Gaming I HAAAAAATE characters that just perpetually have snot hanging out of their nose
It gives me such an ick, especially when you see them try to suck it up and then it just drips out again. I'm sure there's non-Nintendo examples of this, but I play a lot of Nintendo games and I'm SO sick of it. It's nasty.

Yoooo, Yo-Kai Watch in the wild? Anyway, some of the others I can think are Snotsolong and Duchoo (Duchoo essentially being a reskin)
16
u/Beneficial_Worry_983 Jun 03 '26
at least with Snotsolong and Duchoo they're supposed to make your nose run or get sick. Draggie's just got it hangin

I don't mind Greninja, at least it's creative and it's not as obvious it's a tongue Unlike something like lickitung

It's a reference to the Einstein picture with his tongue out.
But being a reference doesn't give it an excuse to be butt fucking ugly..

That’s why I avoided other kids as a kid
I called them “sticky kids”
Even as a child I was repulsed by this

I remember one of the older kids at school, a tall snot nosed bully. He was only missing the mouthbreathing to be a complete stereotype.

God, I had a friend in elementary school who was generally a cool kid, but man was he nasty. Wiping snot on his hands and then grabbing cheetos before picking up the controller. Chewing on his damn toenails (like sitting there with his toe in his mouth chewing). Everything in his house was sticky.
But hey, he had a brand new PS2, and trampoline, and a pool. That's enough for kid me to overlook it.

u/TheDudeofDC Jun 03 '26

u/Woomytoons Jun 03 '26
I didn't know she used reddit, hi Sydneyy (love the videos!! keep up the good work even though they are CURSED 💥💥) o(T◇T o)
72
u/fdy_12 Jun 03 '26
Real, like why don't they just blow it out? They don't have a piece of cloth to do so? Then just blow it onto the ground, it's still less nasty than just leaving it there!
58
u/Liquid_Squid1 Jun 03 '26
It's a Japanese / East Asian thing. Blowing your nose is considered rude, like farting. Better to hold it in as long as possible. I guess the runny nose is meant to be like an "ugly cute" (see https://aesthetics.fandom.com/wiki/Busukawaii) character trait.
46
u/fdy_12 Jun 03 '26
That's so stupid, like it's better to hear someone constantly sniff it back in every ten seconds than for them to blow it once every few minutes?
23
u/Liquid_Squid1 Jun 03 '26
The logic seems to be "odours and liquids coming out of the body are gross but stuff entering your body is normal and natural". So better to sniffle it or swallow it than to expel it.
It drives me crazy as well!!
14
u/The_Reset_Button Jun 03 '26
It's also character design shorthand to signify they're childlike, because young kids don't blow their nose by themselves

It's also the only possible way to get slimeballs in peaceful mode, but it's pretty rare for them to actually drop a slimeball when they sneeze
11
u/biggestAmoeba Jun 03 '26
It’s a common feature of children to always be kind of gross/snotty. In Hawaii it’s called hanabata and is so ubiquitous with childhood that you can refer to your childhood as “hanabata days”. I imagine it stems from a similar association with being a little kid. I see it as kind of cute lol but it is a cultural thing in a way.

Pretty sure this is a Japanese trope to indicate the character is very young, like kids who constantly have snot running down their face. I think it’s supposed to be viewed as “cute” though westerners don’t seem to think the same. It’s the same with when they draw a little x to indicate a characters butthole

I want to say that's the point, if I'm remembering correctly. It's something done to symbolize cuteness. Like putting buttholes on animal characters.

u/ayu-ya Jun 03 '26
It brings out bad memories. One time in kindergarten I had a cold, still had to come in, the caretakers announced some game with hiding based on a rhyme or whatever that was. I let them know I'd prefer to be near the bathroom because my nose was horribly snotty, I had no tissues left and survived on the toilet paper. But no, they made me sit under a table and I must've looked just like these characters. Ughhh
5
u/anotherdudette72 Jun 03 '26

Swear I dont get why Asians are obsessed with this as a comedy thing and with animal/ childrens butts.
The amount its used in one piece >_> among the million of annoying things it has. That really annoys me. Even has one character that picks his nose constantly and uses his boogers as bombs 🙄 and another character that constantly has the snot hanging and he also can turn into a pile of snot. Like fn disgusting.

15
u/lajera21 Jun 03 '26
see cubchoo IS adorable EXCEPT for its big ol bubble of snot. NINTENDO DESIGNED IT THAT WAY. Imagine trying to cuddle a cubchoo and how sticky and gross you'd get
6
u/mystireon Jun 03 '26
See my issue (or I guess non-issue) there is that cubchoo is an animal which makes me feel a lot less grossed out about it compared to like a child with personal autonomy who could just blow their nose and maybe take some cold medicine about it.
There's like tiers if "looking like a person" before I get real grossed out by personal filth otherwise it's just kinda like, well it's an animal they get filthy outside, it happens

Real cultural difference here. Japan has always shown love for physical comedy and slapstick. They find humour in enjoying drawing someone or something as repulsive or really weird a lot more than western cultures. Shin-chan is an example of the love for silly slapstick, and BoBoBo was my first introduction to the Japanese notion that weirdness in itself is a form of humour to them.
I personally also find the intentionally gross or grotesque designs very offputting.
11
u/SpookyWeaselBones Jun 03 '26
Of course slapstick would be an unfamiliar concept to Americans who only know the wry witticisms of Tom and Jerry, the Marx Bros, The Three Stooges, Dumb and Dumber, Chris Farley…
3
u/Ziggo001 Jun 03 '26
These are all examples of humour that has largely fallen out of favour nowadays. The reliance on slapstick has diminished, and it's rarely the main focus of comedy anymore. In Japan slapstick is alive and well, and comedy shows can entirely rely on slapstick for their humour.
2
u/gottabequick Jun 03 '26
Just to play contrarian, because I do agree that major platform comedy has shied away from slapstick and gross out humor, but Dropout is one of the most popular comedy platforms today, and it's chock-a-block with slapstick. For examples, try watching Very Important People (e.g., the Tommy Shriggly interview) or various Game Changer episodes.
