Welcome to the r/formula1 Daily Discussion thread.
This thread is a hub for general discussion and questions about Formula 1, that don't need threads of their own.
Are you new to Formula 1? This is the place for you. Ever wondered why it's called a lollipop man? Why the cars don't refuel during pitstops? Or when Mika will be back from his sabbatical? Ask any question you might have here, and the community will answer.
Also make sure you check out our guide for new fans, and our FAQ for new fans.
Are you a veteran fan? Longing for the days of lollipop men, refueling during pitstops, and Mika Häkkinen? This is the place to introduce new fans to your passion and knowledge of the sport.
Remember to keep it civil and welcoming! Gatekeeping within the Daily Discussion will subject users to disciplinary action.

Off-Topic [16-18 October] No Formula 1? No problem! Check out the other racing series that hit the track this weekend.
We are slap bang in the middle of two Formula 1 triple headers, so there's definitely no lack of four-wheeled entertainment. If you're still looking for a substitute drug for the upcoming F1-less weekend, I've gathered your main candidates in this list. Check out RaceDay.watch or The Racing Line by u/akrapov for details and even more action.
FIA World Endurance Championship - 6 Hours of Barcelona by Visit Qatar (Round 7/8)
The original WEC calendar shared the same problems with that of Formula 1. The intended season opener in Qatar was first postponed and recently replaced entirely, as was the season finale in Bahrain. The season will now culminate in Monza instead, preceded by this weekend's 6 Hours of Barcelona which will be WEC's first non-testing visit to Catalunya.
Qualifying (LMGT3): Saturday, 09:50 AM UTC | Qualifying (Hypercar): Saturday, 01:40 PM
Race: Sunday, 10:00 AM UTC
How to watch: FIAWEC+ is the series' paid streaming service, international broadcasters are listed here.
GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS - Endurance Cup - Portimão (Round 10/10)
The GTWCE season finale in Portimão will see a rather familiar guest starter taking part. Joining Chris Lulham and Ben Barnicoat behind the wheel of the #3 Mercedes, Max Verstappen will make his series debut. The four-time F1 world champion joins a stacked 61-car grid that will be vying for both victory in the three-hour race and glory in the unsettled title fights.
Qualifying: Friday, 04:55 PM UTC
Race: Saturday, 04:00 PM UTC
How to watch: All sessions will be streamed on the GTWorld YouTube channel.
AUTOBACS SUPER GT - Autopolis GT 3 Hours Race (Round 6/8)
As most racing series, Super GT is also nearing the end of its season. This week's contest in Autopolis was intended as the penultimate race of 2026, however it became round 6 of 8 when the cancelled event in Sepang was instead turned into a second race at the Motegi season finale. Due to this shift, the Autopolis race won't be run with half-ballast but the usual 2 kg per amassed point.
Qualifying: Saturday, 05:30 AM UTC
Race: Sunday, 04:10 AM UTC
How to watch: You can watch live on RACER+ if you're in North America or on J-SPORTS in Japan. SUBARU On-Tube offers a free onboard stream. Highlights and a full replay will be uploaded to the SUPER GT Official Channel on YouTube.
NASCAR Cup Series - Freeway Insurance 500 (Round 33/36)
Last weekend in Charlotte, Chase Briscoe beat his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell by just 0.029 seconds in what was the closest Cup Series finish in over two years. Briscoe's second consecutive victory boosts the Toyota driver into P4 of the standings, 65 points behind leader Kyle Larson. Next stop: Phoenix Raceway with its famous dogleg.
Qualifying: Saturday, 09:40 PM UTC
Race: Sunday, 07:00 PM UTC
How to watch: International broadcasters are listed here. Highlights will be uploaded to the NASCAR YouTube channel.
Kumho FIA TCR World Tour - Chengdu Tianfu International Circuit (Round 6/8)
After four races on European soil, the second half of the TCR World Tour takes place in Eastern Asia. Follwing a triple-header in South Korea, dominated by championship leader Mikel Azcona, the next stop will be in Chengdu, China. The home track of manufacturer Geely - who joined the series ahead of 2026 - hosts a TCR race for the very first time.
Qualifying: Saturday, 01:50 AM UTC | Race 1: Saturday, 07:15 AM UTC
Race 2: Sunday, 01:30 AM UTC | Race 3: Sunday, 06:10 AM UTC
How to watch: All sessions will be streamed on the TCR TV YouTube channel and on DAZN, international broadcasters are listed here.
Le Mans Classic Series by Peter Auto - Imola Classic (Round 6/6)
Fans of historic motorsport will be pleased to hear that the Le Mans Classic Series returns for the final meeting of 2026 in Imola. As usual, a varied range of endurance racing cars from the past decades will be fired up once again in several sessions over the weekend. The event already took place four times in the 2010s before returning from a seven-year hiatus in 2025.
Race day 1: Saturday, 10:40 AM UTC
Race day 2: Sunday, 06:30 AM UTC
How to watch: Both race days will be streamed on the Peter Auto YouTube channel.
MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship - Pirelli Spanish Round (Round 12/12)
2026 definitely wasn't the most exciting season of WorldSBK and felt more like a Ducati one-make cup. All 33 races so far were won by the red Aruba.it Racing machines, 29 of those by new champion Nicolò Bulega. The MotoGP-bound Italian will be trying to extend his new points record at the final round in Jerez.
Superpole: Saturday, 09:15 AM UTC | Race 1: Saturday, 01:30 PM UTC
Superpole race: Sunday, 09:10 AM UTC | Race 2: Sunday, 01:30 PM UTC
How to watch: VideoPass is the series' paid streaming service, international broadcasters are listed here.

Social Media [Ruth Buscombe] This should have been the Last Photo. But it's just another photo. And I'm so grateful. 18 years ago my life changed forever when I was hit by a speeding drunk driver. Which means that today, at 36, my heart has officially been beating for long enough to celebrate with champagne!

Discussion A huge happy birthday to Kimi Raikkonen, aka “The Iceman”, named after his ice-cool attitude both on and off track and Ferrari’s last drivers’ champion
Born on 17 October 1979, Kimi had one of the longest-ever careers in Formula 1 that peaked when he won the 2007 Drivers’ Championship with Ferrari but would become so unhappy with the sport that he changed to rallying in 2010 despite still being in contract with the Italian team. A hard-drinking, party animal, you suspect he would have thrived had he been involved a generation earlier. As he himself said: “If the F1 world could go back 20 years, it would be the same as rallying now.” Despite being relatively new to rallying, he managed impressive results, including a stage win and a tenth-place finish in the championship for two consecutive seasons.
However, his passion for F1 was reignited when he returned to the sport in 2012 with Lotus F1. During his time with Lotus, Raikkonen gave the team their only victories, establishing himself, once again, as one of the most sought-after drivers.
In a remarkable turn of events, Ferrari re-signed him in 2013 on a two-year contract, which was later extended to 2018. His second stint with Ferrari saw a run of consistent performances, with 26 podium finishes, two pole positions, and a memorable win at the 2018 United States Grand Prix—his first win after a 113 Grand Prix gap.
At the time of his retirement in 2021, he was the most experienced driver in F1 history, with 349 Grand Prix starts. However, he lost that distinction to Fernando Alonso the following year

Misc I built a free site to search/ask questions on every F1 stewards' decision since 2019
Hey y'all, every time there's a controversial decision, I see myself and others trying to remember how the stewards handled something similar a few seasons back. I don't have perfect memory, so it's hard to recall something or then have to go and check through the PDF files on FIA website.
So I built https://askthestewards.com. It has every stewards' decision since 2019, broken down by driver, session, rule and penalty. You can browse and filter, or just ask in plain English:
- What penalties did Max Verstappen get in 2024?
- Who overtook under yellow flags in 2025, and what did they get?
- What did the stewards decide at the 2023 Monaco GP?
Every answer lists the actual incidents and links to the original FIA PDF, so you can verify things yourself. The summary is written by an AI model, so it can be wrong sometimes, which is why everything is cited and linked. Deleted lap times are counted separately from real penalties, otherwise track limits would bury everything.
It's free, no login, no ads, and it picks up new documents during race weekends. If an answer is off (or spot on), please hit the 👍/👎 under it and add a quick note about what was wrong. That's the most useful thing for improving it.
Happy to hear what you'd want it to do next too.

Misc Going to Austin next weekend? I made a free COTA guide with an interactive circuit map
Hey everyone,
With the US GP coming up, I put together a guide for anyone heading to COTA, whether it's your first race or your fifth: https://behindthepaddock.com/circuit-guides/austin/
I made an interactive map of the circuit for it. You can switch grandstands, GA areas, parking and the best viewing spots on and off, and tap any area to see where the toilets, water, first aid and food are. It's made to be used on your phone once you're at the track.
What's in the guide
- Where to sit: every grandstand and GA area, with a mini map showing what you'll actually see from it
- Day by day: gate times, every session and support race, plus when to get there each day. For example, the best Turn 1 hill spots go by about 9:30am on Sunday
- Getting there: shuttles, rideshare (it's McAngus lot only), parking prices, and how to beat the traffic on the way out
- Where to stay: the best areas and rough hotel prices for race week
- Food and rules: what you can bring, what gets taken at the gate (spray sunscreen does), and where to refill water for free
- Fan tips: from people who've been, plus stats and a few fun facts about the track
Everything's checked against COTA's official info.
Watching from Europe instead? Quick heads up: the clocks go back on race morning, so the race starts at 8pm UK and 9pm Central Europe.
Been to COTA before? I'd love to hear what you'd add. I'll put the best tips into the guide before the weekend.
