MOD STUFF Grey's Anatomy Returns October 15th - Rule & Etiquette Refresher

Hello all,

With the premiere happening tomorrow I just wanted to take the time to remind you that the premiere is happening tomorrow :)

Also I wanted to go over a few things that we with common sense know, but just a reminder on rules and customs. If anything is on this list that isn't in the official rules it will be soon.

Please keep any posts about the newest episode in the stickied discussion thread

This is in particular common with low-effort posts. A character will do something out of pocket or unexpected and we'll get 12 posts saying "REALLY?" about one singular action. Let me be clear, we don't expect every post and comment to be high-brow analysis, but give it some effort. If that's all your post is, then it needs to be a comment. We reserve the right to remove these as needed.

If you see a post that has this issue and hasn't been removed, please report it Moderators do not go patrolling the streets of /r/greysanatomy like you may think. If you report it it will alert us and we will look at it asap. Also, we may leave it up if we feel it is appropriate to do so.

Be Nice to each other Not much to say. Pretend they're sitting across the table from you usually solves that problem.

Explicit spoilers in the title

Just a refresher on this. Don't say explicit spoilers in the title. Just had to ban someone for this a moment ago. This applies to ALL spoilers - even something from season 1. We understand that an old spoiler may be old news, but it's really not that hard to figure out how to word something that doesn't say an exact spoiler in the title.

Have fun everyone and enjoy the premiere!

EPISODE DISCUSSION Season 23 Premiere! S23E1: Collide Live Discussion Post Spoiler

Welcome to season 23!!! As always, this discussion post will go live an hour prior to the episode official airtime. All spoilers are allowed for previous seasons, but if you obtained early access to the episode please don’t spoil it early. Please keep all discussion of the premiere to this post until Saturday, then separate posts are free game as long as the titles are nonspoilery.

EDIT: I prepped this post last week, and at that time I found information about a season break from Nov-March in multiples places. More recent articles do not reflect this, so it may not be accurate. I will update as further information is posted. For now we will consider it null and void.

RJ Decker is (bizarrely) doing quite well, so it seems Nick appearances will be limited. No word on how much Meredith we can expect.

Catch back up by checking out the discussion post for S22 finale Like a Bridge Over Troubled Water.

Original airdate: October 15th, 2026

Directed by: Debbie Allen, the wicked Catherine Avery we all love to hate

Episode summary: After a collision at Sea-Tac sends a surge of critically injured patients to Grey Sloan, the unveiling of its controversial new VIP floor is thrown into chaos as doctors race to save lives amid impossible choices.

Song title inspiration: Collide by Howie Day

Episode Trailer on YouTube

Skip ahead to next week’s episode Slippin’ and Slidin’.

Episode summary for next week: As Bailey adjusts to student life, she and Blue respond to a fraternity hazing mishap; Meredith juggles Boston and Seattle as she advocates for a young patient; Amelia and Toni support Jo.

I’ll never understand how anyone found perpetual child, “nice guy” George O’Malley endearing or likable. Ugh.

Why the hell did Meredith name her daughter Ellis and not Lexie 😭

Like genuinely why? Ellis was the worst mother in the whole show, maybe even on the entire planet. Lexie was an amazing person who died in a horribly tragic way. Why the hell would Meredith choose to name her daughter after her controlling bitchy mother and not after her sweet half sister who died so young 😭

They are always cross clamping the aorta

I don’t know what it means to cross clamp the aorta and I wonder if the writers even know. Push one of epi! This guys circling the drain. This isn’t working, im going to have to cross clamp the aorta and crack his chest! Damn it!

I also noticed the way they talk about sex is so unnatural. They often sound like robots trying to imitate humans who have a lot of sex

Anyways, I’m rewatching the show for the zillionth time because I am mentally ill and self loathing

Whhhyyyy do we still we still have to watch Lucas (Niko Terho) do his "smell the fart" acting?

No one is denying that Niko is beefcake, but I feel like that is the only thing he has going for him. How many times did we see him without a shirt in the Season 23 premiere? Niko always makes me think of Joey Tribianni's acting tip: "Take a deep breath and pretend you smelled a fart." I was so bummed to see Niko around for a fourth season. I'm sure there are hundreds of actors who would have loved to have gotten that role and done a better job. I just can't understand how Niko was the top choice. Is the actor a Nepo Baby from somewhere? (Other than being Derek Shepherd's "nephew.") So many good actors have come and gone from this show, but Niko gets to stick around? I wish him well, but can he go "practice acting" somewhere else?

DISCUSSION Characters that get too much hate?

Post image
63 Upvotes

I guess this is more from other characters than from fans (I rarely see her discussed) but I don’t understand the negative comments about Rose. Addison calling her a “doe-eyed little thing” and Mark being really rude to her because she doesn’t sex with Derek soon enough - just felt very unwarranted. It seems like her biggest crimes are preventing Derek from being with Meredith (which….is really on Derek) and being a nurse (a common punching bag for surgeons.)

Any other characters like this?

It’s insane to me how many natural disasters that Meredith has survived

I mean holy shit lol this woman genuinely has nine lives.
1. Survived almost drowning and later flatlining while at the hospital
2. Survived an explosion
3. Survived a mass shooting
4. Survived a plane crash
5. Survived an assault
6. Survived a car crash
7. Survived an emergency c-section and hemorrhage
8. (I don’t know if you could count this) but basically survived emotional abuse, death of her husband, being a single mother and a full time surgeon, a million other things

Like genuinely will Meredith ever die? 😭 she’s going to be like that one old lady patient in the early seasons who refused to die despite flatlining a hundred times over the course of 4 years or something like that to the point where her family was just tired of it and wanted her to die already lol

Alex Freaking Karev :)

This isn’t any spoilers or anything. I just want to say out of any character out of all 23 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy I think Alex Karev has one of the best character developments. I mean out of the whole series. I know Justin Chambers exited years ago and his exit was total bullshit (screw the writers i still cry every time).

Let’s be for real…Alex was a total ass. Sometimes in the later seasons he still could be at certain times, but I mean in the beginning he was actually a full on ass. Now, I love Alex personally and so I can deal with his bs in the earlier seasons, but I mean seriously he did grow a shit ton.

And yes he had setbacks. Mainly involving beating somebody up as his BIG setbacks. But either way from where he started to where he ended there was a big difference in him mouthing someone off versus literally telling Bailey “I messed up. I really screwed up and I’m sorry.” Like this man Grew with a capital G.

I’m still aggressively pissed at the writers for the reason they made him (Alex not Justin) leave and exit the show.

I am currently on S10E13 where he beats up Ross and Mer and Cristina break up the fight and Mer hugs Alex and he’s so frustrated and eventually just falls into Mer’s hug and hugs her back and it just shows how he is such a teddy bear and it makes my heart so full.

Sorry for the long post just I really love Alex and I genuinely do believe he has the best character development (not counting his exit because that is total bullshit and not something Alex would’ve done but something the writers would’ve 100% done). From ass to chief (kinda) he makes my heart smile when his cute Dr.Alex personality comes out with his patients and how gentle he is and how protective he is for those he cares about.

Okay okay I’ll stop rambling, but seriously let me know your thoughts.

You start watching for the medical drama and suddenly you’re emotionally attached to every single character. And just when you think things can’t get worse, somehow they do lol.
Who is your all-time favorite character? Mine is such a hard choice.

SPOILERS The plane crash lawsuit fallout storyline is some of the show's best work

It doesn't seem to be often that Grey's Anatomy writes a storyline across the better part of a season that feels cohesive and consistent. This storyline was intriguing from start to finish, and incredibly rewarding to watch as a viewer.

Starting with the traumatic plane crash and Lexi's death. Then the survivors in the hospital dealing with their physical and psychological injuries. Then Mark dying. Then Arizona losing her leg and her and Callie's marriage beginning to crumble. Then Derek trying to figure out what happened and proposing they sue. Then them suing, and discovering that the hospital was at fault, therefore the gang winning the case and earning $15M each. Then the hospital's insurance company discovering the loophole that there are no more than two attending surgeons allowed on a plane, and denying them coverage. Then the hospital going broke and bringing in Pegasus to do what they thought was helping save the hospital by cutting costs, when what they were really doing was prepping the hospital to sell it for parts. Then the gang deciding they should buy the hospital themselves with the money from their settlement and quitting, therefore forcing Pegasus to leave the deal. Then Pegasus coming back to the deal, and the gang squandering to come up with a way to buy the hospital. Then the gang nearly failing, and Catherine Avery stepping in at the 11th hour to give the hospital the funds it needs. Then the gang officially owning the hospital and naming it Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

I mean, what a fucking story.

Absolutely made Lexi and Mark's deaths worthy of their place in the story. These character deaths are so beautiful because of the season long arc that directly follows it.

DISCUSSION Finding it hard to care about Toni and Amelia

Maybe its because amelia has had a rotating door of love interests over the years and I am tired of investing in her romantic storylines only for it to fizzle out and realistically I know Toni 'Right' is her endgame but man its also her most boring one yet. At least till now.

The actors have chemistry but caterina had great chemistry with almost everyone of her romantic love interests. The actor who played Kai could barely act and yet their pairing had electric chemistry when they gazed at each other. That was the first time I felt Amelia desperately wanted to be with someone.

I also loved her and Owen because they were messy together and her and ryan or her and link. Hell even amelia and james were good to me.

We can't go to this from those kinds of chemistry. On one hand Toni is an absolutely okay endgame but I also wish Amelia got someone she had more of a passion for.

P.S: Just because Amelia says that she is definitively in love with Toni (and whatever other adjectives she used in that latest confession) doesn't mean its true. That's just telling the audience what to think about Amelia's feelings.

Finished watching new episode of Grey's....surprisingly the episode was kinda fun...

• Upvotes

It does have those weird fast pacing story and multiple plot all happening at the same time. But i actually intrigued to see how they play the plot of the VIP wings throughout the entire season after this. And the additional of getting new head of surgery, Simone's pregnancy, and Jo quits... That's actually really want me to know what happen in the next episode

The patient really said “I want Grey or Sloan to operate on me” at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital 💀

I just saw an Instagram reel where Richard was showing a patient the procedure on the first day of some VIP floor at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. The patient apparently said she wanted Grey or Sloan to operate on her because those names are on the hospital, so they asked Meredith to do the surgery.

And I’m sorry, but my first thought was: LADY, THAT’S A MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. 😭

Does she already know Meredith is there? Has she even researched the doctors?

Because even as a non-native English speaker, I know what memorial means. It’s literally in the name of the hospital. 💀

I’m still on S15E10, so I haven’t watched this episode, and I have absolutely no idea what the full context is. Maybe there’s more to the scene, but based on that reel alone, I was just sitting there thinking, “Ma’am, what exactly did you expect?” 😂

DISCUSSION Season 13 Episode 13 - I can't stand how everyone is treating April

To preface - this is my second rewatch of greys but usually I've never watched past season 12 before so this is the first time I've got this far.

The way everyone is treating April in this episode is stressing me out! I know she switched sides but this is a new mother? She's postpartum with a newborn? She can't risk her job when she's got a baby to take care of?
