It’s just Ivy dealing with her own problems before she was called out by the Parliament of Trees and her supporting cast before she was defeated by Helena Bertinelli and decided that enough is enough and wants to see Harley again. That’s it. Overall, this comic is something.

I like that we get to see Fred Meyers manage his civilian life enthusiast his supervillain and heroic lives as Comeback. This includes managing his romantic relationship with a woman named Carla, who was revealed to have a Symbiote named Tantrum. Also, Fred and Comeback planning to get into space so that Comeback can return to Klyntar. Overall, this comic is good and off to a good start.

It's hilarious that Beast is supposed to be the smart one and does the most idiotic thing of sending the mutant xenomorph swarm to Earth. Gotta wonder how the hell they got Kitty though.

Surprised by how much I’m enjoying this. Not been hooked on this era of X-men but this is fun

I jumped back into X-men with this cross over/a few of the prologue issues before it. I’ve really enjoyed it too. I have never been a big cyclops fan, but I actually enjoy him on this. I can’t wait for more from it.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #35

u/Substantial-Two6650 16d ago
I’ve been debating on jumping in on the current issues of Conan or getting the trades and starting from the beginning. How has it been going currently? Should I start from the beginning or is it good to jump in now?
4
u/blankedboy 14d ago
I’d say start from the beginning of the Titan run in tpb. You really won’t be disappointed, as it’s been great from the very start
3
u/Substantial-Two6650 14d ago
Thanks for that! I watched the original movie with Arnold. It that long ago and it got me pumped into reading it
2
u/archway_13 13d ago
You can do either, imo. Issue 35 is part 3 of an arc, so maybe good to back to issue 33. But in general each Conan story arc stands its own. No back reading needed. However, if you want to go back to issue 1, do it. First of all, there are plot threads that are being woven throughout (mostly subtle and just for additional enjoyment - not required to read). More importantly - you’ll get to enjoy some killer stories and modern-Conan-classic artist Robert de la Torre. His art was made for Conan.

SUPERMAN KINGDOM OF ZOD SPECIAL #1
4
u/JingoboStoplight4887 17d ago
I like that the Superman Family and many other heroes were able to defeat past Zod and his forces before past Zod was sent back to his own time and Ursa told them not to look for them. Also, President Castillo asking the Superman Family to leave El Caldero, Jon telling Clark that he became Tomorrow Man to forge his own path, past Clark telling Lois about his father Jonathan Kent, Booster Goldman telling Jon that he’s a big fan of him, J’onn using his powers to mindwipe past Clark of his trip to the future (with past Clark telling J’onn that he’s wants to forget about this), Kara creating the Fortress of Solidarity with the Super-Force, CK telling Clark that he’s going to take it easy on being a hero and try to find a way back to his Earth before he told Clark that he’s should take Lois flying, Conner and Lena learning something from the future, and Conner (and, by extension, the Young Justice generation) wanting to be seen by someone before he encountered Lex (who wanted to talk to Conner as father and son). Overall, this special is fine, but the crossover is disappointing just like Shadow War and Dark Crisis.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1000
16
u/NairForceOne Ultimate Spider-Man 17d ago
I haven't read it yet, but (aside from all the other comments here) it's super telling that the pull of the week is FF #17 instead of Amazing Spider-Man ONE-THOUSAND.
Incredibly disappointing that this incredible milestone is such a nothingburger.
8
u/gosukhaos 17d ago
Even as someone without a constant rage boner for modern Spider-Man comic books its pretty mediocre.
Felt more like a marketing exercise then a comic book celebrating a huge milestone issue for the biggest comic book character on the planet

Man, am I glad that I stopped reading Spider-Man back in 2018. I've kept up mostly through online discussions, osmosis, and an issue or two here and there, so I generally know the current plot, but MAN DID THIS SUCK.
For a big commemorative #1000 comic, the main story was pathetic. The pacing was all over the place, the art itself was good, but absolute crap at conveying WTF was happening half the time or how Peter and Cormac got from point A to point B, which the writing also failed to help with (Going full supervillain/superhero in a hospital lobby and not getting caught? HOW?!). I liked the tender moments of May's memories here, but they are inserted so awkwardly it's hard to even know what's happening and NOTHING got solved. It's like the main story is the backup.
The side stories were mixed.
The old man Peter thing was weird, but a bit charming at the end, even though I don't like parts of it.
The Goblin story with Harry's funeral was good because, thank god, a writer remembered that Norman is actually an irredemable monster and doesn't buy the idiotic redemption arc the current story has him on.
The whole Spider Queen thing for Miller's story was weird and REALLY out of place; I didn't like it at all and had no clue what was happening with the disjointed art.
Ironically one of the best stories in this entire comic, that was supposed to be about Aunt May, is a freaking 5-page TRIPLE H comic about Uncle Ben that seems to get Peter as a character better than these career comic book writers... Triple H ASM run when?
The Bendis story was alright and is probably the only one that feels like a real anniversary story, though man that trophy design sucks.
The random western Spider-Man story is very out of place and feels like a very dull saturday morning cartoon in a way I didn't like.
I don't know why people have a hate boner for Slott, as I do sorely miss his ASM run, but him and Marcos Martin hands down have the best story in the book with "Now I Can Rest" showing Peter's origin story from the Police's perspective (also great that they recognized Ditko in front of Stan for once). I have long said that Slott needs to do SOMETHING ELSE besides Spider-Man as he's run out of ideas as much as I love most of his run, but a story like this to end the book shows he still has some gas in the Spidey tank when he needs it.
Overall, the shitty main story of the comic seemed like a trivial last priority in comparison to the side anniversary stories, with the Spider-Queen one being the worst of the bunch. Secret Son Cormac randomly turning into the most comically cliche'd super villain in an issue that doesn't even resolve anything is rather pathetic for a #1000 issue of Spider-Man, and reading #999 before it feels like everything before this random reveal was filler. May is an old woman with her own problems... Why does she now have to be wrapped up in cape-shit with Cormac/Ravage? I love May, but #1000 would have been the perfect issue to finally let the old lady die in a heartfelt way like the PS4 Game, not with this mess that she now has the most cliche soap opera condition of random amnesia, a long lost son, and supervillain antics. ASM hardly seems interested in any of its civilian supporting cast anymore unless they're involved in some supernatural nonsense, so I don't know why we keep May around besides to invoke needless drama like this.
Something that jumped out at me though more than anything is I think we are losing the art of storytelling here. Every artist in this issue can make pretty pictures in a vacuum for sure, but comics are very reliant on visual storytelling. So much of the art here, namely from Larraz, Gleason, and Momoko, is hard as fuck to follow. Panels just seem to happen in both weird placement, orders, and progression. I can barely follow the story because the art is not conveying its flow properly and it feels like some in-between panels are missing; a far cry from how they used to be when I was an avid comic reader. It's style, not substance. Meanwhile, McGuinness, Ramos, Martin, and Immonen are masters at showing the visual representation of these stories in very short order. I'm sure there are other Marvel books that are really good visual storytelling, but this issue striked me hard to show who was good at visual storytelling and who desperately isn't. It's both the writer and the artist's job to make that work, so I dunno what was happening with some of these collaborations... Though once again, THANK GOD JMD REMEMBERS NORMAN IS AN UNFORGIVABLE DICK.

Biggest and most important milestone of Marvel’s history is fucking dogshit LMFAO
12
u/Ezracx 17d ago
The main flaw of these stories is the heavy-handedness with which they try to "celebrate Spider-Man's history". This begins with the main Kelly/Larraz story, that uses a really stupid plot point that's supposed to be "important" to Peter's life and history, and makes his memories a central focus. But that aside the writing is not bad and I really liked the scenes from Aunt May's POV.
Bendis/Immonen, Lieber/Camuncoli, and Miller/Momoko have the good backup stories, in that order. They don't try too hard to be celebratory, instead they focus on writing a good story, and they succeed. Bendis manages to do both, so that's why I think his is the best one here.
Triple H/McGuinness and Slott/Martin are mid. You can't just say "hey remember Uncle Ben" and think that'll make me tear up! Martin does a lot of work to carry Slott's writing with some great art but it still doesn't quite hit for me.
Hawley/Gleason and DeMatteis/Ramos are just outright bad, here the heavy-handedness is in full swing with how the characters talk about their feelings and I don't care for the umpteenth "moving on from Gwen" story anyway.
Overall a mixed bag, obviously doesn't live up to its task but it was never going to.

u/Acceptable_Sign_8708 17d ago
I had pumped myself up that either they would remember the marriage or Aunt May would at least realize he’s Spider-Man. Haven’t read yet but I feel I would have been spoiled by now if either of those things happened 😫

u/Acceptable_Sign_8708 17d ago
Surprised at how much I liked the main story. Only real complaint is instead of the whole arc in this issue, we got the backups instead. Found May’s memories to be touching, and would be shocked if it doesn’t end with re-establishing that she always knew he was spiderman.

Been seeing a lot of negativity on this thread so thought I’d share my opinions as someone who actually really enjoyed this issue!
Pepe Larraz knocks it out of the park again, proving why he’s one of the best artists in the industry. Joe Kelly introducing a new villain was a bit on the nose/out of nowhere, but the way he interweaves all of Spideys history into one villain was actually really well done, the flashbacks with May and Peter were beautiful.
Although I’m not the biggest fan of Gwen Stacy being Peter’s true love, I understand those who feel that way and still really enjoyed this story about aging and coming to grips with past trauma, with again beautiful art by Patrick Gleason. Peter’s grandkids carrying the mantle/being named after people in his life was awesome.
Requiem for a Goblin was another great short story about trauma and learning to live with grief. Losing someone close to you before having the chance to reconcile your differences is heartbreaking, and I think it was displayed really well here. Also Humberto Ramos bringing his A game with that classic style of his.
Frank Miller and Peach Momoko…man I’ll just say I didn’t realize how badly I needed this combo before now and hope they work on many more projects together! Peach beautifully captures Franks weirdness and they just compliment each other perfectly.
Triple H (and Rob Fee) have a well done short story, celebrating lost loved ones and continuing bonded traditions. This one, albeit really short, genuinely surprised me.
Mann, I didn’t realize how much I missed Bendis’ voice for Spidey. Quick quips, beating up random baddies, and being late to his own celebration (of course Cap no life America was still there lol) was just a joy to read. Immonen also does a great job, really loved some of the panels on this one.
Lieber brings the quirky and crazy here with a time travel adventure bringing Spidey to the Wild West. Crazy light hearted fun, encapsulating that Bronze Age feel in the best way!
Dan Slott and Marcos Martin close out with a quick story bringing that Silver age style and feel. Loved the backstory on the cop who told Peter about uncle Ben.
Now I’ve definitely had some problems with recent interpretations of Spidey, and still think his new stories could be doing way more to encapsulate his humor, sadness, and bravery. But I really enjoyed this issue in particular! If you’re a fan of Spidey I recommend to give this one a read.

u/Substantial-Two6650 16d ago
Bendis and frank miller/peach Momoko’s stories were my favorite. Slott’s was right there for me too. Bendis’ story was so touching though. It made me emotional reading the last page or two when Peter finally made it to the meeting. I haven’t been reading the current spider man. I was definitely interested in the main story. I don’t know though if I will pull the series or not though. I may reread it to help me make up my mind. Like everything spider man I’ve seen mixed reviews with Kelly’s work. I was happy with what I read though.

Giving my thoughts on each story as I read them.
Ravage or whatever
I honestly expected it dislike but I kinda liked it??? Look, it's a kinda hamfisted way to get some throwbacks, but what I really appreciate is getting to see how May felt as things were happening. The old broad just won't die so in a way, this #1000 is for her too. May's basically had her own clone saga!
Cormac is also Plot Device the Character but lowkey I kinda want to see how and when he's done this to other people, stealing parts of their memories/soul for his own gain.
And look. I kinda knew he was a villain right from the jump, because of course he is. But Peter's always fought the hardest when it gets real personal, so yeah, I guess Mays real son stealing her memories of Peter would be about as personal as it gets. Fair play Joe imo
One thing I really liked though: Cormac commenting on how he liked Peter when he let the robber go, and then later being pissed when he finds out it was the robber who killed Uncle Ben. It feels like an obvious choice, I still I really liked it. For one, it shows that Cormac wouldn't have necessarily learned the same lesson as Peter and just isn't as good of a guy. Makes the moment where Cormac hears May call him 'her hero' resonate more. Also, we've never really had a villain straight up see his whole origin story and then give a voice to Peter's greatest regret. Peter's spent so long blaming himself and now this guy is like "yeah you ARE as awful as you think you are. Worse even!"
Sucks that the story is split into parts though. I haven't read the rest, obviously, but I have to imagine this story will have Peter get beat down real bad but then have a big come from behind victory. Feels like that should have just been all in this issue. It's already oversized, just have it be an extra long story.
Maybe we cut the stories by not Spider-Man writers and do this whole story DESIGNED to celebrate the past #999 issues in issue #1000? Just a thought.
On to the next one! I doubt I'll have as much to say about them lol
Still Standing
Okay, ya got me! I did think it was going to be a depressing dementia story! Weird that his son is named Miles in this. And the grandson doesn't have a name, I checked. Is he supposed to be nameless so we can all use him as our self-insert?
Great art!
JMD Victory Lap
Solid writing, really wish they paired him with someone who's pencils were a touch more classic.
Peach Momoko and Frank Miller: Together At Last
This was lowkey sick but why is it in this. You're telling me you couldn't sell a one shot based on this creative team? It just has to be a backup in issue #1000? Get a grip.
The Triple H one
I can't believe Triple H didn't remember that Aunt May canonically loves professional wrestling.
D-Man baited me. I really did go "oh look it's daredevil! Oh, never mind." out loud
Bendis is Coming
Okay so just need to say, in case Bendis later tries to assert otherwise, this story must take place before the Zeb Wells run because Spider-Man and White Rabbit are definitely on 'remembering their name' terms.
This is the first story to actively make me laugh TWICE so I think that's a win for Bendis.
"Firebrand. Listen... Maybe just quit." got me and the "fair enough" at the end of the fight. Lots of personality to this Peter and he still comes across competent and good at what he does while not being invincible. And he missed his his own party, classic Parker Luck. But then he gets to have a nice moment with Cap. Solid imo!
Cowboys I guess
RAWHIDE KID?? okay I guess lmao
Just want to point out that in 2 of the stories so far, Peter and MJ are together and in the Noah Hawley one, they clearly got married and had a kid they named Miles. Or I guess now that I'm thinking about it, maybe that's Mayday and she just married White Miles? Whatever.
It's almost like MJ is super important to the character and this series.
Nice tribute to Stan and Steve.
Dan Slott and Marcos Martin are back
Huh, I quite enjoyed that. Nice perspective on the origin and I really like the ending.
However, Dan Slott forgot that the burglar, according to issue #200 (or maybe the lead up to it) invaded the Parker household because it used to belong to New York Al Capone and jail myth said that New York Al Capone's treasure was maybe up in the attic. Five boroughs burglar? I think not!
Or maybe he was also that idk technically nothing this story conveys actually contradicts anything I just said.
Oh well!

The Slott/Martin short is pretty solid but this is one of the worst milestone issues I've ever read.

u/baroqueworks 17d ago
All i will say is the Kindred erasure in the murals of Spidey 1000 characters is insulting!!!!
Yeah yeah legacy characters weve seen a million times cool cool but its not a real 1000 celebration if Judas Traveller and Kindred arent there
A real sign o the times with Spidey's 1000 being this mid as Marvel Comics moves their office from NYC to LA

u/droopymaroon 16d ago
Haven't finished the back up stories so I can't comment on those, but I actually liked the main story here. It uses a fairly interesting plot device to kinda celebrate and retread some of the core aspects of Peter and Spider Man. It wasn't anything revelatory or earth shattering, but I think it was pretty successful in what it was trying to do as a milestone issue celebrating Spider-Man. I am a bit curious where it goes from overall thought it was kinda solid.

It’s just Peter fighting Cormac, who was responsible for wiping Aunt May’s memories of Peter because he’s jealous that Peter lived a good life with Aunt May and Uncle Ben since they loved Peter as their true son in 1947. Let’s hope that Peter will defeat Cormac and give Aunt May her memories back. Overall, this comic is weak, and it is predictable that Cormac is a villian who goes by Ravage.
For the first backup, I like that Peter was able to spend time with his kids and grandkids before his grandson learned that Mysterio was responsible for creating an illusion of Gwen Stacy so that he can ruin his life, causing Peter and Mysterio to have a talk and for Mysterio to give Peter closure to Gwen. Also, Peter with a mustache, which looks good. Overall, this backup is fine.
For the second backup, I like that, back in 1993, a married Peter and MJ talked about Harry Osborne’s death and if he really was Peter’s best friend better they attended Harry’s funeral and Peter talked to Harry’s ghost about what happened. Overall, this backup is good.
For the third backup, I like that Peter was able to defeat the Hand and save someone who can transform into a giant spider creature. Overall, this backup is interesting.
For the fourth backup, I like that, back in the 1950s, Peter and Uncle Ben went to a wrestling match together, with Uncle Ben telling Peter how proud he is. Overall, this backup is good.
For the fifth backup, I like that, back in 2008 or so, Peter was able to defeat three villains before he had a talk with Steve Rogers. Overall, this backup is fine.
For the sixth backup, I like that, back in the 2000s, Peter traveled to the Old West and had an adventure with the Rawhide Kid before he returned to his time. Overall, this backup is good.
For the seventh and final backup, I like that, back in 1962, we get to see the cop tried to stop the robber before he called out Peter (who is Spider-Man) for letting him, told Peter (as himself) that his Uncle Ben was killed by the robber, and learned that Tarantula was caught by Spider-Man years before he thanked Spider-Man for capturing the robber. Overall, this backup is good.

Ravage/mainline story
Oh goody, Aunt May gets magical dementia. What a twist! Ugh... The focus on May's best memories of Peter were alright, and I did like Ravage's reaction to finding out Peter indirectly killed Ben. Just funny to see him go "huh, I guess my cousin isn't so bad after... he did WHAT." Could've been worse I guess, but such a weird story to have for #1000
Noah Hawley's story
I honestly thought this was pretty good. Sure, I'm also sick of getting stories of Peter still not being able to get over Gwen, but I kind of liked the idea of an aging Peter revisiting it. Peter's son being named "Miles" is a bit on-the-nose, but I do love the concept of his grandson taking on the mantle. I would have liked to have seen it be Mayday here instead of this new son, but minor quibbles.
Requiem for a Goblin
Pretty good! I've never been much of a fan of Ramos' art, but it's alright here, even if it is weird to see Peter with Andrew Garfield's hair.
The Peach Momoko/Frank Miller one
I feel like I'm in the minority, but I really don't like Momoko's art. I also haven't been a fan of Miller's writing in years. Despite that, I thought it was alright for what it was. Again, it feels weird to have a story like this in #1000, but whatever.
The Triple H one
This was barely a story, let alone worthy of being in #1000. It's literally just Uncle Ben giving sage advice for the upteenth time to a young Peter, but this time with WWE!
Bendis
Say what you will about Bendis, but the man can write Spidey quips like no one else. Nice to see some of the Z-list villains make an appearance, and nicer to see another hero actually give Peter some recognition.
Spidey Goes West
Kind of a weird cross between Alice and Wonderland and Back to the Future 3, but in a good way. Not much to say about other than it was fine.
Slott's story
I hate to admit it, but this was my favorite of the bunch. Slott has annoyed me so much in the past, from his endless trolling online to his drawn-out tenure on Amazing, but dammit if he can't nail that silver age feel. Really cool to see the origin story from a different perspective. This and Hawley's story were the only two that felt like they were actually written for a milestone issue.
1
u/sdtsanev 14d ago
I thought the main story was kinda heavy-handed in its execution, and the reveal was too telegraphed in advance. BUT it was still cool and the flashbacks really felt like a good tribute to the series. Personally, I LOVED the nursing home story. The others were varying degrees of fun/satisfying too. The current run isn't going to end up on anyone's list of favorite Spider-Man runs, but to me this issue was a good tribute.

Good issue however the resolution feels rushed given the dragon is the manifestation of societal afflictions plaguing the Hidden City. I just feel like such a creature shouldn't be done by everyone joining hands for a few brief moments when we see the rot is still there.

I like that Perry and Jimmy learned about Bizzaro’s world, with Jimmy learning that Bizarro let a family die before he told him how much Superman means to everyone and Perry being told by Bizarro Lois that Bizarro’s world is his play thing. I also like that Perry and Jimmy, after telling each other what happened, decided to fix this before Bizarro was affected by Kryptonite thanks to Bizarro Lois and became the way he is. Let’s hope that Perry and Jimmy will deal with Bizarro in the next issue. Overall, this comic is excellent.
