[Safety advice] Restrict your DMs/chat requests

As many of you know, weirdos, incels, porn addicts are everywhere on reddit, and they will of course target women on here too. If this bothers you, please restrict your DMs to ONLY people you add to your "friends" list. It's explained in the Automoderator's comment in each thread.

The best way is to use the "old" reddit on browser:

https://old.reddit.com/prefs/blocked

Show private messages from:

Everyone, except blocked users.

✓ Only trusted users.

"New" reddit and the official reddit app settings are a bit different.

Who can send you chat requests > everyone, only accounts older than 30 days, or no one. Who can send you private messages > everyone or nobody

  • Official reddit app:

Profile icon > Settings (at the bottom) > General: Account settings for [username] > Safety: Chat and messaging permissions

More info here

If you befriend someone on here, add them to your Friends list (on their profile) or reply to them in the sub to add them/make them add you so you can chat/DM.

I am being harassed over DM. What can I do? Nothing happening in private (direct messages, reddit chat) can be dealt with by a subreddit moderator. We could ban the user if they posted in the subreddit, but they can still DM you. Contact the reddit admins if you are on the receiving end of verbal abuse, graphic content or death/rape/doxxing threats. Please note that the content will no longer be visible once reported.

META IMPORTANT! Community news and updates 2 (November 2025)

Ladies,

Thanks to your feedback and vivid discussion on the state of the sub, we have implemented a few changes to our rules and functioning of the sub.

1) The biggest change is that from now on all users who are 20 or under 20 years of age are required to use a flair (“16-18 yo” or “19-20 yo”). They can also no longer make posts of their own to the sub. However, they can still take part in the discussion in the comment sections. The age flairs for the younger users are mandatory and as with the “not FA” flair, if you are assigned this flair and you remove it by yourself, you will be banned.

This change to the rules was made not to belittle the hardships and difficult feelings young people go through, but to acknowledge that it is by no means unusual to never have dated or had a relationship by the age of 20. Declaring yourself “forever alone” that young is not only premature, it can also be psychologically harmful to you to adopt a fatalistic mindset like that when you are not even a full adult yet. While all the FAWs who are now over 20 were once 16 and 18 themselves, many more of those people who were lonely in their teens eventually started dating and having relationships like most of their peers. We want to encourage hope in the younger folks who find their way to our sub. It is more likely than not that your future is not yet set in stone forever.

2) Another big change is that from now on this sub is strictly text-based. That means image posts are no longer allowed. This rule was added because lately the sub has seen an increase in low effort posts with memes and outrage porn-y screen captures from other Reddit subs, TikTok, Instagram and the like. We don’t want that kind of content in here to clog the sub's feed. We have also disabled the option to crosspost stuff from other subs for the very same reason. While many of the memes and images and crossposts you’ve shared with the sub have been positive, funny and uplifting or otherwise fitting to the discussion, too many of them have only invited femcel-kind of discussion or brigading from elsewhere in Reddit.

3) We have also put in place a new rule that bans posts and comments that treat marginalized or discriminated groups of people like some sort of “last resorts” in dating. We felt this kind of rule was needed to specifically make this point, because FAWs come in all shapes, sizes and features and it is not very nice to come to this place and seek empathy and community only to discover some people seem to think of you as a subhuman or undeserving of love just because you are of a certain ethnicity, have disability or otherwise belong to an especially vulnerable group of people.

In short: think before you type and be mindful of all kinds of FAWs visiting the sub and having the right to be here without being made to feel like crap.

~ ~ ~

In addition to these recent changes to rules, we also want to remind you of a few things:

4) If your post or comment gets removed and there is no removal reason given, there might be a couple of reasons for that. The post/comment might have been removed by Automod or Reddit filters or a human mod forgot to give you the reason for the removal. If you send us modmail over removed content, do not delete your removed post/comment yourself. We mods can’t access any of your posts or comments that you yourself have deleted. That is why we then can’t also give you a reason for the removal later on if you decide to ask us for it. Complaining about removed content will also not yield any results if you can't show us which of your posts/comments you think was unfairly removed.

5) It seems like we will have to repeat this ad nauseam until things improve: We are still in need of new mods. If you like the sub and visit this place regularly, we want to really ask you to consider committing a bit of your time to this, because badly-moderated subs may face consequences from Reddit and the present mods are struggling to keep the sub free of problematic content (hence all the new rules and making the sub text-based, too). Also, if you are one of those people worried about the present state of the sub, well, there is a chance for you to roll up your sleeves and help the sub in a very practical and impactful way. It doesn't have to be a time-consuming commitment; new mods roles' are restricted in any case, and you will only be given fairly easy tasks when you start. The frequency of doing modding doesn't also have to be intense, because the more mods we have, the less work there is for each of us.

6) However, we know being a mod is not feasible to all of you, and if you really don't feel like you can commit to it, you can also help keep this sub up and running by staying vigilant and being an active reporter. If you see any content that is against the rules or Reddit TOS, users who claim to be something they are not (men, under 20 without flair, people who don't fit the FAW criteria...), report, report, report. Also, it will help the mod team immensely if, when you report a post/comment/user and the reason for your report is not instantly apparent in the reported content, that you use "custom report" option and give us more details to your report in that way.

7) We get a lot of complaining about your private DMS in our mod mail, so once again it needs to be brought up that whatever problems you have with other users on your chat or private messages is the business of Reddit admins, not subreddit moderatorrs. We can't see you private convos or do anything about users harassing you by chat/DMs. Even banning someone from the sub who harasses multiple of our users wont' be a solution, because they can still lurk and read the sub and contact users directly even though they can no longer make posts or comments on the sub. Here is our relevant safety advice. If you don't want to disable the option for other users to chat/DM with you, the correct way to handle creeps in your inbox is to screenshot the convos and report them directly to the Reddit admins.

~ ~ ~

Lastly, we are continually looking forward to receiving feedback from you. You can send it us privately on mod mail: what works in your opinion, what doesn't, do you have ideas for improvement, etc. Do remember to stay civil and constructive - the rules of the sub and the Reddit-wide etiquette still apply.

That is all for now.

Regards,

FAW Mod team

Venting Lonely woman activities: I made an incomplete hinge profile just to look at the men's profiles.

I found out that if you create an account but don't upload the required number of photos, you can still see the men there, but you obviously can't like them, and no one can see your profile. I'm too scared to actually use it, but I've just been looking at what's out there. Some guys seem sweet and share my interests, and I think, "Oh, wouldn't it be nice?" but then I imagine what this guy would think if he saw my awful face in his likes, and my chest starts to hurt. This may be a form of self-harm at this point; I wouldn't recommend doing this if you're lonely. Curiosity got the better of me.

I think hope is ruining my life

I’m autistic and unnatractive and don’t have an appealing personality, I keep hoping that one day I’ll have a boyfriend who genuinely loves me and a group of great friends to hang out with all the time but I’m 24 and I haven’t even come close. I think I’d be happy if I just accepted that’s not in the cards for me but a part of me still hopes and believes that maybe one day it will come true

Venting I'll never be good enough

I'm not rich enough to get my looks fixed, I live in a place where ppl favour more "Eurocentric" features than other features (including mine). I'm autistic, mentally exausted and ill. My mom still has some hope that I'll find "a good man to date and marry" but honestly, I already feel old at my 23 with no experience (no first kiss, no first date, nothing). Men love to complain that women do not approach them, but when I did, I got made fun off and called "desperate" for doing it so.

Guys always say to me that I'm "too ugly to date" and that I look too "childish" (short and underweight with no curves). Or they just straight up call me a "boy". I tried to be more sociable, to "mask" myself in order to get accepted - I still got rejected and mocked.

I don't understand why I should have hope, I'm a lost cause. The only thing that keeps me going is my imaginary bf, but it sucks being in love with someone that cannot be physical at all. I wish I was never born in first place, I was nerfed since the start.

I always fuck up in dating i don't work well with men

• Upvotes

so i dated a bit after working for like an year and moving out. and i don't know but the dates never turned into anything serious. like i am still a virgin at 25. i was talking to two guys recently, and i work a lot so i didn't respond to their messages for a few hours or i rescheduled a meeting, and then i end up getting deleted. this is so frustrating i want to quit dating altogether. like no matter how hard i try this just doesnt' work. and i mean i did meet many guys in the past year. perhaps dating apps are the wrong place to be. guys mostly want to find something casual and are bad texters or communicators. i just want to return to my den/bedroom and cry then read some romance novels. my work is okay but my dating life is just a disaster. i think i am going to be an old maid at some point. why dating and relationship are so easy for other people? i am getting tired at this point. dating is harder than job seeking lol.

Venting It’s hard for me to accept that I am ugly

I always thought that I was good looking, because my family members are and I kind of liked how I looked. Nobody has said to my face( so far) but indirectly I have been told:

by my sister: you should consider going out with this guy( not so attractive) man because you won’t find anybody better than him. She also asked me what she thinks about people who have never been in relationship because of their looks. She also dropped a hint that I am not attractive. One time I dressed up, and she said, this is the first time you have looked good. She laughed when somebody made fun of my facial feature. One time we went together to a place and the guy said there is so much difference between you two.

My aunt said you aren’t as attractive as you were as a baby. My other aunt, her kids make fun of my disproportionate physical feature. My other aunt praised my sister in front of me saying a lot of people she knows have praised about my sisters good looks. No one in my relatives asks why iI am not married. My mom has said you were pretty as a baby.

One time, my coworker asked this lady if she knew somebody that would be a good match for me, she hesitated, looked at my face and didn’t say anything. Then the lady told the other pretty girl that you can let me know anytime you are ready to date. My boss asked me one time, you have never been in a relationship, have you?

My guy friend once revealed that he can’t be friends with attractive/hot women.

I have been rejected by very average looking men saying that they don’t find me attractive.

One time I went on to a convention, and it was full of young men, no one approached me. I used to work at a really busy place, and in my many years of working no guy approached me. I have been going to a place where a lot of men come for number of years, and no guy has ever come upto me to start a conversation or get my number. When I walk next to my sister or friends, people stare and talk to them instead of me, completely ignoring my existence. I am invisible to men. Despite all this, I can’t accept it. It’s like it too much for my mind to assess and feel, I can’t contemplate how deeply damaging to my identity, that it prefers avoiding the truth.

Venting Tired of it all

It’s getting to the point where I don’t even want to leave my bed anymore. I’m so hideous it makes me physically ill if I catch a glimpse of myself. I’m literally the ugliest woman I have ever seen. I’ve been having a really hard time getting out of bed in the morning and doing my self care before going to work. It feels absolutely pointless to do anything to try and make myself look good and presentable because all it does is depress me and remind me that I will never look as good as the woman in my workplace no matter how hard I try. I just want to hide under the covers and never be seen again. Plus I’ve been in a flare of my chronic conditions and it just makes my self image even worse because not only is my body horrible to look at it’s also falling apart. Ugh, all I want is to feel good in my skin and experience what it is like to be a pretty woman who is loved and desired by the opposite sex.

I barely have any social life and i work all the time

I am not a very extroverted person and I don't have a lot of friends. I do have a couple of people that i text once in a while, or friends/ex-coworkers that i meet once or twice every few months. Most of my friends live in other cities/countries. So usually i did everything alone.

Most of the days i just work and i am wondering if this has got to the point that is not healthy. My job pays okay, but sometimes i need to do ot and i had part-time jobs. I live alone and had no pets. I used to enjoy shopping and going to the theater in the past, but now i gradually lost interest. So basically all i did is work all day, then work some more during nights and weekends. I also don't have a lot of holidays and days off, like I sometimes take a day off once every two or three weeks. And i am getting used to it. But luckly my job is not too difficult. I go to galleries/plays once every few months and i read a little. I stopped dating now because most guys are looking for casual stuff and i never had a boy friend. I am a virgin at 25.

So I think normal people, usually have some friends that they could hang out with, partners or family they live with or pets. Now i basically use work as a form of entertainment or pastime, which is unhealthy. But there is really no way i know how to change that. And when i am outside alone without work, I felt there is a form of emptyness.

I am such a loser and so behind in life...

The way my sister is thriving in her career and on her way to get a postion at a prestigious institution soon, meanwhile I am unemployed and live at home.

I get chastised so much by my mom for my unemployment, she insults me a lot (rightfully so).

When my studying abroad plan was thwarted ever since then my spark was gone. I lost interest in everything.

I wasn't given the opportunity to pursue what I wanted so I am kinda starting over on my own in an unorthodox way. But because of this I am so behind my peers including my sister.

All my peers have either gotten their master's and working on their PhDs or have jobs at reputable institutions.

I am so ashamed that I deactivated my social media account.

Not to mention most of my peers are already married, some even have kids. On the other side, I have never even dated anyone.

I still cope with not having a romantic partner by fantasizing and by having celebrity crushes.

Like it's crazy how I have retracted into this bubble at home and blocked out everything outside.

I am so lonely that I was ordering small makeup items from the little savings I have just to feel some excitement from all the notifications about the order and anticiaption about an upcoming delivery.

Cause otherwise, all my inboxes are empty and I have nothing going on in my life.

I am such a loser. I just want to get away from this place. I wish there was some magic potion that I could take and just disappear into thin air.

30+ ladies 36 and still hopeful/trying - anyone else mid-30s and over still hopeful/trying?

It can be really difficult to maintain hope, but right now I am at least sticking to the arbitrary deadline I made when I was 27/28 and still thought I'd find someone soon - carry on online dating until I'm 40 and then, maybe, give up. I am increasingly thinking 40 might be too early, but I guess it will depend on what online dating looks like then, for me and in general. (To be clear, I don't think anyone over 40 should give up, people's situations are different.)

Tbf at the moment I am more hopeful in general - I don't think I'm any worse or worth less than people who are in relationships or who are conventionally attractive, I think we're all equally valuable. I have friends who love me and who I love even if I don't have many friends, and I am trying to love me too, bc then I know that even if other people let me down, I still have me in my corner.

Holiday seasons really put in perspective how different my life is compared to others

I just saw a post about where to find the best Halloween themed events in my city, and suddenly remembered how I don’t even think about these things because I have no reason to. Sometimes I realize how embarrassing it is that I’m 26 and still mostly do things with my family rather than friends/friend group like everyone my age. I usually don’t think about it but when I see posts of people hanging out with friend groups, going to festivals, clubs and bars, it hits me.

In my late 20s, I have never been to a proper Halloween themed event or party. Technically I went 2 years ago with my “friends” who I often felt uncomfortable around, so it felt more like checking something off the box rather than a fulfilling experience. I’m not friends with that person anymore, which is fine because I’d rather be alone than feel lonely around people I feel uncomfortable around. But thinking about how everyone’s doing all these fall activities, going to Halloween events, just hanging out, planning their costumes…it makes me feel shitty. I’m watching life pass me by while everyone’s making memories. I see TikTok posts about people planning their costumes weeks in advance and feel like I’m looking at a different species. These are normal people, yet I can’t relate to them at all.

Someone asked me what I’m being for Halloween and I felt so awkward, and said something about how I’m not much of a Halloween person. I felt so lame because he could probably guess that I don’t have a social life. What’s sad is that I actually think I’d love the vibe, but I’ve been deprived of these universal things for so long that my mind convinced me that I don’t care about it.

Venting What’s the point really (a long rant)

  1. KV.

I’m at the age where a lot of my friends (well, “friends”, do they even count if you don’t see each other out of work?) are starting get married and have kids.

And I haven’t even gone on a date once the three decades I’ve been alive.

Kids are probably a no for me, but I would’ve liked to at least get married, but how am I going to do that if I get no interest?

No men are interested in me besides creepy old men that go for anyone, and probably only because I’m stuck looking like a teenager despite my age. I don’t attract women at all.

I grow facial hair and a unibrow. I have bad teeth due to too much fluoride as a child and depressive spells causing bad hygiene. Despite trying to put great effort into making my face look acceptable, barring makeup due to sensory issues, I am still ugly.

I also struggle with my mental health, due to intense bullying due to my looks, and having a severely abusive family. I’ve been homeless twice. The world is not kind to weird ugly black girls.

I’m a black woman in an area where that is undesirable (but is it really anywhere unless you’re lightskinned?) and my facial proportions are all wrong. My face is unattractively round. I have a severe RBF, and I am built like an orc.

As a depressed teenager, I thought maybe when I was at the age I am now, I would’ve finally found someone that sees me and understands me. That I would find my person and that all the suffering would be worth it. I lay here at 30, thinking about how stupid I was. But I still persist, because if I don’t they win, but really how much longer am I going to have to be alone?

I’m seriously getting jealous of my friends, random people I encounter at work, and people on the internet for having what I don’t. A happy family that loves them. A partner that loves them. It’s even worse when I see a fellow weird girl in a happy relationship. Then it becomes “What’s wrong with me that makes it so I can’t have that?”

I literally feel nothing but sadness and rage now. I’m happy for these people, but I am sad and angry for myself. I am trying to improve myself more to where I can support myself, be “fully self sufficient” to where I don’t need anyone’s help but, but it just hurts…

Venting Tired of getting stared at because of my hideous below 3/10 face

Everywhere I go, even if its just for a simple walk outside my house, I would catch atleast one person side eyeing me or giving me this disgusted look as if they are offended by my existence. Im 100 percent sure its because of my hideous ogre and it has always been, I don't talk about this with anyone as they would just say its "all inside my head" when I could've sworn its not. Like cant I just not be reminded of my ugliness just for fuckin once, God couldn't even bother giving me a normal looking face. Everytime I catch one person staring at me from now on, I just get irritated or pissed off at this point like cant I just not be reminded of my fuggliness just for fuckin once.

I've tried everything: irl, online, I tried to date incels but even they rejected me, no matter what they say looks is all they care about. Being ugly as a woman dooms you to a life of loneliness and its really hard for me to accept that. Anyone else in a similar situation? I know most here are younger.

Venting I get startled looking at my face when I take selfies :(

My nose is so big! Even after contouring it still looks huge!

I also noticed that my eyes are misaligned! My left eye kinda sits above the right eye and is slightly slanted.

I have hollowness and dark circles under my eyes.

I also noticed that I look cross-eyed when looking upfront at the camera!

It's not that my ID and passport photos turned out bad, I genuinely look like this! 😔

By the time I have enough money to do cosmetic plastic surgeries and get done with recovering from those procedures I will probably be in my 40s!

There goes any romantic prospects...

Life is so unfair... 😔

Does anyone else realize they have a lot of catching up to do?

Improvement/venting post:

I hope that this post doesn't come off as tone deaf. I have good news to share with everyone; I don't get bullied anymore and I'm in therapy. Therapy is genuinely working for me (even though I'm not where I want to be at mentally at this moment, but I'm working on it) and I haven't gotten bullied for almost a year now. However, I realize that I have a lot of catching up to do when it comes to my social skills, confidence, and my lived experiences. I am a 24 year old who feels like a big portion of her teen years were spent getting outcast, harassed, forgotten, and spoken down to. I spent a big portion of my life being treated like I'm less than. Now that I get treated like I'm a human being, I don't even know where to start when it comes to building myself up.

With my self-esteem, I am now mentally in a better place than I was 5 years ago. I don't talk down to myself as much because I feel like there's no need to. Anytime I'm feeling down, I listen to gospel music. It's not as difficult to dress myself up as it used to be. However, I realized that I still struggle with thinking that my looks means everything (if I'm not pretty, then I am worthless) and with feeling ugly (I still get confirmed that I'm unattractive). I feel like I can't relax because I am on high alert (I felt like I could relax around people because they were always treating me badly). I struggle with dressing up because somehow in my mind that means I think I'm too big for my britches or that I think I'm pretty when I'm not. I don't know what type of hairstyle or makeup style fits me or would improve my looks. Nobody else had to feel this way growing up except for me. Everyone was allowed to be themselves and not think about their looks 24/7, meanwhile I was too busy trying to make myself invisible to toxic ass people.

My social skills are terrible too. I still struggle with putting people off and not knowing the reason why. I was just texting somebody for weeks just for them to take longer to text me back and not speak to me in public. At least my professor, who happens to be autistic themselves, understands me and kind of took me under their wing. I don't even know where to start when it comes to dating or sex. I've never had sex before and I honestly never felt sexy. I feel like it's too late because I'm already older and I should know better! However, I don't because my freedom of choice was stripped away from me at a young age just because of my unattractiveness and my autistic traits. Some men (usually older men) want me, the guys my age can't be bothered with me at all. One guy sighed so hard today because he thought that I was trying to hit on him (I wasn't). Plus, rejection hurts me more because I struggle with rumination (even though I'm working on trying to keep myself in a positive mood).

It's like my freedom was stripped away from me at a young age because of things I had no control over. Now, I have to start from scratch and learn things that people learned at 21. It's so unfair to see people come online and deny that unattractive people have their fair share of hardships when my experiences are right here to show otherwise. I sometimes feel more like a child than a woman (I'm not infantilizing myself to look quirky. I'm just trying to explain how I feel as someone who is socially inept). Is anyone else in the same situation and does anybody else feel this way?

Venting Everyone but me is beautiful

I don't think I've ever met a genuinely ugly person in my life. Everyone has SOMETHING about them that's pretty/beautiful. I can't seem to apply this to myself. I'm 21 and look like I have wrinkles, I have acne, my eyes are dark and beady, my hair is always frizzy and just witchy looking, etc etc etc. I can find genuine beauty in everyone else but myself. I'm bisexual and have never been in a true relationship before and have never had anyone EVER show interest in me. When I would ask people out I'd get rejected always. I just don't find myself beautiful at all. Other people are to me though. I crave attention and validation from someone. I just want to feel pretty. I want to feel desirable.
