Gaming The death of art style in video games
AI has genuinely been the worst thing the gaming industry has even had to deal with.
First, it increased the price of RAM so that nobody can afford it anymore, and now it’s taking away individual art styles. Adding a slop filter on top of someone’s intended art direction.
This technology will either ruin gaming entirely, with developers relying on the tech to do all the visual work for them (this would also make it unfeasible to use AMD or Intel)
or
It dies quickly because genuinely nobody wants it. As consumers switch to indie and 2D titles.
Why has the world become hellbent on destroying art? The world would be nothing without art and artists. Buildings used to be colourful and ornamented, art would be hand-drawn by someone over many hours and life in general had so much more colour.
EDIT: A couple people have called the Cloud picture fake. Here’s your proof it’s not.

Do you honestly think every game is going to use DLSS slop? Plenty of people gaming on AMD cards, which means those gamers won't buy those games.
just becuase AAA shoots itself in the foot every generation doesn't mean gaming is dead. There's plenty of other games that don't rely on the MOST EXTREME GRAFIX that do wonderfully. Lest we forget stuff fucking MINECRAFT is the best selling game of all time.

Ya but the existence of these technologies means there’s less incentive to make a good effort on the actual art.
See how every game performs like shit now because they expect us to use AI frame generation. It’s not worth it to optimize your game when framegen tech exists.
20
u/Express_Excitement40 Aug 29 '26
So you're telling me that if Frame Generation didn't exist, games would suddenly be optimized at launch? NVIDIA didn't even introduce Frame Generation until late 2022, yet we had games like Crysis, The Witcher 3, and Cyberpunk 2077 launching in an unoptimized state long before that. Poor optimization has always been a thing, with or without Frame Generation, especially as people continue demanding more detailed graphics and immersive game design.
7
u/Non-Eutactic_Solid Aug 29 '26 edited Aug 29 '26
And long before that, too. Hell, there was an entire decade at least where PC ports of console games were absolutely abysmal even from just a more basic UI point of view, with some game prompts still using controller buttons, leaving PC players to fumble around the keyboard to try and find which arcane button combo they used when porting the game. That’s to say nothing of their actual performance.
Poor optimization and QA is far, far older than anything Nvidia related.

I'm wondering where all the these "people that demand more detailed graphics" are. Where are they?

That has to do more with the scope of projects and deadlines. Not enough time spent on QA.

u/ILNOVA Aug 30 '26
Ya but the existence of these technologies means there’s less incentive to make a good effort on the actual art.
No? Cause if the base model is bad the AI upscaler will make a even worse result, DLSS won't magically make perfect 3D model.
See how every game performs like shit now
If for now you mean since 15+ years yeah you right.
Like, do people have a Mandela effect or a huge memory loss? There was ALWAYS been unoptimized games for every platform, no matter if they were INDIE, A, AA or AAA games.
You notice it more cause since ~10(if not even less)years ago the amount of games released every year skirocket.

Its not like games are looking worse compared to the past, its the opposite. More details in most of them. You can always try to just see the most negative things, but thats not how reality works.

Shareholders are the death of gaming. CD project red stock dropped when they announced the free remaster for Witcher 3.
65
u/DemolisherBPB Aug 29 '26
Free bad, free not shares money, we need impossible infinite growth or something is a failure, duh /s
92
7
u/Aircon-007 Aug 29 '26
Pretty much this, I won’t blame game companies for wanting to make lots of money but people at the top (specifically shareholders) demand constant growth which is unrealistic, it’s kinda why steam does so well since they are publicly traded.
3
u/RileyNonexistent Aug 31 '26
A free big expansion means that people who don't own the game will buy it, are investors really that stupid?
→ More replies (1)10
u/Karkava Aug 29 '26
It's huge dramatic irony that the people who don't play video games and don't even like them also own them and are obsessed with getting the high score at any cost.
6
u/SunlessSage Aug 29 '26
On a larger scale, CD Project Red Stock has been steadily going up. The dip is quite minor and not necessarily fully related to the free remaster.
That said, I fully agree that shareholders are often problematic. They expect quick consistent growth, while video games take time to release so any growth usually happens in fast short burst.

Nah, most rich people have brains (except nepos), just not in the places they should be. I'd imagine most rich people are probably geniuses in business and finance. Just maybe not in the places needed to know how to handle a game, you know?
5
u/Greasy-Chungus Aug 29 '26
Shareholders? This is Nvidia.
They're currently selling shovels for an AI gold rush, so anything they can do to inflate the value of AI, they're gonna do it.
5
u/bememorablepro Aug 29 '26
Yes, you think they are gamers? Google made a website where a remote server will "generate" you a """game""" with AI that lasts for few minutes, really a real-time slop video with some user input. Many game companies lost stock value.

They are the only ones happy about this... And techbros too. I remember just about EVERY dev whose were used to be """enhanced""" but DLSS5 got sick in the stomach and we're very upset, especially because Management DIDN'T EVEN ASKED THEM. The learned their hames were AI sloppifyed the same time as we did.

u/Alugalug30spell Aug 29 '26
I've been saying for years that more and more realism would just make games look boring, I couldn't have imagined that, perhaps in conjunction with decreasing interest in the liberal arts and humanities, it would also make them look frickin creepy.
19
u/kkaylumm Aug 29 '26
I’ve never been against realistic visuals in games, but dlss 5 has me seeing it for what it is. Pure death of art and individuality.
→ More replies (1)9
u/Karkava Aug 29 '26
I think realism is cool when it's done once in a while, but it loses the magic when it's done all the same.
2
u/trixieyay Aug 30 '26
That is most styles, all lose their magic when overused. A lot of studios and companies are just going to go with what will appeal to people on a mass scale. which does change from time to time, styles move and go as one becomes the dominant one at a time.
Not really a fault of the style, really; it's more just how demand and such work when it comes to anything.
12
14
u/o12341 Aug 29 '26

I hate how we live in time where anything that is made by human hand no matter how shitty is appreciated for that fact alone and that they didn't used AI.
7
u/SpanishAvenger Aug 29 '26
I find it funny how, for over 40 years, realism was sought for in gaming.
People dreamed of a technology capable of achieving this and all artists and developers did their very best attempts to achieve it with the technology available to them at a time.
Now that we finally reach that goal... suddenly people hate it and don't want it, claiming that all previously limited graphics were "intentional artstyles". Similar to how people hate that WoW got graphics updates after 2004 because "only 2004 graphics are the true 'style' of WoW", like the devs didn't have the right to improve the models and textures because "they were ruining the style", instead of acknowledging that the 2004 graphics were simply the best they could achieve back then and they would naturally strive towards improvements whenever technology could allow it.
All, out of fear for change; and, in DLSS 5's case, a deeply irrational hate circlejerk around AI.
→ More replies (2)4
u/Timekilling_Time Aug 29 '26
AI hate is justified when it's justified. It's used not to it's full capacity but out of laziness for the most cases.
Yet, I understand your take as well about progressing and doing graphical updates. Imo, the best case is giving options, not forcing everyone in the same pile. Maybe my PC is weak for new graphics and causing more lag. Maybe old artstyle helped to make things more distinguish and noticeable in the bunch of things.
11
u/Karkava Aug 29 '26
AI is the Donald Trump of innovation. The only ones asking for it are gullible people who fell for the grift.

Gen AI could have also been useful if it was a contained tool that could assist artists with content generation and help them cut down on development time.
But holy shit the launch is just awful. Stealing assets without artists consent, flooding websites with their garbage, burning books after uploading them to the data center, draining water supplies, plugging itself everywhere without figuring out what it can do...
It seems to me that they're rushing this product out the door with the intention of begging for people's attention. Afraid that it wouldn't be appreciated if it slowly worked its way into the background and actually helped people.
They literally said "Fuck you. Praise me for existing." instead of actually interfacing with the world around them.
2
u/IsThisTakenYesNo Aug 29 '26
They sold a concept to investors and now need to force it on consumers to make the investors happy. The only people making any money of it are people who sell the chips.

3
u/Excalitoria Aug 29 '26
If it was just an option to add, like mods, then I wouldn’t care as much (increased RAM obviously still a problem). My main concern is it’ll be baked into the games themselves and change how character designs, art designs are done, or hurt a game’s performance by being baked into it instead of something I can just add if I want to.
3
3
3
u/NaziPunksFkOff Aug 29 '26
Okay so hear me out -
Most games have some deliberate art style that sets them apart in some way, and this AI crap ruins it. Hard agree.
What if some game designer wants their game to lean into this technology. They don't choose any specific art style - they just make something that is meant to look realistic and the AI engine does "ruin" it, it gives the intended look.
I'd be interested in seeing what something specifically designed for this looks like, as opposed seeing it applied to games that never anticipated or intended for its use.

The Cloud one is actually edited, but yeah, I agree overall.
The thing that bugs me the most about DLSS 5 is that it isn't even DLSS. DLSS stands for "Deep Learning Super Sampling," which DLSS 5 is literally not doing. I think they just called it that because people actually like DLSS, and calling it the "Nvidia social-media-filters-in-your-games system," which is what it actually is, would have pissed people off.

DSLL 5 and UE 5 are the most boring trends in gaming. I am obsessed with the style, texture and detail of older games. The crispness of DOOM, the physics of F.E.A.R. and the texture of the silent hill 1. Now it's just "realistic" and "expensive". Like plenty of games were made within ID tech and there was still variety. Such as CoD 4 and Doom 3 similar engines but totally different direction.

with developers relying on the tech to do all the visual work for them
This tecnology exists for PC only. The console and pc versions would be 100% different. Also by not allowing people with amd/intel GPUs to play the game will just sell less.
It dies quickly because genuinely nobody wants it.
Yeah, probably the next generation of DLSS will be different
2
u/spicybeanburger420 Aug 29 '26
I do not want realism in my games. At all. I don’t want carry weight or for NPCs to have full scripts and flawless models with every pore rendered and I don’t think anyone is - but graphics are the only thing you can show an improvement in via a PowerPoint presentation, which is why we’re here now. Good gameplay can’t be presented to someone who doesn’t play games and impress them.
What the DLSS does to cyberpunk though genuinely annoys me - that game looked perfect as it was, it was as realistic as it needed to be for a game where you can hack people into literal hell and double jump, it’s not meant to be 1 to 1 real - but seeing people play an objectively worse version of a great game is just frustrating

Honestly what is the obsession of trying to make everything extremely hyper realistic nowadays I think we’ve already reached the point graphics look great now there trying to add unnecessary things I don’t need to see the skin pores of my characters
2
u/Carrixdo Aug 29 '26
And even then, some of the more popular games are like, roblox, fortnight, Minecraft. Other highly acclaimed games all have very specific and not really too hyper-realistic graphics or art styles. Like some games sure it being hyper realistic adds to the game. But not everything needs to be hyper real.
4
u/xtoc1981 Aug 29 '26
The issue of you ai haters dont know what art style actual is. Do you honestly think that its all about realism? Fuck no. A game is created with a certain art style and being upscalled to remain keeping the same art.
Games ment to be cartoonisch will remain like that. Same about those who aim for realism.
6
u/walpurga Aug 29 '26
There are not two art styles "realism" and "cartooney". There are many art styles, often a mix in between, and it is not just upscaling textures and models. A lot of the games featured lost the charm in their art style.

Ow it reveals actually why you hate ai.
Artists are still required, even with ai. Thats the thing you still dont seem to understand.
Ai can use any art style the existence, so if you really are one, you should know that unique art styles doesnt really exists. Like that mouse pi game, its not a new art style, its based on an existing art style that wasnt included yet in gaming. Yet ai has learned any art style. Its just a matter of using it right
3
u/kkaylumm Aug 29 '26

The people making abuse is not ai's fault. Human slop exists for years or like forever.
The thing is, someone is still needed to create a unique design/concept.
You must see it like this: Games are too expensive to make. To avoid layoffs due bigger risks, it would be better to find a middleground where artist/developers (including me) live in harmony between them and ai

The only actual thing I have to say is it feels like they are trying to make this better than it actually looks. Like they are trying to sell it harder. Some of the pictures I’ve seen from like cyberpunk and stuff doesn’t feel like they’re at its highest graphical setting. I feel like it’s only been resident evil that they had it maxed out on, but every other comparison I see it feels like they put the settings down to medium or low. I could be wrong, or maybe they are presenting it that way because you can flip this on at lower settings I don’t know, but it just feels like they are choosing the ugliest lowest setting face to enhance it.
But also honestly I just feel like I’m having a weird crackpot theory. I could undoubtedly be wrong.

or
It dies quickly because genuinely nobody wants it. As consumers switch to indie and 2D titles.
None of that will happen, at least not because of DLSS 5 AI/NR.
DLSS/FSR while they're awesome they ruined optimization making devs either push visual fidelity higher or get lazy on optimization since DLSS/FSR can compensate, but that was already easy to predict.
Now with this AI aka Neural Rendering stuff I bet it's simply going to be optional feature same as Reflex or Frame Gen for example so nothing is going to be ruined also for NR to look good the base graphics needs to look good too otherwise it's just gonna be unpredictable and shitty looking "filter" so DLSS 5 NR changes nothing, it'll maybe ruin gaming with DLSS 8 or something in future when it gets far more advanced with all kinds of styles to choose from and deeper integration, but not now.

When I watched the GTA VI trailer a probably very unpopular opinion emerged in me. The high contrast looks awesome but at the same time it looks unplayable because I couldn't see shit. Games shouldn't be realistic but fun afterall. Graphics should support gameplay, not distract from it.

This is the first iteration of this technology. It isn't too surprising that it has a lot of flaws. But it has big potential if they can iron out some things.
It is just DLSS. You can turn it off.
Some games might be built around utilizing this technology but I guarantee that most will not. There will always be people who makes things for the love of it and the art of it.

I don't even care about model quality or whatever, just the same realistic shaders make me so mad. Render the light and color in different ways once in a while, y'know? We used to have that in video games. Now it's just Nintendo and indie studios doing that.

Did you even look at the real examples?
They look nothing like this

Stills look better then the actual games, this slop filter does nothing to animation. And the cost of this filter is half the FPS, if developers wanted to add more resolution to facial textures by taking the performance they would.
I'm pleasantly surprised gaming community is against all of this though.
This is the same scheme Nvidia was pulling with ray tracing, they didn't invent the idea of tracing rays. They wanted to use a shitty AI de-noised ray tracing as a way to just tell customers that a game looks better with it, it really doesn't, developers know many other ways of doing reflections without it. But they wanted to make it so you need to buy a new GPU where half of your computational power goes to ray-tracing you didn't know you needed and will not notice is off. This is one of the main reasons many games don't care to support ray-tracing to this day.

Panic over a feature that is going to be optional and only implemented in 3 games a year.
I swear "gamers" hate games more than anyone, literally hundereds of games worth playing every year comes out with unique ideas and styles, yet online you would think every game is slop garbage now.

Unlikely as the "slop filter" needs two 5090s ir i remeber correctly. So i doubt that will be commonplace any time soon. Add the case that it messes with everything (even the few reference images are quite flawed, now imagine how bad it would be on avarage) so it is neither efficient nor good. Then we have the fact that hardware gets more expensive, so no one will really be able to use it

Tbh individual art style was long dead before. Now everyone tries to make "realistic" games. I liked original Harry potter 1, 2, 3 art style where it was colorful and playful

u/Srx10lol Aug 29 '26
Yeah, when modders mod in a developer tool and put it to the strongest unfiltered option possible. The art style of some games will be lost.

there's an add-on to change how strong the filter is for faces while keeping the rest look great

I'm so tired of the AAA photorealism circlejerk. I miss when games were distinct and nice to look at opposed to every game looking the exact same.

It feels really egregious with the FF7 screenshots I've seen. SE's games have a very distinctive art style, and trying to make them "realistic" like this is really painful and hilarious at the same time. Cloud looks like a sunburnt cosplayer who does not want their picture taken.

Unfortunately AI is the perfect compliment to a long held obsession - since at least the PS3 and Xbox 360 era - with games looking gritty and realistic. Even if it gets rid of individuality and homogenizes every style into a generic hyperrealism, it serves the purpose of so-called "progress" in graphics and so it satisfies the average person. I see this all the time with games like Red Dead Redemption 2, where no one talks about the actual gameplay and just raves about how realistic it is. "Dude what if all games looked this realistic?" You combine that mindset with the ability to generate realismslop out of anything and it leads to some terrible things.
It's a bit like how, after 3D blew up with the N64 era and beyond, soon 2D was seen as a relic of the past that only existed because of technical limitations. Obviously not always, since there were great 2D games being released like Castlevania Symphony of the Night, but generally 2D games released in those eras were criticized by gaming news outlets for not being 3D. And nowadays 2D games are nearly the exclusive domain of indies, so now if any big company tries it out you get very dumb discourse about how the games have to be $20. Metroid Dread was the biggest example I saw but I'm sure there's many more.

My issue is that this new upscale can look good, but there’s a good chance it will be a lazy excuse by the devs to put less effort.
RTX can look great when done properly but just slapping RTX support on a game without a second thought is meh, most of the times it actually looks worse and people just turn it off.
DLSS or DLAA (which I prefer) can give you a bit of a performance boost without loosing that much of a detail, but now devs can just say the game runs fine at 1080p 60 fps when it’s actually an “upgraded” 720p 40 fps which may look alright but the input delay is just horrendous.
And now you can get an AI improve the picture so why bother with the better texture quality and whatnot?

i dont think its that bad but the “strength” meter surely should be minimized

Hav you been seeing the actual real screenshots it’s been producing? I don’t think it’s an issue since it really hasn’t produced anything good looking at all a lot of the ai upscale stuff was really muddy or distorted, for now I don’t think art styles going anywhere

Why has the world become hellbent on destroying art?
Profit. As this industry has expanded and AAA companies have made more money, profit has become more of a focus and before you know it, the game company is run by people who have no real interest or background in art and who only entertain it because it keeps the developers working. But as companies struggle to generate year-over-year gains because they're reaching a profit ceiling, they have to tighten the belt and the art aspect is sacrificed.
AI has also made Nvidia one of the most valuable companies in the world, so its only natural they'll try to find as many uses for AI as possible as like many other companies, they prioritise profit over art.

There’s just a few games that would benefit from looking just like real life. GTA VI would, Star Citizen too.

u/ThaumKitten Aug 30 '26
.. I'll ttake the more realistic looking characters over the unrealistic 'auto-pretty' that gets barfed out as 'art style'.

It's not the world that is hellbent on destroying art, it's multibillion companies. Art doesn't bring short term hyper income. Everything should be homogenised and appeal to the lowest common denominator to get as broad audience as possible. There is a reason why conveyor trash like sports games or Call of duty still brings tons of money to their publishers.

u/MotaMasta Aug 30 '26
Do you seriously think people will switch exclusively to indie? I'm sorry, but there are still plenty of good AAA games released in the past few years, and I'm tired of the idea on Reddit that I should ONLY play whatever shitty indie game comes out.
1
u/ThiccAndSauce Aug 30 '26
Nvidia higherups want others to see the world through the vision of theyr slopified brains.

u/NeonArchon Aug 30 '26 edited Aug 30 '26
Just turn it off and/or don't support anyone who uses it.
Also no, this is not the "death of art" in video gam, that's gross over reaction. A lot, and I mean A LOT of devs are also disgusted by DLSS5, and it seems the only one who like it are, who else? Tech bros and the corporate site of gaming, salivating at how many dollars they'll save.
This will mostly affect the "AAA" section of gaming, AA and indies are mostly not affected.
