You don't have to believe me because its the internet, but I built that thing! I'm pretty honored that you liked it enough to share with the disc golf sub.

Vashon Island has one of these and that community is respectful enough to where it actually works. I dumped all my old dx for them last time I visited.

Small community where everyone knows everyone, everyone sees everyone, and you aren’t leaving.

I've visited the island on vacation, some old pig farm (that still had pigs), but had no idea there was a course on the island! If I ever go again I'll have to check it out!

Aww darn…this usually works for lil book libraries 🙁

u/Sad_Pattern_220 Aug 21 '26
Those are always just full of 1000 James Patterson and Chicken soup books.
A disc on the other hand, basically has to be broken in half for me not to use it

u/cowboy_shaman Aug 21 '26
My local course has/had a disc library like this. They all get stolen immediately. Now it’s full of crappy books and zero discs

u/BowlingforDrip Aug 21 '26
Makes no sense to me. We pick up garbage fix broken signs or clean up tee pads andbothers are just trash people whontale advantage.

u/oktofeellost Aug 21 '26
I mean, not my experience at all with the little free libraries. I've found a lot of good shit. But the point still stands, it's comparing apples to oranges. The majority of people will get use out of most discs, even crappy people who will abuse the system. Most people wouldn't be stoked to find a free copy of house of leaves in the library down the block.

My friend has one of those out the front of their house. She has to constantly remove all the trash books people exchange and gets good ones from charity shops to keep it alive with decent stuff.

We’ve got one with like six broken dx aviars in it

u/IHaveNeverBeenOk Aug 21 '26
Yea, had one of these where I grew up for a few months. It was started out of the local league players donations. So how it started was basically "decent used section" tier. After, I'd say 2 months, it was 98% beat to shit baseline plastic putters.
What's interesting to me is, I don't think it was one person being a jerk. I'm sure there were a couple straight up assholes, but by and large it seemed like what happened was, a person would grab a disc they wanted to try, play a round with it, find they really liked it, so they would take the disc and leave something of their own in the rack. But people really don't want to take any losses, consciously or subconsciously, so people would always leave a disc that was in a bit worse condition than the one they took. Repeat this process a few times and yea...that's how you get a rack of 98% chew toy tier dx aviars.
This is a classic example of "the tragedy of the commons," rather than it being about people explicitly sucking. Some people do explicitly suck, don't miss my message.

u/Preemfunk Aug 21 '26
Haha yep bingo. I dumped some early 2000’s discs in it that were definitely beat but were solid throwers. Every once in a while a nice destroyer or something will show up but usually its a lost and found disc from the course OB with a name and number so I usually try to grab those and get them back to their owner who lost it.

Had one of these at my local course. It didn't last a single month.

I was at Fritz in north Texas. There’s a short hole (6) with most the flight going over a fairly substantial creek. Two guys were fishing discs out of the creek, directly on the path to the basket, about 15 feet below the ground where the basket was.
I drove, it looked great, then wind smashed it down into the hill about 8 feet above one of the guys and rolled in the creek. They were livid. I walked up and got yelled at for not yelling fore. Told them if they weren’t in the direct line to the basket while everyone drives they wouldn’t be in harm’s way. I didn’t need to yell it right up until the last second as the wind knocked it down very fast, there was no time to say anything.
I apologized, and tried to be cool even though courtesy goes both ways here.
Anywho, I asked if they’d retrieve my disc real quick. Nope. Asked if they’d were calling the numbers on the discs they found. Nope.
These are the kinds of people that will never let a free disc library exist at a course.
I snapped a picture of them and emailed the course director about what they were doing. He said he knew who they were and reached out to them. Since they wouldn’t give him the discs so they could be returned, he banned them from his course, and they’d be trespassed if he saw them there in the future. Don’t know how much good it did.

Guys like this at Mary Moore Searight in Austin, TX. Would typically set up at the path crossing between holes 2/3 and 9/10.
More than once I found my own lost discs with my name and number still on them laid out for sale. They refused to give them back but were ‘nice’ enough to offer them back at a $1 discount. Aggressive as hell too, talking shit to passers by that wouldn’t buy from them and would heckle bad shots; nobody I met liked dealing with them. This was years ago, no clue if they’re still there. Last time I played I there I found a disc, linked up with the guy a few holes later and rewarded me with a little joint for the trouble. Nice to see some karmic balance on the course.

Just take them dude! It's your name and number it's your property! They can claim finders keepers all they want but that's not how the law sees it.
And possession is 9/10ths of the law only applies to drugs lol

u/Fancy_County4242 Aug 21 '26
Please tell us you immediately went back and threw that hole again...

u/pianistafj Aug 21 '26
I decided to head back to my car and chill near the entrance so I could let quite a few groups know what happened. They all said they’d aim straight for them when they got to the hole.

Prolly the same assholes that troll around the creeks in McKinney.
I nearly hit one dude down there and caught him shoving my PD in his duffel bag. Thankfully he was a squirrely little shit and didn’t argue

My home course has hooks on the course map and hang Innova shoulder bags off them with DX driver, mid and putter in them for people to try the sport. In just the few months since they put them out I’ve noticed a lot of new regulars out there that are clearly beginners so it seems to be working.

u/PoppaFish Aug 22 '26
Yeah, I tried this at the new disc golf course back at my small home town. Everything was stolen in less than 3 weeks.

I feel terrible that my first thought was "oh lots of green leaves, that little bit might be poison ivy". It's a great idea. I hope it can actually be a disc library and not a place people only take from.

u/Vivid_Anyth4 Aug 22 '26
We had a crate with the same intention at hole 1 at my local course, someone stole the crate. I dunno if there were any discs in it when they took it but either way rude.

u/Shifting_Baseline Aug 22 '26
It does make me upset that some people ruin this for everyone, but it also makes me sad for them that they are so broke and desperate they feel like they have to steal community sports equipment. That’s a level of poor where people do shameful things because they feel like they don’t have a choice (obviously non-poor a-holes might just grab them for a quick buck even though they’re not desperate).

OP, you are why this isn’t just a sport or hobby; it’s a lifestyle, a community…….
Regardless of outcome/actions of others, maintain your faith and your unconditional generosity!
Keep bangin’ those chains and keep smilin’ my friend! 🤘

u/Davwader Aug 21 '26
people with reasoning like yours are the reason why we can't have nice things.

u/hujambo11 Aug 21 '26
Am I wrong? There's one sign that talks about borrowing, and a separate sign that talks about taking. I could see where people would think they were giving discs away to those who don't have a set.
If you specifically want someone to borrow it and bring it back, you could say that on the sign.

This is one of those things that would bee really cool if there weren't awful people who ruin it for everyone.
