Estimating is not encouraged here, this subreddit is for sharing knowledge in the Autobody industry.

Estimating needs to be done at an autobody shop or with an insurance agent using the latest software. Any advice given in the subreddit pertaining to costs for repair will not be accurate and could be misleading.

  1. If your car is undriveable do not ask for advice on how to quick fix it.
  2. If your repair is going to be shoddy, half assed or of very low standard it will be deleted.
  3. A quality autobody shop is where your modern car should be fixed, it can be dangerous for yourself and others if improperly repaired by not following procedures.
  4. Advice on what happens during your repair is encouraged. Ex, "How is my quarter panel welded on" or "How much filler should be put on a dent".
  5. Techs. Talk more about yourselves, your processes, shops and things that keep you going in the trade. Share your day and what you have learned. We all work at different levels and learn so much from working together.

HELP! I have a question. Am I toast?

Hello everyone,
Yesterday I may have bit off way more than I could chew. I bought a 2013 frs with a ton of hail damage. It was a decent price and has good bones but the body is ROUGH.
My question is, is this possible to bring the body back at all? And if so what type of work would be done? When I first saw photos of the car, it looked like it would just need a ton of pdr. When picking up the car, I realized it’s probably cooked way past that. Im not TOO concerned about fixing replaceable parts like the hood & fenders as much as I am the shell. I just want to see if something like this can even be repaired

I bought a 2024 ioniq 6 and the front bumper is in a pretty bad shape. Dont know what the previous owner did with the car but it looks like he was drifting it daily in gravel.

Can I restore these rock chips?

Thanks.

Hello,

My husband picked up his leased ‘26 Jeep GC on Wednesday. As I was walking by it this morning I noticed these little imperfections or defects. My concern is that they will rust as we live in the Northeast. Are these cause for concern? How could it be fixed if it is a problem?

Acceptable quality? Mismatched BMW Alpine White after collision repair. Thoughts... tint correction/repaint needed ?

Hey everyone, I got into a solo accident with a Jersey Barrier on a rainy day & let's just say the barrier won lol. I had my front bumper, fender & rocker panel replaced & yesterday when I stopped by the body shop to drop off a part I took a look at the work & the first thing that stuck out to me was the shade/difference in paint. It seems to me that either the body shop resprayed using the factory paint code & didn't adjust for tinting or they didn't properly blend into the existing panels.

For the record I paid out of pocket & didn't go through insurance so I do feel as though I'm entitled to a correction & I absolutely want it to be as seamless as possible.

The part that stuck out to me most is the bumper/fender to hood transition & I can see it clear as day but ofc when I brought it up I was told that it'll look different in the sun/outside & that they did tint/blend it & etc... The rocker panel also looks extremely bright as well, more-so in person I might add. Additionally the A pillar sticks out as well but that wasn't damaged & not a part of the repair.

My question is am I tripping, does this look as bad as I think it does ? & should I push to get this repainted ?

Got a small section of rust where it seems the previous owner stepped to get in and out of the truck. Dont want it to get bigger or cause more damage. Any insights are welcome, also open to just taking it to a paint shop if the price is right but feel like i could tackle it myself.

Question about the Trade Pure methylene dichloride as paint stripper

Hi, i'm thinking about replacing quite a lot of bodywork in my old and dented fiat panda. Since in Italy pandas are as popular as they should be, finding panels of sort shouldn't be a problem if not for one aspect: colour.

My plan is to ignore colour, get the best pieces i find and then strip them all to bare metal.

Looking around for paint strippers i've read about this chemical, now banned, that worked like a charm. So i looked some more and found a retailer selling 99% pure methylene dichloride for relatively cheap.

What i'm trying to understand is, assuming i can buy it at all, exactly how dangerous it would be to use in the open at this level of purity and if it's as effective as actual paint strippers. Thanks!

PS. after stripping i plan on spraying the panels with acrylic clear coat, is it at least close to the right product?

HELP! I have a question. Advice about repair

Hello! I don’t know much about cars so please pardon my inexperience with proper terms/processes, but I was hoping to get perspectives on whether or not to proceed with a repair.

I recently scraped my car against one of those yellow pillars in a parking lot. Originally thought it would just be a cosmetic fix but after getting a few quotes, nearly everyone I’ve spoken to says the back door needs to be replaced. They are saying that the safety bar(?) inside the door has been compromised (see circled area in photo) and that it’s a safety issue if my car was ever T-boned.

While I understand this is a safety issue, I never drive with anyone sitting in the back seat and don’t anticipate ever needing to do so. I feel like the safety issue wouldn’t really apply to me right? (I’ve confirmed that the front door isn’t compromised). I don’t care too much about the aesthetics of the car, mostly would just like the dents fixed if possible and the paint touched up a little to protect the car. But no one I’ve talked to seems to be willing to do anything short of replacing the whole door because, as I understand it, it would be a liability for them. (There was only one very small auto shop that offered to do a cosmetic fix but I’m a little wary because the shop owner looked at the door without doing a thorough assessment and said it was fine, so idk if I actually trust what he said). Also I’ve been told that it’s industry standard to blend the paint across adjacent panels when painting the car - is this true?

Would appreciate your advice! Thanks!

HELP! I have a question. Is this rust worth repairing?

I bought my car (2017 ford focus hatchback) in 2021, and last year I moved up to the rust belt without knowing that it was a thing, and I’m worried that my car is beyond repair. I haven’t been able to take it to my local mechanic in a while because of financial issues, and now that I’m finally in a okay financial position, I’ve been looking into getting general maintenance done. I looked underneath and took pictures today, and I’m concerned it’s a goner. With even brake service being so expensive now, I know I can’t afford significant body work. I could afford a car payment, but I figured I’d post here to see what everyone’s thoughts are.
Thank you all for your help in advance!!❤️❤️

EDIT: Thank you guys so much for all of your help!!!! My (25f) grandfather died last year before he had the chance to give me all of his car wisdom (my dad sucks). We were going to restore his 1983 Mercedes 380SL together when he got better, but sadly cancer took that experience away. Working on my own car makes me feel a bit closer to him in a way, and it makes me feel better to know that I didn’t let him down by letting my car go to shit! Thanks again for the help, you guys are great!!💖💖

I’m thinking bad substrate not compatible with 2k?

Steel bumper sanded it down 400 grit sprayed sealer and then first coat of base this happened. Did not occur on the other panels painted.

RUST Rust spots on hold

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi there,

I'm 19 and purchased a used camry back in March. Before that I had a really old beater car so I didn't care too much about appearance upkeep, but since this one is in good condition I was to make my investment last so l've just recently started doing some research into car paint maintenance.

That being said, I washed it for the first time since I first got it—definitely need to be doing this more regularly given I park under a tree-and I noticed some rust spots right on the front of my hood closest to my front license plate. I was wondering if anyone has any advice in terms of treating this? Also, is tree sap/debris something that causes this? These weren't there when I bought the car, so I would imagine that'd be the culprit since there is no other possibly damaging environment my car is in if that helps inform. Is there a specific product I should be looking at? Car paint pen? Taking it to a shop? I have no prior experience with this kind of stuff, so any tidbit helps. Thanks!
