If your coffee is acrid it’s either poor quality or wasn’t brewed correctly

Coffee is always going to be a little bitter but it can be delicious

Edit: Guys I am not saying you’re not allowed to dislike coffee, I’m just saying it’s not supposed to be super bitter. Waffles, pancakes, etc.

I've never acquired the taste for coffee because the smell is horrible and makes me mildly nauseous. So I don't really know what it tastes like, I couldn't bring myself to take a sip of something that smells like that.

I do know that I hate coffee flavoured things like coffee ice cream and tiramisu.

If you like coffee, enjoy your bean juice, I just don't get it.

I get my caffeine from Diet Coke, but I'm starting to think that's a problem and humans aren't meant to drink 2 or 3 cans of it a day, so I'm switching to pro plus for a while.

To each their own, I for one like the smell but not the taste (unless I put milk and a load of dugar into it so it stops being bitter)

Same, I find it interesting when people say they hate the smell but like the taste. I do like mochas sometimes, if they're more hot chocolate than coffee!

Same, I always get Mochas in Orlen (Gas station chain in Poland), plop in a bit of sugar & some more powdered chocolate and I basically got a drink from heavens

I like the smell of ground coffee but can't stand the taste even if it's drowned in the sweetest creamers and other ingredients known to mankind :( any smidgeon of coffee taste is anathema. Tea is miserable for me too so I have a terrible time getting caffeine healthily...

But I know it's not the bitterness because I love 95+% dark chocolate. Make it make sense

I recall hearing that when you first try bitter things your brain goes “bitter! Poison! Bad!” and it takes a while of eating that food consistently to stop having that immediate reaction. Explains why most kids don’t like bitter things, and people “acquire” tastes for things like coffee or dark chocolate or alcohol as they get older. Of course, people have preferences and could just not like the taste of coffee lol

This is my issue with it. The smell's great, but I'm not wild about the taste, and I've tried multiple coffees. I'll take a good mocha, and there's a few other 'coffee based' options I need to get around to trying to see if I like them, but straight up coffee? Nah, not unless you drown it in milk and sugar like you said, which IMO defeats the purpose... lots of other caffeine options out there.

I find I'm enjoying tea-based options more. I really like a good Chai (just had one yesterday from a local coffeeshop), I want to try matcha at some point, and stuff like London Fog. I've also enjoyed herbal teas in the past, but don't tend to be super wild about bergamot (black) teas by themselves. Maybe it's because my experiences with bergamot tea have mostly been on the cheaper side (iced tea, lower-grade offerings at grocery stores, etc).

My ex wife absolutely loves the smell of fresh brewed coffee but hates the taste, it's funny how that works sometimes. I love the smell of caramelized onions, love the flavor it gives to food, cook with onions all the time, but something about the onion itself is off-putting. I don't like onions raw or cooked, I just enjoy the flavor it imparts. Weird, I know.

Ah.... I'm a bit opposite

I never cared for coffee, and didn't drink it until mid 20s

Caffeine doesn't effect me in small doses, so no point

But I got pissed that every free drink was either water, or coffee, or bad juice.

So I adapted

I had not tasted the dark brew until I was already a man!!!

But seriously, only started drinking it for free drinks.

If my experience with coffee ice cream is anything to go by, adding coffee to milk and sugar just sounds like a way to ruin milk and sugar. I'd rather just have like, hot milk and honey.

Huh, this is an interesting angle. I've always thought that coffee smelling great but tasting bad was a universal opinion. Not judging your tastes but I think that's interesting.

I like coffee flavored things and I'll drink heavily sugared and cream coffee occasionally but I don't like it on its own. I personally don't feel coffee helps me stay awake, and there are way better drinks out there anyways. (Like Sanpelegrino)

I personally love the taste of coffee! I used to hate it, but took a course on coffee brewing at a college on a whim and it gave me an appreciation for it. I had so much black coffee in those months that I developed a tolerance, then a taste for it. I’ve heard a lot of more bitter foods are like that, like black licorice or really anything known as an acquired taste. You have to have a lot of it before your body stops going “bitter! Bad! Poison!” and appreciating the other flavors present

> because the smell is horrible

What the fuck hahahah I salivate just from the ethereal concept of coffee. Hmmm coffee

Seriously, strap a feed bag of coffee beans to my face and I’m in heaven.

I like the smell of coffee and don't mind the taste, but the reason I never acquired the taste for coffee is i'm super dooper sensitive to caffeine (and other stimulants too) and so the last time I drank a cafe coffee (because work was shouting) I got a migraine and had to go home from work.

I can drink tea, but I generally make it pretty weak, and can still mess myself up with it. Benefit is being able to still be going strong at a rave at 4.00am just with chocolate coated coffee beans lol. Downside is the other night I messed myself up badly by drinking a lovely flowery herbal tea that had ginseng in it at 7.00pm - i didn't think ginseng would fuck me up but it did and I got to sleep about 3.00am.

Apparently the stimulant sensitivity is genetic, as my mum has gone thru stages where she couldn't even eat chocolate, and my grandma once fully passed out after having a headache tablet that had caffeine included (she took 'have a bex and a lie down' literally lol)

i like the smell of coffee (but hate the taste if it's black) but this is exactly how i feel about alcohol so i get it

Same! Only caffeine I can drink are the Yerba Madre caffeinated teas, since they’re the only ones that don’t make my heart feel funny.

I hate the smell and taste but I'm constantly tired so I need to get caffeine into my body if I want to function. Found out that adding cinnamon makes it smell and taste less horrible.

my workplace seems to eternally have a new pot of extremely cheap pre-ground coffee brewing, like a store brand that comes in the folgers-style plastic canisters, and it genuinely smells like dirty ass. i couldn't even imagine thinking that coffee is a bad smell before experiencing that, but now i respect coffee smell dislikers.

u/ProfDangus3000 4d ago

If I only had access to that style of coffee, I'd think all coffee was awful too.

Office pot coffee is usually terrible, just as bad as pod coffee. It's always over roasted to maintain shelf stability, but somehow still stale, and full of flavorings, stuff like Stevia, that just ruins the taste. No, I don't think metallic artificial caramel would help dirt coffee.

Whole bean coffee is only good for like a week before it starts to go stale, and pre-ground is already so dry the coffee oils have all evaporated. That's the stuff that makes it taste good.

It's like saying you don't like cheese when all you've had is expired Velveeta.

Some people just truly hate coffee no matter what, but I genuinely believe some people have never had a good cup before.

I love coffee. I love coffee flavored things. I won't drink pod coffee or pre-ground. It's gross.

I love the smell of coffee, am one of the around 40-50% of the world population that get no effect from caffeine, hate the taste, but love it in (some) chocolate and Tiramisu.

I feel like someone messed up with my DNA.

Edit: Oh, and since caffeine has no effect on me, coke is just a weirdly popular yucky soda for me.

8

u/lurkinarick 4d ago

Wdym around 40-50% of the world population gets no effect from caffeine?

4

u/qomanop 4d ago

Yeah that's surely nonsense

2

u/heurekas 4d ago

Sorry I was a bit fast and loose with the word "no effect", but to be clear, somewhere around 40-50% of the world have a variation of the CYP1A2 gene that makes your body break down caffeine really fast.

So while it does affect you (it can help with migraines or give you them) the "boost" that you get from coffee is almost negligible.

Some might get a boost for 2 minutes while others feel nothing.

This is why we all know someone who can drink a cup or a coke before bed and not be bothered by it, while others have heart palpitations for hours.

So while it was a bit dumb of me to write it like that, the effect is so small with this gene variation that it can seem like you are "immune" to coffee.

I've always liked the smell when my partner makes it, but have never been able to drink more than a sip without needing something to wash my mouth out with as the taste is so foul. Just stick to tea.

u/imbogey 4d ago

I also hate the taste but I lived near a big roastery so I got used to the smell. Now when I go back to that area the nostalgia hits me so much more with the smell as well.

Humans also weren’t meant to wear clothes or live in houses, or go to the doctor or dentist, receive vaccines, or basically everything we do on a daily basis.

As a previous Diet Coke addict who dislikes coffee, I forced myself off caffeine entirely a few years ago instead of switching to a different source. It took a week of solid headaches to get it out of my system, but once I was clean I've felt a lot better in general. The dependency on caffeine in the morning to feel awake is gone and those headaches you get when you skip caffeine in the morning vanish. No more total crashing out in the afternoon either.

And now if I really DO desperately need a stimulant boost, I can have a one-off shot of caffeine and it actually feels effective rather than just something that's habit.
