Federal employees get 4 hours every two weeks with no cap. My boss has over 700 hours since he’s worked for the feds for just over 10 years and pretty much never uses sick leave
lol not only that, you often get fired, unless protected by the family medical leave act. But that only goes up to 12 weeks I think and then even that protection goes away.
will say it can work differently depending on where you are. Canada has the exact same system with different sick time vs vacation time. Thing is if you go off for more than like 5 days in a row here you move to a completely separate system called short term disability that doesn't use sick time. Where I work I get 100% pay during this time for up to like 8 weeks then it switches to another system called long term disability that pays like 70% for 2 years. There are definitely some horror stories from the states with how their sick time works but the system of having a limited amount of sick time isn't as crazy as it sounds depending
Depends. At some companies there is no sick leave, you just don't get paid. For others, any time you are under 40 hours a week, it comes from your PTO until PTO is exhausted, whether it's a planned leave or a call out, and after that you don't get paid.
Work for county government. Sick leave accrues at constant rate and never expires. Worked there 8.5 years. Had to use it all 2 years in for a broken leg on short term disability. Im back up to 550 hours or something.
Two candidates for governor in my state just publicly stated that they would look to overturn our new sick leave bill passed by voters. I don't think that alone will disqualify them somehow. Dark times dude
I work in local government. There was an old guy in the mail room who retired 2 years back. He had worked there since 1979. He was special needs and was hired on some long gone jobs program. Only job he's ever had in his life. He was also the only person in the entire organization that had his job title because everyone else in the program had quit, been fired, or died. Since the job was part of a state jobs program originally, the state paid 50% of his salary and due to this his whole job class was really weird and he had different accrual rates and the job class was allowed to accrue an unlimited number of hours of sick and vacation time. I think it was because the state figured that all of the people in the program would have more medical appointments than most or need to take time off.
Apparently he basically never took a day off even when he actually was sick because he didn't really have anything else to do and he had no family left alive.
Apparently when he retired he had to be paid out something like 3 years worth of wages. Fucking legend.
I get 120hrs a year with no limit on accumulation. I can even retire a year early if I save up 2k hours. Gotta love government work (and the no raises, low top out pay, "other duties as assigned", and limits in licensure usage in my case)
It's possible, but the company has to have a roll-over policy that lets you keep the hours. A lot of companies have a 'use or lose it' policy, that if you don't use it by the end of the 'year' it's gone.
I'm American in a union job and I accrued enough sick time to be out for 7 months. Used when I got a pretty bad injury. Also get 6 weeks of PTO a year that is separate.
My mom did. She never called out sick, she would just work from home.
She had a cardiac arrest right before her retirement though. It got her a paycheck through to her retirement date, and her company did end up paying out the rest to her as well
I had over 500 hours of sick leave at a job I just lost.
It was rolled over into "just in case I work for the state again" bank, which means nothing because after getting fired who the hell is going to hire me again for government work.
This does happen as my workplace does exactly this, granted it maxes out at 300 hrs but it's the same thing. A lot of people start "getting sick" on Mondays and Fridays when the holidays start coming up to use it up. It accrues from something like 40 hrs per year once you're full time but when we quit or whatever we lose it all. We're not corporate but a privately owned 300-400 people sales and service group in the East Coast.

I think this comic might be too American for me to understand
