The wood/sap smells the same. We had one growing up, and I remember having to pick up the fallen nuts every time my parents needed to mow. Then, as an adult, I was weeding the landscaping in front of my first house, and I started pulling a tiny sapling. Realized the roots went way deeper than I realized. Then smelled my hands and got hit with the memory of all those damn green walnut shells. I couldn't get that sucker out of the ground fast enough; it was right by the foundation and would have had the potential to wreck shop if I'd left it.

LOL yes- this is literally how I identify the saplings when they're small enough to be mistaken for Tree of Heaven.
