Circumstances of Discovery

The unidentified woman was discovered by a teenaged boy in a wooded ravine in the northwest corner of Druid Hill Park. The boy had passed the body several times over the course of a few days, but each time he thought it was a pile of old clothes. He checked closer one day and realized it was a body.

An empty container of charcoal-lighter fluid was found near the body. The victim had killed herself by pouring it on her head, letting it cover her clothes, and then igniting the fire. She had first and second degree burns over 80 percent of her body.

The woman had left a suicide note. She likely suffered from depression. She was likely married, influenced by a Christian religion, and may have known how to write short-hand.

She was tentatively identified as Crystal M. Ford through a Prince George Community College card found in a coat about 40 feet from the body. This was never verified.

On April 2, 1999, a man was witnessed jumping from the St. Petersburg Pier. His body was later found and he had drowned. He had a recognizable face and was thought to have been deceased minutes prior to being found.

I don’t exactly know how the DNA databases work, so I thought I should ask, if a Does DNA is being used for genetic genealogy to find relatives, will another Does DNA be included in that same search if they also have their DNA being used in the same way?

I don’t have any reason to think these cases would be connected, they are years and several states apart, but the question came up for me because they both have Ashkenazi Jewish heritage, could they be relatives?

On March 24, 1997, two people walking their dog discovered human skeletal remains in a wooded area near Fulton Street and Mangoustine Avenue in Sanford, Florida. The location was near what was then known as Central Florida Regional Hospital.

Officers with the Sanford Police Department responded and began an investigation. No identification was found with the remains. The medical examiner determined that the man had sustained sharp-force injuries to his head and that his death was a homicide.

Despite investigative efforts, the man could not be identified, and the case remained unsolved for decades. Details of the case were entered into NamUs as UP16164. In 2023, investigators submitted evidence for STR testing. The resulting profile was entered into the Combined DNA Index System, but no matches were found. Despite their efforts, the man could not be identified.

In 2025, the case received financial assistance through a forensic genetic genealogy grant program. Funding for the advanced DNA testing and forensic genetic genealogy that helped resolve this case was provided through Florida Senate Bill 678, legislation championed by Senator Jennifer Bradley to expand the use of advanced forensic DNA technology in identifying unknown individuals and advancing cold case investigations throughout Florida.

With assistance from the Volusia County Medical Examiner’s Office, investigators submitted bone samples to Othram in The Woodlands, Texas for advanced DNA testing. At Othram, scientists developed a DNA profile from the forensic evidence using Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing®. The resulting profile was provided to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, whose forensic genetic genealogy team conducted a genetic genealogy search.

In July 2026, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement notified Sanford investigators that the search had identified a possible close relative of the unidentified man. Investigators obtained a DNA reference sample from the relative, and a subsequent comparison confirmed the man’s identity as John Richard Moulis.

Moulis was reported missing from the Orlando area on January 21, 1997. He was 37 years old when he disappeared. Originally from Wisconsin, Moulis moved to the Orlando area around 1986 or 1987. He lived at the Ridge Club Apartments and worked in janitorial services at Splendid China in Kissimmee.

After his disappearance, Moulis’ burgundy-and-brown 1986 Dodge Aries station wagon was found abandoned at the Greyhound bus station on North John Young Parkway in Orlando.

The identification was completed shortly before the death of Moulis’ sister, his closest surviving relative. After wondering for nearly three decades what happened to her brother, she learned that he had been identified two days before her death.

The investigation into Moulis’ homicide remains active. Detectives are working to reconstruct his life in Central Florida and identify people who knew him during the mid-1990s.

In June 20, 2020, a decomposed woman’s remains were found in a suitcase in the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Zone of Zhengzhou, Henan, China.

The decedent’s remains were found in a 70x45x25cm black trolley suitcase that was branded as ’Xinrui’. The suitcase was found in the disused lot in the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Zone, near the intersection of Poyang Lake Rd and Lingkong St.

Investigators found that the decedent likely died in March 2020, 3 months before the decedent’s remains were found, when Zhengzhou was under strict lockdown procedures due to COVID-19, a worldwide pandemic.

Tucson Jane Doe (1979)

On November 2, 1979, the body of a teenager or young woman was found murdered alongside a road at an intersection of State Route 83 in Tuscon, Arizona. The decedent died from multiple gunshots to the head and neck before being disposed of at the location where she was found. She had a recognizable face. She was thought to have been deceased hours prior to being found. She also had cuts and bruises on her head and face. Evidence suggests she may have been sexually assaulted, as her underwear was around her ankles and male DNA was recovered at the scene. The male DNA was entered into CODIS, but no match has been identified. Genealogy tests on the male DNA have been authorized.

Investigators initially believed she could have been of Native American and/or Hispanic descent. However, it ie now presumed that she is primarily of Honduran descent, with possible ties to Nicaragua and El Salvador.

Wolf Pack DNA, in partnership with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and the San Mateo County Coroner's Office, is seeking the public’s assistance in the case of Pescadero State Beach John Doe: NamUS #UP158357.

SNP testing analysis indicates the man is likely of West Asian descent with ties to the Zoroastrian minority community in Tehran, Iran. He may also have ties to the eastern Mediterranean region.

The charred remains of an adult male, likely between the ages of 30-65, were discovered on Pescadero State Beach in San Mateo County, California on July 24, 2020 after fire fighters extinguished a large bon fire. The man is believed to have built the bonfire himself and engaged in the act of self-immolation.

Apache Junction John Doe (July 2002)

On July 29, 2002, the decomposed body of a man was found under an overpass on US Route 60 in Apache Junction, Arizona. He was thought to have been deceased days prior to being found. Fingerprint matches have produced the following names: Paul Brannan, Paul Anthony Hinman, Jerry Rye, and Maurice Morton. Investigators are currently investigating these names for a potential match, however no definitive ID has been made thus far. Recent developments suggest that the Hinman identity is likely legitimate, having attended a Phoenix-area high school in the 1970s.

On January 21, 2000, a man was found in the passenger seat of a burning Chrysler Imperial near the intersection of East Broadway Boulevard and North Kolb Road in Tucson, Arizona. Although the cause of death could not be determined, authorities suspected homicide resulting from an intentional arson attack. His NamUs file was removed in October 2026, and the Pima County Medical Examiner later confirmed his identity as Jack Lee Prehoda.

I'm a little surprised a child this young had any matches at all- sadly, many, many infants and babies are just not reported missing (which I think is intentional). This John Doe was found buried in a shallow grave with very little information, but I cross referenced what we did have and this boy came up as a possible match. I see the resemblance in the facial reconstruction but I'm a tad bit face blind, so I'd appreciate other people's input.

Recently, u/Simpsons_fan_54 [asked about a case that had limited info on NamUs](https://www.reddit.com/r/gratefuldoe/s/uTUNCcCgpv) and the story turned out to be far more complicated, so I've decided to do a writeup with the additional information. Someone else did a major update to his Unidentified Wiki page after I added some clarifying details and a couple of sources.

Case

On February 3, 1994, a fiery explosion occurred in a camper-trailer in a remote area near Gypsum Wash and the north shore of Lake Mead in Henderson County, Nevada. The explosion was heard by witnesses further away, and a park services patrol worker discovered the wreckage and the charred remains of a man. An arson-sniffing dog was brought to the scene to see if the fire was fueled by gas, and a large can of gas was discovered in the rubble.

The authorities tentatively identified the remains as belonging to Arthur G. Bennett of Arizona. He was a Marine, and his dentist confirmed the identification from memory, because Bennett's dental file had been lost. His family cremated the remains and held a funeral with military honors at a veterans cemetery in Boulder City, Nevada.

Over three years later, in October 1997, a man who was living in Utah (with his wife and daughters) under the name "Joseph Benson" was arrested for child molestation. But when he was fingerprinted, the results came back as the supposedly deceased Arthur G. Bennett. The authorities in Nevada and the Marines were notified of Bennett's arrest and faked death.

At that point, more details emerged. The Marines had been planning to court-martial Bennett for a child molestation charge in Arizona before his faked death. His mother and two brothers had split the proceeds of Bennett's life insurance policy from the military, knowing that Bennett was alive. His ex-wife applied for dependents' benefits, despite knowing the truth. His relatives, meanwhile, claimed that Bennett had duped them, saying that he needed to fake his death so he could take on a new identity for a secret government mission.

By July 1999, the Marines were preparing to court-martial Bennett for his previous crimes and a new charge of desertion, while Nevada was planning to put Bennett on trial for the murder of the unidentified man in the camper-trailer. However, Bennett hanged himself in his jail cell before the cases could go to trial. In 2001, his ex-wife pleaded guilty to a lesser charge while his mother and brothers were convicted of defrauding the government.

Unfortunately, while the police pursued leads to identify the murdered man, including looking into the possibility that he was the original Joseph Benson and Bennett stole his identity, the authorities were unable to identify this man. One of Bennett's relatives testified that Arthur implied that he knew the victim, but provided no other details.

Hopefully, DNA testing advances enough that he can be identified one day; a man who had been cremated and his cremains scattered in a lake was identified within the past 12 months. I'm also wondering about his estimated height, because I could see someone misreading a 6 as a 5, leading to the height being read as 59 inches instead of 69 inches.
