Wolf Pack DNA, in partnership with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and the San Mateo County Coroner's Office, is seeking the public’s assistance in the case of Pescadero State Beach John Doe: NamUS #UP158357.

SNP testing analysis indicates the man is likely of West Asian descent with ties to the Zoroastrian minority community in Tehran, Iran. He may also have ties to the eastern Mediterranean region.

The charred remains of an adult male, likely between the ages of 30-65, were discovered on Pescadero State Beach in San Mateo County, California on July 24, 2020 after fire fighters extinguished a large bon fire. The man is believed to have built the bonfire himself and engaged in the act of self-immolation.

Items were located nearby include:

Black patterned do-rag/head scarf featuring medium-sized white dots and the letters “GS”
Size 43 black boots
Green duffle bag containing a white metal key attached to a red keychain
Starlight Candles brand small tin candle

Due to the conditions of the remains, no other physical characteristics could be determined.

Circumstances of Discovery

The unidentified woman was discovered by a teenaged boy in a wooded ravine in the northwest corner of Druid Hill Park. The boy had passed the body several times over the course of a few days, but each time he thought it was a pile of old clothes. He checked closer one day and realized it was a body.

An empty container of charcoal-lighter fluid was found near the body. The victim had killed herself by pouring it on her head, letting it cover her clothes, and then igniting the fire. She had first and second degree burns over 80 percent of her body.

The woman had left a suicide note. She likely suffered from depression. She was likely married, influenced by a Christian religion, and may have known how to write short-hand.

She was tentatively identified as Crystal M. Ford through a Prince George Community College card found in a coat about 40 feet from the body. This was never verified.

In June 20, 2020, a decomposed woman’s remains were found in a suitcase in the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Zone of Zhengzhou, Henan, China.

The decedent’s remains were found in a 70x45x25cm black trolley suitcase that was branded as ’Xinrui’. The suitcase was found in the disused lot in the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Zone, near the intersection of Poyang Lake Rd and Lingkong St.

Investigators found that the decedent likely died in March 2020, 3 months before the decedent’s remains were found, when Zhengzhou was under strict lockdown procedures due to COVID-19, a worldwide pandemic.
