This only started happening today and I despise it with every atom of hate stored in my body. Can't find a workaround. LET ME USE A REGULAR SMILEY FACE YOU HEATHENS : )

u/The_Silver_Nuke Jun 04 '26
I was just thinking about using an alternate emoticon lol
It might be time to learn how to use Japanese emoticons too (´Д`。

what browser are you using? does it happen when you open the "formatting options" view of the textbox?
1
u/Tinywolf2005_ Apr 28 '26
I'm using Microsoft edge (for organisation purposes), Where do I find formatting options? (is it the "Aa" it seems to just show things for text only)
3
2
u/JonahHillsWetFart Apr 28 '26
yes, the Aa. does it do it when when you’re using that? check your MS Edge options and see if it is automatically rendering the short cuts for emojis. this doesn’t happen on Chrome.
2
1
u/Tinywolf2005_ Apr 28 '26
I checked the settings and there isn't anything relating to shortcuts it still does it when I have formatting options open
2
u/JonahHillsWetFart Apr 28 '26
if you google it, i’m pretty sure this is a microsoft thing. not a reddit thing. it doesn’t seem like they care enough to support a way to disable the automatic conversion.
2
u/Tinywolf2005_ Apr 28 '26
I assume it's a new trashy feature then since It's never happened to me in the past
2
u/justsome1fromearth Apr 28 '26
This is happened to me with Google. Noticed it earlier today when i tried to type <3 but now it seems to not be happening
1
u/NightmareWokeUp May 01 '26
still happens to me on chrome. i cant even prevent it by writing : D and deleting the space 😃
2
u/Eeve2espeon May 07 '26
This is a reddit thing, I checked on other apps and just tried typing ":P" and it never auto filled it to "😛"
but every single time I try to type ":P" it auto corrects to "😛" only ON reddit. This must be some new "feature" they introduced. I can't find any settings for it though
1
1
u/NightmareWokeUp May 01 '26
you mean chromium then i guess? because its happening on all browsers incl macs.
1
u/Business-Put-8692 May 08 '26
I'm pretty sure it's a reddit thing because I'm on zen_browser (which is based on Firefox and not Edge/Chromium) and I have the same issue 😞

u/questionerofblender May 02 '26
Same, it's only happening on Reddit and it's never been a thing before now. Driving me nuts, I use smilies to soften my sentences a lot.
5
u/Bearkat1999 May 02 '26
Just gonna add that it is NOT a browser issue.
I use Opera and it auto opens the emoji panel.
5
u/Eeve2espeon May 07 '26
This is some new stupid feature the reddit developers shadow dropped. I can't find a single option to turn this off. So bandaid solution: use markdown mode, like so :P
3
u/NoTie4119 Apr 28 '26
To anyone claiming this is the OP's browser issue, let me tell you that it's not that. It's only been happening in Reddit and it's only been happening since today. I hope it gets solved soon (Happening to me across all my browsers in both Win and Mac).
2
u/cubist_tubist Apr 29 '26
Definitely a reddit issue, never had this problem before right now, I just want my cute little guys back! (i would put a sad face here if it would let me)
3
u/NortonBurns Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26
This is new since just today/yesterday (depending on where you are in the world)
Only workaround I've found is to use markdown mode :\
There's a drop menu too, if you just hit :

ETA:
Some people might like this feature & aren't here complaining about it.
For the rest of us, a pref switch would be a useful addition.
3
u/glowcubr Apr 29 '26
Yeah, it seems that Reddit just released this today, and that there's no switch to turn it off :/
3
u/Wild-Print1709 May 01 '26
ik, i hate it so badly i want my emoticons back
i swear if they just leave us with it like that id be so mad
1
u/glowcubr May 01 '26
If it keeps up, I'd be tempted to try to write a userscript to fix it XD
2
u/Wild-Print1709 May 01 '26
if it does please do pls pls
1
u/glowcubr May 01 '26
I'll keep it in mind ^_^
Probably partly depends on how hard the script ends up be to write, haha XD
2
u/PebbleTreble May 01 '26
I was trying to write :) and just noticed it today too. I would also like a switch to toggle it off :( At least switching to markdown works...! kind of...
1
u/Beldarak May 14 '26
They don't even need to go that far. Most WYSIWYG let you "cancel" the emoji in some ways, like pressing CTRL+Z or something. I really don't see why they implemented it in this way, it's not a new feature, this has been around for litteraly decades and no other website has this issue.
3
u/neoworldprogrammed May 01 '26
found this post hoping someone had a solution. so frustrating, i don't want to have to space out all my emojis :'). my teardrop is the only one that works anymore!
1
u/Tinywolf2005_ May 01 '26
it sucks I hope this isn't some stupid new feature they think people want
3
u/NightmareWokeUp May 01 '26
its already annoying me in teams and word and so on and out of all the places on the internet, reddit - whos community despices emojis - decided to implement that bs lmao
3
u/Still-Construction65 May 01 '26
i hope they add a toggle in settings, i only ever use emoticons
they're more expressive imo D:

I'm using a Mac with Google, and it's happening to me, too. What's working for me is putting the formatting in Markdown, add an emoticon there, and either post it/switch back to Rich Text.

u/Least_Zone7164 May 13 '26
wait does it work on pc or am i stupid? i dont have it
1
u/Holmat1 May 13 '26
it is on PC, on mobile you gotta add
\` to the start of the message, here's a full guide of reddit text formatting
https://www.reddit.com/r/raerth/comments/cw70q/reddit_comment_formatting/1
2
u/Mean_Comment1713 Apr 29 '26
On PC this is almost never Reddit itself doing it.
Most common causes:
Browser extensions (Grammarly, language tools, “emoji replacers”, text expanders). Try disabling extensions one by one or open Reddit in Incognito mode to test.
Windows emoji shortcut: if you press Win + . (dot), it opens the emoji panel. Some people accidentally trigger it and click emojis without noticing.
Auto-correct / typing tools (Microsoft Editor, Grammarly, etc.) can swap words into emojis.
Quick fix: try another browser with all extensions off. If the issue disappears, you’ve found the culprit.

u/Objective_Animator52 May 06 '26
It's not an extension, this has just started happening to a lot of people including myself. On every browser.
2
u/booksandputers May 06 '26
how tf do you accidentally press two keys that are on opposite sides of the keyboard, and click an emoji in the following menu, without noticing? No, I'm genuinely curious
1
2
u/JJRULEZ159 May 03 '26
can confirm its not a brower or extension issue, if i go over to youtube (or another app, youtube is just the one i have literally on my other monitor) it won't auto translate ":D" to 😃, but on reddit it does, personally just started happening to me today.

u/Beldarak May 14 '26
They're really lame. Feels like the MSN era, those emotes come from the past^^
They're very hard to read (to me they just looks all the same, I don't have a very good sight but I don't have that issue in Discord for exemple), I hope we will be able to disable this like in every. single. app in existence.
2
u/_cetera_ May 15 '26
This just happened to me too on windows firefox. If I wanted to put an emoji Id press win+. Now I gotta figure out how to disable another useless feature again.
2
u/Stevearino42 May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26
Mohawk smiley still works =:)
And I know it's not the same, but ALT + 1 on the numeric keypad gives this guy ☺
2
u/DDGFKilla9743 May 30 '26
:) that's as much as I can do by using the code formatting in the text formatting
2
u/No-Number6027 Jun 02 '26
You have to click the Aa icon in the textbox then switch to markdown in the top right :0 :D :) !
2
u/GreenFBI2EB Jun 07 '26
Dunno If there's any workaround for this, It kinda sucks because I post often in the astronomy sub and due to how designations are, I end up having to type B and sometimes those are in brackets, which autocorrect to sunglasses. It cannot be that hard to add a disable feature, unless I'm blind, but can't find one anywhere.

If you're on a computer hitting command Z fixes it on mine, might work

I had the same issue! Go to your settings and click "Preferences", set "Default to markdown editor" to On, and that fixes the problem :P :)
Then if you need the Rich Text editor for whatever reason, just switch to it after typing your emojis (The next section typed with the Rich Text editor). With Rich Text it'll automatically change the emojis I type from here, but not the ones I've already typed. 😄 😛
And you can switch back to Markdown again using the 3 dot menu in the bottom-left to "show formatting options, then clicking "Switch to Markdown". I'm back in markdown now and can type emoticons freely again :D!

u/Paper_Is_A_Liquid May 01 '26
Gonna tag a few other usernames in these comments (annoying ik but if this solves the problem for people then yknow)

I may be a fool but I legit cannot find “preferences” in my settings. Is it only on the desktop or something?
1
u/Catzee317 May 06 '26
Seems like you can't, but I have a solution (on PC anyway): Add a zero-width character between the characters that cause the auto-emoji. Memorize the alt code. I use the zero-width joiner (Alt+8205 on Windows, Ctrl+Shift+U,200D,Enter/Space on Linux (maybe only Ubuntu idk)).
:D <3
1
u/purplishfluffyclouds May 31 '26
Or, you can just use a space.
Way simpler than trying to remember all those instructions. : )
1
u/PictureSevere3957 Jun 06 '26
For anyone reading this now, you can switch to the markdown editor or copy a zero-width-space from here and put it between the emoticon (so for :) you'd put it at :\) in place of the backslash)
2
u/dotzerodot Jun 21 '26
worst thing is they messed it up, : ) converts to 😄 and : D converts to 😃
should be the other way around...

This isn't a reddit issue, it might be an issue with your web browser.
4
u/NecessaryCelery6288 Apr 28 '26
It actually is a Reddit issue. Browsers are Programmed with Unicode not BBCode,
1
u/Tinywolf2005_ Apr 28 '26
I tried googling it but for me it just said things about microsoft apps and not the browser
2
u/rainydaysforpeterpan May 08 '26
Which is wrong. Do not listen to Google AI Overview slop.

Suuper f*cking annoying, like there's not enough emojis in the wild (thanks AI).
