Action/Adventure Y: The Last Man - A Dated Masterpiece

Post image

So been sitting on writing this for weeks since the final issue of the series shattered my established thoughts about the title (in a good way).

First read this after I finished a big chunk of Saga, having fallen in love with Brian K. Vaughan's writing. At the time, I found Y: The Last Man incredibly immature and Hollywoody for my liking. However, I was suggested by many that like the protagonist, the series matures as it goes on and they couldn't be more right and so after concluding it, I can confidently say that this was one of my favourite reads in a long time.

I do have to talk about the final issue a little, all of this is spoiler-free so you can stick around for this bit. The thing about Y: The Last Man is that until the final issue, it's written like a great and fun action thriller which never challenges the reader, all of its storytelling is pretty straightforward and that's not bad at all, I love stories that just want to deliver their message in the most effective way however, what I love more are stories that challenge the reader and leave them with pieces that they have to fit themselves to get the final image of the puzzle. Now, this can often lead to people not liking such sort of storytelling since it can come off as vague or confusing but it's been about a month since I first read the final page of Y: The Last Man and I can tell that this final issue will stick with me for years to come. Absolutely love how the series concludes.

Now, I intentionally called the title "dated" because while I love the series, I do have to point out elements that didn't necessarily work for me.

First is its gender politics, I do think it makes some interesting points but there was so much more to explore there and for me, it didn't use all that potential to the maximum especially with its representation of trans-people. With the last decade putting the boundaries of gender-identity on the forefront of discussion when it comes to individual identity (especially in the west), I was disappointed that this book features trans-people for a punchline. (Shout-out to Dr. McGowan from Immortal Hulk, incredible character)

My second main issue with it, and we are about to get political here because the book includes the topic in a major way, is its handling of the Palestine/Israel conflict. I feel it's dated and centrist and while shortcomings of both sides are displayed, all of it is explored through one side, an antagonistic IDF soldier and for me, using a "bad" Israeli to showcase that all Palestinians aren't bad is a very weird way of communicating that and its lack of Palestinian perspective made me feel icky about how it handled its commentary.

At the end, Y: The Last Man is an incredible title that does suffer from being over 2 decade old but that doesn't mean it's not worthwhile since when it's good, it's GOOD.

Action/Adventure After reading Frank Miller’s memoir, I was inspired to take a crack at “Ronin.” That was . . . um, interesting?

I feel like this used to be highly regarded but has aged poorly. Rather than being considered a masterpiece now, I think it makes more sense to see it as a stepping stone toward Sin City. How do you feel about it?

Action/Adventure The Incal - I was hyped, but..

I think this book has been discussed before - but I still want to add something here. I definitely don't want to bash the book - it definitely has its strong points and merits, especially considering the time it came out in. I'm mostly interested in reading what you got out of it and how your view might have evolved over time.

I am a big fan of Moebius, I really like the whole 70-80's wacky sci-fi culture and the ideas that came about, I was intrigued seeing the "dune that was never made" documentary and so on. I'm also a big fan of filmmakers like Tarkovsky so I don't mind a lacking storyline for a more experience-based viewing or read.

So when I found this book, I was quite excited to read it and get lost in the wacky ideas and world that it creates, and the impact it had on other media.

I finished it yesterday and I am a bit let down. I think it's fairly decent, but I don't think it's great. I think Moebius' art is amazing, the world-building is fantastic and I really like how it dares to explore ideas in different directions - something a lot of contemporary sci-fi seems to be lacking.

I mainly think this is due to Jodo's dialogue and story writing. It's just not really good. It goes in many different directions, throws a lot of ideas at you and frankly, it's just not that deep. If you've seen some of his films you know what he is all about, and for me personally it seems to fall flat quite quickly once you kind of know what that is.

I just read "the final incal" and I actually liked it a bit more - the art style is not as iconic, but the story, whilst being quite similar to that of the Incal, just seemed a bit better. I'm still up to read "after the Incal" and the "before". So that might change my view on the whole. Any more recommendations?

I just started Low today, finished issue 1. And man Ive got two littles of my own now and plots revolving around children in despair are so much harder to read now😭

But I gotta say I enjoyed Black Science and Fear Agent, and so far this is starting out very promising… but damnit they better find them kids! Lol

Anyways, without spoiling how does Low stack up to Remenders other works?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Majority of the book there were no dialogs but some how i still spent so much time on each page.

Something with the arcs/ connectivity of the panels, tells you a very compelling story.

Finished this all in probably 25-30 mins but im sure this is an experience that will stay with me for sometime.

After reading saga and y the last man i'm gonna read everything brian k vaughan made, maybe even the superhero stuff even though super heroes are my least favorite kind of comics. Amazing story that reminds me of one of my favorite movies children of men. I'm so happy i started reading comics finally, right before this one i read preacher for the first time and i have been having such a fun time way more than when i was just watching hollywood movies, comics are where it's at, especially the creator owned stuff

Action/Adventure Graphic Novels that should be TV Shows and/or Movies

What do we think are the best Non-Marvel and DC comics that should be shows and/or movies? With the passing of Sam Keith, was just thinking how cool a Maxx TV show would be like the Liquid TV version.

Action/Adventure Preacher Still Hold Up in 2026?

How about it, does this series still hold up? I remember loving it and I've considered going back through it, but I feel like certain elements have not aged particularly well. I'd like to add it to my collection as well.

How about some other series that you think have only gotten more or less relevant with time?

Action/Adventure BIG-ASS SWORD by Andreas Butzbach

What can I say, sometimes the title tells you exactly what you're gonna get, ahaha. This contains multiple short stories about a robot with a big-ass sword and a talking robot head. Basically feels like reading a sci-fi version of Headlopper. I enjoyed it well enough, the art is amazing, and I'd definitely read more stories set in the same universe. It's less than a hundred page however, but the book itself is pretty high quality. Bought on a whim but definitely enjoyed it.

Action/Adventure The Goddamned by Jason Aaron, R.M. Guerra, & Giulia Brusco

Just finished reading volume 1 of THE GODDAMNED. A long time ago (in early pre-Christian times), Cain is miserable over his own existence. Born into sin and doomed to hardship (especially after murdering your own brother in jealous rage), he’d rather die than move forward.

Well, apparently, being the surviving son of Adam & Eve, that means he can’t die no matter how many times he gets killed.

The world is a vicious wasteland. Nephilim murder, rape, and steal. Women and children are captured and abuse. This is the world before the Great Flood.

This is a brutal, blasphemous story to tell, reimagining the Biblical story contained in Genesis’ first few chapters as Cain fighting his way through this depraved environment. The action scenes are one of the highlights of the book, detailed in all its violent vulgarity. The linework feels reminiscent of Joe Kubert’s art but grittier.

I’m looking forward to checking out the other volume in the series.

For those who read THE GODDAMNED, what did you think?

Action/Adventure The Complete Little Nemo 1905-1927 by Winsor McCay, Taschen

Not sure if this counts as a graphic novel but this book is amazing. These strips are like one surreal fever dream after another and McCay draws it in stunning perfection. If you're a fan of comic art do yourself a favor and track down a copy because I think without McCay, comics wouldn't be what they are today. He influenced so many of the artists that went on to influence even more. This book is a monster too, you can see a normal sized comic on top of it for reference in the last picture.

Action/Adventure I need DWJ to do some superhero mini-series again, damnit !

Post image

Look, I love Daniel Warren Johnson. Murder Falcon and Extremity are probably in my top 10 comics of all time and there's not a single thing that I've read from him that was bad. His Absolute Batman Annual was amazing, his Wonder Woman Dead Earth was also a blast. I'm not really into Transformers, but I did like the first volume of his run. The Moon Is Following Us was good but I think it was his weakest work so far.

That being said, I decided to re-read his Beta Ray Bill mini tonight, because it had been a while since I've read it and man, I want more damnit ! This book is full of incredible art and incredible heart, and it's just a blast to read. DWJ draw some of the finest action sequences in the industry, yet never looses the focus on the characters and their journey. Imagine a Spider-Man or a Superman mini by him (yes I know about that short Supes story he did, it was incredible !).

I know his next project is a scifi creator owned project, but a man can dream !

Am I insane to like these? 🙈

Being a great Moebius fan, I recently got curious about Geoff Darrow's Shaolin Cowboy.

By now I deem that series a a spiritual heritage to Major Grubert and the Garage Hermetique.

At some points I wish I could get the mushrooms Mr Darrow obviously consumend during the creative process.

And these back covers kill me off! (Ok, I am neither Shaolin or Cowboy!) 🤪

Beware, If you enter these, you enter the mind of a madman!

Action/Adventure Yesterday I read Do A Powerbomb and today Beta Ray Bill, two amazing stories with art and writing by Daniel Warren Johnson. And I thought to myself, it would be so amazing if he wrote and drew a long fantasy comic, something like Berserk. I also know he's a fan of the manga.

A stunning book I never realized existed. Bought brand new in the original shrink wrap yesterday, just had to add it to my personal collection! Each chapter starts with a special title page on tracing paper with Braille writing across the bottom. I haven't seen Marvel put this much care into a special edition in a while.

Action/Adventure Books you regret buying?

You ever buy something thinking you’re going to enjoy it and then regret it? Got the Spawn Compendiums when Barnes and Noble had their Image Comics sale.

I’m more than halfway through the 1st compendium and while the art work is amazing, the writing is kind of……. Shit. There are issues I enjoyed reading but, for the most part, I feel like I have to force myself to read it. Does it get any better?

Action/Adventure Are there any graphic novels that aren’t really popular but if it gets a tv show or something else, it will become really big? Either that or books that never became popular even though the story was good.

I know stuff like Carl barks stuff and fables is still going very well. I’m wondering how much old or new stuff isn’t really popular. I know that with graphic novels, there is something that is popular for everyone. There has to be something that will be the next walking dead or the next tmnt.

Action/Adventure Bouncer by Jodorowksy and Boucq

Just finished Bouncer by Jodorowksy and Boucq and this was quite the treat in both art and story! It's a gritty collection of Western stories all focused around the one armed gunslinger and saloon bouncer named Bouncer. It takes place in the lawless and cruel Barro City, a post-American Civil War town in the Wild West.

Bouq's gorgeous art adds so much to the gritty feeling of this story of familial vengeance, the cruelty of the wild west, post-Civil War tensions, greed and even our titular gunslinger's multiple searches for love. There's also some humor added in between the cruelty with no shortage of absurd characters. As a side note it's a very high quality and nice looking hardcover edition.

Since I had an absolute blast with this gritty Western series are there any other comics in the same vein I should check out?
