Megathread What It's Like to Live in Crown Heights - Masterthread

Hi r/crownheights!

Since posts asking if certain blocks or areas in Crown Heights are good/bad/cool/safe aren't allowed as per Rule 7, due the frequency and annoyance of our members, we've experimented with how to have that information readily available for those who still want to know. Megathreads haven't driven much engagement, so this is a masterthread with every post in r/crownheights history to help organize and make block info more searchable. Feel free to add to it or ask questions here, but the longer this stays up the less likely it is to be answered. A link to this will be added in the sidebar under this rule.

Congrats Andre ❤️

EDIT: Andre is the owner of the former juice bar, Jenny on the Greens, which was located at 726 Franklin Ave.
In the summer of 2025, Steve sold the building without informing us, and we were given six months to vacate. Andre closed up shop and later told me he was looking to open a coffee shop.
Fast-forward a year, and Andre has secured a lease on a spacious new location on Union Street! I’m choosing not to share the exact address because he’s not ready to open just yet. I simply wanted to congratulate him on his resilience and entrepreneurial spirit. Rebuilding a small business after being forced to close is no easy feat, and I’m genuinely proud of him.
And lastly, I didn’t mean to upset anyone by abbreviating Eastern Parkway as “EP.”

$50 balayage at the Pink Salon!

It's me again, your friendly neighborhood stylist :)

Blondes in the neighborhood may already know that The Pink Salon does some of the best blonde around. I'm lucky to be training under these talented folks, and am looking for models to round out my balayage training!

I've done a good handful of models already, all with great results. Right now is more about timing and placement perfection.

I AM LOOKING FOR:

-Hair shoulder length or below

-VIRGIN hair -or- looking for a root touch up for previously professionally done blonde

$50 is the cost of materials, the rest is complimentary as a thank you for your contributions to the beauty of Crown Heights :) Scheduling is flexible!

You can reach me through DM here, DM on instagram (@hairbyphnx), or email hair@phnxcasino.com with any interest or questions. Pls include a photo of your current hair!

ETA: you can also ask any questions in the comments in case anyone else may be wondering

West Elm Whitman Sofa - 86'' - $300

The Whitman Sofa offers a clean, contemporary design for any living space. It measures 86 inches in length. Original price is $1,299 pre tax.
This couch has been lightly used for 2.5 years, in a non-smoking home. It is so beautiful, sad to say goodbye but I am moving into a smaller space and it doesn't fit.

Nephew's cat, likes to hide out in the house for days at a time. This time he's been gone too long and not in the house. No idea how he could have gotten out. He's been missing about a week.
Kingston/Park/Sterling block.
he's a Russian Blue. His tag may have his old LA address.

He's super cool, about 5 or 6 years old.

Party for the 'toot scoot' this weekend! How the Franklin Avenue shuttle survives thanks to its fans

The Franklin Avenue shuttle train is just two train cars and four stops, but it swings way out of its league in terms of history, impact and fanbase. Fans of the train are celebrating the 27th anniversary of its reopening this weekend, so the link above is a tour through the train's wild history and a look at the many times its legions of fans who worked across racial and class divides to save it over the years. It's older than the subway system itself and once connected directly to a seaside resort owned by the railroad; it could one day even extend to the G train.

Do you have a car?

I’m interested to hear from residents who have a car. Is parking a hassle? Are the extra costs a hassle (monthly payment, insurance etc)? Do you drive often? Daily? A couple of times a week? Did you get the car while living here, or did you move here from somewhere else with it?

Seeking advice: barking dog

Hi neighbors,

I just moved from within the neighborhood to a great new apt with very kind owners. It’s a brownstone owned by a family who’s been here for decades, they live in the first two floors and I’m upstairs. They’re great and I’m so thankful to be here.

The only issue is, they have a small poodle mix who they leave home alone all day, often starting early morning. This dog barks literally all day long. She wakes me up in the morning and I have to listen to her yap throughout the day while I work from home. It’s starting to drive me insane. I feel so bad because they clearly don’t have time to train her and she was inherited from their daughter, who passed a few years ago due to cancer. So awful. I’m sure they keep this dog in her memory. But goddamn. What can I possibly do? I’ve tried bringing it up in conversation and they readily acknowledged that they can’t get her to stop barking, so what else is there left to say? It’s also sad for the dog, of course. She must have separation anxiety and gets nervous or bored when left alone.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Who’s hiring?

Thumbnail
5 Upvotes

I’m literally about to go hand out my resume to local businesses, boomer style.

I need a job, any job, and I’m trying to stay local.

I recently acquired a MS in Public Relations and a BA in Political Science. I have some office experience in marketing and “constituent services” with a congress member.

I unfortunately lack customer experience except serving froyo in high school.

I’m able bodied and I’ll do virtually any kind of labor.

**If you’ve noticed any “we’re hiring” signs recently, please let me know.**

(If you somehow have a connection to some kind of PR agency, I would be so grateful for a referral. The entry-level job market is killing me…)

Spotted Unleashed Dog - Classon @ St Marks

Just saw a medium sized greyhound looking dog, dark coloring/gray also, possibly brindled, and with a gray harness on with no owner. I think it was a she, and she was running straight west on St Marks. She crossed over Classon and continued on the south side of St Marks. I'm sorry I lost sight of her quickly and she ran. I hope someone's looking and this helps.

Thursday 10/15 at Salon on Kingston: A night of classical music improvisation on violin, bass and piano

Hi neighbors! Julie here - I help program and book bands for the beloved Salon on Kingston on Kingston and Dean (looks like an old laundromat).

Tomorrow night (Thursday, October 15th) we have a night of musical experimentation. Three incredible artists - Mireia Clua (on violin), Ben Bourque (on bass) and Richard Lowenburg (on piano) will spin a fully improvised musical set, in conversation with one another. It'll be a night of musical magic, existing for one night only in improvised imagination.

At 7:30 pm, Bangladeshi food pop up Hanilo will set up (if its nice, outside!) to sell food. At 8:30 pm the music starts. $20 suggested donation. Would love to see you all there!

For a taste of the musical vibe, watch this video!

There’s been a helicopter flying near eastern parkway and Troy for quite a while now. Anyone know what’s going on?
