Meta Discussion

Greetings r/Centrist members, With the new year, we figured now would be a good time for a Meta thread. The goal of this post is to clarify some of our updated rules, provide transparency, and give the community at large an opportunity to share input and feedback for the sub. It seems most of our regular members are familiar with the posting requirements, but there has been some lingering ambiguity concerning several of our rules, particularly rule 3. The language has changed a bit over the past several months, but we have settled on the current verbiage and are happy with it. When it comes to rule 3 (articles and videos), we’re simply looking for a neutral summary to accompany any article or video. It doesn’t need to be a college dissertation or a PhD thesis, but we’re also looking for more than just rewording the title. A basic overview highlighting the relevant portions of the article is all we ask, the intent being to facilitate a quality discussion. Every mod here is a volunteer, and none of us has any desire to nitpick every summary as if we’re a high-school debate teacher.

……………

We also ask that for the summary, you avoid copying large portions of the article. Since there has been some confusion over this in the past, I want to clarify that this does not preclude you from utilizing direct quotes or information which is public domain. In other words, if an article quotes an individual, you may use that excerpt in your summary. If an article is discussing a public document (i.e. the Constitution), and the language of that document is included in the article, you are allowed to use it. This is related to DMCA violations, so as long as you’re not just plagiarizing the author’s narrative, you should be fine. But please use these excerpts to complement your summary as opposed to just posting a bunch of quotes without any context. The summary aside, if you want to include your own commentary, that is perfectly fine. Concerning the use of archived links, the intent is to prevent people from bypassing the rules. As long as they’re not the primary link when you post, you can include them in the body text or a comment. Also, please note the rule requiring any post titles to match the article. It’s far easier for us to consistently apply that than debate if someone is editorializing. Regarding long form discussion posts (rule 4), I’ll just say that they should be a legitimate attempt to start a quality discussion. If you come in guns blazing with a biased or overtly antagonistic post, it’s gonna get removed. If it’s low-effort (super basic questions, baiting users, etc.), it’s gonna get removed. There is obviously more moderator discretion involved here than for news articles, but if you put some effort into your post, keep it neutral, and make sure it’s relevant to politics, you should be fine. As it relates to AI, Chat GPT generated long-form discussions may be removed at mods discretion. They can help supplement your post, but shouldn't be most of your post.

………….

Moving on, a quick note about the mod team. Being a political sub, it’s a delicate balancing act between letting people express their views, while also trying to maintain civility. Last year, there were complaints that the sub wasn’t moderated enough, so we’ve been trying to consistently enforce the rules for everyone. All that to say, we do our absolute best to remain fair and impartial. If there is a post or comment which toes the line, it’s not unusual for us to discuss it behind the scenes before taking action. Every mod action is logged as well. If I remove a comment or post, the other mods can see it. If another mod approves a comment or post, I can see it. If we ban anyone, the other mods see it. If we get a modmail, all mods can view it. We’re not a hive mind, but we strive to be as consistent as we can. The comments section is open, so feel free to add your two cents. The rest of the mod team and myself will be checking in periodically to answer questions as we can. Depending on how much attraction this gets, I’m not sure we’ll get to everyone, but the mod group will discuss any inputs and critiques we see users bring up. Please keep comments respectful and constructive. Thanks all.

Long Form Discussion What is exactly centrism ?

I honestly do not know what is exactly centrism. Are Starmer and Macron centrist ? Is centrism any ideologie but moderate (for example christian democracy instead of conservatism, social-liberalism instead of social democracy and liberalism) ? Can centrisme work with any ideology ? I am not a centrist, I am a libertarian and i honestly don't know much about centrism. I would be very grateful if you could answer my questions !

Edit: do you guys think technocracy is centrism ?

Judge extends order restoring White House access for POLITICO, CNN and MS NOW

A good article detailing how U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly restored Whitehouse press access to three major news networks.

The ban from the President likely violated the first amendment while also not following the basic rules of informing the news organizations first that specific behavior or comments would result in them being banned.

The case from the administration is furthered weakened by public comments made by the President and Whitehouse officials that the reason for the ban was unsubstantiated accusations and not an action taken by the networks or their employees.

Trump waives key Russia-related sanctions, tariffs before they take effect under new law

Thumbnail reuters.com
101 Upvotes

Neutral Summary: President Donald Trump has waived key Russia-related sanctions and tariffs shortly before they were due to take effect under legislation he signed in September 2026. The law, backed by the late Senator Lindsey Graham, was intended to increase economic pressure on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine and included tariffs of up to 100% on imports from certain countries purchasing Russian oil and gas. Trump said the waiver was in the U.S. national interest, as implementing the measures could contribute to higher energy prices and strain relations with major trading partners such as China and India. The decision has drawn criticism from lawmakers who argue that it weakens pressure on Moscow, while Russian officials have welcomed the move. The waivers will remain in place until Trump or his administration determines that further action is appropriate.

(Measures waived: Measures waived: 100% tariffs on countries that are buyers of Russian Oil, 500% tariff increase on Russian goods, Sanctions on Russian-linked individuals and entities, Russian affiliated financial institution restrictions, Restrictions on Russian state-controlled entities, Restrictions on financial transfers, Stock-market restrictions on Russian Entities, Investment restrictions for US citizens in Russia, Energy-sector restrictions on exporters to Russia, Russian sovereign debt restrictions (Restricts US Citizen from paying off Russian Government Debt) International financial messaging restrictions, Uranium-related measures (Restrict imports to Russia) and also Waived additional provisions listed in Sections 102–111 and 117 of the law, including specified sanctions and restrictions.)

Trump: "We have 5 states where your child goes off to school as Tim and comes back as Tammy 3 or 4 days later."

In his recent speeches, trump has repeatedly stated a story like this: "We have 5 states where your child goes off to school as Tim and comes back as Tammy 3 or 4 days later. It's true. And teachers make a decision. 'Goodbye Timmy I love you so much, I'll see you later.' And you say, 'Where's my son? My son is in the hospital.' Can you imagine? They don't even need approval"

Commentary: It's not even necessary to disprove this lie. Everybody, even his cult, knows he is lying. His cult has chosen to accept his constant lying as a fun personality quirk, like the double jerk off dance.

Every lie he tells damages the nation. Every one. 2029 can not arrive soon enough. We must rid the nation of this endless spewer of lies.

US News/Current Events U.S. budget deficit swells to almost $2 trillion for fiscal 2026, up 12% in a single year

Thumbnail
cnbc.com
69 Upvotes

Summary:

The United States ended fiscal year 2026 with a $1.992 trillion budget deficit, an increase of $217 billion, or approximately 12%, from 2025. That makes it the third-largest annual deficit in American history, surpassed only by 2020 and 2021, when the federal government spent heavily responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. The government collected a record $5.4 trillion in revenue but spent approximately $7.4 trillion, meaning spending grew considerably faster than revenue. The deficit also increased from approximately 5.8% to 6.2% of GDP, indicating that the shortfall is growing relative to the size of the economy.

One of the biggest contributors is the rapidly increasing cost of servicing the national debt. Gross interest payments reached approximately $1.36 trillion, while net interest exceeded $1 trillion for the first time. Social Security spending approached $1.7 trillion, and Medicare spending climbed to nearly $1.1 trillion. These three obligations alone account for a substantial portion of federal spending. Interest costs are especially significant because they don't finance new infrastructure, defense equipment or government services. Instead, they represent the cost of borrowing money to cover previous obligations.

The revenue picture is more complicated. Individual income taxes increased approximately 7%, generating more than $2.8 trillion, but corporate income tax receipts fell to $381 billion, partly reflecting tax provisions in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Tariffs generated record gross customs revenue, but the Supreme Court's decision invalidating many of Trump's tariffs resulted in approximately $145 billion in refunds, significantly reducing their net contribution. Consequently, even with record tax collections and higher customs duties, the government still experienced a larger deficit because spending increased more quickly than revenue.

The growing deficit is also contributing to concerns in the Treasury bond market. The national debt has exceeded $40 trillion, while 10-year Treasury yields recently climbed above 5%, levels not seen in more than two decades. When investors demand higher yields to purchase government bonds, borrowing becomes more expensive for the Treasury. Those higher yields can also affect mortgage rates, business loans and other forms of private borrowing. This creates a difficult cycle: the government borrows heavily, interest costs increase, and those additional costs place further pressure on future budgets. Inflation expectations and Federal Reserve policy also influence yields, so the deficit is not the only factor.

US News/Current Events Florida sues Discord, claims site is 'hotbed' for child predators

Thumbnail marconews.com

An article detailing a recent lawsuit from the AG of Florida against another social media company.

Discord (a program I use) hosts over 200 million users and allows them to create their own private or public server which provides a place to chat, post pictures and share voice communications.

The 65 page lawsuit alleges that Discord has not done enough to protect children from predators and is suing the company to pay damages to the state citing the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act.

The Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier was responsible for instituting "Alligator Alcatraz" in the everglades. When the local Miccosukee tribe filed a lawsuit against the government for building in the Big Cypress National Preserve they faced retaliation by President Trump vetoing bipartisan legislation that would have provided flood protection to the Osceola camp. The detention facility was shut less than a year after opening due to a variety of problems and lawsuits.

James Uthmeier was also held in contempt of court for continuing to enforce a Florida immigration law the district judge had blocked in a pervious ruling. Uthmeier is quoted saying "If being held in contempt is what it costs to... stand firmly behind President Trump's agenda on illegal immigration, so be it."

He is also known to open investigations into President Trump's personal enemies such as Special Counsel Jack Smith and JPMorgan Chase for discovering evidence of President Trumps fake elector plot. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trump_fake_electors_plot

Long Form Discussion How should we define election interference vs lawful speech (or critique) of our voting processes?

Really, I am asking the broader group here a question and looking for open and honest discussion on the topic of when "speech" really translates into a broader threat or obstacle to our voting process. I will "opine" a bit on this, but really, I am not sure what the right answer is here, but I believe we do have an issue here tantamount to walking in and shouting "fire" or "gun" in a crowded theater.

Relevant to this is that over the past 24-48 hours, there has been an absolute onslaught of MAGA personalities in the "online sphere" (Rumble, Twitter, Telegram, Truth Social, etc.) who are trying to "impress upon" their audience a certain narrative about the upcoming elections, for which many states are already collecting early (no excuse) ballots or will begin so in the next week. That narrative is that there is widespread fraud and a lack of integrity among election officials across this nation. Suggested responses range from declaring a "national emergency" from the Oval Office as a pretext to seize election materials or voting machines, or even to outright declare martial law to "pause" the effect of the election or the counting of ballots unless and until [... unclear ...].

I am quite "pure" in my general views on speech and not seeking to temper or "chill" the speech of people, or their ability to organize or effect change through agency in this country. I think it is key to a functioning democracy. But I think there is a point where, as a nation, we have a really compelling interest that trumps that. I am not sure exactly where that line should be drawn, and I don't think it should be treated lightly. But the objectives of the speakers/writers/influencers here are not really compatible with a functioning democracy. They are advocating "extra-Constitutional" remedies which are unlawful to solve a problem they are inventing from whole cloth that they say they have identified in an election which has not even taken place yet.

The conspiracy this group of MAGA personalities and influences allege is so enormous as to absorb every single constitutional concern, which I believe is how you end up with people taking themselves "so seriously" while presenting a patently false narrative and trying to push "that" as a pretext to just "suspend elections" or "seize votes and voting equipment" from [... all states, states they don't like, who knows ...].

So, then the question is, do we push Congress to legislate on the issue of speech as it concerns elections at some point? What crosses the line from being actual critical, protected speech about policy or politics and into just outright organized election interference or an attempt at building an insurrection in public? I think protest and political discourse are important, but not so important perhaps as to "green light" saying any possible thing under the sun to try and disrupt or conspire to disrupt an actual election. The 2026 midterm elections are not "sneaking up" on the Trump administration. They have controlled both chambers of Congress for nearly two years and have failed to bring any legal or structural changes to elections, there has barely been a serious attempt to do so outside of lawless executive orders which never stood a chance of becoming law. EOs to not make new law, they never have and never will. Just as with the last MAGA election conspiracy theories from 2020, MAGA seems obsessed with "squaring a circle here" where MAGA-leaning government is in power, and under that MAGA-leaning government purview, they trust and doubt the election results more than when their opponents are governing. Dare I suggest they look inward to their own rot rather than outward towards wild conspiracies?

Going Hungry in Trump’s Economy

Summary: As many of us knew before the election, Trump's promise to restore affordability were a lie, and the actually state of the economy is more nuanced than the golden age he continuously proclaims. Rising food and gasoline prices combined with stagnant wages are also not surprisingly affecting working-class Trump voters more than their white collar counterparts.

In Yavapai county, where Trump received 66% of the vote in 2025 the Atlantic interview residents describe their daily experiences which are at odds with the administrations more optimistic view of the American Economy, with many depending on food banks just to survive. This dependency is exacerbated by the retrenchment of SNAP benefits under the Big Beautiful Bill, and and rising unemployment in the state as a whole.

Additionally, small business owners are suffering from falling demand and higher input costs, while immigration has disrupted operations and caused an emotional toll on families which is leading to a break between those who voted for them and their continued willingness to support both him and the party he leads.

Commentary: The GOP is about to get hosed up and down the ballot, but I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a polling miss, this time in the Democrats favor. No one likes the Dems (at least not among the people I know), but the situation is such that they cannot handle the cruel indifference of the GOP or the utter stupidity and incompetence with which they are governing the country.

US News/Current Events Trump adviser sees ‘a whole bunch of good news’ in inflation report

Thumbnail
thehill.com
30 Upvotes

Summary:

The September inflation report shows that consumer prices are accelerating again, even as the labor market continues to weaken. Annual inflation increased to 3.7%, up from 3.4% in August, reaching its highest level since May. Energy prices were the biggest contributor, rising 5.2% in a single month and 20.4% over the past year. Gasoline prices alone increased 9.1% in September, accounting for more than half of the month's overall inflation increase. With gasoline averaging more than $4 per gallon and diesel exceeding $6, the ongoing war with Iran is creating substantial pressure on transportation and household expenses.

White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett acknowledged the energy price surge but described it as temporary, arguing that other parts of the report showed encouraging developments. Food prices were unchanged from August, while prescription drug prices declined 1.2%. Hassett said the administration's efforts to reduce food and medication costs would continue producing results. The White House also maintained that elevated fuel prices were a temporary consequence of the conflict with Iran rather than evidence of a broader deterioration in affordability.

However, inflation outside food and energy also accelerated. Core inflation increased from 2.4% to 2.6% annually, suggesting that price pressures extend beyond the immediate energy shock. This matters because the Federal Reserve generally pays close attention to underlying inflation when determining whether interest rates need to remain elevated. Navy Federal Credit Union economist Heather Long characterized the report as evidence that inflation is becoming more widespread and persistent than previously expected.

The impact on purchasing power is particularly important. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, real average hourly earnings declined 0.5% in September, meaning consumer prices rose faster than wages. This doesn't necessarily mean workers received pay cuts in dollar terms; it means their earnings purchased less after accounting for inflation. With annual wage growth around 3% and inflation running at 3.7%, the pressure on household purchasing power is becoming more noticeable.

The report also complicates the Federal Reserve's next decision. September's employment report showed only 29,000 new jobs and unemployment at 4.2%, suggesting hiring has slowed substantially. Normally, that would support holding interest rates steady or eventually reducing them. But with inflation accelerating, the Fed has less flexibility to stimulate hiring without risking additional price increases. Financial markets responded to the inflation report with higher Treasury yields and renewed expectations of another interest rate increase, potentially in December.

U.S. ambassador warns Canadian politicians: ‘Keep your nose out of American politics’

Thumbnail
ctvnews.ca
33 Upvotes

Summary: The US Ambassador to Canada is warning Canadian politicians that their actions could be interpreted as election interference, and is threatening a response.

My take: I'm not sure if this would even make the news in the US, but it sure does here. I think it's important that more Americans see firsthand how their government is treating (former) allies. This is just one more example.

Canada did not choose this trade war. Trump did that.

It was Trump's decision to escalate the trade war by applying blanket tariffs to all Canadian imports.

Rightly or wrongly (I believe it's the latter), Trump believes that he is using tariffs as a negotiating tactic. A strategic 'tool' to get other countries to do what he wants them to.

With an economy far outsized by that of the US, we have no choice but to be strategic. (We also have a leader who is intellectually capable of strategic negotiation, but that's another matter.) So yes, our tariffs target states where it will cause the most political aggravation for Trump.

(Edit to add: I won't even get into the numerous times the US, Trump most recently, has blatantly and directly interfered in elections in other countries.)

So in Trump's world, he can use whatever tools he wants to beat other countries over the head. But when those countries respond, he sees it as unfair. Pretty typical of a bully, I suppose.

If you're wondering, a couple of years down the road, where all your friends and allies went ... this is where. This is how senior officials from your government are speaking to and about the countries that have been friends and allies. I know that there are a lot of Americans who are just as appalled by this as we are, but (speaking as a Canadian) I sincerely hope that all of you use the upcoming midterms as a way of sending that message loud and clear.

Europe From no cards to many: Europe warns Trump not to waste Ukraine’s leverage

Thumbnail

A good article detailing the current political situation between Russia, Ukraine, America and Europe.

Ukraine has made significant gains this year thanks to expanding it's long range missile capabilities and targeting vital Russian industries such as oil and gas, including Moscow itself.

These attacks combined with greatly increased support from European allies has limited Russia's ability to fund it's invasion and has caused global gas prices to increase.

Donald Trump is desperate to lower gas costs as much as he can prior to the mid term elections and is negotiating with Russia to lift sanctions while American allies attempt to convince the President to increase sanctions instead to further push Russia into abandoning it's invasion while it is weakening.

As of this article there has been no attempt by Russia to end the war or stop targeting Ukraine's own gas industry and power plants. Meanwhile Ukraine has currently complied with the presidents demand that they stop attacking Russia's gas industry.

US News/Current Events Trump says Ukraine, Russia agree to energy strike ceasefire 'because I said they agreed'

Thumbnail
kyivindependent.com
55 Upvotes

Summary:

President Donald Trump is insisting that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to stop attacking each other's energy infrastructure, even though neither country has publicly confirmed a finalized ceasefire agreement. Trump first announced the supposed agreement on October 11, declaring that it would take effect immediately. When reporters questioned him the following day about the lack of confirmation, Trump responded, “They agreed because I said they agreed.” His remarks have added confusion over whether an actual agreement exists, what facilities it would protect, and when its terms would become enforceable.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the announcement caught Kyiv by surprise, but emphasized that Ukraine is willing to participate in a genuine energy ceasefire. His condition is that Russia must stop attacking Ukrainian power plants, electrical grids and other energy infrastructure in exchange for Ukraine halting strikes on Russian oil refineries. Zelenskyy has argued that an agreement protecting only Russian refineries would be unequal, particularly because Ukraine has very limited operational refining capacity. The Kremlin, meanwhile, has declined to confirm Trump's announcement, leaving the status of the proposed ceasefire unresolved.

Tucker Carlson Sparks Backlash With Claim UK Shouldn't Have Fought Hitler

Carlson self published an interview last week with the UK's Rees-Mogg where he claimed that the UK should not have fought in world War 2 for two reasons.

  1. Germany had a intelligible right to Poland that it didn't have to the UK and thus Hitler surely wouldn't have invaded the uk.

  2. The war was not economically rewarding for the average citizen of the uk to warrant the loss of life.
