I’ve seen bigger gaps in teeth…

I was thinking Little Alex Horne

7

u/buckeyes495 Jul 03 '26

He told me in confidence that no women could ever hit this gap.

5

u/Appropriate_Ad_3484 Jul 04 '26

Absolutely just read this in Greg’s voice

1

u/Cynical651 Jul 03 '26

I guess its park of his shtick at this point, but how do you not get your teeth fixed when you have fuck you money?

1

u/tenfootspy Jul 03 '26

Michael Thrahan hath enthered the that

48

u/skdeimos Jul 03 '26

what gap

2

u/Digger_Pine Jul 04 '26

It's ridiculous. There's no gap, but everybody birdies it. You know that hole.

20

u/lavernrobinson9000 Jul 03 '26

is this Dreamcatcher?

3

u/Low_Importance_9503 McLunas Jul 03 '26

The hole has a nick name?

11

u/HighburyHero Jul 03 '26

Yeah, there’s a dreamcatcher in one of the trees you have to find

3

u/BensonBubbler PDX Degenerate Jul 04 '26

I feel like you're underselling it. It's a huge dreamcatcher, 2-3 ft wide and it's at least a few dozen feet up in the tree. Also it's been there for many years and it's hard to find because it's a brown thing in a cathedral of brown trees.

10

u/SearchingforSilky Portland, OR RHBH Jul 03 '26

Contrary to the horrible compression of this photo, there’s a lot of stagger and depth in this hole. Getting to a manageable place is very possible, and the hole yields a lot of birdies (currently in a very soft par 4).

It’s a signature hole at one of the top rated courses in the world. Despite this terrible photo quality.

4

u/SearchingforSilky Portland, OR RHBH Jul 04 '26

It’s still there.

15

u/PMPKNpounder Jul 03 '26

I haven't played pier in a while but there is a local route around the tress on the left with an anhyzer flex rhbh. I can't hit that line, but it's there lol

3

u/Low_Importance_9503 McLunas Jul 03 '26

Yeah I do that or like a big turn over kind of thing.
I’m fighting for par regardless

2

u/ditheringtoad Jul 03 '26

I tend to throw a big hyzer here. Always end up way short, but at least I can hit the fairway and give myself a chance at an upshot

1

u/stoned_ocelot Jul 04 '26

Yeah nah I'm just going overhand and letting it hang in behind the trees after going between the first few sets.

1

u/PMPKNpounder Jul 04 '26

I wish my shoulder could still rotate like that. It's a good idea

1

u/stoned_ocelot Jul 04 '26

I'm okay forehand, ass backhand, but found out I have a hell of an overhand. For a while pretty much only threw overhands that had the flight path of a screwball. After a round of it though I definitely feel it so I backed off and keep it in the pocket for holes like this where I'm gonna be better off getting some distance forward then letting it drop before it kicks its way to a different dimension.

1

u/PMPKNpounder Jul 04 '26

I've seen a trend over the years that forehand dominant players generally have a decent tomohawk/ thumber

26

u/yes_maybe_no__ Jul 03 '26

Hello flick roller...

15

u/zakkwaldo Jul 03 '26

yeah nah. as someone who’s played this hole a bunch- that won’t work lol.

6

u/sprtstr14 Jul 03 '26

What does work?

14

u/zakkwaldo Jul 03 '26

nothing tbh lmao. i try and hit a wide hyzer gap on the right because it’s a little less of a clusterfuck on that side brush and tree wise.

also worth noting that hole number 3 and 4 are oncoming to you on the left side just past the trees. so if you go forehand, or, just in general get a bad bounce- you’re OB/potentially hitting people/potentially getting hit by people. similarly, rollers won’t work because there’s hella roots they’ll launch off of.

either super neutral disc straight up the pipe as far as you can, or a wide swinging right hand hyzer are the two best options i’ve found.

1

u/BensonBubbler PDX Degenerate Jul 04 '26

It's hole 9 to the left here. There's also a huge turnover line for big arms. And there's a FH flex line that plays pretty well.

1

u/srosenberg34 Jul 04 '26

this is 15. holes 3 and 4 are nowhere near this.

10

u/thenaturalinquirer Jul 03 '26

Nothing.

5

u/dontspillthatbeer Jul 03 '26

At least the flick roller won’t ricochet 40’ left like any other shot in the air.

-4

u/KingBooRadley Jul 03 '26

Playing a more reasonable course?

2

u/thenaturalinquirer Jul 03 '26

This hole is only partially indicative of the rest of Pier. There are many more holes where the fairway gaps are much larger and playable. If you've never been, come see for yourself here in Portland!

2

u/boondockpirate Amateur Lumberjack Jul 03 '26

Throwing far. Ive played doubles with a couple guys that can get a birdy look. Flat/slight hyzer flip on the right, really hard. I cant do it. At all.

2

u/toolatealreadyfapped Jul 04 '26

Embrace the foot fault and run the disc to the basket

2

u/BensonBubbler PDX Degenerate Jul 04 '26

Straight up the gut, fade out left, hyzer into the green, tap in for birdie (assuming it's still in the new long, which it usually is).

This is a really weird image that seems to be using a fisheye lens to make things look tighter than they really are.

I looked for my own picture but all my images are form checks and dogs.

2

u/sprtstr14 Jul 05 '26

Gotta love the pictures of dogs. Also, Reddit won't let me post screenshots, but it told me your reply to this comment was nsfw, but it hasn't said that about anyone elses lol.

2

u/srosenberg34 Jul 04 '26

middle gap, hyzer out to the left side (plenty of room) about 350 feet down the fairway. there’s a short basket there sometimes. the long basket is actually about 50-75ft short of the basket in this photo. i believe this photo is taken in the ~490ft “par 4” position.

1

u/g4retto Jul 03 '26

Flip up down the middle, hope you miss a tree. Left side is very forgiving. It’s an easy upshot from there

1

u/One_Catch5086 PNW Noodle Arm Jul 04 '26

Flat/ slight anny with a driver that’ll drift slightly right but still fade at the end. Landing in the center/slight left of the fairway is ideal for a hyzer upshot into the green

1

u/StrifeSociety Jul 05 '26

Nothing to aim for just give it a line that can get there and pray. It’s mostly air out there anyways.

2

u/Deliciouszombie Jul 03 '26

now i really want to try a flick roller.

2

u/Alexplz Jul 03 '26

This is the way.

Otherwise it's however many throws with a straight putter you need

6

u/lovefist1 Jul 03 '26

Yikes. I have no clue what I would do here. I know what would happen (me hitting trees over and over), but I don't know what I'd even try to do to minimize the damage

8

u/ButterscotchLow7330 Jul 03 '26

You throw it and hope to get lucky.

1

u/TDiddlez Jul 03 '26

Throw and pray boys, throw and pray...

3

u/MoistStub Tree punisher Jul 03 '26

I would probably just park it right at the beginning of the trees and hope there's a better line wherever it lands.

1

u/zoob32 Jul 03 '26

Theres a gap on either side of the trees, either a big hyzer or anhyzer flex for a RHBH. Its still pretty challenging though. I did manage to birdie it once with a flexed LHFW along the left route, but par is a good score.

40

u/iamdougaf Jul 03 '26

This hole is stupid.

1

u/chadsmo Jul 03 '26

There’s ways to the green , it just requires a really good throw.

4

u/TheLaughterGuns Jul 03 '26

Well that just sounds made up

2

u/BensonBubbler PDX Degenerate Jul 04 '26

It doesn't really. I play the doubles league here regularly and in the par 4 configuration it's a ton of birdies.

https://udisc.com/events/2026-pier-park-doubles-doubles-night-4YfvLo/leaderboard?round=1&view=course-stats

Check here, last week played almost 0.6 strokes under par.

2

u/chadsmo Jul 04 '26

Having thrown the hole twice ever and parking it once and hitting a tree the other it felt like a really good throw lol.

Getting a 3 wouldn’t be too challenging though no.

1

u/BensonBubbler PDX Degenerate Jul 04 '26

There's a lot of difference between the three configurations. The par 3 short is a tough but achievable birdie. The par 3 long is basically impossible, the best pros can get it sometimes. The par 4 is the easiest of the three, it isn't a freebie but it's frequently birdied.

2

u/chadsmo Jul 04 '26

All I know is that Pier is hands down my favourite course ever and I need to get back to play it. Portland is about a 7hr drive from where I’m at in Canada , I should really just come down for a day sometime.

1

u/BensonBubbler PDX Degenerate Jul 04 '26

You should! It's a great course and there's a handful of other great courses nearby. It's no Charlotte but it's a great disc golf trip.

2

u/chadsmo Jul 04 '26

There’s a skydiving drop zone there too I really want to jump at too. I can crash with Zoe and Dustin if they’re home too which makes it not a terribly expensive trip.

2

u/BensonBubbler PDX Degenerate Jul 04 '26

I've still got to get down and play the Eugene courses, planning to do that soon to check off my 100th course.

3

u/TheOverUnderlord Jul 03 '26

How many times out of 100 could even a top touring pro hit that gap? Genuine question

8

u/twinner6 Jul 03 '26

Shockingly enough I would say 65/70% of the time you make it thru the trees. They are spaced much better than what this pic shows. The hole before this one tho….. those are some guardian trees

4

u/generic_user_27 Jul 03 '26

Theres a video on YouTube of Casey White playing the course.

2

u/EmotionalMushroom759 Jul 03 '26

Look on YouTube - most Pros play pier when they are in town - a bunch even hold clinics there

1

u/figurative_me Should have thrown a Teebird Jul 03 '26

I bet Antilla would have a decent percentage. He throws frozen ropes that somehow stay flat forever, that might work.

1

u/trebbihm Old enough to know better. Dumb enough to try. Jul 03 '26

There's a flex line that's hard to see because it's a flat looking picture. I'd say 80/100 for a pro. There's good chance of advancing most of the way.

4

u/Justmethedubz44 Jul 03 '26

It has been aced. Fact

3

u/capeabenable Jul 03 '26

It’s a par 4 sometimes depending on the basket position

3

u/frere91 Jul 03 '26

I clocked pier park before I even saw the sub. There's plenty of gap! Just gotta learn the bounce

4

u/UtahDarkHorse Jul 03 '26

There might be a forehand flex somewhere there that only Ohn could pull off. I don't see anything a mortal could do. maybe a roller. at least wouldn't go too far left or right after hitting a tree.

1

u/chadsmo Jul 03 '26

Turnover down the left , there’s space.

2

u/jbblog84 Jul 03 '26

I definitely nailed one of those trees this morning.

2

u/Johnny_the_tile_guy Jul 03 '26

I'll hit that gap and every tree along the way, watch.

2

u/instantlyregredditit Jul 03 '26

You spelled tree wrong

2

u/mbsouthpaw1 LHBH 40 Yr Pro Jul 03 '26

2

u/GratefuLdPhisH Jul 04 '26

Usually I fall into the gap

2

u/dayungabruda Jul 05 '26

Played this on Friday for the first time. This course is unbelievable

1

u/scarpicide Jul 03 '26

I ripped my 400S M2 through there flat with a slight turn and it got through clean. 150-foot putter upshot from there to tap out the 3 lol

u/SuspendedAccountant Jul 03 '26

1

u/Rok-SFG Jul 03 '26

We got a hole a lot like this at my local. I always just huck a thumber through it, and more often than not get most of if not all the way through. So that would be my play here, just huck 2 thumbers and hope to get to putting range.

1

u/figurative_me Should have thrown a Teebird Jul 03 '26

Looks like there might be a RHFH line down the left side. Not sure what all is over there but I’d probably forehand something to a more approachable line and play it for par.

1

u/ball-peen Professional (Bad) Disc Golfer Jul 03 '26

What gap?

1

u/SF_Anonymous Custom Jul 03 '26

I can guarantee you give me 100 throws I hit A gap eventually. Not gonna be the right one, not even close, but I wont hit a tree

1

u/sane-asylum Jul 03 '26

I will use my strategy for tight woods gaps. Take my Mako3 and throw it as hard as I can and hope it misses a lot.

1

u/Glittering_Cap_9115 Jul 03 '26

How far is this? Can’t tell from the pic, but I can get DX Roc down the middle and maybe there if it’s 250ish.

1

u/Late_Preparation3915 Jul 03 '26

Left handed tomahawk with a truth because it can never lie.

1

u/ForkFace69 Jul 03 '26

Hypothetically I would just try to make a couple manageable shorter throws and hope to keep it on the trail and make par. But knowing how I am in real life, I would delude myself into believing I could just find a line through the sheer force of will and end up smacking a tree 30 feet out, resulting in a triple bogey.

1

u/PuzzleheadedMonth820 Jul 03 '26

Those poor trees

1

u/lenn_eavy Jul 03 '26

Maybe wide angle lens makes it narrower than it really is but from this photo, it is pure RNG shot for me.

1

u/sometimesifartandpee Jul 03 '26

Man id buzzz right through there

1

u/SixTwoFive Jul 03 '26

This is one of those "Chuck and pray" holes lol

1

u/boylong15 Jul 03 '26

Gorgeous path. Just pick a wraith or something and throw it down the line

1

u/kbeamerm3 Jul 03 '26

Thumber with a Tesla

1

u/dxwg Jul 03 '26

Proxy right down the middle

1

u/Jupsi If it flips it flies Jul 03 '26

I'll probably hit one of the gaps... within the first couple of throws.

(I'd probably try a grenade, just to get that angle of attack through the trees)

1

u/PerfectHandz Jul 03 '26

Oh I’ll be hitting something alright.

1

I’ve only played Pier once. Parked this hole with a RHBH turn over down the left. From the tee its hard to see but you can see the line if you walk the hole backwards.

1

u/shutthefuckupdonny98 Jul 03 '26

What is this gap you speak of?

1

u/Nu_Chlorine_ I need everyone to know, that was a putter Jul 03 '26

Yawn. If I wanted to experience random chance I could just go to the roulette table lol

1

1

It's a par 4 in Summer. A par feels like a birdie here.

1

u/TheLaughterGuns Jul 03 '26

I've never aced before, but i imagine it feels as good as the time i parred dreamcatcher in the long position

1

u/dano2469tesla Jul 03 '26

I’ll throw it sideways

1

u/BigBig5 Jul 03 '26

This looks like the gaps of Carolina woods courses.

No. You can’t make me. And neither can I.

1

u/Xyrexenex PDX Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

Every time someone posts a phone photo of this hole it ragebaits me. There is SO much room between the trees but there's no depth to the phone lenses.

The dreamcatcher hole deserves better, there's the purest line that's 40-50 ft wide up the gut and there's big alleys down the right and left.

That gap is wide, those trees are just FUCKING HUGE and the tunnel is 470 feet long.

2

u/WaxBandits Jul 04 '26

Just thought it was a cool shot of this hole, brother. It was my first time playing at Pier. Hope you’re okay. Cheers! 🍻

1

u/Xyrexenex PDX Jul 04 '26

Oh you're good dude, I shouldn't have said shitty like I was insulting your photo! Its more that phone camera's can't convey the scale, like seeing the toboggan in person for the first time you realize how photos and videos don't do it justice.

2

u/WaxBandits Jul 04 '26

All good.

1

Someone should put mando signs on those 2 trees down the middle about 150 feet.

1

u/TheMahaffers Jul 04 '26

Listen, I’m throwing full send. I’ll hit a tree in this as often as I’ll hit a tree on a mile wide open fairway, so nothing new 😂

I could definitely hit that. And every tree behind it, too

1

u/richardgutts Jul 03 '26

1

Sure you can, it's the little fuzzy thing dead straight 400ft in front 🙂

-2

It's an amazing hole, on an amazing course.

2

u/twinner6 Jul 03 '26

Seconded. This hole and course is great and shockingly enough quite playable……… I mean, yeah, stupid hole stupid course don’t come here……

1

u/zakkwaldo Jul 03 '26

people in this thread really not realizing it’s a 400 some odd foot hole AND there’s trees the entire way 6-8 feet apart at most from each other. roller won’t work. roots everywhere. you pick a tight line, and stick to it, pray to the dream catcher above, and then rightfully take your +3

-2

u/devinbookersuncle Throws kinda far Jul 03 '26

Gotta love bad course design

1

u/SearchingforSilky Portland, OR RHBH Jul 03 '26

This is a signature hole on a course an enormous number of touring pros call one of the best courses in the world.

This is a wildly soft par four in the current iteration, but even in the par three long it’s hard but fair.

This camera lens makes it look stupid and compressed.

To me, you gotta love internet idiots.

-2

u/devinbookersuncle Throws kinda far Jul 03 '26

Is there a clear line?

No,no there is not so unless you provide a better photo this is just bad course design and nothing more.

If you got upset over your local course being insulted by all means, but this hole is bad and thata all there is to it.

2

u/SearchingforSilky Portland, OR RHBH Jul 03 '26

Yes. There is 100% a clear line. I’ve eagled this hole twice in the last 9 attempts.

When it was a par 3, I used to birdie it all the time.

If you saw this hole in real life, you’d be embarrassed for this take.

-2

u/devinbookersuncle Throws kinda far Jul 03 '26

Then show a better photo of it next time you go there because this photo shows a badly designed hole and thats all there is to it.

1

u/EmotionalMushroom759 Jul 03 '26

there are several lines to throw here - trashing course design because can't see them is weak sauce - maybe you might just not be built for woods golf

1

u/devinbookersuncle Throws kinda far Jul 03 '26

I only play woods golf where I live because thats all there is and with the angle of this photo no, there is not a clear line.

Its what we like to call "poke and hope" because all you can do is try to throw through and hope you dont hit a tree.

Its a badly designed hole and its pretty simple but this sub is also full of "what? This course I play all the time doesnt have a single bad hole on it what are you talking about? You CLEARLY suck at disc golf" when in reality is most people aren't confident enough to call out bad design as bad design.

4

u/WaxBandits Jul 03 '26

First time at this course. This is just a quick iPhone photo from the tee box looking at the pin. Safe to say the trees got to know my disc pretty well.

0

u/SearchingforSilky Portland, OR RHBH Jul 04 '26

Yeah, you’re an idiot. I’ve played woods golf in 12 states. I’ve played poker and hope holes. The thing you don’t grasp is that there is no “rough” here. The gap is challenging, but there are hittable lines.

Even when you hit trees. There is ample scramble opportunity from lots of locations.

This hole can be very stressful, or very easy, and sometimes it’s a matter of inches.

There is also a “layup” play another poster mentioned, where you leave one hyzered left to a large alley making the birdie/par (depending on position) more predictable).

It’s a great hole. One of the few where luck is appropriately factored in. (Unlike the woods golf where you’re from, where off the fairway is jail.)

One second on this tee pad and you would change your mind.

0

u/devinbookersuncle Throws kinda far Jul 04 '26

It’s a great hole. One of the few where luck is appropriately factored in. (Unlike the woods golf where you’re from, where off the fairway is jail.)

Luck should never be a factor in a good hole, skill is always what should be the determining factor in that and to think otherwise just shows your lack of skill.

The hole is garbage and aI stand by that and Id know what good course design is considering I live in Charlotte. Its kinda what we're known for in disc golf.

1

u/SearchingforSilky Portland, OR RHBH Jul 04 '26

Yeah bro, I’ve played every course in Charlotte. Theres plenty of holes there with gaps tighter than this.

My whole family is from Mecklenburg county. Half my family still lives there. I lived in Asheville.

This hole is fair as hell, and plenty bigger gaps than holes in NC.

You’re a closed minded idiot who’s clearly never played west coast trees.

-6

u/BasicReputations Jul 03 '26

Some folks just shouldn't be allowed to design and maintain courses.

Old salts probably love it because they get lucky 1 in 3 throws and make forward progress 🙄

3

u/s_m_t_x Jul 03 '26

Some folks just haven't played Pier Park, you wouldn't be saying that if you have.

1

u/BasicReputations Jul 03 '26

Is the picture deceptively narrow?  Can you drive a tractor down the fairway?

1

u/s_m_t_x Jul 03 '26

Kinda, those trees are pretty big. Like 200ft tall big. And yes you could drive a car through there easily. Sorry, tractors come in really small, and really large sizes, cars are a better comparison.

1

u/BasicReputations Jul 03 '26

That's not so bad then - looks like a footpath at first glance.

2

u/s_m_t_x Jul 03 '26

Yeah, the hole is 400ft+ and if you had a person standing halfway down the fairway it would put things into perspective on how big the trees are. It's still a hell of a tough hole though.
