The 2022 D2R Chat Gem Cipher May Identify Radament as the Narrator — The Manual-Coordinate Evidence

I recently discovered the old Diablo II: Resurrected Chat Gem cipher, and after reading the existing interpretations I kept running into the same problem.

Almost everyone seems to approach the message with perfect knowledge of the Diablo timeline.

They identify events. They identify games. They identify future characters.

But the cipher itself does not begin as a timeline.

It begins as a monologue.

“The stones have spoken to me again, showing visions that only I can so easily see.”

That sounds like a person.

And I think the source coordinates tell us who.

The cipher was constructed by using Page / Line / Word references to the Diablo II manual. Normally we only care about the recovered word.

I started asking a different question:

Why that occurrence of the word?

The opening immediately becomes strange.

THE — 37/01/01

Its source discusses multiplayer difficulty increasing as people join the game, with players cooperating to complete quests.

For an Easter egg that required a community to collect hundreds of orange-number coordinates, that is almost meta-instructional.

STONES — 68/01/02

“valuable stones by ignorant thieves, rendering their true power silent until new gems are found…”

Already we have stones, gems, thieves, ignorance and hidden power.

HAVE — 03/02/02

From The Adept:

“I have walked the paths; the shadowed roads…”

The poem describes someone pursuing secrets, power and higher wisdom, only to become broken, damned and drained by it.

SPOKEN — 41/12/15

From “soft-spoken monk,” inside the Paladin history describing condemnation, corruption and people refusing to listen.

TO — 57/02/12

Skeleton Mastery:

“As the Necromancer’s knowledge of the undead improves, he is able to harness and divert more powerful spirits to inhabit the corpses of the recently dead…”

ME — 74/03/06

From “Long Road’s End”:

“With the perils that await me at this tragic journey’s end?”

The poem ends immediately before the Horadric account of the Hunt for the Three.

AGAIN — 14/18/08

“When you find your corpse again…”

Death. Corpse. Return.

So the first sentence is:

“The stones have spoken to me again.”

And its underlying contexts move through:

community puzzle → stones/gems → dangerous knowledge → rejected warning → undead spirit in a corpse → Horadrim/Hunt for the Three → corpse returning.

Seven words. Seven useful functions.

Then: “Showing visions that only I can so easily see.”

VISIONS comes from “The Visions of Akarat,” describing undead armies, a sacred vessel of Light, self-sacrifice and preventing evil from possessing that vessel.

“I” returns to The Adept:

“Though I found it, it would leave me — broken, damned and drained.”

SEE closes on a multiplayer reference again.

At this point I stopped thinking the source contexts were random.

Then the cipher says:

“How can the others be so ignorant to their [026]? Cast me aside will they.”

026 is the only word that was never recovered.

“Fate” has been assumed, with “Faith” being a suggested alternative.

Neither was actually found. I think the word may be:

BROTHER.

“How can the others be so ignorant to their Brother?”

The reason is not just grammar.

Plural “Brothers’” occurs three times in the cipher. Every time it uses 83/22/01:

“Brothers’ sway may be stronger than previously understood.”

That passage refers to the Three Prime Evils.

Singular “Brother” occurs five confirmed times.

Every one uses 93/37/04.

Why?

Because the singular word Brother appears only once in the entire manual!

“Brother John Keck.”

So if 026 is Brother, there is effectively one coordinate available, and the cipher has already established that coordinate as its singular-Brother source.

Now ask:

Who is “their Brother”?

If “the others” are the Horadrim, the obvious answer is Tal Rasha.

And if the speaker is another ancient Horadric mage, dead and returned, talking about Tal Rasha…

Radament suddenly fits disturbingly well.

Radament was an ancient Horadric mage. The Horadrim mummified important mages and magically preserved them to guard tombs after death.

Something later changed in Radament.

He is no longer simply lying in his tomb performing a singular guardian function. He is active, displaced, collecting body parts and behaving with apparent purpose.

What if his mind woke up?

I do not know what awakened him. It could have been Diablo passing through. It could involve extreme necromantic power. I am not trying to solve that part.

But the cipher itself then says:

“The crystals of the earth have predicted before. I know these visions tell us secrets.”

PREDICTED comes from the Amazon oracles predicting the Dark Exile.

VISIONS again points toward mortal prophecy involving the Three.

BEFORE comes from the Priests of Rathma section—the people who understand the boundary between life and death and possess the knowledge to reanimate and control the dead.

Then the actual prophecy begins.

At first it is history, the cosmic division, the Soulstones.

Diablo I, the Dark Wanderer.

Then:

“It drives East. East. To be released by the other two dark stones.”

This is where I think Radament’s vision reaches his own present.

“It drives East” is something happening. But then he says "East." again before “To be released”. That goes from something happening, to something that has not happened yet.

And the repeated “East. East.” sounds fractured, almost as if the visions begin again and he starts to narrate them.

From there the syntax becomes increasingly compressed:

“Two dark stones of soul shattered.”

“One fled, to be joined to the Eye.”

“The Eye corrupted beyond repair.”

“To be destroyed…”

“Reduced to shards.”

Then later:

“An Ancient Black Gem is discovered.”

“A prison crafted larger than its kin.”

“Its thirst begins.”

“The Six Gem shown freely.”

“Its fate to join its Brothers and Sisters.”

“The Seven stands at the base of the Eye’s End.”

“Its armies defeated.”

“Follows at last.”

He stops explaining.

He reports states, transformations and results. Then even names disappear and everything becomes symbolic shorthand:

the Eye.

the Dark Gem.

the Five Light.

the Seven.

Then eventually:

“The Perfect return at last to finally claim their rightful throne.

Among Brothers’ Vision of Greatness…”

And the delivery seems to stop.

The next lines feel different, personal.

“A lost flawed gem returned at last?

A fallen Light returned to its former glory?”

I think the first question may be Radament looking at himself.

LOST comes from a Holy Bolt story involving walking dead, living vessels and evil controlling corpses.

FLAWED comes from the gem-quality hierarchy.

RETURNED comes from the Diablo I aftermath:

“the demonic servants of Hell returned to Tristram.”

LAST comes from the Amazon prophecy about the Three and the hope that mortals would at long last stop being playthings of the outer realms.

So:

“A lost flawed gem returned at last?”

Could mean:

Have I finally returned?

Am I finally myself again?

Then:

“A fallen Light returned to its former glory?”

That sounds directed at Tal Rasha.

FALLEN comes from creatures changed by Chaos’ influence.

FORMER comes from the Necromancer’s Attract curse, forcing enemies to battle their former allies.

And GLORY?

The source literally begins:

“At what price glory?”

It describes a holy warrior sacrificing his own blood and physical essence before the Light. That is almost tailor-made for somebody bitterly questioning the heroic story of Tal Rasha.

Then:

“A thief left alone to plan slumber.”

I use “Slumber” rather than “Eternal” here because both coordinates were reported for that position.

The manual line is: “the undead — those who resist the eternal slumber.”

“Eternal” is word 7.

“Slumber.” is word 8.

“Slumber.” carries the period. Virtually the same underlaying meaning but it gives:

“A thief left alone to plan slumber.”

But the critical word is PLAN.

76/20/05.

Its source is Tal Rasha:

“Knowing that the Soulstone’s broken shards would not be enough to contain Baal’s powerful essence, Tal Rasha quickly devised a reckless plan to contain the demon forever.”

The cipher has just called somebody a thief.

Then its word PLAN points directly at Tal Rasha’s emergency decision to become Baal’s vessel.

And then:

“The Seven, and the Five, gripped from their homes, cursed to reside in a kingdom LONG hidden.”

The Seven Dark and Five Light were established near the beginning of the visions. And Sanctuary was the hidden realm.

Coupled with the teased Diablo V stuff.. This is unreal!!

Radament has just watched centuries of consequences.

From his perspective he could be thining:

You thought you were imprisoning one Brother.

I saw where it ends.

All of them come here.

The hidden kingdom falls.

That isn't in the text, but thematically it like the diablo v teaser!!

And then the cipher ends.

“A lost Brother.

A fallen Guide.

Places traded.

Forever cursed.”

Tal Rasha is the lost Brother.

Radament is the fallen Guide.

“Forever” comes from the same Tal Rasha sentence as PLAN:

“plan to contain the demon forever.”

“Traded” has an important problem.

The recovered coordinate is listed as 04/12/03, but there is no page 4 in the manual data.

03/12/03 does exist and it says:

“Never should’ve traded power for my own immortal soul.”

That is The Adept again. So I do not consider “Traded” as securely recovered as most of the cipher. But suppose it is correct.

Places traded.

That phrase has been bothering me more than anything else.

Tal Rasha did not go into the Baal fight intending to become Baal’s vessel.

The Soulstone shattered, then Tal Rasha “quickly devised a reckless plan.”

These men were Horadrim.

They hunted the Three.

They had time before that moment to plan what would happen if they successfully captured Baal.

The cipher ends:

“A lost Brother.

A fallen Guide.

Places traded.

Forever cursed.”

I will ask the same question that finally stopped me:

When the soulstone broke…

Did anyone else try to be the vessel other than Tal Rasha?

Do the Diablo Books Cover the Entire Lore?

Hi folks

I have recently gotten into Diablo lore, and I'd have to say, it's super interesting.

To start, I watched a YouTube video (around 40 minutes long) that explained the story up to Diablo 4. After that, I found out there are novels for the Diablo universe. Based on recommendations I found online, I started with the Sin War trilogy since many said it's the best place to begin if you want to understand the lore chronologically.

One thing that has been frustrating is that I can't seem to find paperback Sin War 3.

My question is: if I read all the novels, will that give me a complete understanding of the lore, or do I also need to watch the gameplays to get the full picture? How closely are the books and games connected? Do the books mainly expand on the world and characters, or are there important story events that only happen in the games?

Thanks~

Theory as to why there aren't more Nephalem in diablo 4 Spoiler

This might be corny as hell but fuck it

I think the reason there aren't more is because of the fear and despair that has grabbed humanity since Malthael's rampage.

In D3 the MC, to me at least, seems to get cockier and more confident as the game goes on, going from mostly silent to actively taunting the enemies. Uldyssian seems to have the same thing going on to me. The more confident and sure in his power he is, the stronger he gets. The knights fighting in hell echo this to me as well. They are doing amazingly when Inarius comes, more than matching hell's might. They have hope and when he falls, when that hope shatters, they fall

Question about the upcoming Diablo comics Spoiler

So Titan comics is putting out a Diablo comic series (got the preview on free comic book day) and I was surprised to see that it picks up after Vessel of Hatred and that ending. What I'm curious about is has there been any word about the canon-ness of the comic's story, or is it going to be like the novels and such?

Why isn't Sanctuary falling apart? (Sin War Lore)

If Uldyssian at his power level was enough to have trag'oul intervene or consider intervening, and Sanctuary literally started falling apart with how powerful he became. How is it that 1. The guardians of balance allowed Diablo to consume the other primes, and THEN allowed nephalem to become stronger than even that?

And 2. How is it that Sanctuary isn't falling apart given that generously the D3 nephalem are on par with Uldyssian.

Bonus point 3. Why did Lilith and Inarius change personalities entirely? I can understand Inarius a bit, but Lilith is an entirely different character.

I know the answer is likely just that the writers don't give a shit about the sin war trilogy but it just sucks having binged the trilogy right before d4 release.

I also have the Diablo 4 collectors edition art book that is inside the original box, and I am currently waiting for the release of the art of Diablo volume 2. Let me know if there is anything missing, I want to make sure I have them all!

is the wonderer as strong as a nephalim?

i’ve read up on the lore recently and i’m not sure if i’m missing something; but lilith was stronger than the nephalim, no? or did she lose power somehow? If the wonderer was able to defeat lilith, which the nephalim couldn’t do, does that not make the wonderer stronger than the nephalim?

The Fate of Killed Archangels

It’s been a while since I’ve done a deep dive into the intricacies of the Diablo lore, so if I misremember anything, forgive me.

My question is if we really know the fate of members of the Angiris Council when they are killed. To my recollection, Tyrael was killed at the end of Diablo II when he destroyed the Worldstone. This would explain why he had the argument with Imperius in Diablo III that led to his defection 20 years after the fact. My understanding was that when an angel dies, whatever the proper verbiage is, their essence is absorbed back into the Crystal Arch, and at some point it will spawn a new angel. Is it a different angel? If so, are Archangels the exception given what apparently happened to Tyrael?

Another reason I ask about Archangels is because the Great Conflict has been going on for eons. Are we to believe none of the Angiris Council was killed in all that time? I guess you could say the Council as we know it is just the current embodiments of their respective aspects, but new Archangels rose to that place after an old one was killed. But there’s no hint of this I’m aware of in the Diablo lore. So I’m forced to conclude, based on the evidence of which I’m currently aware, that an Archangel will respawn back as themselves.

Is there anything we know that contradicts this?

Secondly, can I assume we don’t know what would happen in the case of Inarius, Tyrael, and Malthael? I assume so, because Inarius isn’t an Archangel, Tyrael gave up his angelic essence and took on humanity, and Malthael was corrupted. All 3 died (I assume Tyrael’s dead, but even if not, he will die eventually as a mortal) under special circumstances.
