick to my stomach knowing their cries will be unheard, and their pleads for their lives will not change the outcome of their deaths. I lay here in my bed with a blanket over me and feel guilt overwhelm me.

I feel sick knowing nobody will care as much as I do, and that there is nothing I can do to save them. Nobody will ever listen. I am horrified, and the longer I am vegan the more horror consumes me.

What am I supposed to do? I am terrified. Their pain reaches me and I can’t save them. I feel helpless.

If so.. did you have to pay any additional customs duties or taxes? Haven’t found it stocked in Aus but open to that if anyone knows where? Looks like a good snack option!!!

Tastes revolting

My usual soy milk was unavailable so I picked up a carton of Woolworths macro organic soy milk without reading the ingredients. Turns out it has 17% soybeans.

Tastes powdery. It ruins my morning oatmeal and induces nausea. I do hate to waste good but this has to go.

Maybe others like it, but I certainly can't recommend it.

what is the best yogurt!

hi all - recently switched to a plant based diet after being vegetarian! I really relied on Greek yogurt in the past for protein - and I also loved the taste. What are the best recommendations, ideally with a good amount of protein and a good taste!
