Forever Camping is a total game changer.
Yesterday I set up my camp and someone said 'thx'. My heart was pounding but I managed to type 'yw' once my hands stopped shaking so much. He layered before it was sent but I still think we're BFFs now. I'll probably be the best man at his WoW wedding.
Kudos to the devs for making Azeroth social again!

I wish I could go back and tell my younger self that in the future WoW will give buffs for taking a break to smoke weed.

You clearly never raided as a mage. You just get one of those water tipping birds to tap 1 on your keyboard to spam fireball (or frostbolt in MC) and take bong rips the whole boss fight. Trash is when you actually had work to do.

u/Luminair 3h ago
We had a paladin with a keyboard macro that spammed FoL on the main tank even pretty far into AQ40

The cognitive dissonance to introduce camping, and then go and introduce anonymous mega realms with giga sharding is astounding

u/RegisterLucky2583 5h ago
Yep the mega server thing is a neat idea in theory but in practice its terrible and antithetical to the whole idea they were trying to sell with Forever.

u/Mr_Pastee 1h ago
I would honestly take paid lvl 60 boosts and WoW tokens over megaservers. At least there'd still be some hope of having a server community then.

u/Mr_Pastee 6h ago
The fact that 99% of this sub doesn't realize that is what really blows my mind. They're all going nuts for camping and completely ignoring the fact that megaservers/sharding will destroy any sense of community the game might've had.

GW2 had megaservers, but you still had a home server and it placed you in your home server's maps until they filled up, then spilled you into overflow maps when population surges required it.
Completely random layering feels awful.
•
u/_Cromwell_ 4h ago
Oh yeah I completely forgot about that. I actually played gw2 for a long time. I forgot about this feature because it worked so seamlessly and well that I literally actually forgot it was a thing because I never noticed it working / functioning really well.
•
u/door_of_doom 29m ago
I think it is worth saying that GW2 also has loading screens between zones, and the wonkiness around zone boundaries is mostly where Forever is getting hung up, so GW2 doesn't have a directly transferable solution for that aspect.

When realmless announcement first happened I remember thinking, if they had a way to organize and group players on a small realm in a way that didn’t feel terrible, we’d see evidence of that in retail. Let’s say retail realms have 200k players and like 10-20k concurrently online players — if sharding can’t be implemented there without a choppy, divided experience, then how on earth is one big giga realm going to just solve the problem through giga sharding? They claimed they had some engineering break through, but it’s beta and it feels very off.

I start looking for scenic spots rather than highly travelled spots. The cliffs over the harpy area rather than down in sun rock retreat in stonetalon was my favorite spot to just lay down a campfire, a faction banner and my sleeping bag. I hope once I left to go kill harpies some other person came across the campsite and found it nice...

Agreed. Now that I can no longer run dungeons with friends and get decent exp, I have now gotten my social fix from from sitting 60 seconds at a campfire. That allows me to recharge my social batteries and go right back to solo questing to level 60.

Don’t forget about unrolling your sleeping bag to get that three minute nap for the XP buff! Then you can get the campfire buff at the same time!! The efficiency is crazy. Then you can use the Legacy points to make your 15 minute XP food last for 30 minutes so you only have to rebuff twice an hour to keep up the 8% XP buffs. TOTALLY BUSTED.

Yeah seriously give us some for 100% food and faster/flying mounts god damn it.. it’s not classic, we have era for that. We are ready for some real QoL improvements!

Yesterday I went to do Guns of Northwatch and saw a warrior just starting it. We grouped up and did most of the quest without saying a word to each other. Near the end he said he didn't care about the escort quest but would stay if it was up. It was. Then he grabbed a beer and we had a conversation about it. He then recommended a brand of tequila I wasn't familiar with. I plan on buying a bottle the next time I'm out. I will probably never see him again.
That's fine, because I will still go out and buy that bottle of tequila and I will think about the nice conversation I had with a stranger.
This kind of post really mocks the spirit of that kind of interaction and I find it deplorable.

When we were kids, we would make friends out somewhere and have a total blast playing with them, or just talking to them, and then never see them again.
I don't blame folks for it, but we've totally lost this skill as adults, especially in our culture that is more socially isolated than it ever has been, and among the most depressed, anxious, and bitter.
Just live in the moment. Play the game. Say hi to a stranger. Relax and have some fun for once. Our generation has the absolute coolest toys to play with, so have some damn fun.

for real, in the original launch i was playing with a friend and saw someone run by and we said "let's invite this stupid shaman", now we've been friends for decades
•
u/Jparks43130 1h ago
The post is a little mean spirited, but it has a point. Meeting new friends and enemies is kinda ruined when they randomly disappear mid interaction

I agree the camping system is very cool and I love it, especially with the new weather effects. Give us back the +4 spirit original “cozy fire” buff from classic and add an inverted “cold” -4 spirit debuff in cold weather snow zones that we can clear at a camp.

Let's not be so cynical. This is a moment when you MAY interact and create new memories. It's an opportunity. Like everything in life, making connections takes some effort
I get the joke, but I don't get the angle... Would you rather they didn't do it? I can run most dungeons without saying a single word, and sometimes I do. Other times, I talk and make new friends
•
u/Manticzeus 4h ago
It’s not an opportunity if they take it away from you with their “new layering tech.”
You said you get the joke, but everything you said afterwards demonstrates you didn’t.
•
u/midsizedopossum 2h ago
The layering does not usually affect camp fires.
You are the not the arbiter of whether they got the joke or not. Don't be a douche.
•
u/Manticzeus 1h ago
I’m not being a douche, I’m pointing out the context clues in his statement. The joke is they added a feature that is suppose to promote socialization in an mmo to then also add in “new layering tech” that makes it hard to make organic social connections. He demonstrates his missing the point by talking about opportunities to make social connections and completely disregarding the entire punch line of the joke.
•
u/midsizedopossum 1h ago
The joke was not about the layering tech. The point about the layering tech was an extra... layer.

I love the camping mechanic.
The layering on a megaserver problem kinda ruins it though ngl. I'd rather have servers than this.
•
u/zbertoli 1m ago
No you wouldn't, the servers are terrible. The population always drops until everyone migrates off to join a mega server. Then blizzard has to consolidate the servers and its a huge thing. People complaining about names, guild names.. wanting to stay on their dead server, its such a shit show. It happened to my first server in classic, netherwind. Then it happened to the mega server, feralina. Servers are a bad choice.

I'm dreaming of a similar mechanic for cooking. Like preparing a group meal at camp or, preferably, a designate area in the major cities. I imagine there'd be addition benefits to the food buffs... Longer duration, persistence after death.

Man that is what I really look forward to in forever. So glad they killed dungeons. I just love this incredible social experience

Hmm. I'd like to socialize more. This person just showed up beside me, at this new campfire mechanic that all players understand is supposed to be used to meet new people. Should I ask them about their day? Perhaps what their in-game goals are? I've got time at the moment to make a new connection. People like talking about themselves, no? So they would probably appreciate if I made some sort of icebreaker comment. This really is the perfect time; we're right beside each other, there's nothing to do but wait, and perhaps they'll like to group with me for a bit if I asked. This could really be a great opportunity to make a new friend and take full advantage of the unfettered social lubricant Blizzard designed to facilitate these sorts of first interactions.
On second thought, I'll just be spiteful and weird, type only two letters, never make any attempt to contact them again, and then go on reddit and mock Blizzard for not fixing my own crippling incapacity.

People are the reason the "social experience" is dead.
It has nothing to do with game design.
Nothing forced us to be social.

It has nothing to do with game design.
It has everything to do with game design.
Nothing forced us to be social.
Players are motivated by incentives. Why do you think people complete quests instead of spending all day hunting critters? Because there's no incentive to do the latter.
If the game encourages and rewards socializing, people will be social. If it doesn't, they won't.

Unironically excited about camping for RP purposes, even on PvP rules.
