Remember When Extreme Studios Claimed The GIJOE License?

Let's go back to 1994. Hasbro and Marvel's done with GIJOE, and it's still seen as a hot license. Many studios are vying for it. Rob Liefeld claimed Extreme had it in mid-1994. By October it was clear that wasn't true, and the license eventually went to Dark Horse. It was fortuitous to Extreme that they didn't get it, as it flopped badly. Still, GIJOE and Extreme in the 90s would have been quite the intoxicating mix!

I think you’re getting two things mixed up. I was a fan of both in the 90’s and don’t recall Rob ever claiming to be doing a G.I.Joe comic back then, nor was a quick google search able to find anything. Now Hasbro did a relaunch after they stopped doing ARAH and then Sgt. Savage to G.I.Joe Extreme with had a Liefeld-esque flavor to the figures (big muscles, pouches, oversized guns), but he had nothing to do with that.

My source is Wizard magazine #49. What I wrote is pretty much word for word what was written, in my own style, of course. I guess any and all evidence of this has been washed away.

This must have been before they'd finalised plans for Sergeant Savage. The article makes it sound like the license has just come up though, so I don't know. Either way I found it an interesting bit of info.
