I learned to not spend too long talking online before meeting because of this exact problem - the meeting always became an anticlimax because I built up the fantasy version of them too much.

My now-wife and I exchanged a small handful of messages before our first date, just enough to be confident the date wasn't going to be a complete waste of time.
