Reminder: Buying and selling bags is against the rules of this sub

Seen this pop up a fair bit lately. Because people aren't reading the rules I've started banning people temporarily for this.

Please read the rules people. It's really not that hard and don't get upset if you break the rules and get punished. It's on you to read those.

The reason it's not allowed is I don't want this sub (and me) to be responsible for having to moderate that crap. Go look at r/EDCExchange or other subs that allow it. They have systems in place to hold people accountable.

Had this bad for approaching 20 years of near daily use! All the bits still work and are intact. One point of failure on the strap stitched up, still going strong. It’s been on countless hikes, work and vacation trips, daily home>work>home trips, 1000’s of miles of motorcycle rides. Never been washed, never failed me. 13 out of 10.

Trakke

Just came here to let anyone interested in Trakke products to STAY AWAY! They send out defective products that are clearly not inspected. The bag I got came with a pocket falling apart on the side and customer service took almost 3 MONTHS to respond about the stitching defect. Then they said ‘you can have 10% back, 15% towards another product, or we will fix it for you ship it to our US based team but they only have one person who can stitch and she’s going on maternity leave.’

Question Repair the mesh pocket on this backpack

Thumbnail

Hi everyone, does anyone have any tips on how to repair the mesh pocket on this backpack? As you can see, the tear is fairly small and the mesh can be pulled back together.

Should I simply sew it back together using UV-resistant polyester thread, preferably with a bit of stretch? Or would it be better to sew a patch of mesh over the damaged area?

I’m thinking of doing it myself, using a few tips and tutorials. I’m not too concerned about how it looks, because it’s already damaged anyway. Besides, it’s a long-distance hiking backpack, so a few battle scars are part of the deal!

Still, I’m pretty annoyed about it, especially since some people have managed to keep theirs in great condition after years of use. Guess I’m a bit of a brute after all! 😂

Question Modern backpack with vintage look

Hey!

I'm looking for a backpack similar to this one that I can buy brand new, rather than second-hand on eBay.

I'd really appreciate any recommendations for good models or reliable brands!

Rework Toshi 2.5L first impressions

Just got my 2.5l in xpac.

First impressions - good and bad

Good:

\- Great materials (xpac version)

\- I love the tan interior

\- Feels spacious

\- great internal organization

\- the front and back access pockets are spacious enough to hold a large phone, which is great

\- straps seem comfortable and the buckles are less annoying than I thought they'd be

\- the strap hardware is amazing.. the removable buckets to take the strap off are the best implementation I've ever used

Bad (or maybe I'm not getting it):

\- The fabric flap over the front quick access pocket impedes the zipper, I don't care if it gives some water resistance if it significantly impairs my ability to easy reach and pull the zipper

\- the straps on the bottom.. why is the bottom magnetic pocket so cavernous? What am I supposed to use it for? The bottom straps are too small to hold a water bottles securely, which is what I thought they were there for. Can someone explain this to me?

Comparing to my Alpaka Flight Sling Pro 2 (also 2.5L)

\- I REALLY love the water bottle implementation on the alpaka, I already miss it and I haven't even worn the toshi outside yet

\- the compartments and organization on the toshi are better for me and while the alpaka has a flatter profile, it feels like a 1.5L with my pack out

\- as I'm writing this, I used the bottom cavern to hold the strap after I removed it, and this is actually pretty clutch - the magnetic closure kept the straps in a lot better than I thought it would and I had to shake it very hard to get the strap to fall out. When I put the strap in the bottom cavern, it didn't compete as much with internal space as I thought it would.. this is always a challenge with the alpaka

I am very curious how others pack it out... please share your thoughts...

Anybody have experience wjth the Sierra Designs Nexus Lite?

Looking for a new bag, I’ve always really liked SD stuff, I have the high Route tent for a few years now and really like it. This bag caught my eye because I was already looking at the flex capacitor or trail for their volume adjustment, and while this pack isnt as adjustable upwards I do really like the zipper less part, and having a slightly more organized bag (I like pockets). This bag reminded me of the Kelty Trailogic PK50 from like 12 years ago, which is similar with the zipper less + organization part. Anywho, let me hear any thoughts even if you haven’t used it!

Question Has anyone ever used this kind of bag? Is it worth the price point?

It's called the U Bag from UJUAL. I saw ads for this, and it seems pretty innovative because it instantly turns into a desk mat when u open it up. Although it does have a high price point, I was wondering if anyone has any opinions about this firsthand?

Furthermore, I take short commutes to college and study in different places. Mostly with a MacBook and iPad. So I feel more inclined to hit purchase on this bag cuz it supports that minimalist nature.

OneBag Finally found my end-game, KING of Slings 👑

Thumbnail

I don’t usually post on this page but I just really wanted to give my thoughts on this BEAST of a sling I’ve been using for a while now. I truly consider it my end game sling. This is the Aer Go Sling 2.

To begin, I’ve used many sling bags (last photo got just a few examples) in my search for my ‘end game sling’ and I’ll say one thing to start, there is no ‘best sling’ or ‘king of slings’ like what some people say online. One sling could be the best in one persons eyes but the same sling in the eyes of another could be seen as lacking or bad. It all comes down to what you are using the sling for, your loadout and the like.

In saying all this, I don’t have a very heavy loadout, I don’t hold heavier items like kindles, iPads, consoles, bottles or the like, I like to have a sling which is more so a pocket reliever, subtle, comfortable to wear, conforms to my body well, has softer materials and has great internal organisation.

I’ve had experience using many well known slings such as slings from Bellroy, Alpaka, Aer, Tomtoc, Cotopaxi, Evergoods, AbleCarry, Rework Toshi and many many more. In all of my uses of all these slings and much more, after heavy deliberation and research, I can confidently say that no matter how many slings I’ve bought and used, I always go back to the Aer Go Sling 2.

I feel that this sling completely defeats the likes of the Bellroy Venture Ready 2.5L, the Tomtoc Aviator 2.5L, the Rework Toshi 2.5L, the AbleCarry core Sling, the Aer Day Sling 4, the Evergoods CAS1, the Alpaka Flight Sling 1L. This sling is just awesome.

As for my loadout, I like to have my phone in my sling so including the phone, I also have my AirPods, car keys, wet wipe pack, bandages, glasses wipe, pen, slim power bank, a pack of gum, a perfume atomiser, small hand sanitizer, and even with all this I feel comfortable wearing this sling, it doesn’t droop or become a brick on my body, it sits comfortably with room to spare!!! I can STILL fit more items if I wanted to inside this sling.

As for its use, I’ve used this sling for daily work commute, I work in the airport and in addition to everything it already has in it, I add my airport cards and keys which works fine.

I’ve also used this sling for trips overseas, I’ve taken it to Malaysia, in the airport as a travel sling as well as in another country it performs absolutely amazingly.

I also use it for day to day outings to the mall or grocery shops and it is great.

There are times I’ll use another sling for an outing or a situation and then I’ll end up wanting to go back home just to use this sling instead. This has happened countless times with this sling lol.

It’s so versatile as a sling in many different situations, and no, this is not sponsored or anything, I just genuinely love this sling so much no strings attached.

It’s comfort is next level, I even have had instances where I genuinely forgot I was wearing this sling with around the same loadout I mentioned prior.

It’s to keep in mind that with the softer material it isn’t going to be as weather resistant as some of the previous examples of slings I mentioned, but for where I live in Australia which is a more tropical climate, there isn’t much heat or rain that is consistent throughout the year. It’s changing weather and so, the lack of PU coating on the zippers is actually a plus, it makes opening this sling and closing it with one hand so easy, in fact, it’s much easier to open than any of the other slings I mentioned before.

It’s strapping is great as well, small, subtle, doesn’t dig into my neck even when it’s packed, and the little magnetic component for the strap to be taken off easily is actually great, unlike what some people have criticised this strapping with online, I’ve never once had an issue where it opened on its own EVER. I haven’t had this issue with any sling I wear that has this feature, it genuinely seems quite strong and safe.

(Just to add, the A.R I custom added to this sling is my initials, as well as the two zipper pulls I added.)

In conclusion, this truly is the King of Slings for me

Considering Osprey (or other) for a Uni bag

Hi all! I've been researching for a couple of days backpacks for university (mine failed me), and I find the Osprey bags to be a better fit.

I need something that has a lot of space, because I bring laptop (13in), ipad, chargers, products and meds, and gym clothes. I'm also starting a new program in Jan (nursing), and could bring scrubs as well. I like the chest straps, I'm 5'2, I find longer bags quite ill-fitting on my back, and walk 12-15k steps per day during my commute.

I live in Montréal. It rains, it pours, it snows, it needs to be waterproof! My last bag got all of my things wet :(.

If you recommend another brand go ahead!

Best backpack for tropical fieldwork?

Hey everyone! I'm a biologist/entomologist based in Panama, and I do a lot of fieldwork in tropical forests. I also enjoy hiking, camping, and traveling.

I currently own two backpacks:

  • Osprey Flare: My everyday backpack for work, mainly for the lab and office.
  • Osprey Nebula: I use it to carry clothes for 2–3 day field trips.

Depending on the location and conditions, I sometimes take either backpack into the field, but they end up getting wet and dirty. I'd rather keep them in good condition, so I'm thinking about getting a separate backpack exclusively for fieldwork.

My current options are:

  1. Patagonia Refugio 30L
  2. The North Face Recon
  3. Osprey Quasar 26L

I'm looking for something durable and comfortable for fieldwork in tropical forests, with enough room for research gear and the essentials I need for a day outdoors. Ideally, something that can handle getting dirty and wet without being too bulky.

Which of these would you recommend? I'm also open to other suggestions!

Thanks

Travel Help Picking a 20L bag for College and Travel

Hello everyone!

I'm looking for some advice on choosing a backpack for my upcoming study abroad trip to Europe!

I'll be spending 20+ days urban backpacking around Europe, with a few days of hiking mixed in. After that, I'll be taking four-day trips every other week, primarily flying budget airlines like Ryanair and easyJet. Ideally, I'd love to have a bag that fits under the seat so I can avoid paying extra baggage fees. My 20L Matein backpack has enough space for me to pack all I need for the 4 day trips, so I don't think I'll need more than that. But I really hate how painful the backpack is to carry. So I need to replace it.

I'm completely new to one-bagging, and I already know I'll probably struggle with overpacking!

**A few things I'm looking for:**

Enough room for a 16-inch laptop

Comfortable for a smaller woman

Relatively affordable, although I do plan to buy secondhand to save money

**My biggest questions are:**

Would it make more sense to buy one 20L versatile backpack or do I need another bag for the longer trip?

Are there any particular brands or models you'd recommend for someone with a smaller frame that are good for every day as well as short traveling?

Thank you!

Travel Looking for a comfortable travel backpack for my daughter

Hi everyone! I’m looking for a travel backpack for my 7-year-old daughter that will hopefully last her for a few years as she grows.

I’m thinking of something around 24L: not too small, but not huge or overwhelming for a child her age. My main priorities are:

  • Comfortable to wear, with good weight distribution
  • Relatively lightweight
  • Durable and well-made
  • Good organization, with multiple compartments to keep things tidy
  • A nice design

She currently has a 16L Fjällräven Kånken in Chalk Rose, which looks great, but it’s not the most practical and it’s starting to feel a bit small. Also, having just one main compartment makes it difficult to keep everything organized.

Are there any brands or models you’d recommend? I’m also wondering whether 24L would be a good size for a 7-year-old, or if that might be too big.

Thanks in advance for your help!
